Shimmer was the record that put Stefan Goldmann on the map of techno. The dark and throbbing tracks, reduced to the essentials, were love at first sight for many of the DJs who ruled the scene back in 2004. Josh Wink threw in one of his most focused remixes for Stefan Goldmann's debut on Ovum - which was also the first one by a German artist on the label. As so often in dance music, things have come full circle. About time to give a mint copy of "Shimmer" to the DJs who play this prototypic sound today. Remastered meticulously by Rashad Becker at D&M, with the title track cut to a full 12" side, it never sounded better.

Sei A is an artist who has astutely diversified his sound with each and every piece of output and whilst his catalogue has strayed left of centre it's consistently remained punctuated with the sort of muscular club material that's given him a steady home at AUS. His latest offering is one that fans of 'Make It Work' and 'Wants' will relish as it melds moody, syncopated grooves with nifty vocal snips and capacious breakdowns.
The title track unfolds behind an arresting loop that - propelled by a dense thud, gathers percussive whacks and a prowling bass pattern. Vocal clips fall in and out before a truncated breakdown snaps back in and catches the listener off guard. 'Never Wander' then builds behind sizzling hi hats and a tape-driven kick. Mournful chord shifts are spread overhead before a sharp electric bass pattern is driven in from underneath.
Suffused with tape-driven texture '4ME2' then unfolds behind a tumbling sequence that's gently bent out of shape. A thick wall of sound then snowballs bringing with it a rasping bass tones and vast, heart-rending chord shifts that seal off yet another addition to a long list of triumphs on AUS.

“Zero Set” represented a milestone in latter-day Krautrock, created in 1983 by a hugely authoritative triumvirate of the German avant-garde: Dieter Moebius, Conny Plank und Mani Neumeier. The musician, producer, remixer and self-confessed Krautrock fanRichard Fearless has dismantled the outstanding track “Speed Display” and bequeathed two new versions to Bureau B.The original musicians:Dieter Moebius was a member of seminal bands like Cluster and Harmonia. He was, indeed still is, active as a solo artist and in various collaborations (with Conny Plank, amongst others). Conny Plank is seen as the definitive Krautrock producer, having worked with Kraftwerk, NEU!, Cluster and Ash Ra Tempel. Last but not least, Mani Neumeier, Guru Guru founder, figurehead and drummer.How the remixes came about:Delving into Conny Plank’s tape archives, we came across the original “Zero Set” multitracks. What a find! We asked ourselves: what would happen if these tapes fell into the right hands? Hands which know their way around a studio, understand how remixes work –whilst according the materials in question the respect they deserve. The first name that sprung to mind was Richard Fearless. Not so long ago, he had meticulously curated a 2CD/3LP compilation of Bureau B tracks (Kollektion 4), hence recommending himself as just the man for the job.Richard Fearless:Best known as founder and frontman of the British bandDeath In Vegas,Fearless has clearly been inspired by Germn electronic music, as many of his albums reveal. A sought-after producer and remixer, he has worked withIggy Pop, Bobby Gillespie, Paul Weller, Liam Gallagher and Hope Sandoval.He once described his love of Krautrock andrelated movements as follows: “I always listen out for music with a sense of space; where compositions are stripped down to the barest components while retaining the power to conjure emotion. If you can trigger emotion with the most minimal amount of sound, that’s job done as far as I’m concerned.”The remixes:The original was powerful enough, driven forwards by Mani Neumeier’s machine-like drums and incessant bass synths, yetFearless has managed to crack up the energy levels even further. On the A-side he has grafted rhythmic patterns onto a four-to-the-floor beat and compelling bass signature. Feedback, echoing voices, a sprinkling of synth–only the most essential elements, nothing which risks overloading the mix. Meanwhile on the B-side, the original track is barely recognizable.Fearless has plucked just a few notes from the bassline and crafted a fine slice of hypnotic electro-dub with minor chord echoes.

