Another two years have passed since Metro Area last shook up the scene with a 12", and it is with great pleasure that Environ presents the latest outing from Morgan Geist & Darshan Jesrani: METRO AREA 7! This release finds Metro Area continuing on their quest for fresh sounds and timeless production, expanding the compositional palette while retaining the emotional spirit of their early influences. Metro Area have pushed themselves to once again make heartfelt, personal music that stands out from what the rest of the dance music pack is doing and the duo feel this EP is their strongest work since the release of their 2002 self-titled album. "Read My Mind" is the first full-on vocal track to actually be released by Metro Area (they had amassed a small catalog of unreleased vocal tracks since starting the project). Featuring the incredible pipes of Philip Owusu (of Ubiquity Records' Owusu & Hannibal), "Read My Mind" is a dynamic boogie romp full of contrast: sweet yet meloncholy, warm yet raw. Following on from their last EP, Metro Area have pushed themselves to once again make heartfelt, personal music that stands out from what the rest of the dance music pack is doing. "Honey Circuit" leads off at 45 RPM and spread over a full A-side of wax. Chock full of sonic detail and suspenseful arrangements, this track has the bassline and rhythm to slam the dance floor and the musical hooks to lock in minds, including unusual vocal lines sensually executed by Wanda Felicia. "Rhythm Reel #6" is a deep DJ mix tool that hearkens back to the pioneering rhythm track records that are dear to the duo's hearts. It's been more than two and a half years since Metro Area last shook up the scene with a 12" record. That record was "MIURA" - a cult classic that continues to sell today and crossed over into DJ crates across the musical spectrum. after they huge full-lenght they were eager to get back to the 12" format, where the quality of the music (rather than the number of magazine articles) is the deciding factor between success and failure. METRO AREA 5, the newest installment in Metro Area's 12" series, is the result. This release finds the duo continuing on their quest for fresh sounds and timeless production, expanding their palette while retaining the emotional spirit of their first releases. "Nerves" is a suspenseful, driving piece with an irresistible groove soaked in frantic Latin percussion and fierce drums. Angular synthetic textures trade off aggressively, finally arriving at a gorgeous and melancholic destination awash in piano, strings and horns. "Proton Candy" is just as much of a floor mover with its super-tight electric bassline, but is more playful in its approach, conjuring up dreams of teenage roller rinks crossbred with hardcore disco and bubblegum R&B. This reissue of ENV001 "Premise EP" is remastered from the original tapes and features the original artwork by Todd Sines. Featuring a remix from The Connection Machine, the 1995 EP was recorded in Ohio and originally mastered inDetroit by the legendary Ron Murphy. The release marked the end of four years of Geist living the midwest and his return to the metro area of New York City, a dramatic shift that would soon be reflected in Environ's sound.
In 1994, with only a single 12" in his discography, Morgan Geist decided to start his own record label. His debut on Dan Curtin's Metamorphic label was inspired by the sounds of Detroit techno and Chicago house. But Geist was equally fascinated by UK imports from labels like Warp, B12, and ART. He sought to combine these inspirations on the first release of his new label, Environ. Featuring a remix from The Connection Machine, whose unique "Bitflower" was released the year before on Carl Craig's Planet E, "Premise EP" (1995) was recorded in Ohio and mastered in Detroit by the legendary Ron Murphy. "I started fooling around with these instrumental tracks at night for fun. Each track was in a different style, but they seemed to work nicely as a group. By the time I asked Kelley to contribute strings to the A-side, the record really started feeling like the sequel to Super."

The newest single, Stop & Go, is the second release since the 2015 debut, Calling Card/Mezzanine. Vocals are once again provided by Jessy Lanza, whose two solo albums on Hyperdub were met with critical acclaim and were both shortlisted for the Polaris Prize. San Serac has been bringing his blood house and wrong boogie funk to the clubs for a minute now. In the last few years he has toured extensively with Junior Boys, Wilderness and Shout Out Out Out Out, and his kinetic live show has disrupted every kind of venue including noted parties like Horse Meat Disco, Wierd and P.S.1 Warm Up in NYC. His self-released Professional album garnered many kind words from the underground, and his acclaimed Stereo Image project (with ex-Junior Boy Johnny Dark) made The Wire's top albums of 2008. After meeting Morgan Geist on tour the two got to talking, and the rest, as they say, is history. "Music Never Ends" is San Serac's first record for Environ, and it will burn a club hole in your soul with its catchy lyrics and no wave hip house style. Also on the A side is "Night Work," a manic depressive boogie track relaxing somewhere between the 80s funk of Aurra and the soul insanity of Station To Station. The B side is a remix of "Music Never Ends" by Morgan Geist himself, a stripped down classic techno jammer guaranteed to rock the crowd. San Serac is currently planning live dates for the fall, recording the follow up to Professional and wrapping up an album written and recorded with French house star Para One. He lives in Massachusetts.

