Washington DC singer Kelela has always sounded most interesting when there's friction in the machinery, and this record keeps finding new ways to rough up her usual futurist r&b palette. 'Point Blank' opens with clipped drums and queasy synth pulses that never settle properly, while 'Goin Down' drags distorted bass through the mix until the whole thing starts sounding pleasantly overheated. AK Paul turns 'Outta Time' into a twitchy, metallic thing full of collapsing rhythm patterns and cold synth stabs. Later on, 'Don't Piss Me Off' strips everything back to pounding percussion and pure irritation, before 'The Bridge' briefly softens the mood with PinkPantheress floating through the track like something half disappearing into radio static.

Writing for The Quietus back in 2014, Ed Gillett commented: "It's no hyperbole to say that Clark's 2006 LP Body Riddle is one of electronic music's unheralded masterpieces, its layers of heat-warped melodies, flickering textures and muscular drumming (played by Clark himself) creating a beautiful and unstable mixture of violence and wistfulness. Its production is immaculate, almost inhumanly so, swaddling the listener in midrange before pummelling them viciously, shifting seamlessly between organic instruments and impossible, vertiginous sound design."

Cry Sugar’ is Hudson Mohawke’s third album and deepens his practice of producing motivational music for club goers—uplifting the debauchery and inspiring many through his own brand of anthemic maximalism.

Trading in his lineage in dark UK back-alleys filled with Glaswegian antipathy for studio sessions with blazed Pavarotti-inspired tenors and drunk string quartets, Mohawke has dialed in an ongoing fascination with melding high and low culture. After all, he is indeed the architect for the high peaks of high-definition trap production that became embellished in the 2010s—a style that has been appropriated in everything from beer can littered college parties to Arbys commercials. Instead of sneering at the “red solo cup” nihilism of his legacy, Mohawke seems to relish in the uncanny freedom such depravity affords.

American decadence, then, becomes a stage for his music to thrive—where the DJ booth becomes a composer’s podium for him to conduct the tense drama between debauchery and apocalypse, the “mise-en-scene” of club culture in 2022.

‘Multiverse’ is a word used to describe an infinite group of disparate universes including the ones currently inhabited by humans. A myriad of realms that sit side by side, undetected by our senses, surround us at any given moment. The multiverse theory was first confirmed by tracking leakage of electromagnetic waves filtering from one dimension into the next. When these waves were transposed to fit into frequencies audible by the human ear, the recordings were studied by a team of scientists, who found that they contained rhythmic elements that resembled a speech pattern of an alien language.

After years of research and manipulation the audio was found to be a looping recording of an alien voice speaking the words: ‘IDWT005; coming soon to a universe near you.’
