"Quadrilocular EP", Morgan Geist's first 12" record, originally released in 1994 on Metamorphic Recordings is remastered from the original tapes and features artwork inspired by the 1994 edition. A melodic "Midwest techno" classic, Geist composed, recorded and mixed the project on a minimal, tape-based setup in his college dorm room in Ohio. Nonetheless, the sophisticated programming and meticulous mixing techniques that would characterize his later discography were already evident.

Featuring a jacking remix by Curtin, Environ's reissue is mastered from the original tapes and features artwork inspired by the 1994 edition.

This reissue of ENV001 "Premise EP" is remastered from the original tapes and features the original artwork by Todd Sines. Featuring a remix from The Connection Machine, the 1995 EP was recorded in Ohio and originally mastered inDetroit by the legendary Ron Murphy. The release marked the end of four years of Geist living the midwest and his return to the metro area of New York City, a dramatic shift that would soon be reflected in Environ's sound.



In 1994, with only a single 12" in his discography, Morgan Geist decided to start his own record label. His debut on Dan Curtin's Metamorphic label was inspired by the sounds of Detroit techno and Chicago house. But Geist was equally fascinated by UK imports from labels like Warp, B12, and ART. He sought to combine these inspirations on the first release of his new label, Environ. Featuring a remix from The Connection Machine, whose unique "Bitflower" was released the year before on Carl Craig's Planet E, "Premise EP" (1995) was recorded in Ohio and mastered in Detroit by the legendary Ron Murphy. The release also marked the end of four years of Geist living the midwest and his return to the metro area of New York City, a dramatic shift that would soon be reflected in Environ's sound. This reissue of ENV001 "Premise EP" is remastered from the original tapes and features the original artwork by Todd Sines.

Duper, the new release from Morgan Geist, is a not-so-subtle callback to his 2001 EP, Super. "I was working most days with Kelley Polar on our new vocal project, Au Suisse, which isn't really dance music at all," he explains. "I started fooling around with these instrumental tracks at night for fun. Each track was in a different style, but they seemed to work nicely as a group. By the time I asked Kelley to contribute strings to the A-side, the record really started feeling like the sequel to Super."

Super Duper ­- get it?

Indeed, the playful synth riffs and sweeping disco strings of "Twilight Express" echo the palette of Geist's cult classic "24K" and early Metro Area. "Black Test Car" is a unique collision of minimal, almost Krautrock-style drums, sound library textures and spacy electro percussion. Meanwhile, "Feeling Is Mutual" is a rare acid outing that pushes beyond the usual comfort zone, the 303 acting more as feather than hammer on top of major-key modulations. "I love a lot of Aphex Twin and I love sweet, "quiet storm"-style R&B," says Geist. "I figured, why not?"

The Galleria is a project from Morgan Geist (Storm Queen, Metro Area) that ripples with echoes of the indigenous music of long-dead suburban New Jersey shopping malls and NYC radio stations: bombastic freestyle, club dubs, razor-edits and bubblegum-pop R&B. The newest single, Stop & Go, is the second release since the 2015 debut, Calling Card/Mezzanine. Vocals are once again provided by Jessy Lanza, whose two solo albums on Hyperdub were met with critical acclaim and were both shortlisted for the Polaris Prize. San Serac has been bringing his blood house and wrong boogie funk to the clubs for a minute now. In the last few years he has toured extensively with Junior Boys, Wilderness and Shout Out Out Out Out, and his kinetic live show has disrupted every kind of venue including noted parties like Horse Meat Disco, Wierd and P.S.1 Warm Up in NYC. His self-released Professional album garnered many kind words from the underground, and his acclaimed Stereo Image project (with ex-Junior Boy Johnny Dark) made The Wire's top albums of 2008. After meeting Morgan Geist on tour the two got to talking, and the rest, as they say, is history. "Music Never Ends" is San Serac's first record for Environ, and it will burn a club hole in your soul with its catchy lyrics and no wave hip house style. Also on the A side is "Night Work," a manic depressive boogie track relaxing somewhere between the 80s funk of Aurra and the soul insanity of Station To Station. The B side is a remix of "Music Never Ends" by Morgan Geist himself, a stripped down classic techno jammer guaranteed to rock the crowd. After turning the dance music world on its head with his Metro Area project (alongside collaborator Darshan Jesrani) and mining rare disco gems with the seminal obscure disco DJ mix Unclassics (2004), Geist decided it was time to turn his attention to a solo album. “Detroit” is the lead song from the album and (as careful listeners may discern) is based loosely on “24K,” Geist’s cult classic track from 2001 (taken from the SUPER EP and recently covered by The Whitest Boy
Alive for their performances, a 7” release and almost 400,000 downloads from their mySpace page). The new, wistful lyrics (further emphasized by Greenspan’s evocative delivery) and melancholy feel (an ode, certainly, to the electronic music of Detroit itself) create a potent combination when contrasted against Geist’s meticulous production and trademark grooves. A native of the city for which the track is named, Carl Craig is a world-renowned remixer and was definitely the man for the job of tackling “Detroit.” Geist is a long-time Craig fan, and he knew the remixer was already adept at working with Greenspan’s vocals (it was Craig’s remix of Junior Boys “Like A Child” that received the Grammy nomination for Best Remix). After many revisions, Craig finally created two remixes that combined elements of all of his previous efforts. The “c2RMX1” remix is a full-on stormer in the classic C2 instrumental style (and featuring occasional MC’ing from the man himself!). The “c2RMX2” remix is just as devastating for the floor, but packs the emotional punch of retaining Greenspan’s vocals and Geist’s original chord progressions and melodies.

