First up in D’Julz’s ‘The School of Night’ EP on his Bass Culture label is ‘Nu Bass’, a fresh and upbeat house sound with kinetic percussion and well-swung drums. Steamy vocal coos and deft synth stabs build a compelling future vibe before ‘Spooky Electrik’ comes in with more punchy but deep house sound. Dancing hi-hats pepper the groove along with curious little synth motifs, bringing a cosmic feel while the all-important bassline powers things forward. D’Julz’s knack for cooking up killer grooves is evident again on ‘Money, Honey, Monday?’ which is jacked up and percussive but also hugely seductive, with the smeared vocals and warming pads keeping things classy and soulful. Last of all, ‘Triperie’ is more menacing and stripped back – a paranoid lead synth roams about the mix as the crisp drums rise and fall in a fashion that will get floors marching late into the night.

As we move into 2019, the captain of the good ship Bass Culture steers the label to its latest release with D’Julz delivering a hot new threetrack EP. The seasoned Parisian maestro channels his years of experience into this new release, with a polished collection of tracks, all centred on the dance floor with subtle, yet persuasive production across all three cuts. As you may expect from D’Julz and Bass Culture, there is plenty of depth, energy and low end to keep those hips swinging and heads nodding… On side A things get off to a bouncy start with ‘Lemon Juice’, a funky little number with lively drum programming and a very spirited bassline. Quite minimal in its production, this cut uses its relative simplicity to grab you and keep you hypnotised until the very end. Flip the record over and side B starts with ‘Wrecka Stow’ taking us on a dark side ride. D’Julz kicks off side B in style with this driving techy cut. A simmering energy pervades throughout as he gently builds the tension, working from a spellbinding riff that repeats over and over. Occasional dips and rises in the energy create electrifying moments, as this rolls out with a deadly rhythm. Lastly, there’s ‘Singularity’, a sombre dance into the wilderness. This dreamy, mellow cut is pushed along by softened breaks and a subdued bassline. D’Julz tantalises our emotions with wistful atmospherics that send chills down your spine as you venture ever deeper into he misty realms of the eerie world he has created. A fitting end to the EP.... There we have it, D’Julz returns to his beloved label with a formidable new collection of tracks. Genial!

It’s time for the next release on long-running Paris label Bass Culture and owner D’Julz has invited a crack team of talented individuals to deliver the magic to this latest instalment in the label’s release schedule. This extra special remix package features contributions from the legendary DJ Skull, along with Sebo K, Henrik Bergqvist and Romanian MP. The bossman’s own 2015 EP ‘Houdini’ is the subject of this exquisite bunch of reworks, giving the whole release a fresh lick of paint from a group of artists handpicked by D’Julz to get to work on his productions. The title track ‘Houdini’ is first in line, with the mighty DJ Skull on remix duty. The Chi-town legend has been a favourite of D’Julz since the early nineties when he was releasing on labels such as Djax-Up-Beats. The funk-imbued workout he creates from the original production is superb and a testament to someone who has been involved in music for three decades and still going strong. Keeping DJ Skull’s remix company on the A-side is Sebo K with his take on ‘Serendipity’. Following on from his outstanding EP ‘Brock Wild’, Sebo returns to Bass Culture with another taught dance floor cut, full of swing and groove, pushed along with a strong, insistent energy. On the flipside the deep sultry flavours continue to bubble up. Two more dynamic artists bring their unique touch to Bass Culture and the first is the Romanian wonderkid MP (Mihai Popescu), who has previously released on the sub-label Bass Culture Limited. His reinterpretation of ‘Serendipity’ is deep, nuanced and quirky with a simmering atmosphere throughout.Last but certainly not least is the Swedish maestro Henrik Bergqvist. ‘Waiting 4 Visa’ gets a kick in its step, with mysterious cosmic FX layered over a mesmerising bassline and a collection of bleeps and chirps that really bring the remix to life. And there it is, four superb new mixes of three great tracks… enjoy!

