Another two years have passed since Metro Area last shook up the scene with a 12", and it is with great pleasure that Environ presents the latest outing from Morgan Geist & Darshan Jesrani: METRO AREA 7! This release finds Metro Area continuing on their quest for fresh sounds and timeless production, expanding the compositional palette while retaining the emotional spirit of their early influences. Metro Area have pushed themselves to once again make heartfelt, personal music that stands out from what the rest of the dance music pack is doing and the duo feel this EP is their strongest work since the release of their 2002 self-titled album. "Read My Mind" is the first full-on vocal track to actually be released by Metro Area (they had amassed a small catalog of unreleased vocal tracks since starting the project). Featuring the incredible pipes of Philip Owusu (of Ubiquity Records' Owusu & Hannibal), "Read My Mind" is a dynamic boogie romp full of contrast: sweet yet meloncholy, warm yet raw. It hearkens back to the days where songwriting and arrangement still had a place in dance music and we hope you'll love it. "Honey Circuit" leads off at 45 RPM and spread over a full A-side of wax. It's been more than two and a half years since Metro Area last shook up the scene with a 12" record. That record was "MIURA" - a cult classic that continues to sell today and crossed over into DJ crates across the musical spectrum. after they huge full-lenght they were eager to get back to the 12" format, where the quality of the music (rather than the number of magazine articles) is the deciding factor between success and failure. METRO AREA 5, the newest installment in Metro Area's 12" series, is the result. This release finds the duo continuing on their quest for fresh sounds and timeless production, expanding their palette while retaining the emotional spirit of their first releases. "Nerves" is a suspenseful, driving piece with an irresistible groove soaked in frantic Latin percussion and fierce drums. Angular synthetic textures trade off aggressively, finally arriving at a gorgeous and melancholic destination awash in piano, strings and horns. "Proton Candy" is just as much of a floor mover with its super-tight electric bassline, but is more playful in its approach, conjuring up dreams of teenage roller rinks crossbred with hardcore disco and bubblegum R&B. This reissue of ENV001 "Premise EP" is remastered from the original tapes and features the original artwork by Todd Sines. Featuring a remix from The Connection Machine, the 1995 EP was recorded in Ohio and originally mastered inDetroit by the legendary Ron Murphy. The release marked the end of four years of Geist living the midwest and his return to the metro area of New York City, a dramatic shift that would soon be reflected in Environ's sound.
In 1994, with only a single 12" in his discography, Morgan Geist decided to start his own record label. His debut on Dan Curtin's Metamorphic label was inspired by the sounds of Detroit techno and Chicago house. But Geist was equally fascinated by UK imports from labels like Warp, B12, and ART. He sought to combine these inspirations on the first release of his new label, Environ. Featuring a remix from The Connection Machine, whose unique "Bitflower" was released the year before on Carl Craig's Planet E, "Premise EP" (1995) was recorded in Ohio and mastered in Detroit by the legendary Ron Murphy. The release also marked the end of four years of Geist living the midwest and his return to the metro area of New York City, a dramatic shift that would soon be reflected in Environ's sound. To celebrate two decades of Metro Area, Environ has partnered with renowned mastering engineer Matt Colton (Metropolis Studios) to remaster and recut the first four Metro Area 12"s: Metro Area, Metro Area 2, Metro Area 3 and Metro Area 4. Unlike the album reissue, these records include the original, extended 12" versions of all songs, including some which have never been re-released.
Metro Area 2 is the duo's second 12" EP, originally released in 2000.

"I was working most days with Kelley Polar on our new vocal project, Au Suisse, which isn't really dance music at all," he explains. "I started fooling around with these instrumental tracks at night for fun. Each track was in a different style, but they seemed to work nicely as a group. By the time I asked Kelley to contribute strings to the A-side, the record really started feeling like the sequel to Super."

The Galleria is a project from Morgan Geist (Storm Queen, Metro Area) that ripples with echoes of the indigenous music of long-dead suburban New Jersey shopping malls and NYC radio stations: bombastic freestyle, club dubs, razor-edits and bubblegum-pop R&B. The newest single, Stop & Go, is the second release since the 2015 debut, Calling Card/Mezzanine. Vocals are once again provided by Jessy Lanza, whose two solo albums on Hyperdub were met with critical acclaim and were both shortlisted for the Polaris Prize. Stop & Go features a drum-a-pella for creative mixing, plus an extended, dancefloor-friendly dub.

San Serac has been bringing his blood house and wrong boogie funk to the clubs for a minute now. In the last few years he has toured extensively with Junior Boys, Wilderness and Shout Out Out Out Out, and his kinetic live show has disrupted every kind of venue including noted parties like Horse Meat Disco, Wierd and P.S.1 Warm Up in NYC. His self-released Professional album garnered many kind words from the underground, and his acclaimed Stereo Image project (with ex-Junior Boy Johnny Dark) made The Wire's top albums of 2008. After meeting Morgan Geist on tour the two got to talking, and the rest, as they say, is history. "Music Never Ends" is San Serac's first record for Environ, and it will burn a club hole in your soul with its catchy lyrics and no wave hip house style. Also on the A side is "Night Work," a manic depressive boogie track relaxing somewhere between the 80s funk of Aurra and the soul insanity of Station To Station. The B side is a remix of "Music Never Ends" by Morgan Geist himself, a stripped down classic techno jammer guaranteed to rock the crowd. San Serac is currently planning live dates for the fall, recording the follow up to Professional and wrapping up an album written and recorded with French house star Para One. He lives in Massachusetts.