Today RATATAT, the duo of Evan Mast and Mike Stroud, have revealed they'll release their fifth studio album Magnifique on July 17 via Because. The 14-track album includes the recently released single "Cream On Chrome," which the duo debuted during their closing, headline set at this year's Coachella. In support of Magnifique, RATATAT have already hit the road running with sold-out underplay shows in April and confirmed festival appearances at Primavera Sound, Governor's Ball, Capital Hill Block Party and HARD Summer.
Following up on the experimental sounds of LP3 and LP4, RATATAT return to their core guitar-driven sound on Magnifique which was recorded over the course of four years in various studios in different locations including Jamaica (the country), upstate New York, Long Island, NY and their home studio in Brooklyn. The art for Magnifique includes a series of sketches drawn by Mast and Stroud during the recording sessions. What else can you expect on Magnifique: pedal steel guitar, the sound of a tiny 1940's guitar amp found in a thrift store in Guadalajara used on "Intro," a song named upon the discovery that the guys both had posters of a " Countach" on their walls in junior high (the duo met in college), and a cover, their first ever, called "I Will Return" by Springwater (aka Phil Cordell).
Lustrous and unclassifiable, RATATAT also worked on Kid Kudi's first album, remixed Björk, Kanye West and even Notorious Big. Their tracks are often used in sync for brands like Jaguar & Apple or for Tv and Radio shows soundtracks (France 5, France Inter…)

Consequence of Sound reviewed the band's recent headline show in Pomona noting "fans' rabid reaction thought this performance spoke volumes about the outfit's perhaps underrated impact and popularity… Their 75-minute set was nothing less than explosive from beginning to end."

Tim Green turned to one of our main players here at Cocoon Recordings as he is looking at his fifth release with this one already. Well done chap! This means that Green is one of the few artists that reflects the sound of the label like only a few out others there: Minimal Techno with the right amount of energy but not too cold and spiced up with fat basslines and manic synths to burn down every floor, that is Mr. Green in full effect! London based Green seems to be the master of that typical sound we are focusing at. His top notch musical output is full of energy and features colourful melodies and sounds. He composes like a painter paints, layer by layer and all on a solid and perfect base. Green creates his tunes with a big musical potential but manages it to keep the balance right without being too melodic or even over intelectual. His acoustic paintings are fat and they appear heavy and perfectly designed. They communicate straight and clear. Green is the fighter against simple and boring loop arrangements with dodgy one note basslines. His music is food for dancers and listeners at the same time - and both in perfection. Greens new release for Cocoon is no exception to this and follows that formular: "Eclipse" and "Thieves" are big productions with massive melody parts packed in a minimal cover. His beats and bass-programing are on spot and make his composition complete. This ep appears super heavy and colourful and just perfect. This is the right sound for all those upcoming open air festivals, hedonistic music in a sentimental mood that just makes us wanna dance - bring it on Mr. Green!

He composes like a painter paints, layer by layer and all on a solid and perfect base. Green creates his tunes with a big musical potential but manages it to keep the balance right without being too melodic or even over intelectual. His acoustic paintings are fat and they appear heavy and perfectly designed. They communicate straight and clear. Green is the fighter against simple and boring loop arrangements with dodgy one note basslines. His music is food for dancers and listeners at the same time - and both in perfection. Greens new release for Cocoon is no exception to this and follows that formular: "Eclipse" and "Thieves" are big productions with massive melody parts packed in a minimal cover. His beats and bass-programing are on spot and make his composition complete. This ep appears super heavy and colourful and just perfect. Library music composers and session performers had no constraint at all. They typically work anonymously, have rarely become known outside their professional circle and they have produced what probably is the most creative music catalogue ever. The Mondo productions started with four releases to describe locations: dedicated to seascapes; scenarios range from sea fauna to poaching, from natural parks to sea dunes. Landscapes surrounded by plains, mountains, lakes, forests,beaches and marches. A land that still recalls a legends, fantastic tales that tell the story,the events ,the origin of a real place,when past and present coexist in a perfect harmony. Four records to describe the seasons. A journey through the rise and fall of the sun,the bright light of a spring day, the warm wind that dissolves the sand on it's way to the rainy season.

