Saigon Supersound is delighted to present the 3rd and final volume of its pre-1975 Southern Vietnamese music collection. A curated collection of music from Saigon during the 1960s and early 1970s. The music has been restored and remastered in order to present listeners with audio quality on par with its original quality upon release more than half a century ago.
The first few songs in this Volume are songs Vietnamese people used to call “Stimulus Music” or “Action Music”. These are songs that borrow vibrant melodies, inspired by the west, performed by the best representatives of this genre. In addition, this volume includes songs, famous in clubs both past and present like “N?u Anh V? Bên Em” by Mai Huong and “Hình ?nh Ngu?i Em Không Ð?i” by Thanh Lan.
Many believe that "Southern Golden Music" is just popular music, simply because it "pleases the listener". Volume 3 include melodies most Vietnamese might have considered “unpopular”, but popular with “golden music” lovers. Today, people often call “gold music” bolero music, because this is the most popular style found in this golden era of music. In this volume, Saigon Supersound have selected typical bolero songs like,“Hàn M?c T?” sang by Trúc Mai, as well as, “N?ng Chi?u” by Lê Tr?ng Nguy?n.
In addition to the variety of melodies, Volume 3 also shows the diversity of genres found in old Southern music by introducing songs that praise the homeland such as “Tình Reo Trên Sóng Lúa Vàng” by Thanh Lan, praising peace in “Xin Cho Tôi Gi?c M?ng Bình Yên” by Thanh Tuy?n, witty music in “C?u C? Lên Thành” by Connie Kim.
Volume 3 closes with the song “Xuân Mu?n” (Late Spring), performed by Hoàng Oanh. The song talks about the end of a lunar year - a cycle of heaven and earth, the end of sad stories and opens up new hopes for more positive things to come.
Finally, the face of the movie star Ki?u Chinh is chosen to grace the cover image of Saigon Supersound 3rd Volume. Although she may not have had any direct relations related to music, more than 50 years ago, Ki?u Chinh's image appeared many times on the covers of various music sheets. The image of Ki?u Chinh was chosen for the mix of Eastern and Western cultures present in her life and career that mirrored the music of that era. These songs, with melodies originating from Europe, the Americas and Africa have been an integral part of Vietnamese music since the 1960s.

Saigon Supersound is delighted to present the 3rd and final volume of its pre-1975 Southern Vietnamese music collection. A curated collection of music from Saigon during the 1960s and early 1970s. Following international tours across Australia, Southeast Asia, China and Europe, as well as a live session for KEXP, Saigon Soul Revival return with their new album “Ch?n Ta V?” (“The Place We Return To”).
Their single “Ai Th?t Lòng Yêu Ai” was recently included in the permanent exhibition of the Philharmonie de Paris, underlining the band’s growing cultural impact.
Produced by Jan Hagenkötter and recorded in Ho Chi Minh City, the album blends Vietnamese musical heritage with global influences. Singer and songwriter Nguy?n Anh Minh describes it as a journey of finding one’s way back home through love, loss and self-discovery.
Building on 2024’s “M?i Luong Duyên,” the album expands its sound with traditional instruments such as the T’rung and Sáo Trúc. Guest appearances include Vietnamese multi-instrumentalist Ðinh Nh?t Minh and renowned jazz saxophonist Tr?n M?nh Tu?n, featured on “O Kìa, Em Oi.” Longtime collaborator Nguy?n Th? H?i Phu?ng returns on Ðàn Tranh and Ðàn B?u, while guitarist Indy Laville plays Ðàn Nguy?t on selected tracks.
Tracks like “Lý Qua Dub” and “Khúc Tình Yên Vui” highlight connections between Vietnamese and regional musical traditions, while “Chachacha Ngây Tho” reflects Latin influences long embraced in Vietnam.
Recorded and mixed fully analog at In The Box Studios in Saigon by engineer Benjamin James, the album embodies the band’s self-described style: “Global Pop” rooted in Vietnamese culture and open to the world.
The band also contributed music to the upcoming James Bond game “007 First Light” and the documentary “Y Vân: The Lost Sounds of Saigon.”