REPRESS!!!!!!DETROIT is the first single from Double Night Time, the upcoming album from Morgan Geist and his first solo artist album in over a decade. It features two epic, gorgeous remixes from Grammy-nominated remixer Carl Craig and features vocals from Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys. After turning the dance music world on its head with his Metro Area project (alongside collaborator Darshan Jesrani) and mining rare disco gems with the seminal obscure disco DJ mix Unclassics (2004), Geist decided it was time to turn his attention to a solo album. “Detroit” is the lead song from the album and (as careful listeners may discern) is based loosely on “24K,” Geist’s cult classic track from 2001 (taken from the SUPER EP and recently covered by The Whitest Boy

The “c2RMX2” remix is just as devastating for the floor, but packs the emotional punch of retaining Greenspan’s vocals and Geist’s original chord progressions and melodies.

"Entropy Reigns" is the first single from Kelley Polar's highly-acclaimed new album I Need You to Hold On While the Sky Is Falling. Already a cult hit, the song is getting more and more radio play and charting each week. It was downloaded nearly 100,000 times in its week as iTunes' Discovery Download, and Pitchfork (in its glowing review of I Need You... on March 4, 2008) said "...the sumptuous, string-drenched boy-girl duet of 'Entropy Reigns (In the Celestial City)' is one of the best of the year so far."We knew "Entropy Reigns" needed an incredible remix, so it was a simple decision to enlist Ewan Pearson and Al Usher (who also operate under the name Partial Arts) to work their magic. Pearson is a dance music veteran, and remixes for the likes of Depeche Mode, Chemical Brothers, Seelenluft, Franz Ferdinand and Freeform 5 have made him one of the genre's most respected producers. He has programmed for Goldfrapp and Gwen Stefani and his production credits include albums for Tracey Thorn and The Rapture, as well as Ladytron, Chikinki and Jeb Loy Nichols, amongst others. Partial Arts is a highly-respected name in dance music with several fantastic EPs on Kompact, Out of the Loop and Battle, as well as remixes for labels including Rekids and Ministry of Sound. Not only did these two have a keen understanding of pop music, sweaty dancefloors and strings, but they were big fans of Kelley Polar - so they turned in two remixes instead of one! For the more house- and tech-driven floors, check the four-on-the-floor beauty of the "Pearson and Usher's Closed System Dub" (spread deep and loud across the A-side). For more electro- and pop-fuelled DJ sets, "Pearson and Usher's Second Law Dynamix" does the trick, complete with an insane acid breakdown. Another two years have passed since Metro Area last shook up the scene with a 12", and it is with great pleasure that Environ presents the latest outing from Morgan Geist & Darshan Jesrani: METRO AREA 7! This release finds Metro Area continuing on their quest for fresh sounds and timeless production, expanding the compositional palette while retaining the emotional spirit of their early influences. Metro Area have pushed themselves to once again make heartfelt, personal music that stands out from what the rest of the dance music pack is doing and the duo feel this EP is their strongest work since the release of their 2002 self-titled album. Check out the new record from new Environ act BABY OLIVER! More hot and twisted tracks for disco jackers and neurotic nu-romantics...you don't want to miss it. Baby Oliver's debut "PRIMETIME/HYPOCHONDRIAC" was an underground smash hit, gaining noteriety in sets by the finest DJs from disco (Metro Area, Prins Thomas) to house/techno (praise from Carl Craig) and indie floors (Junior Boys, Optimo). And it's no wonder - like the best club music, Baby Oliver's jams slice across genre divides and sound like nothing else coming out! Like any music that makes one feel uncomfortable with its unfamiliarity, it was universally despised by teen clones on venues like iTunes while trendmaking DJs licensed it for their mix CDs (LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy among them). Baby Oliver's new jams expand on the territory he pioneered on his debut. "Feelings 2" sounds like an out-take from Prince on the day he forgot to take his meds, with the result cut and sliced by Ron Hardy and served up by the Hot Mix 5 on WMBX. Always unpredictable, Baby Oliver flips the usual male lyrical cliche and tells his lover, "You just give me sex when I need a love fix - and you know that's not the same." The B-side is a slow-building, dark epic called "Shot Caller" that juxtaposes the sounds of gunshots with the famous Linn Drum rim shot sound in a wry sonic pun. "Chrysanthemum EP" is the first new recording from Kelley Polar since his hugely successful debut album released in 2005, "Love Songs of The Hanging Gardens." This EP continues his unique take on pop music and includes an extended and radical B-side rework (exclusive to this EP) for DJs and dancefloors. This EP precedes a brand-new album from Mr. Polar scheduled for Fall 2007. The seeds of "Chrysanthemum" are described by Mr. Polar himself as a confluence of the apocalyptic fear that permeated all Cold War childhoods, comic-book illustrations of blood and violence abstracted into flora and a B-grade science fiction novel's portraying two teens in the final throes of lovemaking as the world is destroyed in nuclear apocalypse. Yet despite this decidedly dark and unique approach, the song is nevertheless pure pop: catchy and indelible once heard. "Rosenband" is lighter in subject matter yet just as deep musically, filled with synthetic layers and rhythms that reveal themselves slowly on subsequent listens. Despite the immediacy of the melodies, there is a detail that permeates all of Kelley Polar's work and rewards the attentive listener. A completely reworked instrumental version of "Rosenband" is stretched across the B-side and is - dare we say it - a dancefloor killer, with a long, mix-friendly intro building to an incredible crescendo. The track is arranged and mixed by Morgan Geist and was done so with DJs in mind!