Having previously used their dnuoS ytiviL offshoot to release material from their nearest and dearest (think Batu, Bruce, Hodge and Alex Coulton), Bristol's Livity Sound crew turns to unknown French producer Simo Cell. The two tracks showcased here are a rather fine introduction to this newcomer, with opener "Piste Jaune" offering a clandestine blend of stuttering electro bass, discordant analogue percussion hits and spooky electronics. The mystery man goes for the jugular on "Cellar Door", with pitched-down, bleep style melodies and liquid electronics riding an off-kilter, broken techno groove. Another fine Livity release.

pauline oliveros and ione - water above sky below
Morphine presents Water Above Sky Below Now from pioneering American composer Pauline Oliveros and Ione. An experimental musician and educator, Oliveros is the creator of the deep listening practice _highly attentive full body audition. She is joined on the album by author, improviser of spoken word and sonic vocals Ione, artistic director of the former Deep Listening Institute founded by Oliveros. The three-part improvisation was produced using Oliveros' Expanded Instrument System (EIS), an electronic sound-processing environment that allows improvising musicians to transform their own acoustic input in real time. Here, her specially tuned digital accordion—accompanied by Ione’s vocals and spoken word— is converted via EIS , manipulated, and diffused through multiple channels. "The EIS imperative (and improvisation imperative)," Oliveros writes, "is to listen and respond: spatial relationships and progressions are as important as the traditional parameters of music."The release of Water Above… is the latest movement in Oliveros' six-decade-long career, which began at the San Francisco Tape Music Center in the '60s and was distinguished with the William Schuman Award for lifetime achievement in 2009. It is Morphine's third full release of the year, following from Charles Cohen's Brother I Prove You Wrong. "Go Deep and Listen," from that LP, is a silent dedication to Oliveros from Cohen, who participated in her workshops in Philadelphia. The album was produced by Rabih Beaini and designed by Tankboys, with original cover art by Nathalie du Pasquier.

French composer and multi-instrumentalist Pierre Bastien delivers the latest entry into Morphine's increasingly diverse catalog.
Active for over four decades, Bastien is best known for building automated orchestras, and his most recent LP, Machinations, was released on Aphex Twin's Rephlex label in 2012. For this latest work, Bastien recycled components of his Silent Motors live set and assembled new mechanical organisms—using amplified Meccano parts, motors, fans, rattles, paper, and nails—to generate rhythmic scaffolding. Live instrumentals, from prepared trumpets to the African Kundi harp, Javanese rabab, sanza, electric harpsichord, bass, drums, and gongs, were then superimposed on top. But for all their haptic mechanics, the assembled works on Blue As An Orange—spanning jungled ambience to yellow jazz grooves—are surprisingly delicate and nuanced, and generously lanced with human warmth. As an installation artist, Bastien also captures shifting patterns of light and spatial texture in sound. The LP takes its name from Paul Eluard's poem, "La terre est bleue," and offers a fresh symbiosis of speculative anthropology and old-world jazz. Future Times is back in the mix, expanding the sound and vision of the label with the latest in their compilation series, Vibe 3!!! The compilation opens with the dynamic killer "Junk Funk" by DC newcomer OV, a pure cut that rotates between percussive slice and complete ambient stasis. Juju & Jordash come thru next with "Soggy Bottom" and get their hypnotic piano throb on, and Max D's "Octopus" follows with an improvised, kinetic bang. Grapes & Isle O' Man ft. The Wino Boys (an alias for MB and OD, who've put in work on RH's No Label) knock it out with a beautiful slab of whacked reggae in "Up The Dubs (It Can't Rain Forever)", and Further Records' Raica fades it out majestic with "Makmba." Disc 2 starts with a new track from Beautiful Swimmers, "Primo", a thick chunk of Industrial Pop, like some fractured version of "Was Dog A Doughnut" for the freaks. Jeremy Hyman, most recently heard from in collaboration with FT's Max D for the Lifted LP on PAN earlier this year, rides a luscious animated opening into a great slice of plastic techno with "Machine Stops". The B Side starts with Protect-U's insane "Krums", a whirlwind of liquid metal and cranked snares, and rides out with "First Sign Of Artifice," the first, amazing burst from newcomer Edy Alta. Disc 3 starts with Shanti Celeste and her monster cut "Strung Up", a savage tune for the deejays that mixes a bit of her native Bristol with classic electro. After that Dawit & Dolo (aka Dawit Eklund of the 1432 R crew and Dolo Percussion) collab on the massive, always-rising "Knowledge Body," turning a hurricane of snares into a moody, slow-build tower. Steve Summers lets us breathe for a moment on the last side of the comp with "Shimmer," a sick vignette and DJ tool. DSR.MR (a collaboration between Mood Hut's Cloudface and Max Ravitz aka M Rav/Patricia) shuffle into infinity after that with the blessed Rhodes techno shifter "Crystal Jungle," and C'est Life (aka Jack J) ends the compilation on a perfect note with the timeless "New Years Eve 2013."