Although she may not have had any direct relations related to music, more than 50 years ago, Ki?u Chinh's image appeared many times on the covers of various music sheets. The image of Ki?u Chinh was chosen for the mix of Eastern and Western cultures present in her life and career that mirrored the music of that era. These songs, with melodies originating from Europe, the Americas and Africa have been an integral part of Vietnamese music since the 1960s.

Saigon Supersound is delighted to present the 3rd and final volume of its pre-1975 Southern Vietnamese music collection. A curated collection of music from Saigon during the 1960s and early 1970s. The music has been restored and remastered in order to present listeners with audio quality on par with its original quality upon release more than half a century ago.
The first few songs in this Volume are songs Vietnamese people used to call “Stimulus Music” or “Action Music”. These are songs that borrow vibrant melodies, inspired by the west, performed by the best representatives of this genre. In addition, this volume includes songs, famous in clubs both past and present like “N?u Anh V? Bên Em” by Mai Huong and “Hình ?nh Ngu?i Em Không Ð?i” by Thanh Lan.
Many believe that "Southern Golden Music" is just popular music, simply because it "pleases the listener". Volume 3 include melodies most Vietnamese might have considered “unpopular”, but popular with “golden music” lovers. Today, people often call “gold music” bolero music, because this is the most popular style found in this golden era of music. In this volume, Saigon Supersound have selected typical bolero songs like,“Hàn M?c T?” sang by Trúc Mai, as well as, “N?ng Chi?u” by Lê Tr?ng Nguy?n.

In der Zwischenzeit und vor allem durch die große Resonanz, die wir mit Vol. 1 in Vietnam erhalten haben (wir konnten zur Veröffentlichung Shows in den drei größten Städten Vietnams organisieren) und auch auf Festivals, die wir in London und Paris gespielt haben, haben sich neue Türen geöffnet und uns die Möglichkeit gegeben, Vol. 2 so zu gestalten, wie wir es uns wünschen.

Ho Chi Minh City based band, Saigon Soul Revival has been bringing alternative pre 1975 music from Saigon back to the stage since 2016 with their live performances. Honouring the original composers, singers and the golden era from which this music (Nh?c Vàng) came while applying new arrangements and interpretations of old Vietnamese songs. With tight grooves, psychedelic textures and a powerful unique sound, SSR has performed countless shows at a variety of venues across Vietnam. In 2017 they also took part in the nationally known "Ban Nh?c Vi?t" (known in the west as "The Band") TV format and and accompanied live the two release tours to the Saigon Supersound Compilation releases.
With support from *British Council's FAMLAB Fund initiative they started to create own compositions in the same vein for their debut album "H?a Âm X?a" that was produce by Jan Hagenkötter and released in 2019 on the Saigon Supersound Imprint. The album was recorded in Vietnam with additional guests like the famous (pre 1975) Vietnamese singer Mai L? Huy?n and the current popular Saigonese rapper "Blacka" (2022 finalist of Vietnam's most successful
TV show "Rap Vi?t") in order to combine the old sound with the new sound of Saigon. Some compositions include traditional Vietnamese instruments like the ?àn Nguy?t or the ?àn tranh & ?àn b?u which is played by famous traditionally-trained musician Th? H?i Ph??ng on the album. This fusion distinguishes it from the original recordings of the 60s and 70s and has resulted in a unique and contemporary sound. Their debut album "Hoa Am Xua" gained international success. Among many other media features It was nominated for the SONGLINES MUSIC AWARDS 2021 in the UK ! and received massive radio airplay and rotations on Radio FIP in France.
All members of the band are of Vietnamese background or have a strong connection to its culture and heritage through loved ones and their time spent in the country. Their music focuses on compositions that fuse Vietnamese lyrics and sounds with influences of western rock, soul, bolero, tango and other popular genres of this time period, most of which was banned after the war. This project strives to revive this beautiful musical heritage of Vietnam which represents an important cultural bridge between east and west.

