Ho Chi Minh City based band, Saigon Soul Revival has been bringing alternative pre 1975 music from Saigon back to the stage since 2016 with their live performances. Honouring the original composers, singers and the golden era from which this music (Nh?c Vàng) came while applying new arrangements and interpretations of old Vietnamese songs. With tight grooves, psychedelic textures and a powerful unique sound, SSR has performed countless shows at a variety of venues across Vietnam. In 2017 they also took part in the nationally known "Ban Nh?c Vi?t" (known in the west as "The Band") TV format and and accompanied live the two release tours to the Saigon Supersound Compilation releases.
With support from *British Council's FAMLAB Fund initiative they started to create own compositions in the same vein for their debut album "H?a Âm X?a" that was produce by Jan Hagenkötter and released in 2019 on the Saigon Supersound Imprint. The album was recorded in Vietnam with additional guests like the famous (pre 1975) Vietnamese singer Mai L? Huy?n and the current popular Saigonese rapper "Blacka" (2022 finalist of Vietnam's most successful
TV show "Rap Vi?t") in order to combine the old sound with the new sound of Saigon. Some compositions include traditional Vietnamese instruments like the ?àn Nguy?t or the ?àn tranh & ?àn b?u which is played by famous traditionally-trained musician Th? H?i Ph??ng on the album. This fusion distinguishes it from the original recordings of the 60s and 70s and has resulted in a unique and contemporary sound. Their debut album "Hoa Am Xua" gained international success. Among many other media features It was nominated for the SONGLINES MUSIC AWARDS 2021 in the UK ! and received massive radio airplay and rotations on Radio FIP in France.
All members of the band are of Vietnamese background or have a strong connection to its culture and heritage through loved ones and their time spent in the country. Their music focuses on compositions that fuse Vietnamese lyrics and sounds with influences of western rock, soul, bolero, tango and other popular genres of this time period, most of which was banned after the war. This project strives to revive this beautiful musical heritage of Vietnam which represents an important cultural bridge between east and west.

Neben vielen anderen Medienberichten wurde es für die SONGLINES MUSIC AWARDS 2021 in Großbritannien nominiert und erhielt massives Radio Airplay u.a, von Iggy Pop in seiner BBC Radio Show sowie Rotationen auf Radio FIP in Frankreich.
Alle Mitglieder der Band sind vietnamesischer Herkunft oder haben eine starke Verbindung zur vietnamesischen Kultur und zum vietnamesischen Erbe durch geliebte Menschen und ihre im Land verbrachte Zeit. Descending out of the southern night sky through a turbulent cloud of dreams, memory, longing and psychedelia, Saigon Soul Revival's second full length represents the latest act in the group's resuscitation of the raw, heavy and subversive sounds of 1960s and 70s Saigon.
Roughly translated to "destiny", M?i L??ng Duyên is a journey through eight original compositions and three soul-stirring reinterpretations of Saigonese nh?c vàng or golden music: the soundtrack to a Saigon once thought lost to history and amnesia.
Driven by Western influences rock, bolero, soul, jazz and the rich heritage of Vietnamese ballads, M?i L??ng Duyên delivers a seamless blend of genres and traditional instrumentation (?àn Tranh, ?àn B?u & ?àn Nguy?t) with themes from across time and space.
In 2024 the title ?ÁM C??I NHÀ EM from their second studio album "M?i L??ng Duyên" is featured in the HBO Mini-Serie "The Symphatizer" (directed by Par Chan-Wook (Oldboy) / Robert Downey Junior producer and actor), which is based on the novel of the same name (Pulitzer Prize 2016) by Viet Thanh Nguyen.

Descending out of the southern night sky through a turbulent cloud of dreams, memory, longing and psychedelia, Saigon Soul Revival's second full length represents the latest act in the group's resuscitation of the raw, heavy and subversive sounds of 1960s and 70s Saigon.
Roughly translated to "destiny", M?i L??ng Duyên is a journey through eight original compositions and three soul-stirring reinterpretations of Saigonese nh?c vàng or golden music: the soundtrack to a Saigon once thought lost to history and amnesia.

