Deep’a & Biri curate a bevy of much-respected underground techno specialists to further unravel and reimagine the vital and sophisticated sounds of ‘Dominance’, their full-length LP released earlier in 2018.
Midnight Operator, the collaborative project of Mathew and Nathan Johnson, begin the set with their trippy and transcendent take on ‘False Memories’. A rare remix from the pair, their return has been worth the wait; an expertly executed techno excursion, it simultaneously burrows deeper into the psychedelic textures of the original, while providing a club-centred kick.
Further blending the experimental and the physical, Peter Van Hoesen provides a typically complex and compelling take on Voltage, deconstructing the original and expanding each element in myriad, rave-specific directions.
Deep’a & Biri enlist rising Dutch DJ-producer Deniro contributes a rolling, hypnotic version of Dominance’s spectral centrepiece, ‘Alpha Cephei’, while Z.I.P.P.O. charges down a tense, big-room industrial tunnel for his interpretation of ‘Seeking Solace’, hitting on a cathartic groove after a passage of uncompromising noise.
Concluding the EP, Steinlac’h Records founder Wice reimagines ‘Theories of Loneliness’ in dubby but propulsive fashion.

Taking a punk-like approach to a mixture of Latin, rai, and folk music, Les Negresses Vertes create an infectious dance music. Initially comprised of family members, friends and lovers, Les Negresses Vertes has come a long way since their earliest performances. Although most members of the band didn't play an instrument until coming together in late-1987, the grown has continued to evolve into a very exciting ensemble.
Les Negresses Vertes' climb to world-wide success has not come easy. On January 22, 1993, the group's lyricist, Noel Rota, best known as "Helno" and "Helno Rota De Lourcqua," died while attempting to overcome a serious drug addiction. Rota's twin brother, Ritier / Thierry, continues to perform with Haine Et Ses Amours. Since Rota's death, guitarist/vocalist Stefane Mellino and accordionist/vocalist Matthias Canavese, also known as Canavese and Matias, have assumed his role in the front line of Les Negresses Vertes. A native of Algeria, Mellino has lived in Paris since the early-1980s. During the six years before the band was formed, he spent his summers working in his parent's fishing net business and played with bands in Paris the rest of the year. The youngest member of Les Negresses Vertes, Canavese inherited much of his talent from his father, a laborer who became an entertainment promoter at the age of forty and now directs a circus school. Although he trained as an acrobat, he was forced to seek other avenues of expression following an accident. Other members of Les Negresses Vertes include guitarist, bassist and vocalist, Jean-Marie Paulus, trombone player and vocalist Abraham Sirinix and pianist, guitarist and vocalist Jo Roz.

In keeping with the eagerly awaited start of their Odyssey event series at Fabric London, the two Mallorcans Pig&Dan return to their roots, namely Cocoon Recordings, where their 2005 debut "Oh Yeah" signalled the start of their success story. Nine years on from their last album release for the label ("Terminate", 2009), Dan Duncan and Igor Tchkotoua have lost none of their sixth sense for moving the crowd as this uncluttered yet devilishly effective dancefloor double header proves.
"Reset Your Bassline" couldn‘t be more appropriately named, revealling itself over seven and a half adrenalin soaked minutes complete with a powerful, pumping bass and tightly programmed vocal samples (exclusively available on the digital release) alongside an instrumental dub. Already an indispensable addition to this autumn‘s set list, the flip side "Lost Another Angel" also delivers with a pure dose of afterhour bliss in both vocal and dub versions. Exactly one year after Lorenz’s debut EP on Dirt Crew he is back with a super funky follow up. With the recent
“Marakuja” track on our “Deep Love 2018” compilation he already set the tone to a much more fluid and organic live approach to his sound recording.
The opening title track “Belair” is a heavy “wurly” organ jam he developed mainly by playing live and afterwards finalizing it in his Cologne studio. After his recent tour and shows as part of the Detroit Swindle live outfit he really got into improvising and composing his tunes on the fly. The Funk is all over this one and it is a great uplifting “sunny” jam to play out. Following this one is the slower and deeper “Jubilee” that’s adding even more soul to the “Rhode” funk with an irresistible bass line and melody and when the clavinet break sets in it’s nothing but Good Times on the dance floor! A certain rewind for us and favorite track off this new EP.
On the flip we added two remixes from his previous high in demand tracks “On Top” and “And I Said”. Lorenz has been working a lot on various projects with his good friends Strip Steve and Tensnake and both had their go on these tracks from last year. Strip Steve took the parts of “On Top” and turned them into a deep Detroit flavored House Jam with stabby beats and beautiful strings added. Last but not least Tensnake fires up a high octane remix of “And I Said” that leans much towards old school New York house rhythms and the additional “Sax” topping gives it a groovy 90s feel to it. For sure bringing back that great happy and funky flow of the original.

