First up in D’Julz’s ‘The School of Night’ EP on his Bass Culture label is ‘Nu Bass’, a fresh and upbeat house sound with kinetic percussion and well-swung drums. Steamy vocal coos and deft synth stabs build a compelling future vibe before ‘Spooky Electrik’ comes in with more punchy but deep house sound. Dancing hi-hats pepper the groove along with curious little synth motifs, bringing a cosmic feel while the all-important bassline powers things forward. D’Julz’s knack for cooking up killer grooves is evident again on ‘Money, Honey, Monday?’ which is jacked up and percussive but also hugely seductive, with the smeared vocals and warming pads keeping things classy and soulful. Last of all, ‘Triperie’ is more menacing and stripped back – a paranoid lead synth roams about the mix as the crisp drums rise and fall in a fashion that will get floors marching late into the night.

As we move into 2019, the captain of the good ship Bass Culture steers the label to its latest release with D’Julz delivering a hot new three­track EP. The seasoned Parisian maestro channels his years of experience into this new release, with a polished collection of tracks, all centred on the dance floor with subtle, yet persuasive production across all three cuts. As you may expect from D’Julz and Bass Culture, there is plenty of depth, energy and low end to keep those hips swinging and heads nodding… On side A things get off to a bouncy start with ‘Lemon Juice’, a funky little number with lively drum programming and a very spirited bassline. Quite minimal in its production, this cut uses its relative simplicity to grab you and keep you hypnotised until the very end. Flip the record over and side B starts with ‘Wrecka Stow’ taking us on a dark side ride. D’Julz kicks off side B in style with this driving techy cut. A simmering energy pervades throughout as he gently builds the tension, working from a spellbinding riff that repeats over and over. Occasional dips and rises in the energy create electrifying moments, as this rolls out with a deadly rhythm. Lastly, there’s ‘Singularity’, a sombre dance into the wilderness. This dreamy, mellow cut is pushed along by softened breaks and a subdued bassline. D’Julz tantalises our emotions with wistful atmospherics that send chills down your spine as you venture ever deeper into he misty realms of the eerie world he has created. It’s time for the next release on long-running Paris label Bass Culture and owner D’Julz has invited a crack team of talented individuals to deliver the magic to this latest instalment in the label’s release schedule. This extra special remix package features contributions from the legendary DJ Skull, along with Sebo K, Henrik Bergqvist and Romanian MP. The bossman’s own 2015 EP ‘Houdini’ is the subject of this exquisite bunch of reworks, giving the whole release a fresh lick of paint from a group of artists handpicked by D’Julz to get to work on his productions. The title track ‘Houdini’ is first in line, with the mighty DJ Skull on remix duty. The Chi-town legend has been a favourite of D’Julz since the early nineties when he was releasing on labels such as Djax-Up-Beats. The funk-imbued workout he creates from the original production is superb and a testament to someone who has been involved in music for three decades and still going strong. Keeping DJ Skull’s remix company on the A-side is Sebo K with his take on ‘Serendipity’. Following on from his outstanding EP ‘Brock Wild’, Sebo returns to Bass Culture with another taught dance floor cut, full of swing and groove, pushed along with a strong, insistent energy. On the flipside the deep sultry flavours continue to bubble up. Two more dynamic artists bring their unique touch to Bass Culture and the first is the Romanian wonderkid MP (Mihai Popescu), who has previously released on the sub-label Bass Culture Limited. His reinterpretation of ‘Serendipity’ is deep, nuanced and quirky with a simmering atmosphere throughout.Last but certainly not least is the Swedish maestro Henrik Bergqvist. ‘Waiting 4 Visa’ gets a kick in its step, with mysterious cosmic FX layered over a mesmerising bassline and a collection of bleeps and chirps that really bring the remix to life. D’Julz’s ‘Ze Box’ Ep, his 2014 debut for Robsoul, remains one the labels most popular to date. Now, as the Frenchman and renowned House luminary embarks on what is already a landmark year personally; he returns to the label to follow up last years Edits outing with a sultry new selection of tracks on the ‘Foxxy’ Ep. 2017 signals the twentieth anniversary of D’Julz’s seminal Bass Culture club night at Rex Club in Paris. A celebration of a party born from frustration with his City’s scene, it went on to become one of the longest standing and most respected nights of a generation. Sharing the booth with just one invited artist each night, each playing extended sets, gave the Parisian a perfect outlet for perfecting his craft. Skills honed at those Bass Culture nights not only helped craft an enviable DJ style, but also influenced his talent in both a&r’ing for his Bass Culture record label and the production of his own music. The Foxxy Ep finds D’Julz in a playful mood. ‘Ze Fox’ opens up with its stretched filters, funky guitar lick and merry vocal. The jittery hats of ‘Big Kid’ follows with its disco loops and sunshine vibe delivering smiles for miles, making you, yeah, feel like a big kid. ’Next’ is the cute little heartbreaker that brings this Foxxy Ep to a close. Its rough, juddering and yet grooving bassline is matched with synth washes, piercing snares and bird calls to create a perfect finale to a perfect EP.

