Fast-moving times, in which popularity and quality are often equated or commonly confused with one another, aids and abets this imitation game some call conformity, others professionalism. In the end, both paths will end up in predictability. Here's where Stathis Kalatzis, aka Mr. Statik, comes to play. The resident at Athens' multi-purpose cultural space Six D.O.G.S has not only been one of the scene's pivotal figures, but since he started to release his first solo releases in the mid-00s, the now Berlin-based Greek DJ has earned a reputation for being a trend-ignoring, unconventional producer.

Whether his output for BPitch Control, Rotary Cocktail, or even last year's debut EP "Rogue
Cherub" for AWAY - Mr. Statik enjoys thinking outside the box by crossing his diverse pop-cultural interests and pulling in expertise and perspective from beyond the usual functional formulas. After a decade of not staying in one comfort zone or sticking to one musical direction, he finds himself more comfortable in his producer shoes presenting his debut album "Metamorphose". Housing a few film references in this for Mr. Statik typical nebulous fashion, the ten tracks not only carrying the narrative potential of an imaginary score, but primarily exploring a versatile array of influences, themes, and contradictions (which Mr. Statik as an illustrator also united on the albums' artwork). Ranging from the sci-fi infused album opener "Insomnia", the first non-dancefloor piece he ever produced around 7 years ago, over "?atastrophe", an homage to ancient Greek theater, to collaborate with others such as Beatrice Ballabile, Jan Niklas Jansen (Locas In Love), and RBMA alumnus Claude Speeed, who contributed synth work on "Soulfur".

"Metamorphose" succeeds in constantly changing its tones, while maintaining an emotional
frame, in which Mr. Statik's melancholic, introvert, at times hopeful and euphoric, bottom end
inclined electronic music can elaborate.

MR. STATIK ON HIS ALBUM DEBUT:

"I have always tried to approach producing as storytelling exercises. This allowed me to
experiment finding myself in uncharted territories, more specifically in music that doesn't
necessarily fit to a dance floor - unless it's a very adventurous one. "Metamorphose'' is loyal to that mindset. I usually draw inspiration from cinema and comic books and have always been fascinated with sci-fi, south asian culture, surrealism and the dreamworld. Initially the album was supposed to be a collage of the various influences that had shaped my life, but ended up being something very different. During the conceptualization and recording process a lot of things around us have changed, primarily for the worse. I became more and more sensitive and susceptible to pessimism and trendy visions of "dystopian futurism", so that the LP emerged being an exercise in positivity: 'Metamorphose' is a verb describing the act of
conversion, but in Greeklish it is describes the urge towards others to start transforming their
environment, in this case for the better."

With previous contributions from Joe Claussell, Move D, Mr. Ties, Reagenz, Discrete Circuit and their very own AWAY Soundsystem, the Berlin label AWAY achieved a great deal of attention since its first release back in 2015. After having played at their infamous party series before, the Greek all-rounder Mr. Statik now also debuts as a producer on AWAY. As emphasized with releases on such labels as BPitch Control, Amam, or Rotary Cocktail, the resident of Athen's club Six D.O.G.S draws inspiration from pop culture like science-fiction movies as well as comic books, also reflected in his "Rogue Cherub EP".

INFO ROGUE CHERUB EP
It's an open secret that Mr. Statik has a strong penchant for working with vocalists, and the title track is no different. Starting off with an ingenious medley assembled through samples, rhythmic elements, and a funk-infused bass-line, "Rogue Cherub EP" highlights the Greek's unordinary approach on house music. Despite the partly broken, partly playful vibe it's Dave Aju's distinctive voice holding everything together in a serene fashion. No less than the acknowledged master Matthew Herbert himself scales the hybrid down, attaching just the right disco-house touches to create yet another dance floor gem. "Morning Star" on the flipside tops off AWAY's fifth catalogue number by a well-crafted techno-meets-dub workout unfolding Mr. Statik's versatile core strengths as a producer.

Berlin collective AWAY ready the 4th release in their catalogue. With 001 on the label being a VA, 002 being an EP from Joe Claussell & Mr.Ties as AWAY Soundsystem and 003 being a second VA - they now present a split 2-tracker from label mainstay Move D and his pairing with Jonah Sharp under their collaborative guise of Reagenz.

Whilst keeping an anchor at Berlin's About Blank, AWAY have hosted parties at numerous other venues across the city as well as Barcelona and throughout have maintained a welcoming and free spirited attitude.

Harnessing this attitude and channeling the collective's Detroit influences, AWAY have developed their imprint which has so far taken shape over a set of 3 analogue-heavy VA's. Next in line follows suit in melding tough drums with Motor City pads. Natural in their progression, both tracks spark ardour as they steadily develop adding another fine addition to a blooming catalogue.

The Ghia saga unfolds once more, but in this chapter, there's a new and unique twist. "Out of Luck" draws its roots from a previously lost track, originally composed by the group in 1985. This time around, the song has been expertly reworked by Marian Tone, with new vocals by Adriano Prestel. The outcome? Quite possibly one of the smoothest and most refreshing modern funk tunes you'll hear this year.

But let's rewind to the beginning of this adventure: Earlier this year, DJ Scientist stumbled upon another early Ghia composition tucked away in the depths of a master tape. It was a treasure too precious to remain unheard. Sadly, the original track couldn't see the light of day due to sound quality and issues with the original vocals. To make matters more disappointing, no instrumental version survived. Thus, the only way to share this catchy boogie funk track with the world was to recreate it from scratch.

