Presented in both vocal and instrumental form, Inkswel’s hydroponic new single “Say Goodbye” blends the finest of sun-baked hip-hop and hazy R&B into a fine-grained slice of ethereal Cali-funk, as masterly provided by Phat Kat’s raw, choppy verses and Jitwam’s velvet-like timbre. Hot on the heels of his successful autumnal tour of Europe, the antipodean beatsmith and low-riding soul-brother, Inkswel, arrives on the eighth 12" from Burek Records. Considering Inkswel's been working with people like Merwyn from Virgo Four, Gifted & Blessed and Linkwood for the third release on his own Hot Shot Sounds imprint, we weren't surprised when he told us about the recent collaboration he'd had with Dave Aju. Naturally we were keen to get this out into the world, complementing it with great remixes and additional tracks from Inkswel. The A-side comprises three funkadelicious, shape-throwing, pop-locking slices featuring the talents of San Fran's Dave Aju, Melbourne's Cazeaux O.S.L.O, Christchurch's Isaac Aesili and Adelaide's Charli James. They wear their shared love for hiphop on their sleeves, replicating old school sampling techniques and twinning them with a feel for modernity. The open kicks and sax thrills that begin 'No More Suckas' cement syrupy pads and swirling keys as Dave Aju rhymes about that classic conundrum, being given the chance for a night of intimate relations. Rotascoping blips and pads combined with fat bass work underpin the conscious spoken word poetry of 'Mind Yours', and 'Saturated' closes the side with razor-sharp claps, wonky chords and 808 cowbells laying the foundation for vocal call and responses. In classic turntablist style the bonus beat track 'Oishi Stylus' is also included, evoking the Pacific Rim's interconnectivity with its Nipponese flavours cut over solid beats. This ain't hip-house, it's hiphop-house. On the B-side our trio of heavyweight remixers let rip, each in their characteristic inimitable styles. NYC's DJ Nature edits and extends No More Suckas, playing with the vocals and adding strong drum patterns with a lilting flute melody to turn in a true hypnotic deep house chugger. Berlin's Iron Curtis uses the pads and spoken word component of the original to prelude a darkly evocative late-night slice of enticement, with heavy off-kilter kicks, haunting bells and floating chords drawing the listener deeper and deeper. London's breakbeat legend IG Culture uses the same spoken word parts as Iron but recombines them into new patterns as he lays down massive echoing big-room bass and jukey snares to fashion the original into a tour-de-force of footwork. Inkswel proves that hiphop is the sibling of house music, and this EP helps join the dots between those two forms of music whilst taking it to future forms.

Originally released in 2012, the debut release from Fatdog quickly became a cult classic amongst fans of low-slung deep house. Outside of the studio his Werk parties were hosting the likes Marcellus Pittman, Theo Parrish, Move D, MCDE, Levon Vincent, Moodymann & Patrice Scott in the North East of England. This EP was a testament to the wild basement energy that culminated from those nights, marrying UK and Detroit influences with consummate ease.

‘Remember Me’ sets the tone with Chris Raine’s soulful croon laid over warm organ chords and a restrained electro synth hook, creating a swinging, late-night vibe. ‘U&Me’ drifts into dubbed-out, codeine-laced slo-house territory, deep and narcotic.
On the B-side, ‘Cookie’ channels Theo Parrish with its syrupy, hypnotic strut, while ‘Contact’ closes out with an electroid edge—perfect for the 3AM dancefloor stalkers.

Some 13 years later, WOLF have reached back into the archives and with permission from the man himself, have reissued this timeless EP for a new generation of record buyers.

The legendary New Jersey House collective Smack were responsible for a long list of hits throughout the 90's, with members of the team producing under a number of different aliases and alongside Blaze, Kerri Chandler, Tony Humphries were at the forefront of the New Jersey sound.

One such alias was Princess Di, produced by Smack Productions own Healey LeCator and featuring an unknown vocalist. Together they released a string of X-rated house tracks from 1994 until 1996 that have gone on to be cult classics, standing the test of time.

With the permission from Jeffrey Collins from Music Station, WOLF have hand-picked their favourite Princess Di tracks and combined them onto one bumper 12". Fully remastered and cut LOUD. Sometimes you have to look back in order to move forward!