REPRESS!!!!!!DETROIT is the first single from Double Night Time, the upcoming album from Morgan Geist and his first solo artist album in over a decade. It features two epic, gorgeous remixes from Grammy-nominated remixer Carl Craig and features vocals from Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys. After turning the dance music world on its head with his Metro Area project (alongside collaborator Darshan Jesrani) and mining rare disco gems with the seminal obscure disco DJ mix Unclassics (2004), Geist decided it was time to turn his attention to a solo album. “Detroit” is the lead song from the album and (as careful listeners may discern) is based loosely on “24K,” Geist’s cult classic track from 2001 (taken from the SUPER EP and recently covered by The Whitest Boy

"Entropy Reigns" is the first single from Kelley Polar's highly-acclaimed new album I Need You to Hold On While the Sky Is Falling. Already a cult hit, the song is getting more and more radio play and charting each week. It was downloaded nearly 100,000 times in its week as iTunes' Discovery Download, and Pitchfork (in its glowing review of I Need You... on March 4, 2008) said "...the sumptuous, string-drenched boy-girl duet of 'Entropy Reigns (In the Celestial City)' is one of the best of the year so far."We knew "Entropy Reigns" needed an incredible remix, so it was a simple decision to enlist Ewan Pearson and Al Usher (who also operate under the name Partial Arts) to work their magic. Pearson is a dance music veteran, and remixes for the likes of Depeche Mode, Chemical Brothers, Seelenluft, Franz Ferdinand and Freeform 5 have made him one of the genre's most respected producers. He has programmed for Goldfrapp and Gwen Stefani and his production credits include albums for Tracey Thorn and The Rapture, as well as Ladytron, Chikinki and Jeb Loy Nichols, amongst others. Partial Arts is a highly-respected name in dance music with several fantastic EPs on Kompact, Out of the Loop and Battle, as well as remixes for labels including Rekids and Ministry of Sound. Not only did these two have a keen understanding of pop music, sweaty dancefloors and strings, but they were big fans of Kelley Polar - so they turned in two remixes instead of one! For the more house- and tech-driven floors, check the four-on-the-floor beauty of the "Pearson and Usher's Closed System Dub" (spread deep and loud across the A-side). First up is 'Night Blooming' feat pbeatgirl - a provocative figure in Sweden's post-pop underground. The sensual late-night lullaby has soft drums and even softer spoken words whispered in your ear. Add in the dreamy synths, and you have perfect house hypnosis. 'Someone Stop Me' slows the tempo but ups the texture with raw, tumbling drum loops, incidental guitar licks and sustained pads that help you zone out and gaze into the distance on a summer's afternoon.
'Svalor Radiosignal (Axel's Dub)' features Joakim Åhlund, who is currently on tour of Australia with his band Les Big Byrd, and is also a guitarist and lead singer in the Caesars band he founded, as well as being a prolific producer. World-renowned multi-disciplinary artist Jockum Nordström works across painting, sculpture and collage and also features. There's a signature Boman innocence and charming naivety to the melodies here. They leave wispy, painterly trails above the smooth, dubby groove and fill you with warmth and comfort. Closer 'Spooky' journeys later into the night with a more rickety, edgy mood, but beautiful, shape-shifting synths are like a tender hand guiding you into darkness.
This is Axel Boman at his most intimate and expressive, a quietly powerful EP for heads-down moments and after-hours warmth.

The story of how we heard about D.J. City.
Once upon a time P.P. D.J.ed in Stockholm. Picked up by legend Sling from the airport, with what I recall was a very nice old Jeep, that had a tape deck.
That Tape deck was playing a cassette that quickly caught our attention. We found out, on it was „1- 800 Techno“, a project by another local legend D.J. City. Somehow we received the tape and digital files and have been playing them ever since.
Years later we met D.J. City at a gig for Cocktail D’Amore, it was a brief and pleasant introduction as he was handing over the decks to us.
It took some more time until we really got in touch and started a work relation that quickly turned into friendship. Circa 10 years later, we have the opportunity to properly shine light on this project that started it all.
You can listen to the full release digitally and on Vinyl for the first time. „1-800 Techno“ that is Karl Lihagen & Johan Norling (aka D.J. City) with „For Several Eternals Before There Were Years“. This I guess is what you call a „full circle moment“. Enjoy!