Saigon Supersound is delighted to present the 3rd and final volume of its pre-1975 Southern Vietnamese music collection. A curated collection of music from Saigon during the 1960s and early 1970s. The music has been restored and remastered in order to present listeners with audio quality on par with its original quality upon release more than half a century ago.
The first few songs in this Volume are songs Vietnamese people used to call “Stimulus Music” or “Action Music”. These are songs that borrow vibrant melodies, inspired by the west, performed by the best representatives of this genre. In addition, this volume includes songs, famous in clubs both past and present like “N?u Anh V? Bên Em” by Mai Huong and “Hình ?nh Ngu?i Em Không Ð?i” by Thanh Lan.
Many believe that "Southern Golden Music" is just popular music, simply because it "pleases the listener". Volume 3 include melodies most Vietnamese might have considered “unpopular”, but popular with “golden music” lovers. Today, people often call “gold music” bolero music, because this is the most popular style found in this golden era of music. In this volume, Saigon Supersound have selected typical bolero songs like,“Hàn M?c T?” sang by Trúc Mai, as well as, “N?ng Chi?u” by Lê Tr?ng Nguy?n.
In addition to the variety of melodies, Volume 3 also shows the diversity of genres found in old Southern music by introducing songs that praise the homeland such as “Tình Reo Trên Sóng Lúa Vàng” by Thanh Lan, praising peace in “Xin Cho Tôi Gi?c M?ng Bình Yên” by Thanh Tuy?n, witty music in “C?u C? Lên Thành” by Connie Kim.
Volume 3 closes with the song “Xuân Mu?n” (Late Spring), performed by Hoàng Oanh. The song talks about the end of a lunar year - a cycle of heaven and earth, the end of sad stories and opens up new hopes for more positive things to come.
Finally, the face of the movie star Ki?u Chinh is chosen to grace the cover image of Saigon Supersound 3rd Volume. Although she may not have had any direct relations related to music, more than 50 years ago, Ki?u Chinh's image appeared many times on the covers of various music sheets. The image of Ki?u Chinh was chosen for the mix of Eastern and Western cultures present in her life and career that mirrored the music of that era. These songs, with melodies originating from Europe, the Americas and Africa have been an integral part of Vietnamese music since the 1960s.

Saigon Supersound wird fortgesetzt um weitere interessante Melodien aus einer musikalischen Ära zu präsentieren, die lange Zeit im Dunkeln lag. Nach dem interntional gut aufgenommenen Release von Volume 1 freuen wir uns sehr, tiefer zu diggen und interessante Musik einer kurzen, aber bedeutenden Periode in der Geschichte Vietnams zu teilen.
Diesmal beschränkt sich die Auswahl der Titel auf die Zeit zwischen 1964 - 1975, das sogenannte "Goldene Zeitalter", in dem es im Süden Vietnams unter schwierigen Umständen eine lebendige Popkultur gab.
Für uns ist diese Geschichte mit Vol. 1 noch nicht zu Ende erzählt. Einige musikalische Facetten sind noch nicht beleuchtet, auch aus Mangel an qualitativ, geeignetem Ausgangsmaterial zur Aufarbeitung/Restaurierung. In der Zwischenzeit und vor allem durch die große Resonanz, die wir mit Vol. 1 in Vietnam erhalten haben (wir konnten zur Veröffentlichung Shows in den drei größten Städten Vietnams organisieren) und auch auf Festivals, die wir in London und Paris gespielt haben, haben sich neue Türen geöffnet und uns die Möglichkeit gegeben, Vol. 2 so zu gestalten, wie wir es uns wünschen.

Diesmal beschränkt sich die Auswahl der Titel auf die Zeit zwischen 1964 - 1975, das sogenannte "Goldene Zeitalter", in dem es im Süden Vietnams unter schwierigen Umständen eine lebendige Popkultur gab.
Für uns ist diese Geschichte mit Vol. 1 noch nicht zu Ende erzählt. Einige musikalische Facetten sind noch nicht beleuchtet, auch aus Mangel an qualitativ, geeignetem Ausgangsmaterial zur Aufarbeitung/Restaurierung. In der Zwischenzeit und vor allem durch die große Resonanz, die wir mit Vol. 1 in Vietnam erhalten haben (wir konnten zur Veröffentlichung Shows in den drei größten Städten Vietnams organisieren) und auch auf Festivals, die wir in London und Paris gespielt haben, haben sich neue Türen geöffnet und uns die Möglichkeit gegeben, Vol. 2 so zu gestalten, wie wir es uns wünschen.

