Duper, the new release from Morgan Geist, is a not-so-subtle callback to his 2001 EP, Super. "I was working most days with Kelley Polar on our new vocal project, Au Suisse, which isn't really dance music at all," he explains. "I started fooling around with these instrumental tracks at night for fun. Each track was in a different style, but they seemed to work nicely as a group. By the time I asked Kelley to contribute strings to the A-side, the record really started feeling like the sequel to Super."

Super Duper ­- get it?

Indeed, the playful synth riffs and sweeping disco strings of "Twilight Express" echo the palette of Geist's cult classic "24K" and early Metro Area. "Black Test Car" is a unique collision of minimal, almost Krautrock-style drums, sound library textures and spacy electro percussion. Meanwhile, "Feeling Is Mutual" is a rare acid outing that pushes beyond the usual comfort zone, the 303 acting more as feather than hammer on top of major-key modulations. "I love a lot of Aphex Twin and I love sweet, "quiet storm"-style R&B," says Geist. "I figured, why not?"

San Serac has been bringing his blood house and wrong boogie funk to the clubs for a minute now. In the last few years he has toured extensively with Junior Boys, Wilderness and Shout Out Out Out Out, and his kinetic live show has disrupted every kind of venue including noted parties like Horse Meat Disco, Wierd and P.S.1 Warm Up in NYC. His self-released Professional album garnered many kind words from the underground, and his acclaimed Stereo Image project (with ex-Junior Boy Johnny Dark) made The Wire's top albums of 2008. After meeting Morgan Geist on tour the two got to talking, and the rest, as they say, is history. "Music Never Ends" is San Serac's first record for Environ, and it will burn a club hole in your soul with its catchy lyrics and no wave hip house style. Also on the A side is "Night Work," a manic depressive boogie track relaxing somewhere between the 80s funk of Aurra and the soul insanity of Station To Station. The B side is a remix of "Music Never Ends" by Morgan Geist himself, a stripped down classic techno jammer guaranteed to rock the crowd. San Serac is currently planning live dates for the fall, recording the follow up to Professional and wrapping up an album written and recorded with French house star Para One. REPRESS!!!!!!DETROIT is the first single from Double Night Time, the upcoming album from Morgan Geist and his first solo artist album in over a decade. It features two epic, gorgeous remixes from Grammy-nominated remixer Carl Craig and features vocals from Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys. After turning the dance music world on its head with his Metro Area project (alongside collaborator Darshan Jesrani) and mining rare disco gems with the seminal obscure disco DJ mix Unclassics (2004), Geist decided it was time to turn his attention to a solo album. “Detroit” is the lead song from the album and (as careful listeners may discern) is based loosely on “24K,” Geist’s cult classic track from 2001 (taken from the SUPER EP and recently covered by The Whitest Boy
Alive for their performances, a 7” release and almost 400,000 downloads from their mySpace page). The new, wistful lyrics (further emphasized by Greenspan’s evocative delivery) and melancholy feel (an ode, certainly, to the electronic music of Detroit itself) create a potent combination when contrasted against Geist’s meticulous production and trademark grooves. A native of the city for which the track is named, Carl Craig is a world-renowned remixer and was definitely the man for the job of tackling “Detroit.” Geist is a long-time Craig fan, and he knew the remixer was already adept at working with Greenspan’s vocals (it was Craig’s remix of Junior Boys “Like A Child” that received the Grammy nomination for Best Remix). After many revisions, Craig finally created two remixes that combined elements of all of his previous efforts. The “c2RMX1” remix is a full-on stormer in the classic C2 instrumental style (and featuring occasional MC’ing from the man himself!). The “c2RMX2” remix is just as devastating for the floor, but packs the emotional punch of retaining Greenspan’s vocals and Geist’s original chord progressions and melodies.

