NYC dance music legend Joey Longo has been a part of the dance music soundscape for those in the know from way back when, his first records surfacing in 1989 under a variety of monikers and on a slew of labels out of NYC. Some (Cabaret, Loop d'Loop, Foot Stompin') were his own, others (Underworld, Maxi, Minimal) not, but the they always came bearing the credit 'produced by Pal Joey'. Joey hit the heights early on, as one of his earliest records, Dance (as Earth People), went big in dance music terms. If you were raving in the early '90s chances are you will be getting flashbacks from 'Dance', as it was played across a number of scenes. A deeper 'beats' mix features on this gem of an album, his first in over 10 years, along with a perfectly selected blend of classic cuts, new versions and remixes and unreleased wonders. Mastered to perfection, but keeping his raw New York style.

Pal Joey (aka Joseph Longo) came up in the heady days of New York street culture, amidst B-boying, boom boxes and an unusually entrepreneurial spirit of beat-making. Beginning with crude "pause tapes," he was soon making tracks with drum machines and sampled vocals, all painstakingly assembled with razors and reel-to-reel. Working at Vinylmania, where Larry Levan might be found shopping for records in his pajamas, helped Joey's entrance into the city's nascent house music scene, and he was soon working with everyone from KRS-One to Sade to the Orb, whose "Little Fluffy Clouds" he tweaked for stateside tastes. True to his city's inclusive spirit, Pal Joey consistently blurs the lines between disco, house and hip-hop, dropping scraps of old soul and recent rap alike over his skipping drum patterns and head-nodding keyboard lines. Joey's records (under his principal moniker and also aliases like Earth People and Soho) have appeared on Jive, Epic, Talkin' Loud, Wave and Coco Machete. He also has run three labels of his own - Loop D'Loop, Cabaret and Footstompin' Records.

Creating something selfexistent might be the most difficult part of doing arts - something that isn't just a rigid thing but an entity of itself. Our goal is to bear something upon our technical possibilities without involving any other entity's energy.
Our selfexistent entity should be made up of dead matter and brought to life by technical components which interact with their surrounding and make decisions based on observations which are being analyzed and torn through programs to calculate potential procedures. It should not be limited to its current level of experience. To remain state-of-the-art, apprehension and intelligence are indispensable capabilities our entity should be able to make use of.
The needed technology is basically built on coincidental scientific observations which have been analyzed, processed and at best industrialized. This only works on repetitive or - even better - repeatable processes, because otherwise an industrialization would make no sense. As a result nature is being squeezed into our own pattern of predictability.
But there is a fundamental problem: intelligence cannot be satisfied with predictability. Entities bound to programs are always waiting for known and already categorized input. They cannot handle yet unknown impressions or re-categorize them. Intelligence is beyond predictability - it deals with the unknown and tries to integrate it into the limited and predictable world, of which itself is - and will always be - part.
We have to ask ourself: will it ever be possible? And is it worth it all?

It’s rough & ready deep house that’s been road-tested on cultivated dance floors, including

Two years ago, a good friend - who knows stuff - suggested I should do a live show. Thinking it an

Distilled down to the essentials, my live touring rig consists of four main pieces of gear -
Sequentix Cirklon, Roland MC-707 & TR-8S, and a 1010 Music Blackbox.
This process led to making music in a new way that harks back to the 90’s when I started - all
hardware, minimal gear and recording versions straight down to the Studer A80 Tape machine.
These tracks are the beginnings of the fruits of this process.

It’s rough & ready deep house that’s been road-tested on cultivated dance floors, including
Heidigluhen, Block 9, Sunset Sound System and Love International.
Two years ago, a good friend - who knows stuff - suggested I should do a live show. Thinking it an
interesting concept, I started building the idea of a full set with new and old music, and set up my
hardware in a way that would allow me to make it work.

For over two decades, the humble duo behind Extrawelt, who shy away from making music for clicks, have been a steadfast presence in electronic music.