D’Julz’s ‘Ze Box’ Ep, his 2014 debut for Robsoul, remains one the labels most popular to date. Now, as the Frenchman and renowned House luminary embarks on what is already a landmark year personally; he returns to the label to follow up last years Edits outing with a sultry new selection of tracks on the ‘Foxxy’ Ep. 2017 signals the twentieth anniversary of D’Julz’s seminal Bass Culture club night at Rex Club in Paris. A celebration of a party born from frustration with his City’s scene, it went on to become one of the longest standing and most respected nights of a generation. Sharing the booth with just one invited artist each night, each playing extended sets, gave the Parisian a perfect outlet for perfecting his craft. Skills honed at those Bass Culture nights not only helped craft an enviable DJ style, but also influenced his talent in both a&r’ing for his Bass Culture record label and the production of his own music. The Foxxy Ep finds D’Julz in a playful mood. ‘Ze Fox’ opens up with its stretched filters, funky guitar lick and merry vocal. The jittery hats of ‘Big Kid’ follows with its disco loops and sunshine vibe delivering smiles for miles, making you, yeah, feel like a big kid. ’Next’ is the cute little heartbreaker that brings this Foxxy Ep to a close. Its rough, juddering and yet grooving bassline is matched with synth washes, piercing snares and bird calls to create a perfect finale to a perfect EP.

Bass Culture’s latest release comes straight from the studio of the label head, D’Julz. A man who draws on dub influences, groove and deep soul-enriching rhythms, D’Julz is a member of the Paris old school fraternity and brings that classic sound right into the 21st Century with his Houdini EP.Across three tracks we have a selection of music that epitomises what he’s all about. The title track gets things rolling with a sultry groove pervading throughout, crunchy claps add depth while fizzing synth lines and throwback yelps give it plenty of character. Second track ‘Waiting 4 Visa’ is a classy breakbeat-led outing, delicate effects loom in the background entrancing the listener while the minimal composition keeps things simple and hypnotic. Lastly ‘Serendipity’ takes us a few layers deeper, with a laid-back bounce and chirpy bleeps really bringing it to life. For the first Circus Company record of 2013, our dear old friend Julien Veniel returns once more to the fold to deliver an EP polished with a cosmic allure that continues our trajectory into the outer realms of house and techno possibilities. D'Julz is of course no stranger to our star-gazing bandwagon, having already delivered two previous EPs for us over the years, but even these considerable contributions represent just a drop in the ocean in the back catalogue of our fellow Parisian brother. With his widely celebrated Bass Culture label, and releases for such powerhouses as 20:20 Vision, Ovum and Dessous over a career stretching back to '92 the man knows what is needed to communicate to the dancefloor. This EP is no different, with Julien combining the psychoactive effect of his hypnotic melodic content with rigid, unflinching drums, leading the mind and body down seperate paths for that most honest of physical and mental responses. Rather than forcing such an effect on the unsuspecting listener, an inescapable seduction is at work in those shapeless pads and warming tones, which makes the submission to his message all the more unconscious. From disembodied vocal flutters to throbbing bass lines, it's impossible to refuse the invitation to close the eyes and jack the body at any point within these three tracks. Delivered with a refinement and attention to detail that can only come from a life lived in service to the music of the night, 'Special Day' contains all the mysticism and groove that we require in order to continue the tale of Circus Company into yet another year of unforgettable music.

ZKY’s ‘New Standards’ EP on Bass Culture opens up with ‘Zycho’, a lithe house sound with wispy pads that bring cosmic colour to its dynamic groove. The third and final part of Bass Culture’s 10th anniversary package is here and we end on a high with two of the label’s brothers alongside the bossman himself, D’Julz. Also contributing to this milestone celebration are Leo Pol and Mr. G. For 10 years Bass Culture has maintained the highest standards when it comes to house and techno, releasing some seminal productions and becoming a go-to label for many of the scene’s true connoisseurs. This final installment of the 10 Years Of Bass Culture series keeps the quality as high as ever...
D’Julz leads the way with ‘Synchronicity’ a smooth groove that wraps you up in its smoky atmosphere. Once it gets rolling a mystical, flute-driven riff drifts in, evoking Middle Eastern rhythms as it dances above the seductive bassline. Subtle percussive elements shimmy and slide around the main break loop, keeping the energy levels on point. Magnifique!