The name Hugo Mari might not ring a bell just yet, but we’ve got a feeling this is about to change real soon. He’s released a handful of EP’s under his former alias Books on Omena and XVI including his own edit series on the latter label (check out his killer track ‘in the groove or his jazzy deep house collaboration with Zodiac called ‘Feel it in my Bones’). Considering he’s also remixed well known artists like afrobeat legend Dele Sosimi and grime master Trim, you might share our view of this amazingly talented and versatile producer. His “Change ur ways” EP for Heist is soulful, jazzy, deep and energetic with three varied originals and a classic soulful house remix by man of the moment, NDATL label head Kai Alcé.
“Get Loose” features the silky-smooth vocals of Zodiac, some lovely solo work on the Rhodes and a ‘free jazz’ vibe on the horns. There’s a constant funk bassline looping throughout the track to keep the energy going while the loose arrangement as well as the drum programming give the track that care-free feeling of a never-ending live jam. With that, “Get Loose” is a great club track that crosses the boundaries between funk, jazz and house.
The title track still has that jazzy feeling but moves towards a quirkier territory with some ‘Frits Wentink’ style harmonization, detuned piano’s and loosely chopped samples. There’s a definite gospel feel to the track, thanks to the choice in vocal chops, which is complemented perfectly by a filtered disco bassline. The percussion layer and rhythmic elements are full of energy without ever crossing the line where of subtlety that makes this track so catchy.
On the flip, there’s “Feel ur senses”, the most straightforward deep house track of the release, that gets its mood from an ongoing tremolo on the Rhodes pads. Space bleeps, bells, a hidden arp and ‘reverbed-out’ hits give the track an almost balaeric sound that will certainly put a smile on your face.
The B side is complemented with a vocal and instrumental remix of “Get Loose” by Kai Alcé, who has been throwing out one killer tune after the other, remixing Volcov’s Isoul8 project (one of our favorites of the year), as well as kicking out releases on his own NDATL label. Kai goes for a full-on soulful house vibe, giving his own chord progression center stage along with a set of rimshots. He chooses to leave the horns out, and instead work the vocal, Rhodes, and cowbells from the original to great effect, adding a little solo work of his own on a bell-like piano where he freestyles happily throughout the track and copies the vocal for added harmonies.
The instrumental version is perfect for those moments where you’re done with all the vocals and just want a tight soulful groove.
We couldn’t be happier with this release so play it loud and get loose!

DJ Jazzy Jeff releases M3, the finale of his Magnificent series. More than a decade after the earlier installments (The Magnificent, 2002 and The Return of the Magnificent, 2007), M3 is Jeff's first studio album to be released as an independent artist.
With M3, DJ Jazzy Jeff celebrates unhindered creativity. He enlists world-class musicians from his PLAYLIST artist network, Daniel Crawford, Kaidi Tatham, and Philadelphia collective Killiam Shakespeare, to set the tone from this highly anticipated project. It’s got proper house with „never leave“, a track that features the beautiful voice of Janine Small. It’s got rough deepness with „rhodes to nowhere“. It’s got a bit of beat madness with „confession beat“. And it’s got sublime, fragile electronics with „glacier“. We love that!