Limited edition repress, of this much loved Red Rack’em slice of genius that has been an elusive one to get a hold of in recent years, with the cheapest copy on the cogs racking in at £100.

‘In Love Again’ first surfaced as part of Red Rack'em's ‘All I Ever Wanted EP’ in 2010 becoming an underground smash. Soulful vocal samples, and beautiful Detroit strings work uniquely in the WOLF style that we come to expect. For this remix, Red Rack’em offers up an uptempo, with skippy drums, and a deep warm feel.

The B side features a ‘Latin Techno’, which combines filtered chopped up loops, layered over huge beats.

Justin Drake and Clive Henry, recognised as the legendary Peace Division, stood out as one of the UK's most successful tribal/tech house production duos from the late 90s to the mid-00s. Their contributions extended to renowned British labels such as NRK and Junior London, as well as releases with Hooj, Crosstown Rebels, and major label remixes.

Lesser-known but equally intriguing was their venture into a different musical realm under the alias Soul Purpose. Shifting towards a deeper shade of house, Soul Purpose featured tracks characterised by lush chords and rolling basslines, placing a strong emphasis on the soulful elements.

Originally released on Low Pressing Limited, an offshoot label of Clive Henry and Rocky (X-Press 2) iconic Low Pressing, the four Soul Purpose titles emerged between 1997 and 1998. Despite being somewhat under the radar, these tracks gained recognition among DJs in the know. Now, the Selected Works release, compiled from the original DAT tapes and fully remastered, reunites the entire Soul Purpose catalogue for the first time in 27 years since their initial release.

Crack the vault to find some slick, sultry, steamed up window biz from this mystery entity, ranging from a soulful 2-step burner featuring Ell Murphy (we’re still trying to track Ell down to shed some much-needed light on this conundrum), to an acid-tinged melon twister on the A side.

On the B, Henk teases further with that red-light basement feeling, blending breakbeats with heartstring hitting sweetness, before closing it out with a spoken word, psychedelic trip.

Emotive sweetness from the one they call Gratts, coming correct via those ever-reliable purveyors of all things house, WOLF Music. Two dream-state gems from the Belgian-born, Australia-based DJ and producer, complete with a signature, deep and delectable remix from one of Dublin’s finest exports Glenn Davis.

On the A, ‘Pretty Lights’ is a bittersweet saunter beachside, sun setting in the distance, bass striding beside as keys dance across the horizon. A melancholic narrative over a blissful groove, Brandon Markell Holmes’ heavenly vocals add an undeniable elegance to proceedings, combined with Leïto’s deft touch on the keys. Subtle house music with soul from a producer that’s been toiling away for nearly 25 years.

Flip it to find ‘Polaroids’, a late-night trip across the underground with Tee Amara leading the way. Her sublime vocals are laid over a bumping, piano-laden beat, bit-crushed synths and all. A track that keeps that distinct soulful thread, yet laces it with a club-ready dose of the good stuff.

Glenn Davis then rounds off the package laying down a remix of ‘Polaroids’ that hits in all the right spots. Dam-based don Retromigration steps into the big leagues letting loose his debut album on WOLF Music. An LP that has long been in the works and for good reason too. His debut LP, Straight Foxin’, is a carefully curated and crafted journey showcasing the creative explosions firing off in Retromigration’s brain. Joining the dots between genres, taking elements from here, ideas from there – twisting and turning yet never out of place. Take the opening three tracks, all tied together by a deep fondness for jazz but served up in different styles, ‘Kunta’ with that hazy beatsy blend, ‘Formant’ leaning into the realms of broken beat and DnB and ‘Be Someone’ cruising with the off-kilter house.

Elsewhere there’s prime examples of Retromigration’s signature sample-laden house with deeper cuts like ‘Mada’ and ‘Bouncer’, sitting side by side with more soulful explorations such as ‘New Cribs’ and ‘ITWT’.

Not one to be pigeonholed, another course of Retromigration’s expansive taste gets served up with four high energy hits. The bouncing footwork flavours of ‘Kush Love’ ft. Passion Deez and ethereal excursion ‘What If’ lead into a captivating nod to the heydays of jungle and DnB on ‘Mild Fever’ and ‘Bad Knees’ respectively.