Die in Ho-Chi-Minh-Stadt ansässige Band Saigon Soul Revival bringt seit 2016 mit ihren Live-Auftritten die alternative Musik aus Saigon vor 1975 zurück auf die Bühne. Sie ehren die ursprünglichen Komponisten, Sänger und die goldene Ära, aus der diese Musik (Nh?c Vàng) stammt, während sie neue Arrangements und Interpretationen alter vietnamesischer Lieder verwenden. Mit knackigen Grooves, psychedelischen Texturen und einem kraftvollen, einzigartigen Sound hat SSR unzählige Auftritte an verschiedenen Veranstaltungsorten in ganz Vietnam absolviert. Im Jahr 2017 nahmen sie auch an dem landesweit bekannten TV-Format "Ban Nh?c Vi?t" (im Westen als "The Band" bekannt) teil und begleiteten live die beiden Release-Touren zu den Saigon Supersound Compilation-Veröffentlichungen.
Mit Unterstützung der *British Council's FAMLAB Fund Initiative begannen sie, eigene Kompositionen in der gleichen Art und Weise für ihr Debütalbum "H?a Âm X?a" zu kreieren, das von Jan Hagenkötter produziert und 2019 auf dem Saigon Supersound Imprint veröffentlicht wurde. Das Album wurde in Vietnam aufgenommen, mit zusätzlichen Gästen wie der berühmten (vor 1975) vietnamesischen Sängerin Mai L? Huy?n und dem aktuell sehr populären saigonesischen Rapper "Blacka" (2022 Finalist von Vietnams erfolgreichster
TV-Show "Rap Vi?t"), um den alten Sound mit dem neuen Sound von Saigon zu verbinden. Einige Kompositionen enthalten traditionelle vietnamesische Instrumente wie die ?àn Nguy?t oder die ?àn Tranh & ?àn B?u, die von demr berühmten, traditionell ausgebildeten Musiker Th? H?i Ph??ng auf dem Album gespielt wird. Diese Fusion unterscheidet es von den Originalaufnahmen der 60er und 70er Jahre und hat zu einem einzigartigen und zeitgenössischen Sound geführt. Ihr Debütalbum "Hoa Am Xua" ist ein internationaler Erfolg. Neben vielen anderen Medienberichten wurde es für die SONGLINES MUSIC AWARDS 2021 in Großbritannien nominiert und erhielt massives Radio Airplay u.a, von Iggy Pop in seiner BBC Radio Show sowie Rotationen auf Radio FIP in Frankreich.
Alle Mitglieder der Band sind vietnamesischer Herkunft oder haben eine starke Verbindung zur vietnamesischen Kultur und zum vietnamesischen Erbe durch geliebte Menschen und ihre im Land verbrachte Zeit. Ihre Musik konzentriert sich auf Kompositionen, die vietnamesische Texte und Klänge mit Einflüssen von westlichem Rock, Soul, Bolero, Tango und anderen populären Genres dieser Zeit verbinden, von denen die meisten nach dem Krieg verboten wurden. Mit diesem Projekt soll dieses wunderschöne musikalische Erbe Vietnams, das eine wichtige kulturelle Brücke zwischen Ost und West darstellt, wiederbelebt werden.

A compilation about the story of a musical era in Vietnam that was almost lost, made of tracks from 1965 to 1975, the so-called "Golden Music" period in the south of Vietnam, where - under difficult circumstances - a lively pop culture had developed. This period is characterized by the fusion of Vietnamese music with western pop music. With the release of Saigon Supersound Vol. 1 in May 2017 the story of this nearly unknown music will be reissued for the first time. The compilation includes some tunes reissued for the very first time since they´ve been released originally. Some tunes even for the very first time on Vinyl since they ?ve been released originaly on reel 2 reel tape only.