In The Dust Of Idols is an album exploring mortality, existentialism & the dread one can feel in the face of an apparently meaningless world. The journey you embark on when trying to create meaning where there is perhaps none. These initial senses of dread can be brought about by the insignificance you feel in the face of greatness, where others have seemingly found meaning and purpose in the face of your own wavering path. Other then these can be expressed in grandness and can become historically significant human feats, the fact that they have stood the test of time can become in itself overwhelming when reflecting on your own journey. Whilst these moments in time may hold no specific meaning to you – despite their impressive nature – you are driven into senseless awe.
In the Dust of Idols ties in this sense of wonderment coupled with the overarching dread you feel as you contemplate your own existence, where you fit into the significance of society and as Ruth Tallman quotes “ the search for answers in an answerless world”.
“I wanted to create something dense & heavy. When you listen through, it makes you feel like it has the weight of time stitched into it” explains Ives. As well as expanding the range of instrumentation used on this,his second album, Ives also enlisted the talents of Cellist Charlote de Burgh-Holder and experimentalist Joe Summers on the tracks “The Unread Library” and “Twisted Necks” which further adds to the dynamic depth and range on this record
Clarity was not my main objective, like an old piece of furniture covered in dust, you can tell what it is but the details are obscured, my ambition was to create a dense sonic backdrop, a representation of the confusion and insecurities we all can feel when questioning our existence – you know there should be answers but you can’t quite make out what they are”. It’s not all dark though and moments of optimism and cracks of light pepper the record giving enough hope to the listener to pursue questioning the unanswerable
Accompanying the release of the record is a short-film set to music from the album, produced and shot by photographer & director Lucie Rox.The film is a visual expression and representation of identity and the many ways this is challenged, perceived and adopted. Whilst taking forward the concepts explored throughout the album, the film looks to reduce the great vastness of confusion and self-doubt put forward on the record & focusing instead on a more intimate and personal perspective laid bare and shared by both director Lucie Rox & Specimens
with a heavy focus on race & heritage of which both Specimens & Lucie are mixed – Caribbean & British/African & French respectively – the objective of the film is to show one of the many angles where an individual's search for meaning & identity can be expressed.
‘In The Dust Of Idols’ is released on November 30th 2018 as an international collaboration between SVS Records and First Terrace Records. Pressed on beautiful white & blue splattered vinyl with artwork from Australian painter Kieran Ingram and mastered by the legendary Lawrence English

The ‘Vista’ EP caps off an intensely busy year for Geoff Kirkwood, otherwise known as Man Power. The British DJ/producer has become quite the ‘tour de force’ in 2018, with releases and remixes for Futureboogie, DFA, Correspondant, Exotic Series, Skint Records, and his very own Me Me Me imprint. So it seems quite fitting to seal a productive 12 months with a release on Richy Ahmed’s Four Thirty Two, a label that itself has been firing out big releases this year from EJECA, Jansons & Senzala and Ahmed himself. And joining this big end of year party, enter stage left, Roman Flu¨gel, who delivers an absolutely stellar remix of ‘Vista’. Meaty synths and clattering 909 drums are doused in futuristic Italo disco vibes for ‘Outrider’, whilst a winning combo of breakbeats and acid affected bass provide the backbone of the simply gargantuan ‘Vista’. Roman Flu¨gel’s interpretation of the title track brings the break to the fore, playfully teasing out the acidic sounds and surging strings for another truly memorable remix that we’ve come to expect from Mr. Flu¨gel. Closing the EP, ‘Poly Pop’ delivers a vivid and bright burst of melody over clanking percussion and sturdy beats, filled with ‘end of the night’ optimism that’s become Man Power’s forte.

After heading up the first three releases of his Akoya Circles label, Look Like brings a brand new name into the fold.
On the Motorsport EP, new Swiss/ Serbian talent Parco Palaz takes familiar club sounds and reanimates them through his own prism of rhythm and sound design, presenting an unconventional and sophisticated debut release. The tracks show a mouth-watering combination of heady textures and impulsive movement that mark the young producer as one to watch for the future.

'Use Your imagination' by 'blue-eyed' Funky rock combo Kokomo is a deep cut from the pre-Disco era of 1975. A time when uptempo R&B and Rock records like this were de rigueur with DJ's and dancers on the dancefloor's of clubs across NYC and all major cities where 'proper' dance music was appreciated and taken seriously. The years leading up to the Disco boom blessed us with some fantastic records like this that carried over into that late 70's era, 'classics' that still got love from the DJ's and were sequenced alongside the hits and anthems of the day. Featuring members of Joe Cocker's Grease Band, Kokomo had a few hits and were widely known, 'Use Your imagination' though, was their nightclub classic, a breezy, jazzy and funky jam that rolls just right and is incredibly rare and sought after on promo 12". Backed here with an exclusive unreleased edit on the flip you know this is an essential if you're a true Disco-head! This repress of the original Columbia promo from 1975 is backed with a brand new re-edit from one of NYC's Disco kings - Mr.K aka Danny Krivit. With almost half a century spent behind the turntables in NYC and beyond he surely understands records like 'Use Your Imagination' intrinsically, he was, after all, there when it all happened!