Leo Pol steps up next with ‘Established 1991’. As the title suggests this cut has a retro-leaning outlook, conjuring up images of a warehouse rave on the outskirts of Paris in the early nineties. A deep bassline works alongside soft pads and strings with a stripped back drum arrangement. The beats really kick in just after the two minute mark, with the kicks and claps adding a dynamic layer to this simmering cut.
Last, but certainly not least, the right honourable Mr. G steps up with ‘Now Is The Time!’. As you might expect, the production and energy on this cut are utterly compelling. A moody start is peppered with a classic reggae sample as the tension slowly builds. Mr. G takes a considered approach, keep it dark and deadly without overcooking any of the elements, the brooding vibe simmering away from start to end. Unveiling the second installment from Bass Culture’s 10th anniversary package. Over the past decade D’Julz has established Bass Culture as one of the most respected outlets for authentic house and techno, focused squarely on the underground, designed to work the floor and give your body, mind and soul a large dose of bass-driven groove. Across three EPs, the label is unleashing fresh new music from an all-star cast of core family members - artists who have been part of the label’s success from the very early days, up until now. On Part Two we kick off with ‘Haze 1997’ by Mark Ambrose. With rugged, tribal-esque beats at its foundation this cut is taking no prisoners. Soon, a heinous bassline rolls in giving this one its fierce character. Cosmic pads drift in, with chirps and chimes that balance out the thick low end frequencies. Next up is Lady Blacktronika with ‘Congrats Bitch’, a typically bouncy production with skippy percussion and a seriously gnarly bassline. This one will send tremors through the dance floor. Add in the wistful analogue stabs that punctuate the top end and you’ve got a potent weapon to work the clubs with…On the flip side Alex Picone steps up with a contemplative yet punchy cut entitled ‘Melting Moon’. This is a soulful, groovy little number that will have your hips slinking from side to side, as it captivates your mind with its glistening effects and smooth b-line. Alex gives this one a touch of class, as only he can. Lastly, Chicago bossman DJ Skull delivers a funky cut to close the EP. ‘Mood’ blends jazz, funk and soul with the core foundations of real house music to create a wonderfully energetic track full of sexy, sassy vibes. As we move into 2019, the captain of the good ship Bass Culture steers the label to its latest release with D’Julz delivering a hot new threetrack EP. The seasoned Parisian maestro channels his years of experience into this new release, with a polished collection of tracks, all centred on the dance floor with subtle, yet persuasive production across all three cuts. As you may expect from D’Julz and Bass Culture, there is plenty of depth, energy and low end to keep those hips swinging and heads nodding… On side A things get off to a bouncy start with ‘Lemon Juice’, a funky little number with lively drum programming and a very spirited bassline. Quite minimal in its production, this cut uses its relative simplicity to grab you and keep you hypnotised until the very end. Flip the record over and side B starts with ‘Wrecka Stow’ taking us on a dark side ride. D’Julz kicks off side B in style with this driving techy cut. A simmering energy pervades throughout as he gently builds the tension, working from a spellbinding riff that repeats over and over. Occasional dips and rises in the energy create electrifying moments, as this rolls out with a deadly rhythm. Lastly, there’s ‘Singularity’, a sombre dance into the wilderness. This dreamy, mellow cut is pushed along by softened breaks and a subdued bassline. D’Julz tantalises our emotions with wistful atmospherics that send chills down your spine as you venture ever deeper into he misty realms of the eerie world he has created. Chicago pioneer DJ Skull steps up for the latest Bass Culture release bringing that original energy as only a native of the Windy City can do. After remixing ‘Houdini’ by D’Julz earlier this year it’s an honour to welcome DJ Skull back to the label for his debut EP. Skull’s depth of experience dates back the mideighties when he began to play house music when he was just 10 years old. Fast forward to 2018 and he’s still deeply involved with the music, keeping the passion alive and traveling across the world to spread the house music gospel. On this threetrack EP he brings the funk, undiluted and fresh with chunky bass, crisp beats and hints of acid coming through.On the Aside we have ‘Powered Funk’, a delightful cut with a laid back groove and a contagious rhythm that gets under your skin immediately. The beats