Saigon Supersound wird fortgesetzt um weitere interessante Melodien aus einer musikalischen Ära zu präsentieren, die lange Zeit im Dunkeln lag. Nach dem interntional gut aufgenommenen Release von Volume 1 freuen wir uns sehr, tiefer zu diggen und interessante Musik einer kurzen, aber bedeutenden Periode in der Geschichte Vietnams zu teilen.
Diesmal beschränkt sich die Auswahl der Titel auf die Zeit zwischen 1964 - 1975, das sogenannte "Goldene Zeitalter", in dem es im Süden Vietnams unter schwierigen Umständen eine lebendige Popkultur gab.
Für uns ist diese Geschichte mit Vol. 1 noch nicht zu Ende erzählt. Einige musikalische Facetten sind noch nicht beleuchtet, auch aus Mangel an qualitativ, geeignetem Ausgangsmaterial zur Aufarbeitung/Restaurierung. In der Zwischenzeit und vor allem durch die große Resonanz, die wir mit Vol. 1 in Vietnam erhalten haben (wir konnten zur Veröffentlichung Shows in den drei größten Städten Vietnams organisieren) und auch auf Festivals, die wir in London und Paris gespielt haben, haben sich neue Türen geöffnet und uns die Möglichkeit gegeben, Vol. 2 so zu gestalten, wie wir es uns wünschen.

Ho Chi Minh City based band, Saigon Soul Revival has been bringing alternative pre 1975 music from Saigon back to the stage since 2016 with their live performances. Honouring the original composers, singers and the golden era from which this music (Nh?c Vàng) came while applying new arrangements and interpretations of old Vietnamese songs. With tight grooves, psychedelic textures and a powerful unique sound, SSR has performed countless shows at a variety of venues across Vietnam. In 2017 they also took part in the nationally known "Ban Nh?c Vi?t" (known in the west as "The Band") TV format and and accompanied live the two release tours to the Saigon Supersound Compilation releases.
With support from *British Council's FAMLAB Fund initiative they started to create own compositions in the same vein for their debut album "H?a Âm X?a" that was produce by Jan Hagenkötter and released in 2019 on the Saigon Supersound Imprint. The album was recorded in Vietnam with additional guests like the famous (pre 1975) Vietnamese singer Mai L? Huy?n and the current popular Saigonese rapper "Blacka" (2022 finalist of Vietnam's most successful
TV show "Rap Vi?t") in order to combine the old sound with the new sound of Saigon. Some compositions include traditional Vietnamese instruments like the ?àn Nguy?t or the ?àn tranh & ?àn b?u which is played by famous traditionally-trained musician Th? H?i Ph??ng on the album. This fusion distinguishes it from the original recordings of the 60s and 70s and has resulted in a unique and contemporary sound. Their debut album "Hoa Am Xua" gained international success. Among many other media features It was nominated for the SONGLINES MUSIC AWARDS 2021 in the UK ! and received massive radio airplay and rotations on Radio FIP in France.
All members of the band are of Vietnamese background or have a strong connection to its culture and heritage through loved ones and their time spent in the country. Their music focuses on compositions that fuse Vietnamese lyrics and sounds with influences of western rock, soul, bolero, tango and other popular genres of this time period, most of which was banned after the war. This project strives to revive this beautiful musical heritage of Vietnam which represents an important cultural bridge between east and west.