Many know Luther Davis from his more familiar and previously reissued disco floater 'You Can Be A Star', not so many people outside the collector's world know the disco-funk 45 'Keep on Dancin' as its about 4x as rare and slightly more out there musically (which is a good thing). The horn and guitar led disco funk hook float's almost precisely between Modern Soul and Deepfunk (The scene that played it first) and for a change i love the guitar solo, used almost like a synth effect. On the flip is an admittedly formulaic deep soul joint that just works due to the dope backing vocals and crispy drumming.

Produced by Big Shot records mastermind Nick Fiorucci and Michael Ova this 4 tracker mines a more Electro / Freestyle centric sound that glides effortlessly. Cool, sleek, bass-heavy and immaculately programmed and mixed, the EP is an essential for lovers of analogous grooves, bass and timeless machine-funk. For example, EP opener 'Wind It Up' does exactly what it says, metronomic, clicking drum machines lead us into some epic synth breaks and a tense, sparse mood... a dramatic build-up that eventually crescendos into a deep, futuristic bassline, beautifully mixed and produced this sonic high-quality feeling is evident across the whole record, from the downtempo blissed-out Hip-Hop beats of 'More More More', to the dystopian Electro grooves of 'Don't Look Back' and 'Drive It Home' the whole record is totally heavyweight in every way. Original copies of this 1990 masterpiece are very very hard to come by with second hand copies changing hands for tidy sums when available.

German production maestro, Butch, joins the Crosstown Rebels family this winter with his remix package for the enigmatic Tuvaband. Recalling the first time he heard the track, Butch says; “I loved the hypnotic vocals and started using it in my sets, mixing it into other tracks to make it work in clubs”. He hopes that this electronic version will make the record “accessible to a whole new crowd”. The original cut of Trees is a beautifully, melancholic number with Tuva’s enchanting vocals dancing across the guitar-led track. On his take on the song, Butch adds dark electronic elements, glitchy components and a heady bass, whilst still retaining a euphoric feel that will work perfectly on the floor. Butch’s illustrious career is proof that the German-producer does not shy away from hard work and it’s one that has seen him awarded the accolade of Best Producer two years in a row from Groove Magazine. He’s worked alongside heavyweights including Ricardo Villalobos and has released on acclaimed labels such as Moon Harbour, Saved, Rebirth and Watergate. Tuvaband originally began life as a duo, but is now the solo project of Norwegian songstress Tuva Hellum Marschhäuser. Tuva, whose music has drawn comparisons to the great Bon Iver, writes, produces and records all of her own material and has received support from BBC Radio 1 and The Independent as well as being a regular on the festival circuit.

Cold Beat is a San Francisco-based quartet fronted by Hannah Lew (synths, vocals) with Kyle King (synths, guitar), Luciano Talpini Aita (synths) and Sean Monaghan (guitar). Formed in 2013 the band has released three albums and two EPs. 'A Simple Reflection' is a 7-song collection of Eurythmics covers, yet feels just as personal as any of their original material. While digging through a collection of 12?s for her record shop Contact Records, Lew stumbled across the earliest Eurythmics B-sides and was floored. This lead to the discovery of their debut album 'In The Garden'. Annie Lennox's abstract and poetic lyrics really struck a chord with Hannah. What had started out as a single cover quickly snowballed into a full blown obsession. The synth and drum programming resonated with her songwriting process, so reimagining them was very creatively fulfilling. The covers on this EP are simultaneously dynamic and atmospheric post-punk that plays to Lew's ethereal vocals and King's crystalline guitar. All songs have been mixed by Mikey Young (Total Control) and mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. The record is housed in a jacket designed by Eloise Leigh, which features pink and purple clouds that evoke a dreamy softness and DIY playfulness and photos Lew in her best Lennox-inspired drag. Each copy includes a postcard with photos and notes. Further expeditions into spacey and celestial techno can be found on Blue Veil’s second EP for Dichotomy Records. Danny Clancy’s new project assembles four measured and characteristic tracks on the “Natural Boundary” EP, all wrapped up in Dichotomy’s bespoke design aesthetic on the 12” vinyl. “Three Horsemen Of The Apocalypse” offers a beautiful contrast of dark and light via a heady, acidic techno flavour against ethereal vocals, and “Broken Pieces” delivers delicate electronica bathed in glorious melody. The atmosphere remains celestial throughout “Measure Of Time”, with driving toms marching through a blanket of deep, melancholic synths, whilst “Light Mask” signs off the EP with a rhythmic and percussive workout that teases with its blissful tones.