Ho Chi Minh City based band, Saigon Soul Revival has been bringing alternative pre 1975 music from Saigon back to the stage since 2016 with their live performances. Honouring the original composers, singers and the golden era from which this music (Nh?c Vàng) came while applying new arrangements and interpretations of old Vietnamese songs. With tight grooves, psychedelic textures and a powerful unique sound, SSR has performed countless shows at a variety of venues across Vietnam. In 2017 they also took part in the nationally known "Ban Nh?c Vi?t" (known in the west as "The Band") TV format and and accompanied live the two release tours to the Saigon Supersound Compilation releases.
With support from *British Council's FAMLAB Fund initiative they started to create own compositions in the same vein for their debut album "H?a Âm X?a" that was produce by Jan Hagenkötter and released in 2019 on the Saigon Supersound Imprint. The album was recorded in Vietnam with additional guests like the famous (pre 1975) Vietnamese singer Mai L? Huy?n and the current popular Saigonese rapper "Blacka" (2022 finalist of Vietnam's most successful
TV show "Rap Vi?t") in order to combine the old sound with the new sound of Saigon. Some compositions include traditional Vietnamese instruments like the ?àn Nguy?t or the ?àn tranh & ?àn b?u which is played by famous traditionally-trained musician Th? H?i Ph??ng on the album. This fusion distinguishes it from the original recordings of the 60s and 70s and has resulted in a unique and contemporary sound. Their debut album "Hoa Am Xua" gained international success. Among many other media features It was nominated for the SONGLINES MUSIC AWARDS 2021 in the UK ! and received massive radio airplay and rotations on Radio FIP in France.
All members of the band are of Vietnamese background or have a strong connection to its culture and heritage through loved ones and their time spent in the country. Their music focuses on compositions that fuse Vietnamese lyrics and sounds with influences of western rock, soul, bolero, tango and other popular genres of this time period, most of which was banned after the war. This project strives to revive this beautiful musical heritage of Vietnam which represents an important cultural bridge between east and west.

Was 2012 als Idee begann, wurde mit der Veröffentlichung von SAIGON SUPERSOUND Vol.1, zusammengestellt von Jan Hagenkötter, Realität. Eine Compilation über die Geschichte einer fast verlorenen musikalischen Ära in Vietnam, bestehend aus Tracks aus den Jahren 1965 bis 1975, der sogenannten "Goldenen Musik"-Periode im Süden Vietnams, in der sich - unter schwierigen Umständen - eine lebendige Popkultur entwickelt hatte. Diese Periode ist gekennzeichnet durch die Verschmelzung vietnamesischer Musik mit westlicher Popmusik Mit der Veröffentlichung von Saigon Supersound Vol. 1 im Mai 2017 wird die Geschichte dieser fast unbekannten Musik zum ersten Mal neu aufgelegt. Einige Stücke werden zum allerersten Mal wiederveröffentlicht, oder überhaupt auf Vinyl veröffentlicht seit sie ursprünglich auf R2R-Tonband oder 7" Vinyl veröffentlicht wurden. ??

What started as an idea in 2012 became reality with the release of SAIGON SUPERSOUND Vol.1, compiled by Jan Hagenkötter. A compilation about the story of a musical era in Vietnam that was almost lost, made of tracks from 1965 to 1975, the so-called "Golden Music" period in the south of Vietnam, where - under difficult circumstances - a lively pop culture had developed. This period is characterized by the fusion of Vietnamese music with western pop music. With the release of Saigon Supersound Vol. 1 in May 2017 the story of this nearly unknown music will be reissued for the first time. The compilation includes some tunes reissued for the very first time since they´ve been released originally. Some tunes even for the very first time on Vinyl since they ?ve been released originaly on reel 2 reel tape only.

Was 2012 als Idee begann, wurde mit der Veröffentlichung von SAIGON SUPERSOUND Vol.1, zusammengestellt von Jan Hagenkötter, Realität. Eine Compilation über die Geschichte einer fast verlorenen musikalischen Ära in Vietnam, bestehend aus Tracks aus den Jahren 1965 bis 1975, der sogenannten "Goldenen Musik"-Periode im Süden Vietnams, in der sich - unter schwierigen Umständen - eine lebendige Popkultur entwickelt hatte. Diese Periode ist gekennzeichnet durch die Verschmelzung vietnamesischer Musik mit westlicher Popmusik Mit der Veröffentlichung von Saigon Supersound Vol. 1 im Mai 2017 wird die Geschichte dieser fast unbekannten Musik zum ersten Mal neu aufgelegt. Einige Stücke werden zum allerersten Mal wiederveröffentlicht, oder überhaupt auf Vinyl veröffentlicht seit sie ursprünglich auf R2R-Tonband oder 7" Vinyl veröffentlicht wurden. ??