KAT deliver release number 7 on the KAT45 offshoot but this time in the form of a delightful 10" vinyl with 4 ace tracks from super ace French producer Florent F. First off we have the summer drenched 'Anata Dake No Mono' which was originally released by popular Japanese artist Yumi Arai and starts with that uber dope break (as a favourite of Dj Muro). The edit removes the vocal which totally transforms the track into a blissed out Jazz Funk instrumental groover. Next up we have 'Sunday Morning'. Again summer vibes are the order of the day with an amazing down-tempo string led, deep soul stormer of a track. Akira Inaba did the original with again the vocals being stripped out for good measure. On the flip we have the super quirky 'At The Zoo' which doesn't really fall into any genre other than 'good music'. Taken from the Shogun Funk bands 4th album, 'At The Zoo' is a fun track that straddles both Disco and Funk but also touches on the Balearic, its had the choruses removed to ensure the groove keeps on a going! Finishing things off we have Jazz Orchestra, a rather splendid instrumental Jazz-Funker and taken from the Jazz Orchestra 75 LP which was originally released on the prolific Japanese Jazz label, Three Blind Mice. The central break has been removed to transform the track into a crescendo ambiance builder. Highly recommended to played on a large soundsystem!!!

Two steaming Afro Funk rollers from Togo .. TIP! Hailing from the capital city, the Togo All Stars display a vigorous rhythm section and three sturdy voices deeply rooted within the afropop traditions stemming from the independence era, be it high-life, afrobeat, funk, reggae or even gospel music. A passionate man with a cause, Serge Amiano has been living in Lomé for a few years now. Thanks to his musical vision, he’s the mastermind behind Togo All Stars’ meeting of two generations. He confronts younger musicians playing in the shadows with older voices long thought to be tarnished under elusive limelight. Tireless talent scout and energy catalyst, Amiano paved the way for the Togo All Stars to happen; in the same manner he did it for Fanga, a celebrated French afrobeat collective in the last decade. Korbo, Fanga’s singer is featured on the Togo All Stars’ first album to be released this spring, under Kindred spirits record label. Nested behind its sea front lined with tentative palm trees, Lomé is an unsung Atlantic Africa city. The city mixes the energy of a restless youth with displays of genuine emotions that were once the soundtrack of the country’s independence, from April 27th 1960 to this day. Set in a country where cultural preservation is almost pointless, Serge Amiano had the idea to bring together rough voices from the past with the supreme rhythms of young lions dedicated to any kind of repertoire they lay their hands on. A true electric shock between generations, the Togo All Stars combine dignified and vintage singers with youthful musicians, exuberant rhythm section, liquid guitars and devastating horns. Genuine Togolese afro funk pioneer, charming Napo de mi Amor brings his solid vocal experience to the front of the orchestra. Aguey Cudjoe is Amiano’s true discovery. He stumbled upon this veteran singer doing high-life numbers in one of Lomé’s rare clubs. He became effortlessly one of the All Stars main voices, also adding sweet percussive touches in the distance. Experienced and mature, Dama Damawuzan learnt his trade within As du Bénin, the great and main Togolese orchestra from the 1970’s. He confronts his vocal prowesses to his own percussions but also to young drummer Gbetoglo Efoevi’s fierce groove. On this album, each of the All Stars’ eight musicians joins in for vocal harmonies. Legendary Otodi Studio was reopened for the sole recording of this first Togo All Stars album, giving exquisite analog warmth to the songs. Unappreciated for the time being, these gathered stars from Togo set bridges between the past, the present and the future of an always moving afro music. Fresh and raw energy combined with vintage singers, the Togo All Stars’s music embodies a true international musical elegance, looming large over the Atlantic and giving Togo its first big band since the 1970’s.

