Mount Kimbie’s fourth studio album, The Sunset Violent, is seeded in the wake of 2017’s Love What Survives and marks an important full circle moment for the group as they return to a band-like setup (Dominic Maker, Kai Campos, Andrea Balency-Béarn and Marc Pell).

The Sunset Violent was made under the empty sky of the American desert, where Kai and Dominic relocated to for a month. A town with little to offer but a couple of saloons, a basin with a history of alleged UFO sightings and a selection of local country radio stations ends up birthing a new Mount Kimbie record that harks back to a time where the guitar lead the way through the band’s sonic tapestry.

On The Sunset Violent, an album that marks fifteen years of Mount Kimbie, it’s clear that their creative spark is by no means at an end.

MK 3.5: Die Cuts | City Planning shows how Dom Maker and Kai Campos have grown over the past decade, and demonstrates the two sides of Mount Kimbie’s aesthetic coin - each side produced entirely by either member. Dom’s side, Die Cuts, is colourful and melody-led, thriving on the spark of collaboration; Kai’s, City Planning, is tactile and unpredictable, the product of a deeply personal aesthetic voyage. The two sides complement each other through their contrasts. But in other ways they’re not so different. Both artists present a unique vision which stands apart from their peers; neither side could have been made by anyone but Mount Kimbie.

Die Cuts, produced by Dom, was inspired by his move to LA half a decade ago, around the same time as the band’s old friend and collaborator James Blake. The pair began doing production sessions with a series of increasingly big names from the world of rap and hip-hop, including Jay-Z, Travis Scott, ASAP Rocky, SZA, and Rosalia, among many others. Dom’s collaborative work is going from strength to strength, hitting a recent high with his and James’ headturning work on Slowthai’s ‘Feel Away’.

Die Cuts is a reflection of this nascent community and Dom’s producerly vision. Skipping between hip-hop, RnB, and electronic pop, the album combines high class songcraft with a delicate leftfield touch, and showcases a cast of vocalists including longtime friends James Blake and Slowthai, alongside new collaborators Danny Brown, Reggie, Nomi, Keiyaa, Wiki, Liv.e, Kucka and Choker.
Kai’s side began after the duo’s finest record yet, 2017’s Love What Survives, led to a period of extensive touring. Back home, he was hungry for a change of pace. He found it in DJing, which offered a new kind of performance - unplannable, unpredictable, and thrilling. He has since become a seasoned DJ, clocking in at the finest festivals (Field Day, Dekmantel, Melt) and clubs (Printworks, Fabric, Sub Club, Concrete) and recording numerous mixes, including a slick DJ-Kicks mix in 2018. Following this, he embarked on a project of "intense listening and thinking about listening,” immersing himself in new sounds and music-making approaches.

The outcome of this creative journey is City Planning. Wild, warped and loopy, the album twists avant-garde signifiers from on and off the dancefloor into a deft and refined statement. Its sleek beats and stuttering arpeggios are caked with scuzz and personality, making for an album that’s warm and inviting even at its most confrontational.

They also share the news that for the first time ever, acclaimed photographers/directors and longtime collaborators, Tyrone Lebon & Frank Lebon are working together with Mount Kimbie alongside legendary US visual artist and sculptor Tom Shannon to create a multi-format creative campaign.

Hotflush Recordings presents a brand new production duo that eludes classification: Mount Kimbie. Based in London, they have developed a truly unique sound whose experimental rhythms lend themselves to the fringes of dubstep, wonky and hip hop, but ooze with emotion and echoing ambient soundscapes that take the listener to an entirely different place. In 2010, Mount Kimbie released their debut album, Crooks & Lovers, to widespread acclaim. Perfectly capturing the heady atmosphere of the moment, the album melded the wide-eyed mentality of what had become known as ‘Post-Dubstep’ with an open-minded musical sensibility that produced an instant classic. Ten years later, the album is reissued on Hotflush with a bonus disc of the band’s first ever release. Dom and Kai met whilst at Southbank University, pushed together in a student halls that was previously a mental asylum – where the ceilings were still ridiculously high to stop patients hanging themselves: “a cold, joyless, concrete building – the sort of building where you’d drop a pen and the sound would just go on and on in an echo.” Armed with found sound snips and a siege mentality, on Crooks & Lovers Kai and Dom set about turning London’s ambience into rhythm, its chaos into coherence. Traces of influence remained – the hard-earned spaces of Burial and The Bug vie with the berserk melodrama of Xiu Xiu and Grouper’s sad-eyed glow, D’Angelo’s pervert soul was cleansed in the intimacy of Phil Elvrum’s Microphones, Angelo Badalamenti’s swollen ‘Twin Peaks’ atmospheres found a cradle in Madlib’s lax lope. Sceneless and untethered from etiquette and genre codes, "Crooks & Lovers" floats through dubstep and hip-hop, jazz, techno and ambient, post-rock, UK garage and film scores to startling effect. On this special vinyl edition, the first ever Mount Kimbie transmission, the Maybes EP, is included. Originally released on Hotflush in February 2009 and out of print on vinyl for many years, it’s a crucial snapshot of the band developing their sound.

Originally released in 1993, Surfing On Sine Waves is the second album released under the Warp Artificial Intelligence series (the series also includes the two titular compilations, as well as contributions by Autechre, The Black Dog, F.U.S.E. and more).