Die in Ho-Chi-Minh-Stadt ansässige Band Saigon Soul Revival bringt seit 2016 mit ihren Live-Auftritten die alternative Musik aus Saigon vor 1975 zurück auf die Bühne. Sie ehren die ursprünglichen Komponisten, Sänger und die goldene Ära, aus der diese Musik (Nh?c Vàng) stammt, während sie neue Arrangements und Interpretationen alter vietnamesischer Lieder verwenden. Mit knackigen Grooves, psychedelischen Texturen und einem kraftvollen, einzigartigen Sound hat SSR unzählige Auftritte an verschiedenen Veranstaltungsorten in ganz Vietnam absolviert. Im Jahr 2017 nahmen sie auch an dem landesweit bekannten TV-Format "Ban Nh?c Vi?t" (im Westen als "The Band" bekannt) teil und begleiteten live die beiden Release-Touren zu den Saigon Supersound Compilation-Veröffentlichungen.
Mit Unterstützung der *British Council's FAMLAB Fund Initiative begannen sie, eigene Kompositionen in der gleichen Art und Weise für ihr Debütalbum "H?a Âm X?a" zu kreieren, das von Jan Hagenkötter produziert und 2019 auf dem Saigon Supersound Imprint veröffentlicht wurde. Das Album wurde in Vietnam aufgenommen, mit zusätzlichen Gästen wie der berühmten (vor 1975) vietnamesischen Sängerin Mai L? Huy?n und dem aktuell sehr populären saigonesischen Rapper "Blacka" (2022 Finalist von Vietnams erfolgreichster
TV-Show "Rap Vi?t"), um den alten Sound mit dem neuen Sound von Saigon zu verbinden. Einige Kompositionen enthalten traditionelle vietnamesische Instrumente wie die ?àn Nguy?t oder die ?àn Tranh & ?àn B?u, die von demr berühmten, traditionell ausgebildeten Musiker Th? H?i Ph??ng auf dem Album gespielt wird. Diese Fusion unterscheidet es von den Originalaufnahmen der 60er und 70er Jahre und hat zu einem einzigartigen und zeitgenössischen Sound geführt. Ihr Debütalbum "Hoa Am Xua" ist ein internationaler Erfolg. Neben vielen anderen Medienberichten wurde es für die SONGLINES MUSIC AWARDS 2021 in Großbritannien nominiert und erhielt massives Radio Airplay u.a, von Iggy Pop in seiner BBC Radio Show sowie Rotationen auf Radio FIP in Frankreich.
Alle Mitglieder der Band sind vietnamesischer Herkunft oder haben eine starke Verbindung zur vietnamesischen Kultur und zum vietnamesischen Erbe durch geliebte Menschen und ihre im Land verbrachte Zeit. Ihre Musik konzentriert sich auf Kompositionen, die vietnamesische Texte und Klänge mit Einflüssen von westlichem Rock, Soul, Bolero, Tango und anderen populären Genres dieser Zeit verbinden, von denen die meisten nach dem Krieg verboten wurden. Ho Chi Minh City based band, Saigon Soul Revival has been bringing alternative pre 1975 music from Saigon back to the stage since 2016 with their live performances. Honouring the original composers, singers and the golden era from which this music (Nh?c Vàng) came while applying new arrangements and interpretations of old Vietnamese songs. With tight grooves, psychedelic textures and a powerful unique sound, SSR has performed countless shows at a variety of venues across Vietnam. In 2017 they also took part in the nationally known "Ban Nh?c Vi?t" (known in the west as "The Band") TV format and and accompanied live the two release tours to the Saigon Supersound Compilation releases.
With support from *British Council's FAMLAB Fund initiative they started to create own compositions in the same vein for their debut album "H?a Âm X?a" that was produce by Jan Hagenkötter and released in 2019 on the Saigon Supersound Imprint. The album was recorded in Vietnam with additional guests like the famous (pre 1975) Vietnamese singer Mai L? Huy?n and the current popular Saigonese rapper "Blacka" (2022 finalist of Vietnam's most successful
TV show "Rap Vi?t") in order to combine the old sound with the new sound of Saigon. Some compositions include traditional Vietnamese instruments like the ?àn Nguy?t or the ?àn tranh & ?àn b?u which is played by famous traditionally-trained musician Th? H?i Ph??ng on the album. This fusion distinguishes it from the original recordings of the 60s and 70s and has resulted in a unique and contemporary sound. Their debut album "Hoa Am Xua" gained international success. Among many other media features It was nominated for the SONGLINES MUSIC AWARDS 2021 in the UK ! and received massive radio airplay and rotations on Radio FIP in France.
All members of the band are of Vietnamese background or have a strong connection to its culture and heritage through loved ones and their time spent in the country. Their music focuses on compositions that fuse Vietnamese lyrics and sounds with influences of western rock, soul, bolero, tango and other popular genres of this time period, most of which was banned after the war. This project strives to revive this beautiful musical heritage of Vietnam which represents an important cultural bridge between east and west.