Herron's first solo release, after the success of two VA’s, a 40 min tape on his own meandyou. label and more recently a VA with Workshop, Herron now produces a five track ep which shifts between his lo-fi alternative take on the multiple genres of modern club music. The A side begins with a trippier disco-edit style jam dismantling the house to a soft and delicate sunrise dance. The B side takes things to a more cramped place, pushing its way through a dark dubby techno interlude with Minor Hazard followed by Force of Habit which feels a little more chaotic until finally Venture lays the ep to rest in the night garden.

An obscure tape release discovery by Red Light Radio founder and close friend of the label, Orpheu de Jong, led to Music From Memory’s latest release.
This two track 12” highlights the work of electronic music pioneer Joel Graham, a San Francisco based artist who self released two cassettes in 1984/85.
Originally recorded and performed live on pre-MIDI analogue equipment in 1982 as an outline for a live performance, these visionary tracks provoke much of the same sensibilities found in both contemporary dance music as well as in works of more established vanguard artists of the time. Slowly unravelling and deeply hypnotic, Joel Graham’s music seems to manifest a doorway to a profound new world and can be seen as a forerunner of what was to come in electronic music.

As earlier compilations of 'Danza Meccanica' have taught us, Italy gave birth to a disproportionate number of synth-pop, new wave and electronic acts in the 80s. Mannequin goes deeper into the Italian new wave archelogical research with a killer 10 tracks selection of Carmody. Picking their name from a science fiction novel titled "Dimension of Miracles" by Robert Sheckley, Carmody were coming from Torino, as their pairs Monuments and Chromagain. Started as a duo (Alberto Ramella and Andrea Lesmo) and later a trio with Max Casacci joining in as a guitar player, Carmody recorded from 1981 to 1985 and issued three incredibly rare demo tapes. "Sleep On Mirrors" compiles the best tracks from those tapes, bringing you one of the most peculiar 80's minimal synth music coming out of Italy.

Archie Pelago is a trio from Brooklyn. Greg plays cello; Zack plays saxophone; and Dan plays trumpet and works the knobs. The Archie guys did one of the very first releases on Mister Saturday Night Records; and we're very happy to have them back – especially with such brilliant tunes. The A Side, Clammy Customer, takes dozens of twists and turns, weaving in vocals by the always excellent Gabriel Garzon-Montano; and the B Side, Madame Suede Nightshade, was apparently made with us in mind (check the initials). Both sides are tried and tested on our dancefloor and cut at 45rpm for maximum oomph.

General Ludd is Rich McMaster from New Jersey and Tom Marshallsay from Canterbury. The guys met at the Glasgow Art School, where Rich studied environmental art and Tom studied fine art. Their first collaborations were interactive sound installations, but that quickly gave way to all night music making sessions. This is their second EP for us – a more left field turn than their first, but, we can assure you, both tracks will break discerning dancefloors wide open.