FRAK are back on track with this dreamy album with deep dark hypnotic slow rhythmic tracks. This is experimental analog and haunting dancemusic at slow BPMs which gives you a glimpse of swedish smalltown dystopia in all its glory. The A1 track might give the impression that this is a romantic record and the A side in general will make big city people feel the urge to move to small towns again, but on the B-side it just gets darker and weirder (the smalltown kinda reveals its ugly underbelly) and it all ends with a track that would make the taped nipples fake fetishists in techno city shiver. I could say you need a mask to play this out, but lets not take it that far. For old fans of FRAK this record both delivers (A-side) and challenges (B-side). Me, I want doubles. -Joakim Cosmo

The California-born, London-based producer Rrose is well known for taking dancefloor techno into the uncharted depths of experimentalism and psychedelia while also paying homage to artists of the 20th century avant-garde such as Marcel Duchamp, James Tenney, and Eliane Radigue.
Beware of Shells" (the first solo Rrose release of 2018) is a diverse five track EP that goes to extremes of both aggression and tranquility while remaining strangely cohesive. The EP opens with machine gun bass drums that slowly disintegrate into a swirl of undulating tones and ghostly resonances. Next comes "Incisors" - the most solidly dancefloor track of the EP - which establishes a primal, skeletal rhythmic base upon which snake-like analog synth lines interweave in unpredictable ways. "The Swelling" follows with a short, sparse study in feedback, bent into uneasy melodic patterns. Side B opens with a previously unreleased 2013 remix of the Los Angeles band Deathday, and is perhaps Rrose's most overtly "industrial" track to date, with buzzing, dissonant synth tones that sound somewhere between a foghorn and a distorted guitar. The EP finishes on a contemplative note with "Pecking Order," a microtonal, ritualistic affair conjuring the spirit of Wendy Carlos's little-known masterpiece "Beauty in the Beast."

Eglo Records are proud to present the second official solo album by the forward facing producer and vocalist Steve Spacek. The album, entitled 'Natural Sci-Fi' originally began production in 2005, shortly after the release of the now classic 'Spaceshift' album (which included the J-Dilla collaboration 'Dollar'), but was never completed. Over the last few years Steve has added a some tweaks and changes - including a new song and guests vocalists Oddisee and Natalie Slade - eventually finalising the project and readying it for its release in 2018. The album continues the post Spaceshift vibration of Steve's signature production style and effortless vocal delivery. Swinging spaciuosly from past to present, packed with soul, sounding as fresh and relevant today as it did when it began back in 2005.

Jonny Rock is somewhat of a sorcerer, an omnipresent eye that gathers secret ingredients from far and wide—old school House oddities, hypnotic melodies of the Orient, the furthest reaches of Disco, the easy pace of Turkish psychedelic funk—fusing it all into his own shrouded code, a string of immaterial messages, both subliminal and lucid, that highlight his eccentric sense of storytelling and nuance. He imbues a sense of familiarity in his music, implying history that might not be studied but still feels learned, a quality inherent to productions born from a vast catalog of influence (and the inseparable sample material). Jonny conjures euphoric acid flashbacks, herds of crowds through Istanbul alleys, the misty morning residue from raves of yore, orchestral winds blown across the Aegean riviera, and he manages to concentrate their essence into singular details such as a snare drum. Both sides of his eternally-awaited ESP debut lean toward his dark arts—'Tye Die Techno' drives a relentless hard-edged drum kit that could throw an otherwise self-respecting Goth into a heated breakdance battle, while the title track and theme, 'Ode To A Happening On Earth,' plays with the imagery of ritual, fantasy and role-playing—but throughout this malevolent stew, there is a sustained hint of the artist’s playful nature. No matter how murky the trip becomes, Jonny is always there, a light at the end of the tunnel, with a big hug to reassure that everyone will be OK. He is one clever bastard—if you know, you know.