Surfing On Sine Waves is also the sole album released under Richard D. James’ (aka Aphex Twin’s) Polygon Window alias. The name “Polygon Window” originally appeared as a track name under Richard D. James’ other pseudonym The Dice Man, as the track title for his submission on Artificial Intelligence. Surfing On Sine Waves was chosen as a title by Rob Mitchell based on a quote by Richard D. James. The album debuted at #2 on the UK dance charts. The album was followed the same year with a companion EP titled Quoth. The EP’s title track originally appeared on the album, accompanied by additional songs who first appeared on this release.

Fast forward 32 years to 2025, Surfing On Sine Waves (Expanded Edition) sees the pair of companion releases as a single entity, out on vinyl and CD.

Incunabula, the debut full-length offering from Autechre finally made available again on vinyl, having been out of print on vinyl since 2001. Having first emerged onto a post-acid house 1993, Incunabula was released as part 7 of the now legendary Artificial Intelligence series of albums and compilations from Warp. A series that gave us early records from artists who went on to sculpt the electronic landscape both in and out of the club. Being lined up against such contemporaries as Black Dog Productions (Balil and Plaid) Aphex under his Polygon Window guise, Richie Hawtin's FUSE project, Speedy J, B12 & on the series' closing compilation, artists as diverse as Seefeel, Richard H Kirk & The Higher Intelligence Agency. Incunabula set the tone for the following landmark albums from Ae, huge caustic dissections of sound that almost resemble vast mathematical equations more than they do club fodder (though tracks like the breakbeat whip crack of Doctrine and the acidic euphoria of Maetl, which when deployed by the right DJ will go off). 1993 debut album by the trio of Andrew Weatherall, Jagz Kooner and Gary Burns. Unavailable on vinyl and CD since original release. Remastered from the original tapes by Matt Colton, contains “Smokebelch II (Beatless Mix)” for the first time on the 2LP edition.

Coming off the back of his work on the era-defining Screamadelica album by Primal Scream, not to mention groundbreaking remix work for the likes of New Order, My Bloody Valentine and the Happy Mondays, Weatherall was as revered by fans of indie guitar music as he was namechecked by hardcore ravers. The increasing demands on his services led to a studio partnership with Kooner and Burns, forming the production trio The Sabres Of Paradise (named after a 1960 book about a Muslim chieftain’s efforts to repel a Russian invasion).

The opening track on Sabresonic (named after the popular weekly club night Weatherall was then running) started life as a remix of the Primal Scream track “Don’t Fight It Feel It” but got so radically mutated that it turned into something entirely new. As well as reflecting on contemporary trends in dance music (“Inter-Legen-Ten-ko” is a swipe at the IDM genre name), the album also brought in older influences - “R.S.D” is an acronym for “Red Stripe Dub”, the deep influence of King Tubby et al evident at various points throughout the album, whilst the epic icy vistas of the 14 minute+ “Clock Factory” are informed by the electronic experiments of industrial groups such as Coil. The album also flagged future trends in electronic music, with the timeless “Smokebelch II (Beatless Mix)”, a beautiful re-work of an old Chicago house tune by Lamont Booker, becoming a staple of chillout compilation CDs for the rest of the decade.

1994 second album by the trio of Andrew Weatherall, Jagz Kooner and Gary Burns, unavailable on vinyl and CD since original release. A concept album with accompanying text for each track by James Woodbourne, it also includes additional production by Portishead and Mr Scruff. Remastered from the original tapes by Matt Colton, contains “Theme” for the first time on the 2LP edition.

By the time this record came out towards the end of ‘94, The Sabres Of Paradise had evolved from a production trio into a fully fledged band, embarking on live tours and augmented for the stage by additional members such as Rich Thair, from Warp labelmates Red Snapper, and Phil Mossman, later to join LCD Soundsystem. Tapped by Noel Gallagher to support Oasis at enormodomes, the group opted instead to play clubs, student unions, and infamously, a car park in Central London. Their tour adverts contained small print specifying a policy of “no jugglers, no fire eaters, no flutes and no hippies with lawyers”.

The studio sound had shifted radically as well, utilising samples (notably on the 1930s voodoo jazz inflected “Wilmot”), live instrumentation (the heavy twang guitar riff of “Tow Truck”) and a deep love of film scores audible throughout, from the block party funk of “Theme” to the noir-ish soundscapes of the title track. The sense of the album being a soundtrack itself is underpinned by the accompanying text for each track, rumoured to have been penned by Weatherall himself under a pseudonym, each text fragment joining up to form a suitably grimy, low-lit short story. The Guardian later summed up Haunted Dancehall as “techno’s first concept album”.

Following the release of his new collaborative album Tall Tales with Thom Yorke, a 2LP vinyl repress of Mark Pritchard’s previous solo album Under The Sun will be available on 25 July via Warp Records.

Originally released in 2016, Under The Sun is one story told in chapters and, as with any good story, the spell is only maintained if you don't skip to the end. Pritchard, as usual, defies easy categorisation and that is what gives depth and nuance to this work. He draws on the sounds and influences genetically coded in his musical DNA; ambient, nu-wave, avant-garde electronics and folk; but reimagines them through an otherworldly filter that cements Under The Sun somewhere in the future, rather than the past.

The album features contributions from peers and friends including Thom Yorke, Linda Perhacs, Bibio, and Beans, and explores themes of beauty, desolation, and longing for home.

An album beloved by fans since its release in March 2004, Ultravisitor is one of the most popular records in Squarepusher’s entire discography. Following last year’s 20th-anniversary expanded deluxe reissue, the standalone remastered edition is now widely available. Carefully remastered from the original tapes by Jason Mitchell at Loud Mastering and overseen by Tom Jenkinson - who was never entirely happy with the original release - this edition brings fresh dynamics and details in the tracks.