"Entropy Reigns" is the first single from Kelley Polar's highly-acclaimed new album I Need You to Hold On While the Sky Is Falling. Already a cult hit, the song is getting more and more radio play and charting each week. It was downloaded nearly 100,000 times in its week as iTunes' Discovery Download, and Pitchfork (in its glowing review of I Need You... on March 4, 2008) said "...the sumptuous, string-drenched boy-girl duet of 'Entropy Reigns (In the Celestial City)' is one of the best of the year so far."We knew "Entropy Reigns" needed an incredible remix, so it was a simple decision to enlist Ewan Pearson and Al Usher (who also operate under the name Partial Arts) to work their magic. He has programmed for Goldfrapp and Gwen Stefani and his production credits include albums for Tracey Thorn and The Rapture, as well as Ladytron, Chikinki and Jeb Loy Nichols, amongst others. Partial Arts is a highly-respected name in dance music with several fantastic EPs on Kompact, Out of the Loop and Battle, as well as remixes for labels including Rekids and Ministry of Sound. Not only did these two have a keen understanding of pop music, sweaty dancefloors and strings, but they were big fans of Kelley Polar - so they turned in two remixes instead of one! For the more house- and tech-driven floors, check the four-on-the-floor beauty of the "Pearson and Usher's Closed System Dub" (spread deep and loud across the A-side). For more electro- and pop-fuelled DJ sets, "Pearson and Usher's Second Law Dynamix" does the trick, complete with an insane acid breakdown. Another two years have passed since Metro Area last shook up the scene with a 12", and it is with great pleasure that Environ presents the latest outing from Morgan Geist & Darshan Jesrani: METRO AREA 7! This release finds Metro Area continuing on their quest for fresh sounds and timeless production, expanding the compositional palette while retaining the emotional spirit of their early influences. Metro Area have pushed themselves to once again make heartfelt, personal music that stands out from what the rest of the dance music pack is doing and the duo feel this EP is their strongest work since the release of their 2002 self-titled album. "Read My Mind" is the first full-on vocal track to actually be released by Metro Area (they had amassed a small catalog of unreleased vocal tracks since starting the project). Featuring the incredible pipes of Philip Owusu (of Ubiquity Records' Owusu & Hannibal), "Read My Mind" is a dynamic boogie romp full of contrast: sweet yet meloncholy, warm yet raw. Check out the new record from new Environ act BABY OLIVER! More hot and twisted tracks for disco jackers and neurotic nu-romantics...you don't want to miss it. Baby Oliver's debut "PRIMETIME/HYPOCHONDRIAC" was an underground smash hit, gaining noteriety in sets by the finest DJs from disco (Metro Area, Prins Thomas) to house/techno (praise from Carl Craig) and indie floors (Junior Boys, Optimo). And it's no wonder - like the best club music, Baby Oliver's jams slice across genre divides and sound like nothing else coming out! Like any music that makes one feel uncomfortable with its unfamiliarity, it was universally despised by teen clones on venues like iTunes while trendmaking DJs licensed it for their mix CDs (LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy among them). Baby Oliver's new jams expand on the territory he pioneered on his debut. "Feelings 2" sounds like an out-take from Prince on the day he forgot to take his meds, with the result cut and sliced by Ron Hardy and served up by the Hot Mix 5 on WMBX. Always unpredictable, Baby Oliver flips the usual male lyrical cliche and tells his lover, "You just give me sex when I need a love fix - and you know that's not the same." The B-side is a slow-building, dark epic called "Shot Caller" that juxtaposes the sounds of gunshots with the famous Linn Drum rim shot sound in a wry sonic pun. Sprinked with vocal garnishes rendered from memories of Depeche Mode and Art of Noise, "Shot Caller" is sure to drive your dancefloors wild...