HYbr:ID Vol. 2 is the second installment of Alva Noto’sHYbr:IDseries initiated in 2021. The new album captures the music commissioned to score RichardSiegal's Ectopia performed in 2021 by Tanztheater Pina Bausch with Shooting into the Corner (2008-09) by Anish Kapoor. Building upon the captivating blend of immersive dub and electronica from the first installment, HYbr:ID Vol. 2 takes the listener on a journey into the realm of intricately manipulated digital production. These ten compositions delve into infinity, drawing inspiration from resonance and elasticity, concepts rooted in Minkowski's four-dimensional spacetime model. Throughout the album, Carsten Nicolai summons precise rhythmic patterns that gracefully hover, reminiscent of celestial bodies orbiting in perfect cosmic unison. The sonic landscape gradually unfolds with somber and brooding tones, incorporating spacious sound design, ethereal atmospheres, and cascading metallic percussions. These elements are delicately crafted with artistic finesse, set against a backdrop of expansive dub textures. At times, the music takes unforeseen turns, as melancholic chords skitter and meander through a digital haze, evoking an atmosphere of introspection and emotion. The ten compositions are accompanied by graphic notations informed by the album’s sonic and acoustic codes.

Percussionist extraordinaire Valentina Magaletti recorded live at Colourful Storm's showcase at Cafe Oto in 2021. Intricate, textural longform percussion pieces comprised of traditional drums, found objects, voice and electroacoustics conjured to hypnotic effect. A rare solo recording, following collaborations with Laila Sakini, Yves Chaudouët, Marlene Ribeiro and outings for Blume and Takuroku.

On their third album Constant Connection, West Australian-based Erasers create hypnotic compositions of synth,
guitar and voice, evoking the vast expanse of their native landscape and the shrouded emotions behid the senses.
Comprising of vocalist, synth player Rebecca Orchard and Rupert Thomas on guitar and synths, Erasers have
developed their earthly kosmische music into an open language based on drone, variation in repetition and minimal
song stuctures. Based in Perth, regarded one of the most isolated cities in the world, Orchard and Thomas’s music
has brewed in the city’s vibrant DIY/Outsider community and evolved into a meditation on landscape, power, the
shadow-world of human emotions and stream of consciousness. Constant Connection, with its waves of sound and
chant-like vocals evokes a trance that suggests an infinity just beyond the senses.
At the heart of each Erasers composition is the interplay between the instrumentation, played with stoic restraint and
recorded directly with minimal effects and the transcendental states induced in the listener. It’s a magic that is
performed in plain sight and all the more powerful for it. The recognisable vibrato of Fender Rhodes keyboards and
simple drum machine loops, the subtle strands of analog synth melodies that snake in and out of the ear, above all
the towering encantations of Rebecca Orchard’s undeniably Australian-accented hymns; all of this is presented with
minimal ostentation and yet it instantly engenders a dream state, hints at an infinity beyond the material.
Shades of John Cale’s 70s work with Nico, early 70s German synthesists Kluster and even fellow Australians
Fabulous Diamonds can be seen as stylistic touchstones for Constant Connection. Where Nico hinted at the
macabre and gothic, Rebecca Orchard’s similarly gliding vocal is more zoned in to a kind of oceanic openness, with
words becoming chants and spells that suggested themselves to the singer during recording sessions. It’s this
hidden hand of improvisatory, automatic writing that lends a sense of expanse to the music. On opener I
Understand, while the lyrics might hint at discontent the emotional spectrum it opens up is far more rich and
complex, as layered as the waves of droning chords that are the bedrock of each Erasers track. The title track talks
of flow, continuum and balance, the protagonist in the song seemingly weightless, gently pulled through a walking
reality that borders on dream. In Erasers’ world, it seems, the borders between reality and dream, consciousness
and sub-consciousness are blurred and eroded.
On Constant Connection, Erasers’ music might be deeply evocative of landscape but it’s never clear which one. The
vast, open terrain that surrounds Perth is dusty, burned by the sun into desert and Constant Connection feels like
the product of the heat and relative isolation, the altered states these elements can create. But it’s these altered
states of mind that appear to be the real landscape described by Erasers. It’s a landscape that’s hazy, in-and-out of
focus, with emotional undertows pushing and pulling you into a weightlessness. On album closer Easy To See the
band dispense with percussion all together, field recordings of the water at the edge of their native city ushering in
two duetting synths. Orchard’s vocal undulates with the flow, viewing both the geographical and psychological
landscape from the perspective of a consciousness not bound by bodies and from a timescale measured in
millennia. The album ends as it begins, with field recordings of the real world that the music seeps out from,
temporarily, before regressing back into the other realm it feels like it belongs to.
Between these two recorded hints of reality, Erasers manifest a deeply sensual dreamscape that constantly feels
like it’s dissolving at its seams. A desert psychedelia emanating from a real world that might not be that real in the
first place.

Garçon Voyage is the first single in French from Courrier Sud's upcoming EP on Délicieuse Records. The song paints a fresco of that special and unsettling moment at the beginning of a relationship when one of the two falls in love, but isn't sure if they'll be loved in return. Its rhythm is heady like a beating heart, set to a mix of minimalist synths, somewhere between Metronomy and Flavien Berger.

Release notes:

The five tracks that became Abbondanza all materialized from Summer to Winter of 2020, a time of unprecetended productivity in the home studio. Some of them developed from first time fiddlings on new synthesizers, some from unaccompanied jams on percussion instruments. I hope these tracks capture my naive fascination and joyful jamming I had while creating them.My Florentine friends of the Intro-Spettiva collective introduced me to the concept of "stalla" (stables) - their codeword for a proper party. At a particularly memorable Tuscan stalla in 2019, I got to know Edizioni Mondo head Francesco de Bellis and his amazing music. A year later, we listened to the first demos of this record in his damp basement studio close to Vatican City and here it is in all its abundance!