What started as an idea in 2012 became reality with the release of SAIGON SUPERSOUND Vol.1, compiled by Jan Hagenkötter. A compilation about the story of a musical era in Vietnam that was almost lost, made of tracks from 1965 to 1975, the so-called "Golden Music" period in the south of Vietnam, where - under difficult circumstances - a lively pop culture had developed. This period is characterized by the fusion of Vietnamese music with western pop music. With the release of Saigon Supersound Vol. 1 in May 2017 the story of this nearly unknown music will be reissued for the first time. The compilation includes some tunes reissued for the very first time since they´ve been released originally. Some tunes even for the very first time on Vinyl since they ?ve been released originaly on reel 2 reel tape only.

Saigon Supersound wird fortgesetzt um weitere interessante Melodien aus einer musikalischen Ära zu präsentieren, die lange Zeit im Dunkeln lag. Nach dem interntional gut aufgenommenen Release von Volume 1 freuen wir uns sehr, tiefer zu diggen und interessante Musik einer kurzen, aber bedeutenden Periode in der Geschichte Vietnams zu teilen.
Diesmal beschränkt sich die Auswahl der Titel auf die Zeit zwischen 1964 - 1975, das sogenannte "Goldene Zeitalter", in dem es im Süden Vietnams unter schwierigen Umständen eine lebendige Popkultur gab.
Für uns ist diese Geschichte mit Vol. 1 noch nicht zu Ende erzählt. Einige musikalische Facetten sind noch nicht beleuchtet, auch aus Mangel an qualitativ, geeignetem Ausgangsmaterial zur Aufarbeitung/Restaurierung. In der Zwischenzeit und vor allem durch die große Resonanz, die wir mit Vol. 1 in Vietnam erhalten haben (wir konnten zur Veröffentlichung Shows in den drei größten Städten Vietnams organisieren) und auch auf Festivals, die wir in London und Paris gespielt haben, haben sich neue Türen geöffnet und uns die Möglichkeit gegeben, Vol. 2 so zu gestalten, wie wir es uns wünschen.

We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records is thrilled and honored to announce the first ever official vinyl pressing of the soundtrack for Mamoru Oshii's critically acclaimed and all around legendary science fiction anime film GHOST IN THE SHELL (1995), adapted from Masamune Shirow's groundbreaking manga series of the same name.
Cut from the original master reels at Emil Berliner Studios (formerly the in-house recording department of renowned classical record label Deutsche Grammophon), the album comes as a LP accompanied by a bonus one-sided 7" housed in official Ghost in the Shell artwork sleeve with silver gilt printing and a Japanese obi, and contains extensive 24-page liner notes.
The haunting score is composed by Kenji Kawai, one of Japan's most celebrated soundtrack composers, alongside Joe Hisaishi and Ry?ichi Sakamoto, whose work includes Hideo Nakata's Ring (1998) and Ring 2 (1999), Death Note (2006), Hong Kong films Seven Swords by Tsui Hark (2005) and Ip Man by Wilson Yip (2008), and countless others. Kawai's compositions see ancient harmonies and percussions uncannily mesh with synthesized sounds of the modern world to convey a sumptuous balance between folklore tradition and futuristic outlook. For its iconic main theme "Making of Cyborg", Kawai had a choir chant a wedding song in ancient Japanese following Bulgarian folk harmonies, setting the standard for a timeless and unparalleled soundtrack that admirably echoes the film's musings on the nature of humanity in a technologically advanced world.
Ghost in the Shell is widely considered one of the best anime films of all time and its influence has been felt in the work of numerous movie directors, including James Cameron (Avatar), the Wachowskis (The Matrix), and Steven Spielberg (AI: Artificial Intelligence).