skip along with precision, keeping the energy levels high while the low end keeps your hips swinging and head nodding. The main melody is uplifting and evolves into a symphony of positive vibrations. Flip the record over and side B kicks off with ‘Bopping’, a pianoled jam with the keys working in tandem with the gentle flutter of a flute and a jazzy double bass providing the heart and soul of the cut. Skull rolls this one out masterfully, with gentle progression and non stop energy throughout. Finally, we have the aptlynamed ‘Aseed’, a 303inspired track which uses that infamous acidsound to great effect. The low end rumbles along purposefully, with crisp 4x4 beats pushing things forward and that irresistable acid riff inducing the listener into a state of hypnosis. Bass Culture welcomes Frenchman Leo Pol to the fold for this fresh new four-tracker full of analogue vibes. Leo’s penchant for synthesisers and the warmth of his beloved machines is evident throughout this new release, with a retro soul spliced with modern sensibilities and, of course, visions of the future. Things get off to an energetic start with ‘Caliente’, a track that combines a killer main riff, scintillating pads and steam-powered percussion to really get those feet moving. This is followed by ‘Fnc Burning’, which totally slips the script with its off-kilter rhythm and UK-influenced breakbeat-esque sound. It’s time for the next release on long-running Paris label Bass Culture and owner D’Julz has invited a crack team of talented individuals to deliver the magic to this latest instalment in the label’s release schedule. This extra special remix package features contributions from the legendary DJ Skull, along with Sebo K, Henrik Bergqvist and Romanian MP. The bossman’s own 2015 EP ‘Houdini’ is the subject of this exquisite bunch of reworks, giving the whole release a fresh lick of paint from a group of artists handpicked by D’Julz to get to work on his productions. The title track ‘Houdini’ is first in line, with the mighty DJ Skull on remix duty. The Chi-town legend has been a favourite of D’Julz since the early nineties when he was releasing on labels such as Djax-Up-Beats. The funk-imbued workout he creates from the original production is superb and a testament to someone who has been involved in music for three decades and still going strong. Keeping DJ Skull’s remix company on the A-side is Sebo K with his take on ‘Serendipity’. Following on from his outstanding EP ‘Brock Wild’, Sebo returns to Bass Culture with another taught dance floor cut, full of swing and groove, pushed along with a strong, insistent energy. On the flipside the deep sultry flavours continue to bubble up. Two more dynamic artists bring their unique touch to Bass Culture and the first is the Romanian wonderkid MP (Mihai Popescu), who has previously released on the sub-label Bass Culture Limited. His reinterpretation of ‘Serendipity’ is deep, nuanced and quirky with a simmering atmosphere throughout.Last but certainly not least is the Swedish maestro Henrik Bergqvist. ‘Waiting 4 Visa’ gets a kick in its step, with mysterious cosmic FX layered over a mesmerising bassline and a collection of bleeps and chirps that really bring the remix to life. The label owned by Paris stalwart D’Julz welcomes back an old friend in Anonym, the man responsible for BCR006 and BCR021 returns for a four-track outing which includes a remix from Orlando Voorn. Sultry atmospherics and masterful production are evident throughout this crisp new addition to the Bass Culture catalogue, another instant classic from the Detroit badboy Anonym.The first of the four tracks on this EP goes by the name of ‘Castaway’, and its effortless groove will have you drifting away to a desert island the second you hear it. As a slightly obscured vocal repeats ‘castaway’ over and over, you’re lulled into a dreamlike state. Simple and highly effective, its progression is subtle and invigorating. Right after that we have Dutch supremo Orlando Voorn taking charge of the remix and pushing the track deeper into celestial territory with flashes of synth that transport you out into the cosmos. The atmosphere of the original is expertly retained, with a steady pace and cool, mellow vibes throughout. Flip the record over and there are two more killer cuts. First we have ‘Doin It To Ya Body’, which keeps things minimal and straight to the point. Bright disco strings lie at the heart of this track, slowly weaving their way in and out of the background while the drums and rugged b-line keep your feet moving and head bopping. Lastly, ‘Wara Coco’ offers more hypnotic vibes drawing you with its dainty melody, dancing around the top end, while a mean bassline throbs away, deep down in the low end. It’s an strong combination and finishes off the EP in style.