Fina’s next release comes from Mathew Ferness, an exciting and already hotly tipped rising star for just his second ever EP. It features three tracks that showcase his musical house style with a remix from Helsinki’s Saine. Ferness hails from a small town near Montreal in Quebec, where he was an outcast obsessed with music. With no access to record shops, parties or scenes Mathew started taking matters into his own hands DJing in his teens taking inspiration from J Dilla, he soon began producing his own beats on a sampler and drum machine. An exploration of analogue sounds, DAWS and most recently electronic music have all lead him to the rich sound he has now. His last EP on Beat changers was championed by Rhythm Section International and Radio 1 tastemaker Bradley Zero and this latest EP is likely to prove just as popular. Pad laced opener ‘Escapade’ is a summery deep house jam with breezy acoustic guitar and warm, punchy drums of the sort to get any floor cutting loose. ‘Solitude’ is more paired back, with thoughtful piano keys laid over deep rolling drums. There is a musical romance and beauty to the synths that elevate this one above purely functional fodder, and then ‘At First Sight’ awakens your senses once more with broad synth smears and perfectly rough-edged drums which create pure deep house soul. Saine is a producer with a range that goes from hazy hip hop to dusty house on labels like Odd Socks, Andy Hart’s Voyage and this one before now. After his 2017 EP Mint, he returns with a remix that is bubbly and laden with colourful melodies and open-air house grooves.
This is EP full of rich house music that is for mind, body and soul.

Anton Klint hails from Sweden and likes to make music at night. In his first release for Hivern he shows once again his knack for producing highly amusing electronic dancing sounds. Both of his tracks in 'Lyckliga M?nniskor' are twisted, playful and hard to pin down, which gives them a unique freshness. The title track is a schizoid take on tribalistic house, in which playful percussion layers and nervous synth sequences provide the background to its menacing vocal sample. 'Djembe Unchained' is, as its title suggests, still heavy on the percussion, but these are generously processed through delays to build a spaced-out and dizzy atmosphere. The track gets the remix treatment by our long-time favourite Black Merlin, who sharpens the beat to invoke mystic forces and push 'Djembe Unchained' into slo-mo cosmic techno territories. The artwork is by Barcelona-based artist Xavier Marin.

“Slave” is a dark instrumental of Sparrow’s “The Slave” from 1963 by Bert Inniss National Recording Orchestra with backing vocals by March of Dimes Quartet. It was the first release on the National label, which would become Sparrow’s home from 1963 to 1967; Spicy, rhythmic, mournful, classic, full of emotions.

Thandi Zulu known as T.Z. Junior was a young girl from Soweto. She started her musical career with Peter Moticoe who produced "Love Games" with The Young Five on Heads label in 1984. Then, Peter Moticoe brought her to Phil Hollis at Dephon Entertainment who then teamed them up with Attie Van Wyk who was the producer for Yvonne Chaka Chaka at that time.
Phil Hollis started Dephon Promotion (Dephon Entertainment) in the late 70's and developed into the largest independent record company in South Africa. He describes himself as the only person who has been involved in recording of major hit songs in nearly all genres of music in all the languages in South Africa. Phil Hollis was involved in all aspects of the Entertainment industry from production of recordings, recording company, distribution, marketing and promotion, events management, staging major events and filming.
"Sugar My Love" and "Are You Ready for Love" were produced and arranged by Attie Van Wyk. “Back in the 80's I was a songwriter for a band called Ballyhoo when I got an offer from the Dephon Record Company to join them as a music producer. So I quit the band and joined them, producing records mainly for music targeted at the black market in those days,” he says. Between 1982 and 1992, Attie Van Wyk produced over 120 albums, including many for Yvonne Chaka Chaka.

Maceo Plex inaugurates his MPLX label with a two-tracker of his own material; as Mutant Romance solidifies the ethos of the imprint – a platform for future releases, solely from the man himself. Ever since his landmark debut album Life Index on Crosstown Rebels, the Barcelona-via-Miami artist has never wavered from the constant momentum – establishing his Ellum Audio imprint in 2011 as well as his Ellum Black imprint earlier this year, the artist already explored different avenues of techno, electro and whatever lied in the crevices in-between. However, with this first release on MPLX – Maceo Plex stretches his sonic identity even further with a double-dose of warm, wistful dancefloor bumpers that will last long after its first hearing. “Mutant Romance” starts things off with a groovy rhythm, pacing itself justly between a deluge of affable chord progressions, rightly leading to a breakdown that’s just as vibrant and virtuous as you’d expect from a peak-time surprise from the man himself. In the early 90’s Oscar G and Ralph Falcon AKA Murk unleashed a series of 12” singles that single-handedly put Miami on the House Music map. The Murk sound combined a deep, tribal drum-based rhythm track with strong house/R&B vocal performances, and it sounded like nothing that was out back then. While many other producers have tried to recreate the Murk Sound, nobody else has been able to match their distinctive sound sonic vibe. To this day these tracks still get played peak hour around the world. “If You Really Love Someone” released under Murk acronym Liberty City is one of the best known of these releases. It’s now been given a spectacular update by one of the world’s most respected, influential and talented House Music aficionado’s DJ T., who had combined the much loved old skool flavor of Murk’s original production with the updated groove of Sterac. The B-side features a remix by emerging UK talent Jynx. Released on the original Murk Records vinyl imprint.