We Release Jazz is ecstatic (purrrr!) to announce the official reissue of Hiroshi Suzuki's glorious jazz-fusion-funk Holy Grail Cat (originally released in 1976), sourced from the original masters and available on limited edition 180 gram vinyl mastered at half speed for full audiophile sound, as well as on digipack CD. Both versions come with liner notes by Teruo Isono.
Cat was recorded in October 1975 at at Nippon Columbia Studio, while Hiroshi Suzuki was visiting his home country of Japan after moving to Las Vegas in 1971 to play with Buddy Rich and perfect his craft. Back on his old stomping grounds, the man known as Neko (Cat) immediately reunited with his dear friends for an epic two day session of groove magic. The chemistry was still intact. The skills and style had grown.
The result, Cat, is a smooth masterpiece, a deep and soulful affair where stunning trombone solos by Hiroshi Suzuki flirt with Takeru Muraoka's heavenly saxophone and the sensual rhythm section of Hiromasa Suzuki (keyboards), Kunimitsu Inaba (bass), and Akira Ishikawa (drums).
Celebrated in jazz collectors circles, in the lofi beat scene, and among music diggers around the world, Cat has become one of the most sought-after Japanese jazz albums of all time and, much like Ryo Fukui's Scenery, has fascinated old and young generations alike.

My studio is my shelter, I feel comfortable there, surrounded by wonderful inspiring machines. A small cosy room where ideas emerge, mature, morph, and solidify into their final shape. 'Studio' is the result of spending time in that space. The album's intention is simple: Presenting a beautiful personal musical journey. The creative process in itself matters to me, the interaction with my instruments, the accidental discoveries, the successful execution of a vision and anything in between.
Most of the tracks on this album got revised countless times, and then even more, once I knew in which context and order I wanted to arrange them. I have been living with my music for months now, listening, thinking, changing, diving deeper and deeper into each piece.
I love albums, they are a beautiful long-form format where each part has its place, a journey from the start till the end. Each piece has its own story, its own flavour and history.
Some of them have been with me since a while already. There is material which I created years ago for installations and music derived from previous audiovisual works, all completely ripped apart and rearranged multiple times. During their creation my pieces often turn into something completely different, they repeatedly shift from one state to another until they become solid. What I consider a core element at the beginning might be later discarded completely, and a little detail in the background might become the essence.
Many explorations ended in the trash bin before the results had a chance to be part of 'Studio'. Things did not fall into place, did not feel right.
Other compositions had to fill the void instead, some created quickly in a rush of inspiration, some slowly, shy, questioning their significance. This album did not come into existence in a hurry, it took as long as it needed. I used the time to walk around my creations, to listen to them from the distance, physically, mentally, with friends, in all kinds of different contexts. I tried to understand what I just did. I started to see patterns, hidden motifs, things that were buried in between too many layers of sound. What is essential? What is ornament? I reduced, rearranged, added again.
The closer I got to the final state of 'Studio' the more clarity I found. The inherent doubts and the nagging voices from the inside got more quiet, and a sense of achievement started to manifest itself. More and more details just fell into place. And now it is done. After making electronic music since almost thirty years I don't care anymore about genres, about how to label things. It is music, my own personal music, and that's it. Call it electronica if you wish.
Process Notes
The music on this album has been constructed in Ableton Live. Most of the sounds have been created with my collection of beloved hardware synthesisers and effects, often further processed until something completely different did emerge. Sometimes I spend days in the studio just recording sounds or creating new presets, without already having a composition in mind. A few selected musical instruments contributed significantly to the palette of this album; a New England Digital Synclavier II, which also served as inspiration for the artwork, a Sequential Prophet VS, which is present on all Monolake albums since 1996, a Yamaha SY77, Linn Drum, and the Oberheim Xpander. And then there is Operator in Ableton Live, which I developed in 2004 and still love to use, and a lot of the other effects and instruments in the software. And of course my Granulator III instrument, and the PitchLoop89 audio effect. A composition of various lichen photographs, and a computational noise field that cuts rivers into the structure, where the inner artwork of the album shines through: The inside of the CD package and the gatefold vinyl cover shows a non-existing musical instrument, based on the user interface of the Synclavier II. I've always been fond of its futuristic button matrix with red LEDs, which conjures a sense of nostalgia for early computer systems. But I wanted more than just a photograph of it. Instead, I created a collage that not only consists of its existing controls but also integrated additional features it never possessed, though it might have in a subsequent iteration. In essence, I crafted a vision of a future that never materialized.
Geeky detail: When a Synclavier II is turned on, and the connected mainframe computer did not boot yet, the LEDs in the buttons light up in random patterns. The imaginary version of it does the same.