Bass Culture welcomes another industry heavyweight to its roster of talent with this new release, which follows hot on the heels of the killer 50th release by Mr. G. This latest release comes from long time friend of Bass Culture owner D’Julz and Dutch techno hero Steve Rachmad. Steve is renowned for his funky take on techno, honing his skills as a DJ and producer over 25 years and establishing himself as a respected and hugely talented artist in the process. The first of two tracks on this new EP is entitled ‘Sabre Song’ - a stomping, illuminating cut straight out of the Rachmad school of Detroit-influenced techno. D’Julz heard Steve play the track at Womb in Tokyo and had to sign it on the spot. ‘Sabre Song’ is a perfect fit for Bass Culture with its groovy bassline, cutting hats and ‘big band’ instrumentation. On the flip D’Julz himself contributes an edit of one of Steve’s nineties classic, a favourite of his and one which both men agreed should be given a release. Pumping out at a speedy tempo, the force is strong with ‘Activa’, transporting us back to the rave era with its catchy melody, and retro physique. Summer vibes all the way with this one.

Let's get it straight: "This is" is THE album by Ghia. It catches the band at its peak and features 10 songs, including not only their impeccable hit, "What's Your Voodoo?" but a full arsenal of yet unheard, timeless, and soulful music without equal. The songs on the album, which were recorded between 1988 and 1991, could be considered forerunners of the downtempo genre, with one foot in the late 1980s street soul direction but sparkling with touches of synth pop and contemporary jazz-funk. Genre limitations aside, all that Ghia ever wanted to do was create music-good music-and you will hear this in the depth of the compositions.
The album starts with "Keep Your House In Disorder," which has yet again become another classic song from the band's catalog since it was featured as the B-side of the "What's Your Voodoo?" reissue. The song is about a relationship in which the woman has trouble adapting to her boyfriend's turn in life. He tells her to "keep your house in disorder," meaning don't take things too seriously, don't stand still, and you will do better to take the sideroads in life.
"This Is" continues with the downtempo numbers "Crystal Silence" and "Close to You." Both are deep, one-of-a-kind, and previously unissued street soul ballads. On these two tracks, you can still hear the band's roots in jazz-funk. Hence, as a follower of the band's output may have yet recognized, instrumentals of these two tracks can be found on their first LP, "Curaçao Blue." In fact, "Close to You" was one of the band's first compositions. Earlier recordings of the song exist with different singers and different vocals, but it wasn't perfect until Lisa laid down the final version and a choir was added. It's difficult for us to recall any late-80s soul tune as beautiful and intriguing as this one. The final section, which begins with "so much baby we can say," sounds ahead of its time, reminiscent of mid-90s contemporary R&B.
Next up is "Eskimo," an equally brilliant and soulful downtempo composition, but with more focus on synth sounds than the previous tracks. Once more, it showcases the creative lyricism of the song writers, Boberg and Simon, imagining a train ride during a rainy and cold night: "feeling like an Eskimo in an igloo in New York."
Eskimo leads to the aforementioned classic, "What's Your Voodoo?" Originally released in 1991 on the small Mikado label, it was reissued on our label in 2019. We already called this "one of the most wonderful and mystic slow motion synth pop tunes ever recorded"-and we still mean it! Let's face it: this was done before British bands like Massive Attack, Tricky, and Portishead laid the foundation of trip-hop. Dare we call Ghia's music "proto trip-hop"? As a special bonus, the digital version of the LP features a previously unreleased mix of the song, which includes added samples; this should clarify how close Ghia actually was to the sound of the mid-'90s.