The Connection Machine/Cray Emoticon is the multi-talented duo of Natasja Hagemeier and Jeroen Brandjes, who debuted on U-TRAX in 1993 with their instant classic and much sought after 'The Dreamtec Album' (catalogue no: 3 UTR UMM 1). They went on to create another epic release called 'The Black Hole EP' on U-TRAX (catalogue no: 5 UTR UMM 2), but not after they presented 'Bitflower', a true work of art on Planet E from Detroit. Later they released the CD album 'Painless' on Down Low Music and in more recent years two 12"s (shared with The Lost Trax) and an album on Tabernacle Records from the UK.
The title track is originally meant as a replacement for the original game music of level 9 of the 2nd episode (E2L9) of the computer game Doom. The artists thought the original score wasn't doing right to the intensity of the game and made their own apocalyptic soundtrack. 'Gnawing The Heart' already proved its usefulness on many a dancefloor, whilst 'Choice Chip' will satisfy the ultimate speed freaks amongst you. If you're not into drugs or mushrooms, 'I Wish My Zapper Was A Gun' can deliver you the same effects: it's a psychedelic space-acid trip, built around a sample of the sitcom 'Neighbours'.
You can't get wrong with this vintage and merciless dance floor material from the mid-nineties.

For the last 20 years London-based author and party organiser Tim Lawrence has dedicated himself to excavating the history of New York City party culture and bringing some of the most powerful aspects of that culture to London’s dance scene, from where it has ricocheted around the world. Having conducted the first set of major interviews with David Mancuso, Lawrence started to put on Loft-style Lucky Cloud Sound System parties with David and friends in London in June 2003. In early 2004 he published Love Saves the Day: A History of American Dance Music Culture, 1970-79, which tracked the influence of the Loft on the wider New York DJ, dance and disco scene. In 2009 his biography of the iconic musician Arthur Russell became the first book to map the wider downtown music scene. These beautifully written and politically insightful histories have educated, inspired and celebrated the previously overlooked foundations of contemporary dance music.
Lawrence’s most recent publication, Life & Death On The New York Dancefloor, 1980 – 1983, published in late 2016, shines a light on 'one of the most dynamic and creative periods in the history of New York City'. Falling between the more regularly celebrated sounds of disco, house and techno, the period produced a uniquely hybrid series of sounds that never acquired a settled name. This led them to be largely ignored by historians and even DJs, yet the power of the period’s music and the scenes it birthed, Lawrence argues, remains undeniable. Met with a rapturous response, Life and Death On The New York Dance Floor saw Lawrence on the road for most of the next year as he spread the word about the characters, the records, the clubs and the bands that shaped the post-Disco, post-Punk, and burgeoning Hip Hop landscapes of New York City during the early 1980s—a period when freedom still ruled.
This, the first of a 2-part sonic tribute to the 1980 – 1983 era as well as a musical companion piece to Life & Death On The New York Dance Floor sees recognised musicians (David Byrne of Talking Heads) nestle up alongside the belatedly recognised (Arthur Russell’s Dinosaur L and Loose Joints, and Suicide's Alan Vega) and the downright obscure (Gray, 2 Teens Kill 4 and Tuxedomoon). An indication of what’s to follow, Dinosaur L’s original album version of “Go Bang” has been dramatically overshadowed by the definitive François Kevorkian remix yet received regular play by David Mancuso and remains an enthralling experimental Arthur Russell jam.
Lovingly curated across 2 slabs of vinyl, the album introduces listeners to a stunning array of sounds, styles, vibes and feelings that encapsulate this most fertile and forward-thinking era, when music, fashion, sound system innovations, leaps in music technology, a DIY attitude and a freedom from corporate politics combined with extraordinary expressivity. All music contained within this album has been hand-picked and programmed by Tim Lawrence. It represents a selective yet rich introduction to one of the most extraordinary periods in New York City’s epic musical history.