I discovered the Beta Band, like I discovered a lot of great music, basically through eventually surrendering to the enthused urgings of a mate who was cooler than me. He continually evangelized about the EP's. I was lost to the concert hall and firmly ensconced on the dancefloor by then and highly resistant, but quite taken by the idea that a band would bring out extended plays rather than singles. When I did check them out, I was instantly smitten by their originality and power.
The band, therefore, were pivotal for me in terms of my own musical journey, in that they represented a gateway back into indie guitar music, which I'd basically given up since becoming obsessed with rave and acid house.
The Beta Band were definitely a band for the cool cognoscenti- like my buddy- the ones you make a bit of a tit of yourself trying to convert quite straight boring people to.
The emotions they induced were a kind of throwback to school days when you were very pompous and prescriptive about what you liked, and derisive towards non believers. It's a testimony to the power of the music that they could take me to the raw state of the younger man.
I took it personally that they didn't hit the mainstream commercial base. At least two of the three albums they made deserved quadruple platinum status. Hot Shots II and Heroes to Zeros are permanently lodged very high in my top one hundred albums of all time.
So, the return of the Beta Band has me moving into the same mode of immature, adolescent anticipation. Everyone should have the Beta Band albums and EP's in their collection. It still kind of annoys me - in fact it bugs the shit out of me - that most of them don't.
And that really is something.

Amsterdam natives Maarten Smeets and Lars Dales, aka Dam Swindle, unveil their third long-player with the release of a new track, the first to be shared from the upcoming album, ‘Open’ - out on 30 May 2025 via Heist Recordings.
The new album sees the acclaimed duo dive far beyond the deep sonic waters they’re most known for, exploring lower tempos, synthwave, hip-house, and ambient across fourteen tracks. With a gestation period that traces back several years, ‘Open’ is their most intimate and personal body of work thus far, birthed during a time of self-reflection away from touring and personal transformation as individuals.
“We felt the need to tell a very personal story through our music as a translation of our personal development in the past years. We also wanted to make music without a specific goal in mind; We simply wanted to create. By taking away the grid of dance music and any expectations of what a Dam Swindle song should sound like, the creativity started to flow naturally with songs in many different styles and tempos. Italia Synthetica 1981-1985 represents the musical mutation that occurred after the post-punk hangover gave way to more frigid emotional shores, in-line with the synth-wave moment that was sweeping Europe and the white cliffs of Albion. This scene flourished in Italy between 1981-1985, and the musicians that came out of it are still revered today (particularly in the US). Robotic rhythms and intuitions that, besides sharing common ground with the electronic movements that had come before, also knew how to fill up the dancefloor. WRWTFWW Records is honored to announce the much anticipated reissue of Satoshi Ashikawa's undeniable classic of Japanese environmental/ambient/minimalism, Still Way (Wave Notation 2). The album, available on vinyl (first time since 1982) and digipack CD (with one bonus track), comes with a cover artwork by Hiroshi Yoshimura and liner notes by Midori Takada, Satoshi Ashikawa himself, and Irish producer Gareth Quinn Redmond (whose Still Way-inspired album Laistigh den Ghleo is being released simultaneously on WRWTFWW).

Initially released in 1982 as part of the Wave Notation series*, Still Way is, without a doubt, a seminal Japanese environmental/ambient/minimalism album, often mentioned alongside Midori Takada's Through Looking Glass and Hiroshi Yoshimura's Green as one of the genre's most important pieces.
"Like the moment of stillness, after the wind passes through the garden, when the rain stops for a brief second…" Notably inspired by Erik Satie's Furniture Music and Brian Eno's ambient work, Satoshi Ashikawa aimed to compose music "intended to be listened to in a casual manner, as a musical landscape or a sound object…not something that would stimulate listeners but music that should drift like smoke and become part of the environment."
The result is simply phenomenal, subtle minimalism and emotional elegance exquisitely orchestrated by Satoshi Ishikawa and his team consisting of his wife Masami Ashikawa (on flute), Midori Takada (on vibraphone), Yuko Utsumi (on harp), Tomoko Sono (on piano), and Junko Arase (on vibraphone).
In conjunction with Still Way, WRWTFWW is releasing Laistigh den Ghleo, a companion album by Irish ambient/minimalist composer Gareth Quinn Redmond, inspired by Ashikawa's approach.