"Angel On Your Shoulder" and "L O M E" are two more completely unissued and great tracks from the band's shelved works. Being a bit more uptempo than the rest of the album, they fall between contemporary soul/R&B and synthesized pop music. And of course, another downtempo hit needed to be featured on the album: "You Won't Sleep on My Pillow." It was the original A-side of their single release in 1991, and since then it has been featured on various compilations.
The album concludes with a really strong ballad entitled "I Haven't Got The Power." Here we hear only pianist and keyboardist Lutz Boberg with Lisa Ohm, without further instrumentation. Basically recorded in a live session, this showcases once more the talent and ingenuity within the Ghia project.
Whether you agree or not, "This is" may easily be considered one of the best German late 80s/early 90s soul pop and downtempo albums ever recorded. Cautiously, it may even be submitted as the missing link between mid/late 80s soul by bands such as Sade, and later trip-hop groups like Massive Attack. Let us celebrate Ghia and their music, which had been shelved for more than 30 years but has now finally been released on The Outer Edge.

Hence, as a follower of the band's output may have yet recognized, instrumentals of these two tracks can be found on their first LP, "Curaçao Blue." In fact, "Close to You" was one of the band's first compositions. Earlier recordings of the song exist with different singers and different vocals, but it wasn't perfect until Lisa laid down the final version and a choir was added. It's difficult for us to recall any late-80s soul tune as beautiful and intriguing as this one. The final section, which begins with "so much baby we can say," sounds ahead of its time, reminiscent of mid-90s contemporary R&B.
Next up is "Eskimo," an equally brilliant and soulful downtempo composition, but with more focus on synth sounds than the previous tracks. Once more, it showcases the creative lyricism of the song writers, Boberg and Simon, imagining a train ride during a rainy and cold night: "feeling like an Eskimo in an igloo in New York."
Eskimo leads to the aforementioned classic, "What's Your Voodoo?" Originally released in 1991 on the small Mikado label, it was reissued on our label in 2019. We already called this "one of the most wonderful and mystic slow motion synth pop tunes ever recorded"-and we still mean it! Let's face it: this was done before British bands like Massive Attack, Tricky, and Portishead laid the foundation of trip-hop. Dare we call Ghia's music "proto trip-hop"? As a special bonus, the digital version of the LP features a previously unreleased mix of the song, which includes added samples; this should clarify how close Ghia actually was to the sound of the mid-'90s.
"Angel On Your Shoulder" and "L O M E" are two more completely unissued and great tracks from the band's shelved works. Being a bit more uptempo than the rest of the album, they fall between contemporary soul/R&B and synthesized pop music. And of course, another downtempo hit needed to be featured on the album: "You Won't Sleep on My Pillow." It was the original A-side of their single release in 1991, and since then it has been featured on various compilations.
The album concludes with a really strong ballad entitled "I Haven't Got The Power." Here we hear only pianist and keyboardist Lutz Boberg with Lisa Ohm, without further instrumentation. Basically recorded in a live session, this showcases once more the talent and ingenuity within the Ghia project.
Whether you agree or not, "This is" may easily be considered one of the best German late 80s/early 90s soul pop and downtempo albums ever recorded. Cautiously, it may even be submitted as the missing link between mid/late 80s soul by bands such as Sade, and later trip-hop groups like Massive Attack. Let us celebrate Ghia and their music, which had been shelved for more than 30 years but has now finally been released on The Outer Edge.

The Outer Edge is proud to present the first ever vinyl release of "No Message" by Art P, a still lesser known and lost masterpiece from the P.A.P. archives. Art P (initially Art Programming) was an electronic music duo consisting of Jens-Markus Wegener and Frank Grotelüschen. On "No Message", originally released in 1985, we hear the band's most profound work, a detailed and unique mixture in between of Electro and the synth-laden edge of New Wave.

It was an absolute necessity for us to get in touch with Art P and ask for permission to re-release their music on vinyl.
"No Message" was remastered from the absolute best original tape source and sounds incredibly well. The release is limited to 300 copies and will be pressed on blue vinyl. It contains an insert with lyrics and additional art. We think it is save to say, that this should not be missed!