"Entropy Reigns" is the first single from Kelley Polar's highly-acclaimed new album I Need You to Hold On While the Sky Is Falling. Already a cult hit, the song is getting more and more radio play and charting each week. It was downloaded nearly 100,000 times in its week as iTunes' Discovery Download, and Pitchfork (in its glowing review of I Need You... on March 4, 2008) said "...the sumptuous, string-drenched boy-girl duet of 'Entropy Reigns (In the Celestial City)' is one of the best of the year so far."We knew "Entropy Reigns" needed an incredible remix, so it was a simple decision to enlist Ewan Pearson and Al Usher (who also operate under the name Partial Arts) to work their magic. Pearson is a dance music veteran, and remixes for the likes of Depeche Mode, Chemical Brothers, Seelenluft, Franz Ferdinand and Freeform 5 have made him one of the genre's most respected producers. He has programmed for Goldfrapp and Gwen Stefani and his production credits include albums for Tracey Thorn and The Rapture, as well as Ladytron, Chikinki and Jeb Loy Nichols, amongst others. Partial Arts is a highly-respected name in dance music with several fantastic EPs on Kompact, Out of the Loop and Battle, as well as remixes for labels including Rekids and Ministry of Sound. Not only did these two have a keen understanding of pop music, sweaty dancefloors and strings, but they were big fans of Kelley Polar - so they turned in two remixes instead of one! For the more house- and tech-driven floors, check the four-on-the-floor beauty of the "Pearson and Usher's Closed System Dub" (spread deep and loud across the A-side). For more electro- and pop-fuelled DJ sets, "Pearson and Usher's Second Law Dynamix" does the trick, complete with an insane acid breakdown. For the vinyl purists, we even threw the original album version on wax for you as well!

Another two years have passed since Metro Area last shook up the scene with a 12", and it is with great pleasure that Environ presents the latest outing from Morgan Geist & Darshan Jesrani: METRO AREA 7! This release finds Metro Area continuing on their quest for fresh sounds and timeless production, expanding the compositional palette while retaining the emotional spirit of their early influences. Metro Area have pushed themselves to once again make heartfelt, personal music that stands out from what the rest of the dance music pack is doing and the duo feel this EP is their strongest work since the release of their 2002 self-titled album. Check out the new record from new Environ act BABY OLIVER! More hot and twisted tracks for disco jackers and neurotic nu-romantics...you don't want to miss it. Baby Oliver's debut "PRIMETIME/HYPOCHONDRIAC" was an underground smash hit, gaining noteriety in sets by the finest DJs from disco (Metro Area, Prins Thomas) to house/techno (praise from Carl Craig) and indie floors (Junior Boys, Optimo). And it's no wonder - like the best club music, Baby Oliver's jams slice across genre divides and sound like nothing else coming out! Like any music that makes one feel uncomfortable with its unfamiliarity, it was universally despised by teen clones on venues like iTunes while trendmaking DJs licensed it for their mix CDs (LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy among them). Baby Oliver's new jams expand on the territory he pioneered on his debut. "Feelings 2" sounds like an out-take from Prince on the day he forgot to take his meds, with the result cut and sliced by Ron Hardy and served up by the Hot Mix 5 on WMBX. Environ is proud to announce the reissue of Morgan Geist's cult classic Super. Originally released in summer 2001, the record is an ode to New York City and many of the producer's most vital influences. With live strings from the Kelley Polar Quartet and plenty of disco DNA, it's no mystery that this was made by half of Metro Area (and released just months before their underground classic "Miura"). Remastered and cut by the award-winning Matt Colton of Alchemy Mastering.