D’Julz’s Bass Culture Records signs up ZKY for four exceptional deep house cuts.

ZKY’s ‘New Standards’ EP on Bass Culture opens up with ‘Zycho’, a lithe house sound with wispy pads that bring cosmic colour to its dynamic groove. It’s endlessly on the move and ramps up the tension with tripped-out chord movements. The fantastic ‘Floating Phonk’ then slows things down via funky loops and sprinkles of organic percussion. Filtered, cut-up vocal samples enter the mix next to smudged pads, adding warmth to ice-cold beats and otherworldly vocal murmurs.

‘Sonar Train’ showcases ZKY’s machine mastery, continuing his ‘New Standards’ EP on Bass Culture with grounded drum sounds accompanied by infectious synth work, making for a track set to light up any dance floor. ‘Feeling’ rounds out the release with muted chords and crawling, soft acid bass, swinging drum grooves getting things moving in this timeless new outing on D’Julz’s Bass Culture.

The third and final part of Bass Culture’s 10th anniversary package is here and we end on a high with two of the label’s brothers alongside the bossman himself, D’Julz. Also contributing to this milestone celebration are Leo Pol and Mr. G. For 10 years Bass Culture has maintained the highest standards when it comes to house and techno, releasing some seminal productions and becoming a go-to label for many of the scene’s true connoisseurs. This final installment of the 10 Years Of Bass Culture series keeps the quality as high as ever...
D’Julz leads the way with ‘Synchronicity’ a smooth groove that wraps you up in its smoky atmosphere. Once it gets rolling a mystical, flute-driven riff drifts in, evoking Middle Eastern rhythms as it dances above the seductive bassline. Subtle percussive elements shimmy and slide around the main break loop, keeping the energy levels on point. Magnifique!
Leo Pol steps up next with ‘Established 1991’. As the title suggests this cut has a retro-leaning outlook, conjuring up images of a warehouse rave on the outskirts of Paris in the early nineties. A deep bassline works alongside soft pads and strings with a stripped back drum arrangement. The beats really kick in just after the two minute mark, with the kicks and claps adding a dynamic layer to this simmering cut.
Last, but certainly not least, the right honourable Mr. G steps up with ‘Now Is The Time!’. As you might expect, the production and energy on this cut are utterly compelling. A moody start is peppered with a classic reggae sample as the tension slowly builds. Mr. G takes a considered approach, keep it dark and deadly without overcooking any of the elements, the brooding vibe simmering away from start to end. Unveiling the second installment from Bass Culture’s 10th anniversary package. Over the past decade D’Julz has established Bass Culture as one of the most respected outlets for authentic house and techno, focused squarely on the underground, designed to work the floor and give your body, mind and soul a large dose of bass-driven groove. Across three EPs, the label is unleashing fresh new music from an all-star cast of core family members - artists who have been part of the label’s success from the very early days, up until now. On Part Two we kick off with ‘Haze 1997’ by Mark Ambrose. With rugged, tribal-esque beats at its foundation this cut is taking no prisoners. Soon, a heinous bassline rolls in giving this one its fierce character. Cosmic pads drift in, with chirps and chimes that balance out the thick low end frequencies. Next up is Lady Blacktronika with ‘Congrats Bitch’, a typically bouncy production with skippy percussion and a seriously gnarly bassline. This one will send tremors through the dance floor. Add in the wistful analogue stabs that punctuate the top end and you’ve got a potent weapon to work the clubs with…On the flip side Alex Picone steps up with a contemplative yet punchy cut entitled ‘Melting Moon’. Chicago pioneer DJ Skull steps up for the latest Bass Culture release bringing that original energy as only a native of the Windy City can do. After remixing ‘Houdini’ by D’Julz earlier this year it’s an honour to welcome DJ Skull back to the label for his debut EP. Skull’s depth of experience dates back the mideighties when he began to play house music when he was just 10 years old. Fast forward to 2018 and he’s still deeply involved with the music, keeping the passion alive and traveling across the world to spread the house music gospel. On this threetrack EP he brings the funk, undiluted and fresh with chunky bass, crisp beats and hints of acid coming through.On the Aside we have ‘Powered Funk’, a delightful cut with a laid back groove and a contagious rhythm that gets under your skin immediately. The beats skip along with precision, keeping the energy levels high while the low end keeps your hips swinging and head nodding. The main melody is uplifting and evolves into a symphony of positive vibrations. Flip the record over and side B kicks off with ‘Bopping’, a pianoled jam with the keys working in tandem with the gentle flutter of a flute and a jazzy double bass providing the heart and soul of the cut. Skull rolls this one out masterfully, with gentle progression and non stop energy throughout. Bass Culture welcomes Frenchman Leo Pol to the fold for this fresh new four-tracker full of analogue vibes. Leo’s penchant for synthesisers and the warmth of his beloved machines is evident throughout this new release, with a retro soul spliced with modern sensibilities and, of course, visions of the future. Things get off to an energetic start with ‘Caliente’, a track that combines a killer main riff, scintillating pads and steam-powered percussion to really get those feet moving. This is followed by ‘Fnc Burning’, which totally slips the script with its off-kilter rhythm and UK-influenced breakbeat-esque sound. Get ready for a sublime breakdown, with more UK rave stylings in the second half… fresh!On the flip side we get ‘Dark Outside, which harks back to the early days of post-electro Detroit. Those formative years when masters like Juan Atkins were the soundtrack of Motor City… from the hushed, silky vocal to the cosmic bleeps, this is a homage to the ghosts of techno’s past, with a contemporary sheen.Finally, we finish up with ‘Techyes No!’, a dark, marauding stomper with a menacing atmosphere and spinetingling strings to really amplify the eerie feeling that pervades throughout. A UK techno powerhouse returns to Bass Culture for their 55th release, bringing the ruckus with four deadly cuts that combine killer beats with powerful bass and a high level of production, as you might expect from D’Julz’s respected label. Ben Sims appears under his Ron Bacardi alias with a follow up to 2015’s debut release, ‘Rock Your Body/First Effort’. Much like the first EP, Sims’ new release is fired up and ready to deliver its potent energy to the dance floors of the world.On the A side we’re met with ‘Windy City’, which kicks things off in frenetic style, its slamming beats colliding with the layers of analogue to produce a rather chaotic start to proceedings. This is followed by ‘Ready For Action’ a tough, bouncing cut featuring a delectable female vocal which really sets things off nicely.

