Fresh from launching his 909 Til Infinity with Option 4 and storming BPM so hard he was identified by Pulse Radio as one of the key breakthrough acts of the Mexican festival, MANIK returns to Ovum with more visceral, physical slabs of straight-up tech funk.
'Recourse' is special. Teaming up with LA word-painter Cari Golden, his fluctuating, body-popping groove is peppered with barbed purring poetry that's part existential, part party, all unique: Cari matching MANIK's every bobbing bass texture, MANIK matching Cari's every observation, everything about 'Recourse' is distinctive, exciting and full of fresh energy.
Momentum maintained throughout; things take an unexpected dubby twist as the 'VHS' shimmers and ripples with synth insistency. Rolling hi-hats, hip-snapping clap attacks and a timeless vocal shot build around each other, occasionally revealing a fully-juiced bassline swinging and rolling with total consistency. 'Los Angeles Dub' is straight up jack, no chaser: a grainy, analogue moment of total unabashed machine-melting funk. Don't be fooled by the title's locale; we could be in any party city at any period of time in the last 30 years and this will cause the same frenzied moves.
MANIK's been delivering the goods for several years, but even by his standards this is another level. Something tells us BPM isn't the only thing he'll be breaking through this year...

MANIK's star has been rising for the past few years, and this latest release on Poker Flat Recordings suggests the young New Yorker has a lot up his sleeve for 2016. Having already dropped dance-floor bombs on the likes of Hot Creations and Ovum, and spun everywhere from Panorama Bar to Womb in Tokyo, the Weights and Measures EP solidifies his emerging reputation as fresh voice on the scene.

The release kicks off with 'Thirsty Crow' -
a tightly wound groove that breaks down the barriers between house and techno effortlessly. The track builds around an infectious synth melody, and the interplay between various percussive elements - all designed for maximum damage on the dance-floor.

'Weights & Measures' is a deeply acidic affair that finds space for some luscious pads to break the tension, while 'Complexity' riffs off a classic house vibe but throws in some deeply leftfield sounds and rhythms for the heads.

A long-standing veteran of Josh Wink's Ovum imprint, the 'In Walks Bourbon' EP marks MANIK's fifth offering to the label and maintains the high quality we've come to expect from an artist who is comfortably at the top of his game right now. The EP consists of a trio of raw, chunky, house-influenced cuts which show M A N I K diving back in to the underground sounds of his New York roots with a taste of Chicago. The A side track "Wink KD" lures the listener in with its catchy groove and hypnotic vocal sample. The breakdown sees the track take a turn as Chris introduces and infectious acid bassline, perhaps an ode to label owner Josh Wink. On the B side we find the title track 'In Walks Bourbon" Chris smooths things out here, coming with a more head bobbing groove. Don't let that fool you as the track builds and builds with a rolling bass coming in that takes the track into overdrive. The EP closes on the jacking 'House Cut 2, Chris keeps the energy up with catchy synth stabs and various vocal samples. The snappy percussion keeps the track driving leading to a frenetic build.. An perfect finish to an extremely versatile EP; there's undoubtedly something for everyone in this package.

M A N I K returns to Ovum with House Cut 1 EP. A long-standing veteran of Josh Wink's Ovum imprint, the 'House Cut 1' EP marks MANIK's fourth offering to the label and maintains the high quality we've come to expect from an artist who is comfortably at the top of his game right now. True to its name, the EP consists of a trio of raw, chunky, house-influenced cuts which vary in style and function. The title track itself lures the listener in with bubbling synths floating over a clipped 4x4 beat, before giving way to a hectic salvo of staccato clap rushes and ride cymbals. 'Nothing Better' rolls along with a propulsive, tech-house whomp, with shimmering chords building up to usher in what can only be described as a thunderous bassline. As the track progresses, hints of acid-flecked goodness converge with 808 cowbells and hi-hats to create a peak-time dancefloor monster. The EP closes on a more melodic tip with 'Finch', with a rumbling analogue bass cutting a swathe through hypnotic latticework of arpeggiated synths and orbiting claps. An atmospheric finish to an extremely versatile EP; there's undoubtedly something for everyone in this package.

Its strange to think that it was only 2010 that saw the first records from Christopher Manik, aka M A N I K. Since exploding onto the scene with his debut Ovum release he has gone on to develop and strengthen his own sounds & styles. Never pigeonholed, the young New Yorker has confidently and creatively placed his music on a variety of the hottest labels of today, whilst always managing to maintain his own unique identity.
Today he returns to Ovum with an ode to his beloved former studio, 'Im Nice Like That', and presents a trio of new cuts, two of which were the very last productions to come out of his musical bunker. "The title track "I Got Us" is sort of a love song trapped inside a sleazier beat," says Chris, as he also owns up to having provided the vocals on the track.
"Amber Knife" comes heavy with its FM bass and 303 action before "Weekend Is 4 Lovers" rounds out the ep. "That was actually the last ever track that i wrote in the studio. I wrote the lyrics and sang on this again too. Its a song about falling for a girl whilst on a weekend away..." A fitting final hurrah for the studio and yet another impressive release from both M A N I K and Ovum recordings.