Berlin scene figurehead Gilles Aiken, AKA Edward, coming through with a massive Kalahari debut (and it’s safe to say he understood the assignment).

Booting off on a massive remix tip as the veteran producer reinterprets Mike Parker & Aric Rist’s Trybet project, but trust him to allow for a moment of dancefloor introspection. It’s prime early morning gear in a rousing juxtaposition of beatific string harmony and tough-as-nails deepness. Triumphant ‘window shutters open in the club at 5 AM’-type shit.

The other two are quintessential Edward: impressionistic, widescreen odysseys across lysergic terrain, but groove-forward where it counts. A pair of head-spinning explorations intended for the dancefloor, flush with shadowy flex, insectoid detail and tripped-out flourishes while keeping it funked-out in the tradition of Detroit.

The ‘Deep Sea Villain EP’ plumbs the depths of smudged abstraction, and as we’ve come to expect from Edward, it’s big on hallucinatory detail. It all oozes the multi-layered surrealism that typifies his best work. Proper transcendent biz.

I met Aaron Parr back in 1992 aka the golden era of electronic dance music. Everything was kicking off in the L.A Underground and he was working slap dap in the epi-center at Beatnonstop Records on Melrose Avenue in the heart of Los Angeles. At the time I was living in Santa Barbara still doing my college radio show "The Joy of X" and coming down to L.A on the weekends almost every week since 1989. Aaron had been a mainstay down the street at Streetsounds Records where my then Young friend 19 year old Steve Loria worked alongside warehouse dj & underground legend Barry Weaver.

These were heady times. Clubs, after-hours and renegade break in warehouse jams were the order of the day…every day! The shops fueled the dj's with the dope records and the ravers with the party flyers, the Record Stores were the hub of the whole scene and the key was befriending these upwardly mobile soon to be underground superstars if you wanted fat slabs of wax AND to know where the real deal undergrounds were shaking…literally.

In 1992 I got selected for the U.S Olympic Basketball team and headed back to Europe in an effort to make it to Barcelona and get smashed for the GOLD by the dream team in front of the whole World…no thanks! We got knocked out by Petrovic and the Czechs right b4 Barcelona!
Anywho after 3 months I returned to Cali and there had been a shift, Steve Loria moved up the street from Streetsounds & opened Beatnonstop and it was HUGE! It had quickly become the largest independent record store in the U.S. The scene was massive, everything had exploded. I got in where I fit in and started a weekly Techno club "Happy Planet" on Tuesdays and a House club "NYC" with Doc Martin on a Friday. Both were rammed.

Aaron the industrious Brit from Nottingham & his bredren Dave Fong went to work early too, putting out the Rudiments EP on Worldship Records and then following up with Psycho Ray in 1998.. In 1998 II closed my Culture shop "Soma" down in Santa Barbara, packed up my studio & sound system and moved to L.A official. I had gotten the offer to manage Beatnonstop on Melrose after Steve Loria left and jumped at the chance.

I quickly put together the Beatnonstop Record Label, releasing a double pack "Pacific Coast House EP" feat myself and local producers Aztech Sol, CPen and Kenneth Graham/Steve Loria. I then kicked off PCH Records with "Rhodes Through Space" and after a drunken rendezvous at the Hall of Records Studio one night I signed Aaron & Daves Teflon Dons "My Vice" to the labels.

Vice was right down my alley a dark, grimy acid track with menacing Pacino samples.
After a buying trip for Beatnonstop to NYC. Harry the Bastard from Watts took me down to meet fellow Brit Stefan at Dance Tracks in Manhattan where I found the sample "Our Music" on an accapella in the bins. Super inspired after two weeks trolling round every record distributors warehouse (Watts, Nemesis, Syntax, Downtown etc) and hitting every record store in Manhattan (Vinyl Mania, Discorama, Frankie Bones shop, Satellite and on and on) I came home to L.A and me and Nate loaded up the Emu 64 Ultra sampler and penned "Our Music."

The track is obviously very New York inspired and was received well by Big Apple Dj's David Morales, Junior Vasquez, Roger Sanches & Baby Hec Romero. I would definitely say this track was a slow burner elsewhere and took off later getting the nod from DJ Deep in Paris, + Terry Francis, Eddie Richards and Mr. C in the UK.

It got no love in L.A surprisingly but everywhere else across the country with Miguel Migs and DJ Garth in the Bay, King Britt in Philly and DJ Pope in Baltimore. Now it's back on wax after 25 years remastered by the mighty Martin Iveson and I think the World is finally ready!
