It's been a long time since a new Morgan Geist solo release on Environ, and we've got one in store for you next month. To hold you over, Environ presents RAREMIX, a collection of rare and unreleased Morgan Geist remixes! First up is Daniel Wang "24 to Vector Z (Morgan Geist's Commuter Mix)." The Commuter Mix is off Daniel Wang's debut Environ 12", The Mechanical Birds EP, released via a UK P&D back in 1998. A sought-after and rare Environ record, the remix takes the spacy original and reigns it into a tight, Moroder-esque robodisco workout sure to rock your floor. Next is Owusu & Hannibal "Delirium (Morgan Geist Unreleased Dub)." Geist is a major fan (and friend) of Owusu & Hannibal, whose album comes out on Ubiquity later in 2006. The duo invited him to remix their debut track "Delirium" for a Ubiquity 12" late in 2005, and Geist agreed, provided he could keep an unreleased dub to release on Environ. Here it is, lavishly adorned in tight 808 sequences and moody Detroit chords... A flip to the B-side brings us to Reflection "Cube Loop (Morgan Geist's Modest Science Mix)" - a bouncy treat from 1997, originally released on the highly-collectable and long defunct Clear Recordings label. Reflection are a pair of Japanese brothers who were far ahead of their time, hand-chopping beats and phrases with ReCycle-like precision and reassembling them with refreshingly little regard for traditional song structure and melody. "Cube Loop" was one of the more straightforward tunes from their debut and here Mr. Geist remixes it with a subtle classic house touch. Finally, the record closes with CiM "Typical (Morgan Geist Remix)." Taking a cue from the darker Carl Craig remixes he admired at the time and racking it onto a jacking 909/808 framework, Geist left little reminder of the nearly ambient original track. The remix was released in limited quantity on the Headspace UK label in early 1998 and was quite difficult to find until now. More
