Archie Pelago is a production and live performance trio based in Brooklyn, NY. Following four releases in the Bangers and Ash 12" series, Styles Upon Styles inaugurates the label proper with an EP from our friends and community cohorts, Archie Pelago. From their earliest digital releases on End Fence and Tectonic, through substantial 12"s via Mister Saturday Night, Well Rounded, and their recent self-released transmissions (Sly Gazabo EP and Breezy Whey), each body of work from the trio of Hirshi, Kroba and Cosmo D contributes to a growing narrative in their catalogue of improvised, acoustic-electronic dance music. The music of Archie Pelago (the trio of Hirshi, Kroba and Cosmo D) suggests many reference points that are beyond the usual boyed-up remit, straying into musical territory inhabited by seriously gifted live instrumentalists. This, however, would be of no particular note to us if it wasn't channeled through a love for a contemporary bass-driven electronic music. The trio hail from Brooklyn, NYC and bring a strong heritage of their hometown to their music, referencing the deep jazz of classic recordings by John Coltrane, abstract dance forms of Arthur Russell and the unfettered experimentation of Moondog. This is accompanied by a deep appreciation of the evolution of the UK's dubstep sound. Archie Pelago know all the classic early material and have honed in on the best creative potential that sound had to offer. They accomplish this synthesis as both a live and production unit. Meticulous, adventurous arrangement concepts flow and challenge the listener equally, meeting a healthy degree of on-the-fly processing and live improvisation that might threaten to undermine the balance if it weren't so damn NATURAL. 'Subway Gothic' became a fast favourite with us. The opening piano chords drip with pretty melancholy while the rhythm and bass propel the track forward. The vulnerable vocals, string sweeps and soulful sax enhance the mood to the point of exquisite joy. Soon after, the composition drops way down to rise and surprise again in a mid-section constructed from shadows, jolts, scrapes and odd shapes. The sudden re-appearance of our heroic piano heralds a resolution. Based on a repeated rhodes-loop, 'Ladymarkers' features some frankly delightful fingered-bass, flute, sax and cello over a beat that has an Afrobeat undercurrent. These instruments are treated to sublime fx and processing, adding psychedelic swells. A key change half-way through pivots the mood towards inquiry, self-examining the song?s melodic and modal possibilities. We don?t feel we need say more... other than those in a position to recognize WILL RECOGNIZE. Archie Pelago are on the next level. Look out for Archie performing Live in Europe this year.

The second release on the Mister Saturday Night label by Archie Pelago, a Brooklyn-based band that's played both the Mister Saturday Night and Mister Sunday parties. They're a trio of players whose lighthearted name belies the seriousness of their music. Consisting of a classically trained cellist, a classically trained saxophone player and a live programmer/DJ, they make songs that work as well on dancefloors as they do in headphones. More

Throughout her much-lauded career as a DJ and producer, Ciel has worked hard to build community through events and DJ workshops in her home city of Toronto and on a larger scale with podcasts and projects meant to elevate women artists. The title of her latest EP, “All We Have Is Each Other,” reflects her history of mutual support, and in these times when so many of our connections seem broken by the pandemic, it offers a reminder that music still has the power to unite us.

Ciel has never been an artist who lets genres define or constrain her, so it seems only fitting that this release lands on Mister Saturday Night Records, a New York City label with a similar ethos. It’s in this refusal to restrict her sound to narrow definitions that something magical happens.

This 5-track EP spanning dance floor fillers and home listening pieces builds on a frame of tough footwork-paced kick drums, the skip and swing of 2-step garage, broken house, and slow, meditative beats. Woven throughout are hopeful melodies, dappled with sunlight tones and layered with organic percussion. The connective tissue is a deep feeling of joy and hopefulness in the power of music and collective humanity.

When the world goes up in flames, all we have is each other. Music connects us with like-minded communities that both shelter and empower us. With this emotive collection of diverse songs, Ciel reaches out a hand and invites us to be a part of something beautiful and authentic. More

During the pandemic shut down of 2020 we became absorbed and obsessed by one record in particular. That record, released digitally via Mexico City label N.A.A.F.I., was ‘Get Free’ by TYGAPAW, which features multidisciplinary artist Mandy Harris Williams. A complete body of work intersecting their musical and cultural roots, this is an 11-track collection of hard-hitting, cathartic energy, exploring black joy, the active dismantling of imagined limitations, and the eradication of self doubt using techno landscapes.

Upon learning that there was no plan to release the record on vinyl we started a conversation about making that happen on Mister Saturday Night Records.

Two years later and through numerous pressing delays we are honored to announce the belated release on two slabs of orange vinyl and updated artwork. More

We’re putting out the first Mister Saturday Night Records release in a long while. It’s by Russell E.L. Butler, and it’s called “Blah Blah”. The record comes out on Friday, September 4, and it contains three tracks made in Prague at the Synthesizer Library and one track made in Russell’s pre-New York home in Oakland.

On the EP’s release date Sept 4th, which is Bandcamp Day, all of the Mister Saturday Night Records share of Bandcamp proceeds from the release will go to Princess Janae Place, an organization that provides referrals to housing for chronically homeless LGBTQ adults in the New York Tri-state area, with direct emphasis on Trans/GNC people of color.

The vinyl release, designed by Boot Boyz Biz, includes a poster featuring these words from Russell:

What are my dreams when they are spoken into real space? Are they statements centering my desires? Are they indictments to hold myself accountable to my vision of life?

My consciousness is meandering and at times I celebrate this drone of words. Stripped of meaning, to reveal what’s beneath. Not an answer, but further questions. The purpose of the mantra is to quiet the conscious mind until the spirit takes over.

Place is important. It grounds the abstract in our humanity. These things came from somewhere. Many places. To culminate into one. Connecting them all. And creating something entirely new. Not an answer, but more questions.

He then moved to Detroit to apprentice with Mad Mike Banks, performing as part of Los Hermanos and Galaxy to Galaxy. More than twenty years on, he still lives and breathes music. Shore is a vibraphonist and composer based in Brooklyn. Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter from Mister Saturday Night met him through NYC music institution, Nublu, where he worked with the legendary jazz maestro Butch Morris and Sex Mob and Tom Waits drummer Kenny Wollesen. At the very first Planetarium listening session, where Eamon and Justin blend records into live performances for people sprawled on the floor of a loft for six hours, one of Justin's friends leaned over to him and asked, "What is this record? It's amazing." It wasn't a record. It was Shore, playing A Hundred Times in the corner of the room.

When he returned to Japan, he got to working on the music we now present to you on The Clay EP. This is Jun blending loopy, psychedelic disco stylings with chugging drum work for three party-ready cuts. They've been chopping up our dance floors months; we're excited to hear them do the same to yours. More

Nathan Melja is the same young Frenchman whose debut EP we released under the name Melja late last year. Since then, he moved to New York and worked at Mister HQ for a few months, manned the light booth at the Mister Saturday Night and Mister Sunday parties (DJs make the best light guys), and spent most of his time outside that making music. Leo Draws is the culmination of that music-making, two murky but beautiful tracks centered around vocal samples and one off-kilter number aimed at the dark corners of the dancefloor. More

Atlus is a young man with the world on his shoulders. He holds it from misty Glasgow, where he spends most of his time in the halls of Rubadub. In the three songs on this epic EP, he lifts up party-melting disco house, clanging ambience and bubbling techno – and not for a second does he hint at letting the ball drop.