As a side note it should be mentioned that Wegener later became a key figure in the German music market. He was the founder of companies such as Public Propaganda, Europe's largest and most successful promotion agency in the mid '90s, the publishing company AMV, the distributor PP Sales Forces, among others. As a freelance promoter for SPV and the PIAS label he was also responsible for establishing the term Electronic Body Music as a musical genre. Grotelüschen was active as a music journalist (e.g. for Spex magazine) and later became an important and well known journalist for science.

And it is simply mind-blowing, to say the least! The LP features 10 unreleased tracks in a similar Balearic vein as featured on the single.
Incredibly, it was only just a few months ago that these tracks were rediscovered on some old tapes by band members Lutz Boberg and Frank Simon. Could anyone imagine that two physics students from a small German town could create such beautiful, thrilling music in their home studio? Although the technical aspects in the creation of the band's earliest tracks may have been straightforward, the outcome is high-quality, creative, modern jazz-funk, with one step in the electro-funk genre due to the use of a drum machine and synthesizer basslines. The album features mostly 4-track recordings, based mainly on the musicians' weapons of choice: a DX21 keyboard (later updated to the legendary DX7) and a guitar. Many things had to be done live in just one take, though the artists were unafraid of using overdubbing techniques to weave their instrumental journeys. The DIY aesthetics just add more beauty and uniqueness to the songs and compositions, and the result is an extremely harmonic work of undeniable musicality. Ghia delivers Balearic jazz-funk at its finest.
Though the music was recorded in Germany, Ghia had a true relationship with the Balearic region and effortlessly applied the vibes to their compositions. As a side note, one track on their earliest demo tapes was called "3 AM at Moëf Gaga" and we did not know what it meant. The band explained that Moëf Gaga is a nightclub on the Spanish coast that is actually still active today. Boberg and Simon, the two original band members of Ghia, visited the club in the early 80s and spent their holiday close to the sea. With their music, they intended to create a summery vibe, capturing a relaxed and soulful view of the seashore, likely with a drink in hand... Perhaps a Blue Curaçao?
The album starts with a revised version of the title track. The drums in this take are much punchier, and we thought that it would fit just perfectly as an introduction. We continue with the already classic "Down At The Hilton" that was featured on the single, but like us, we are sure you could happily listen to this track on repeat. Next up, "Jump In The Water" opens with a catchy delayed melody, which develops into another perfect jazz-funk piece with an extended guitar solo. Another remarkable song might be "In The Fast Lane". As the name suggests, an uptempo number, now with an electro-funk beat combined with speedy keyboard solos that almost sounds like a marimba. On side B, the album keeps the relaxed seaside vibes flowing. To round out the album, we are treated to two pieces that originated after the return home, with memories of the Spanish coast fading but still lingering, likely recorded between 1986 and 1988. Both are instrumental versions of songs to be used later for studio sessions with their new band member, singer Lisa Ohm (who you will hear on Ghia's next album!). On "Crystal Silence In Dub" we get a perfect downtempo groove, positively reminding us of the sound of the 1980s UK funk scene. The album ends with "Keep Your House In Disorder", here as an earlier, rougher, and funkier take than on the final vocal version, which could be found on the B-side of the "What's Your Voodoo" single.

Their musical venture began earnestly after an introduction to Alan McGee, head of Creation Records. Another EP from the vaults of West Coast rave scene specialists, Michael Kandel and Tom Chasteen. A side has two versions of a fast passed dancefloor oriented production tactfully presenting woven layers of rhythmic elements underneath dubbed out effects, “Crazy Jane” possibly channeling moments of Debbie Harris' “Heart of Glass” on LSD. B side gets more aggressive on many levels with a bit of a downtempo Gabber feel to it, raging synths and generous cymbal action all around, 3 versions, one of them featuring samples from Jimmy Stewart's 1946 monologue in “It's A Wonderful Life”, another one with very non-western elements mixed in, and finally Juan Ramos bringing a very dancefloor friendly version with a slight Euro-Dance late Hi-NRG edge to it.