Ladymonix delivers an uncompromising scat dub of Be Loved - a niche and signature style to emerge from the Detroit underground that Ladymonix champions. This one is strictly for the house dancers. The B-side features "Waaalk" and "Ha Ha Ha", a sultry and energetic jaunt into ghetto tech and electro. If it wasn't already evident, Kuzco is clearly making a stand and representing the FLINTA and queer club spaces that she embodies.
The B-side is perfectly complemented by an outstanding remix from Detroit powerhouse Black Moonchild - a superbly deep and hypnotic techno groove reminiscent of UFO activity over the Motor City, with bleeping electronic signals passing through jittery hi-hat and drum passages, married with Kuzco's saucy spoken word.

After enticing tastemakers and fans the world over with her 2-track junket into street soul, Be Loved / What Could Happen, Kuzco doubles down with the after-hours antidote. Bound to Be presents the final two tracks to complete the 4-track EP, plus 2 remixes from Ladymonix and Black Moonchild.
Ladymonix delivers an uncompromising scat dub of Be Loved - a niche and signature style to emerge from the Detroit underground that Ladymonix champions. This one is strictly for the house dancers. The B-side features "Waaalk" and "Ha Ha Ha", a sultry and energetic jaunt into ghetto tech and electro. If it wasn't already evident, Kuzco is clearly making a stand and representing the FLINTA and queer club spaces that she embodies.
The B-side is perfectly complemented by an outstanding remix from Detroit powerhouse Black Moonchild - a superbly deep and hypnotic techno groove reminiscent of UFO activity over the Motor City, with bleeping electronic signals passing through jittery hi-hat and drum passages, married with Kuzco's saucy spoken word.

Proudly presenting Maravilhosamente Bem the powerful, female-centred third album by Brazilian singer, songwriter, actress, and creative director, Julia Mestre. Alongside being a member of the Latin Grammy-winning Brazilian supergroup, Bala Desejo, Julia has been steadily building a solo career where her unique vision and alluring soft, sultry voice take centre stage. Drawing inspiration from ‘80s ballads, MPB, pop and disco productions, each song on this third album finds Julia creatively exploring different characters and tones.
A love-song-driven LP at its core, Maravilhosamente Bem holds a playful mirror up to blissful days gone by, artfully reimagined with Julia’s own modern twist. Channelling a lo-fi ‘80s ballad aesthetic, Julia navigates a multitude of themes across the nine sublime tracks. From the sexy, whispered performances on vintage horror movie-inspired tunes ‘Vampira’ and ‘Pra Lua’ to the delicate, fragile love lullabies of ‘Sentimento Blues’ and ‘Cariñito’, and the seductive disco diva embodiment on dance tracks ‘Veneno de Serente’ and title track ‘Maravilhosamente Bem’. Another hidden highlight is the palette-cleansing mini-suite, ‘Interlúdio dos Amantes’. A luscious strings instrumental piece that lends to the beautiful Sade-esque ‘Seu Romance’.

Diese Periode ist gekennzeichnet durch die Verschmelzung vietnamesischer Musik mit westlicher Popmusik Mit der Veröffentlichung von Saigon Supersound Vol. 1 im Mai 2017 wird die Geschichte dieser fast unbekannten Musik zum ersten Mal neu aufgelegt. What started as an idea in 2012 became reality with the release of SAIGON SUPERSOUND Vol.1, compiled by Jan Hagenkötter. A compilation about the story of a musical era in Vietnam that was almost lost, made of tracks from 1965 to 1975, the so-called "Golden Music" period in the south of Vietnam, where - under difficult circumstances - a lively pop culture had developed. This period is characterized by the fusion of Vietnamese music with western pop music. With the release of Saigon Supersound Vol. 1 in May 2017 the story of this nearly unknown music will be reissued for the first time. The compilation includes some tunes reissued for the very first time since they´ve been released originally. Some tunes even for the very first time on Vinyl since they ?ve been released originaly on reel 2 reel tape only.