Some of them have been with me since a while already. There is material which I created years ago for installations and music derived from previous audiovisual works, all completely ripped apart and rearranged multiple times. During their creation my pieces often turn into something completely different, they repeatedly shift from one state to another until they become solid. What I consider a core element at the beginning might be later discarded completely, and a little detail in the background might become the essence.
Many explorations ended in the trash bin before the results had a chance to be part of 'Studio'. Things did not fall into place, did not feel right.
Other compositions had to fill the void instead, some created quickly in a rush of inspiration, some slowly, shy, questioning their significance. This album did not come into existence in a hurry, it took as long as it needed. I used the time to walk around my creations, to listen to them from the distance, physically, mentally, with friends, in all kinds of different contexts. I tried to understand what I just did. I started to see patterns, hidden motifs, things that were buried in between too many layers of sound. What is essential? What is ornament? I reduced, rearranged, added again.
The closer I got to the final state of 'Studio' the more clarity I found. The inherent doubts and the nagging voices from the inside got more quiet, and a sense of achievement started to manifest itself. More and more details just fell into place. And now it is done. After making electronic music since almost thirty years I don't care anymore about genres, about how to label things. It is music, my own personal music, and that's it. Call it electronica if you wish.

And then there is Operator in Ableton Live, which I developed in 2004 and still love to use, and a lot of the other effects and instruments in the software. And of course my Granulator III instrument, and the PitchLoop89 audio effect. The Green Album heralded a brave new world for the UK musical landscape (DJ Mag would later decry that the album "rewrote the rule book for rave"). Brothers Paul and Phil Hartnoll eschewed formulas and clichés, choosing to explore wider textures, rhythms and stranger mind spaces within dance music. Their resulting album would enjoy both chart success and an enduring legacy, influencing and inspiring artists from Björk to Bicep, with the Hartnoll brothers going on to collaborate with artists as diverse as Madonna, Ennio Morricone, Kraftwerk, Sleaford Mods and Professor Brian Cox.
33 years since its original release the album is revisited, from black vinyl , limited colored vinyl and CD editions (long out of print), to special Record Store Day double Splatter Lp. In the digital space 'Tonight In Belfast' will be lauched on February 2nd, :a reworking of the band's seminal track 'Belfast', remixed by David Holmes and re-interpolated with new lyrics and vocal by acclaimed street poet Mike Garry.

WRWTFWW & Palto Flats Records are ecstatic to announce the highly-anticipated reissue of Japanese percussionist Midori Takada's sought after and timeless ambient / minimal album "Through The Looking Glass", originally released in 1983 by RCA Japan.
Considered a Holy Grail of Japanese music by many, "Through The Looking Glass" is Midori Takada's first solo endeavor, a captivating four-song suite capturing her deep quests into traditional African and Asian percussive language and exploring contemplative ambient sounds with an admirably precise use of marimba. The result is alternatively ethereal and vibrant, always precise and mesmerizing, and makes for an atmospheric masterpiece and an unparalleled sonic and spiritual experience.
The fully licensed reissue is available as a single 33rpm LP and a limited 45rpm DLP, both cut directly from the original studio reels (AAA), at Emil Berliner (formerly the in-house recording department of renowned classical record label Deutsche Grammophon) for the 45rpm DLP, and at the equally famous Frankfurter SST Studio for the LP. It is also available in CD format for the first time. All versions come with extensive liner notes.

Midori Takada is a composer, multi percussionist, and theater artist renowned in Japanese vanguard circles. She will tour Europe this year.
Midori released two solo albums: "Through The Looking Glass" and "Tree Of Life" and wrote music for Tadashi Suzuki's theater plays. Her hypnotic, minimalist music is based in the concept of coherence between sound and the human body. She performs solo on marimba and other percussion instruments.
She debuted on the scene of Berlin Philharmonic, performing with the RIAS Symphonie-Orchester Berlin just after graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1974. She continued her career with solo concerts in Japan and abroad.
In the 1980s Midori began to explore the traditional music of Asia and Africa. Her fascination resulted in joint projects with Kakraba Lobi from Ghana, Lamine Konte from Senegal, Farafina Band from Burkina Faso, and Korean musicians: zither player Chi Seong-Ja, flute player Won-Il, and saxophone player Kang Tae-Hwan. She also led Mkwaju Ensemble's innovative percussion project and still performs with free-jazz band Ton-Klami with Kang Tae-Hwan and jazz pianist Masahiko Satoh.
In the past 20 years, Midori Takada spent more time in theaters than in concert halls - composing and performing live music for theater. She regularly works with Tadashi Suzuki and his Suzuki Company of Toga on their adaptations of "Electra" and "King Lear".
Takada's compositions have a remarkable way of affecting the imagination. Her minimalist, contemplative music is filled with the concept of infinity and reminds us of a moon voyage, falling stars, a journey into the ocean, or a walk in the garden. The trans melodies, initially simple, begin to loop and splinter, their rhythm breaking and thickening, slowly drawing the listener into another reality.