Italian duo Subradeon team up with Radio Slave’s Rekids to deliver four illuminating cuts entitled ‘Walking Through Motown EP’. Beginning their musical journey in Southern Italy over a decade ago, the now Berlin-based duo Subradeon have been building steady momentum by releasing a handful of EPs on Detroit’s Motech Records, trau-ma and their own Subradeon Records label. Gradually honing their soulful productions with an emphasis on Detroit techno – the duo quickly caught the attention of Rekids label boss Radio Slave. They now join the reputable Berlin imprint with ‘Walking Through Motown EP’, closing the label’s 2018 to follow lauded releases from Sebo K, Markus Suckut, P.Leone, SRVD, Nocow, and many more accomplished names. ‘Walking Through Motown (Part 1)’ is an uplifting track with mesmerising leads and swirling synths combining to create ethereal atmospheres before ‘Walking Through Motown (Part 2) offers beautifully resonating kicks, undulating chord progression and melodious synth flutters. On the flip, ‘The Law Is Spiritual’ maintains the symphonious spectacle balancing inspiriting vocals, rattling percussion and a weighty bassline whilst ‘We Will Still Resist’ employs fluid drums, looping piano keys and euphoric elements to finish.

Santiago Niño is an accomplished eclectic & conceptual electronic musician originally from Bogota Columbia, but based in Buenos Aires, with a deep discography of releases across a range of genres. The Techgnosis EP follows his debut Hermetics track ‘Collider’ as which impressed on it’s release on R&S founder’s RV Trax imprint in early 2018. Created in a low point following the sale of his professional studio, with the humble means of a laptop, mixer and set of basic monitors the realisation of this music reaffirmed Santiago’s self belief that his talent extended beyond his need for gear. This EP follows in the same footsteps as ‘Collider’; mesmeric, pulsing techno with a rich musicality. Equally important to Santiago is his love of the visual arts: "This project has a really important connection with the audiovisual work, which i want to keep up, because i love cinema, i love the audiovisual arts, the abstract, experimental and poetic side of it, and thats why i always want to give that cinematic feel to my music. Hand picked by Renaat Vandepapeliere to step up from the RV Trax series to a full R&S EP this is just the start for the Hermetics project.

Tactics was launched in late 2017 by co-founders of the imprint Yard One with their 'Vol.2' EP, following on from the 'Vol.1' various artists EP released on the main imprint Tact Recordings back in 2012. Since its inception last year and it’s two releases so far from founders Yard One and Fletcher, the label has garnered the attention of DJ’s like Varhat, Roger Gerressen, Raresh, Malin Genie and Andrey Pushkarev to name a few. Here though we see the imprint welcome some of it’s favourite artists from over the year onto the roster, namely Echocord artist Jor-El aka Joel Alter, Ilian Tape’s Imumgem Orihasam and Smallville regular Benjamin Brunn. Leading on the package is Sweden’s Jor-El with 'Remember Tomorrow', a gritty dance floor workout fuelled by dusty drums, fluttering stab sequences and sweeping synth strings before Japanese producer Imugem Orihasam edges into dub territory with a cinematic two minute soundscape opening the composition before weighty drums, swirling pads and dubbed out metallic chimes dynamically unfold throughout.Hamburg’s Benjamin Brunn then closes the package with 'ResoPlanet', as always delivering smooth, understated electronic music via wandering ethereal pads, resonant bleeps and bumpy, off-kilter 808 drums.

Tartelet Records rounds out 2018 with ‘Minor Forms’ by Urulu, a bumping EP that winds up the label’s roster of ambitious releases to celebrate its tenth year in business. The California producer and DJ has made his mark this year with a string of standout releases on Kalahari Oyster Cult, Voyage Recordings and his own Amadeus imprint, showcasing his affection for euphoric nostalgia and tight grooves. Los Angeles DJ/Producer Jose Marquez’s sound is a result of being brought up around Afro-Latin, Caribbean and other World Music at a young age. Always intrigued by electronic sounds as well, Jose's mission has been to fuse his love of global rhythms with the dance floor. Ankabé delivers just that! The overall message of the song is about peace, ‘Ankabé’ means Unity in Sidy's native language of Bambara from Mali, West Africa. Sidy says “The song is saying…let’s all work together and bring the best in the world”. Ankabé starts off minimally and slowly builds, creating anticipation as the drums start to get louder whilst Sidy’s deep vocal intensifies to an inevitable climax that is sure to ignite any dance floor.