Saigon Supersound wird fortgesetzt um weitere interessante Melodien aus einer musikalischen Ära zu präsentieren, die lange Zeit im Dunkeln lag. Nach dem interntional gut aufgenommenen Release von Volume 1 freuen wir uns sehr, tiefer zu diggen und interessante Musik einer kurzen, aber bedeutenden Periode in der Geschichte Vietnams zu teilen.
Diesmal beschränkt sich die Auswahl der Titel auf die Zeit zwischen 1964 - 1975, das sogenannte "Goldene Zeitalter", in dem es im Süden Vietnams unter schwierigen Umständen eine lebendige Popkultur gab.
Für uns ist diese Geschichte mit Vol. 1 noch nicht zu Ende erzählt. Einige musikalische Facetten sind noch nicht beleuchtet, auch aus Mangel an qualitativ, geeignetem Ausgangsmaterial zur Aufarbeitung/Restaurierung. In der Zwischenzeit und vor allem durch die große Resonanz, die wir mit Vol. 1 in Vietnam erhalten haben (wir konnten zur Veröffentlichung Shows in den drei größten Städten Vietnams organisieren) und auch auf Festivals, die wir in London und Paris gespielt haben, haben sich neue Türen geöffnet und uns die Möglichkeit gegeben, Vol. 2 so zu gestalten, wie wir es uns wünschen.

Here comes a first EP by Josh Ludlow for Toy Tonics. Mastermind of Make a Dance aka M.A.D. records. London’s best kept secret (or not so secret anymore) of new underground dance weapons that are played by everybody who counts in the scene.

Here comes a first EP by Josh Ludlow for Toy Tonics. Mastermind of Make a Dance aka M.A.D. records. London’s best kept secret (or not so secret anymore) of new underground dance weapons that are played by everybody who counts in the scene.
Josh delivers a hot 4 -tracker that will move people on dance-floors worldwide. Combining 1990es filterhouse influences, 2000’s indie dance and some of the edgy contemporary funk moods that are lighting up clubs these days. The post - techno generation likes it funky and Josh delivers. Fitting perfectly with the vibe of Toy Tonics this EP will find a lot of friends. In fact Josh knows how things work.
Josh Ludlow has been steadily honing his craft over the past 15 years. Starting out releasing Drum & Bass under the ‘Squash!’ moniker in the late 2000’s whilst also playing drums in bands. Ho Chi Minh City based band, Saigon Soul Revival has been bringing alternative pre 1975 music from Saigon back to the stage since 2016 with their live performances. Honouring the original composers, singers and the golden era from which this music (Nh?c Vàng) came while applying new arrangements and interpretations of old Vietnamese songs. With tight grooves, psychedelic textures and a powerful unique sound, SSR has performed countless shows at a variety of venues across Vietnam. In 2017 they also took part in the nationally known "Ban Nh?c Vi?t" (known in the west as "The Band") TV format and and accompanied live the two release tours to the Saigon Supersound Compilation releases.
With support from *British Council's FAMLAB Fund initiative they started to create own compositions in the same vein for their debut album "H?a Âm X?a" that was produce by Jan Hagenkötter and released in 2019 on the Saigon Supersound Imprint. The album was recorded in Vietnam with additional guests like the famous (pre 1975) Vietnamese singer Mai L? Huy?n and the current popular Saigonese rapper "Blacka" (2022 finalist of Vietnam's most successful
TV show "Rap Vi?t") in order to combine the old sound with the new sound of Saigon. Some compositions include traditional Vietnamese instruments like the ?àn Nguy?t or the ?àn tranh & ?àn b?u which is played by famous traditionally-trained musician Th? H?i Ph??ng on the album. This fusion distinguishes it from the original recordings of the 60s and 70s and has resulted in a unique and contemporary sound. Their debut album "Hoa Am Xua" gained international success. Among many other media features It was nominated for the SONGLINES MUSIC AWARDS 2021 in the UK ! and received massive radio airplay and rotations on Radio FIP in France.
All members of the band are of Vietnamese background or have a strong connection to its culture and heritage through loved ones and their time spent in the country. Their music focuses on compositions that fuse Vietnamese lyrics and sounds with influences of western rock, soul, bolero, tango and other popular genres of this time period, most of which was banned after the war. This project strives to revive this beautiful musical heritage of Vietnam which represents an important cultural bridge between east and west.