Already their debut maxi "Soopertrack" on Border Community from 2006, which can still be found in many DJ cases, but also the "Titelheld EP" (2006) and the album "Schöne Neue Extrawelt" from the year 2008, which belong to the best-selling releases on Cocoon recordings, have also ultimately rocketed the two Hamburg residents Arne Schaffhausen and Wayan Raabe - famous for their excessive live performances - to the Mount Olympus of the most style-forming Techno protagonists within the last ten years. "We don't want cowardly Zeitgeist Techno. We want to be courageous and dare new sounds and melodies. Sunrise scenarios, energy, revolution and 'Kaputtheit' - these are all parts of the Extrawelt", the two musicians once said, and this artistic credo applies for the long-awaited second Extrawelt album, too. "We took our time and have collected tracks that have particularly touched us, no matter whether they are club-compatible or not. Besides that, we didn't want to repeat ourselves but create a unique second album that's stands for itself." Without doubt, the two have succeeded in this!
Writing about the single tracks here would not make much sense. Just a few words: Every single track is unique! And still, there is definitely inside what the label promises: Extrawelt. The variety and, at the same time, the unity of the most different sounds, the caring arrangement and the fascination for details can only be described as a great sonic performance! This is again that valiant and brave reaching into the well-filled sonic lucky bag of modern electronic music that makes "In Aufruhr" so much more than just dancefloor entertainment. The spectrum of musical influences has again extended and the most different styles of electronic music are connecting seamlessly with the Extrawelt spirit. Here, the sonic Zeitgeist is not the determining variable for the music - what really counts is the creation of nothing more and nothing less than a new world, by the means of a never-exhausting power of acoustic imagination which shows new facets, even after the thousandth time of listening pleasure. One should be careful with the use of superlatives, but this is exactly how masterpieces are sounding!

However, don't panic even if the aesthetics of the debut album of the two Hamburg-born artists Arne Schaffhausen and Wayan Raabe is affected by the attentive observation of electronic dance music over the last fifteen years, the "Schöne Neue Extrawelt" is above all this: Premium Techno 2008! The Hamburg-based producer team has been unmistakably imprinting the last three years' club sound with widely noticed releases on Border Community ("Sooper Track"), Traum Schallplatten ("Doch Doch") and Cocoon Recordings ("Titelheld") as well as with remixes for Gregor Tresher, Minilogue or Alexander Kowalski - last but not least due to an excellent live presence, that resulted in the second rank in the Groove Live Act Charts, even still without the accompanying long-player.
The work on "Schöne Neue Extrawelt" started more than two years ago for Schaffhausen and Raabe. "The initial idea was to present an album covering all styles of electronic music between Ambient, Breakbeats, and Techno. When we had 25 tracks for the album ready, we had to realize that this approach did not work for us. Insofar, we finally decided to use the 4/4 bass drum in all tracks except in the little intermezzo "Kurt Curtain". We have tested all tracks live over the last three months and constantly re-interpreted them. So, the 'danceability' is clearly in our focus, but the sound spectrum and the dramaturgy of the titles should not be solely functioning in the club. Our intention was definitely not to deliver an album full of superficial peak time hits."
Those twelve tracks on "Schöne Neue Extrawelt", all unreleased, are therefore primarily representing a pleasurable 'in-between', the organic development of hypnotically compressed dance music that is more than "just" Minimal Techno, reduced Trance or electronic listening sounds of the Warp era - even all those elements have left their marks. From the richly decorated musical-clock-intro "One Tree Hill" via the stereo singing bowl of "Trümmerfeld" to the Asian-sounding creaking of "Daten Raten", Extrawelt celebrate a vision of futuristic melancholy with organic detail richness, which is permanently in motion but is nevertheless seeming to be well-balanced. However, in the Extrawelt universe, one gets along quite well with antagonisms. "We have always been polarizing, not only in the Techno scene but also in the Trance scene. Because in the end, "Schöne Neue Extrawelt" - freely adapted from Aldous Huxley - is now not only a big neon-colored future but is likewise positioned in the often-disillusioning grey of the here and now."