"Chrysanthemum EP" is the first new recording from Kelley Polar since his hugely successful debut album released in 2005, "Love Songs of The Hanging Gardens." This EP continues his unique take on pop music and includes an extended and radical B-side rework (exclusive to this EP) for DJs and dancefloors. This EP precedes a brand-new album from Mr. Polar scheduled for Fall 2007. The seeds of "Chrysanthemum" are described by Mr. Polar himself as a confluence of the apocalyptic fear that permeated all Cold War childhoods, comic-book illustrations of blood and violence abstracted into flora and a B-grade science fiction novel's portraying two teens in the final throes of lovemaking as the world is destroyed in nuclear apocalypse. Yet despite this decidedly dark and unique approach, the song is nevertheless pure pop: catchy and indelible once heard. "Rosenband" is lighter in subject matter yet just as deep musically, filled with synthetic layers and rhythms that reveal themselves slowly on subsequent listens. Despite the immediacy of the melodies, there is a detail that permeates all of Kelley Polar's work and rewards the attentive listener. A completely reworked instrumental version of "Rosenband" is stretched across the B-side and is - dare we say it - a dancefloor killer, with a long, mix-friendly intro building to an incredible crescendo. The track is arranged and mixed by Morgan Geist and was done so with DJs in mind!

Summertime Green Vinyl!

For almost everyone, the entry point for discovering the music of Q Lazzarus came via “Goodbye Horses.” The song first appeared in 1988, via Jonathan Demme’s Married to the Mob, but it would not become fully lodged into popular consciousness until it infamously materialized again in Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs in 1991. “Goodbye Horses” felt like a self-contained universe – dreamlike and wholly unusual, an instant classic that left listeners captivated and curious about the mysterious voice behind it. That voice belonged to Diane Luckey, a uniquely talented artist whose music was ahead of its time and who would ultimately remain largely unrecognized in her lifetime.

In conjunction with the release of Aridjis Fuentes’ documentary film Goodbye Horses: The Many Lives of Q Lazzarus, Sacred Bones is releasing a collection of songs that span the entirety of Q’s career, showcasing the different eras of her work and the full breadth of her personality. Released in collaboration with the family of Q, it has the distinction of being her first and only full-length release.

Recorded between 1985 and 1995, this trove of previously unreleased music reflects some of the most interesting facets of pop music from the past four decades in a way that feels both savvy and wildly eclectic. The titular “Goodbye Horses” remains a singular piece of spooky new wave perfection and one might imagine an entire Q Lazzarus album coiled around this aesthetic, but much like singers such as Alison Moyet, Annie Lennox, or Lisa Gerrard, Q’s chameleonic voice could lend itself perfectly to a variety of styles and settings. Her cover of Talking Heads’ “Heaven” transforms the song into a full-throated power ballad complete with tinkly piano flourishes, while her take on Gershwin’s “Summertime” sounds like the kind of dubby club redux that could have been a perfect companion to anything from Nightclubbing-era Grace Jones. Tracks like “My Mistake” and “Hellfire” flirt with house music and showcase just how brassy and belty Q’s voice could be when she really let loose, while “Don’t Let Go” sounds like the kind of bombastic radio single Cher might have released several decades ago. Elsewhere, songs like “Bang Bang” and “I See Your Eyes” espouse the kind of guitar-driven alt-rock sensibilities that, in a parallel universe, could have made them staples on 120 Minutes.

Goodbye Horses represents the potential for so many different kinds of careers that, for whatever reason, never fully materialized. That we now have these songs in the world, and a clearer picture of the person behind them, is nothing short of a blessing.

They don’t get much more anthemic than Idris Muhammad’s ‘Could Heaven Ever Be Like This’ and who better to rework it than edit royalty, Late Nite Tuff Guy. Subtle in his touches yet incorporating a more DJ friendly, dancefloor orientated beat and tension building intro which teases elements of this classic before that instantly recognizable bass riff and staccato guitar chords come into play. That subtlety is key when it comes to handling a record as epic as this, elements are accentuated and looped, delicate effects are woven in but the soul and feeling of Idris’ music is lovingly maintained by LNTG. And for the purists out there, the flip houses the original mix so you’ve got two paths to heaven to choose from.