Alongside fellow members of Berlin's Janus collective, recently behind nights at Berghain and Corsica Studios, M.E.S.H. is known for his futurist approach to club dynamics and production. On Piteous Gate, tightly gridded and sculpted sound juts up against loose-wristed improvisation, automated processes, and collage. Standard club syncopation is twisted by sliding tempos, cut and paste time signatures, and indeterminate pacing. Its sound design and compositions are ornate, even courtly, with neo- feudal moods offset by the recurrence of hydraulic hiss and flanger. A synthetic fuel injector revs opener 'Piteous Gate' to life. Drawing from action- scifi film trailers and the sound design of festival trance, its hardcore synthlines shatter into 'Optimate'-stately, spatial, and whiplash-luxurious, with meandering cybernetic drumming. 'Thorium' sends a slow-motion camera through a melting test reactor: all burnt VSTs and synthetic theorbo and loose drums. 'The Black Pill' smears high-end renaissance sample libraries through arcs of static. In 'Epithet,' temple sewer atmospheres are ruptured by 'Scythians'-style cut-up drums. 'Jester's Visage' indulges a minute-long baroque guitar improv, and territorial youths air their beef in 'Kritikal & X.' Closing out the album, 'Methy Imbiß' is a machinic rhythm track, and 'Azov Seepage' mingles birdlike granular noises with rusted steel clanging. The LP was recorded in Berlin in winter 2015, mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M, and pressed on 140g LP and CD.

After his standout debut EP on the label in 2012, Nick Sinna is now back on TrusMe's Prime Numbers label with three more searing Techno tracks that come complete with a remix from VRIL. Sinna is a Manchester native with the city's rich musical heritage running through his veins. From D&B to Hip Hop and on to House and Techno, he has a diverse array of influences but distills them all into his own rugged sound, often made using some authentic bits of hardware. The excellent title track here is 'Black Rose'. With an electro tinged bassline, tough synth riffs and darkened vocals repeating the title's refrain it is a powerful, forceful track with a shadowy sense of mood. As such it's exactly the sort of thing that will lock down dance floors for days. Remixing this one is Delsin and Giegling artist VRIL, who flips it into a lo-fi, grainy and seriously dubbed out techno roller. The brilliant 'What List?' has a more lumpy groove at its heart as well as some clipped ghetto vocal stabs and big rubbery bass stomps. It's a raw and arresting track with classic cow bells, groaning machine noises and funked up percussive patterns. The final original is the slower, more purposeful but seriously heavyweight 'No Rules', with its blown out bass sounds, clattering drum hits and rattling synth lines. There's a subtle sense of soul emanating from its core in the form of some lush pads, yet still it retains a real sense of physicality.

Roland Clark has without any doubt written house music history. Under names like South Street Player, Dark Clark and of course Urban Soul he has influenced the evolution of house music like only a few others. His different vocals on Fatboy Slim´s records are timeless, such as "What the f*ck" and "Song for shelter". Gourmets of old school house music become excited when they listen to Roland´s "Alright". The song, released in 1991, became a milestone in terms of soulful house, in the same way like Adeva´s "Respect" and Terrence Parker´s "Love´s got me high". Marc Romboy has re-explored this pearl for his series "Lost Treasures" and was able to convince Roland to release it again, fort he nyoung generation and fort he old school lovers. The package comes along with a respectful interpretation of no one else than Gerd (Clone, 4 Lux) and the fine remaster of the original club mix from more than 20 years ago.

Niko expresses true Detroit deepness while allowing room for a sultry female vocal to carry a bit of melody throughout each mix. A1 starts off low tempo and very dance friendly while B1 delivers a very funky baseline and leans to a more aggressive beat. B2 gets really deep and plays down to a minimal pulse. Thankfully, Richard D. James has decided to finally release at least some of the output that he's been banging on about since mid-2000s. In a number of interviews, the might Aphex Twin hinted that he has vast artilleries of tracks stacked up and unreleased, probably more on purpose than out of laziness...or maybe not. What we do know is that AFX is reborn after the string of acid 12"s released about 10 years ago on Rephlex, that saw the alias become one of the most popular of James' alter egos. Orphaned Deejay Selek is a collection of tunes that contain all of the Twin's magic and unpredictably, but that also cut straight to the point and head to the middle of the dance floor. We here at WPH are not ones to celebrate each and every significant number in our history. We do not even consider numbers to be that significant. But what we do believe is that every story has its ending and that every ending should come with a bang. And so we have decided that the regular WPH series and the coloured vinyl-only series will come to an end together with one last release. At a time when simply repacking and reselling classic releases has become more important than bringing new stuff we decided to join the reissue craze in our own special way.