The flipside continues in a similar vein as ‘One Left In The Chamber’ brings a smooth vibe, though with the emphasis still on the percussive side of things. Sims flexes his production muscles across all four tracks here, injecting the music with his years of experience on the road and in the studio. The last track is a ‘Beats Mix’ of ‘Ready For Action’, highlighting the focus on beats, beats and more beats, adding an extra touch to an already powerful track. nights get ever colder. The label owned by Paris stalwart D’Julz welcomes back an old friend in Anonym, the man responsible for BCR006 and BCR021 returns for a four-track outing which includes a remix from Orlando Voorn. Sultry atmospherics and masterful production are evident throughout this crisp new addition to the Bass Culture catalogue, another instant classic from the Detroit badboy Anonym.The first of the four tracks on this EP goes by the name of ‘Castaway’, and its effortless groove will have you drifting away to a desert island the second you hear it. As a slightly obscured vocal repeats ‘castaway’ over and over, you’re lulled into a dreamlike state. Simple and highly effective, its progression is subtle and invigorating. Right after that we have Dutch supremo Orlando Voorn taking charge of the remix and pushing the track deeper into celestial territory with flashes of synth that transport you out into the cosmos. The atmosphere of the original is expertly retained, with a steady pace and cool, mellow vibes throughout. Flip the record over and there are two more killer cuts. First we have ‘Doin It To Ya Body’, which keeps things minimal and straight to the point. Bright disco strings lie at the heart of this track, slowly weaving their way in and out of the background while the drums and rugged b-line keep your feet moving and head bopping. Lastly, ‘Wara Coco’ offers more hypnotic vibes drawing you with its dainty melody, dancing around the top end, while a mean bassline throbs away, deep down in the low end. It’s an strong combination and finishes off the EP in style.
