Subb-an joins the Semi Delicious family for their 17th edition with the aptly named ‘Wobble’ EP, complete with a remix from label head Demi Riquísimo. The release marks another progression in the label’s sonic development as Subb-an contributes a heady, all killer no filler collection of tracks that fit snugly in the diverse, forward thinking back catalog of the imprint. ‘Liquid Sun’ kicks off the release. A subtle, chugging track that utilises a classic organ with a bass acid lines to get rolling. A low end heavy ‘Contact’ is next bringing with it a deep brooding tone and housy shuffling drums. Hot on the heels of the success of the Phonica AM’s debut release, lable curator Luther Vine has un- earthed another rare find. London based Subb-An is no stranger to all manner of Tech and Minimal sounds. He’s well known for the high calibre releases on his own One Records and countless seminal releases on lablel far too many to mention. Yet on ‘Synchronicity EP’ you will discover Subb-An like you’ve never heard him before. The newly found sound that he explores here with ease and panache is both steeped in 90’s history yet with knowledge of modern dancefloors.

The tight and driving opener ‘Synchronicity’ is sharp as a tack. The relentless kick of the 909 is pep- pered with Acid-tinged synths. A banger by all means, yet due to the eerie sensual vocals the overall feel of the track is positively hypnotic. It is followed by ‘Salvia Apiana’. The track evokes the Tribal rites with its gamelan influenced arrangement and superbly inventive use of playful arps. This melodic yet danceable sage scrub is guaranteed to rejuvenate all manner of tiered dancefloors.

The flip side opens with ‘Higher Frequency’ and travels far beyond the straight forward beatscapes of obvious and mundane. It resonates on mystic frequencies of Techno spectrum but remains infectiously danceable at all times.The closing track of the EP is an understated meditative masterpiece. ‘Atlantis’ takes bright jubilant semi-tones and sees them timidly burst through the artfully constructed dusty soundframe. The more you listen to it the more you will hear. Pure magic.

It gives us great please to present Subb-an’s first solo release on 20/20 Vision. Since his joint release with Adam Shelton 4 years ago, we have been very keen to get him involved on a solo release and the time is now! Since he arrived on the scene he has since gone on to become one of its biggest players, with a constantly jam-packed tour schedule and a loyal fan base. This is all down to his considered DJ sets, and trademark groove & appeal that accompany all of his productions. ‘Modern Love’ opens the release with a bouncing groove characterised by it’s kick and bass combo. The star of the show is a wobbly acidic sequence that rears its head sporadic through track and is sure to create some waves on the dancefloor. This is followed by title track ‘The Other Side’, in which a collection of crisp and sharp soundscapes are combined with Subb-an’s typical precision and attention to detail. On the B side we then find ‘El Otro Lado (Terrace Dub)’ which showcases a slightly tougher and techno-orientated side to the release. Featuring a stripped back collection of raw drum patterns with big kick drums and sharp high hats. The release is capped off with the digitally exclusive ‘El Otro Lado (Original Mix)’ which adds a dreamy synth layer that complements the core elements perfectly.

Dial Records vet Roman Flügel builds on vaporous atmosphere and snappy movements for his densely layered version of "Insides". Tackling "Lately" and "All I Want", Robert Johnson regulars Orson Wells and Massimiliano Pagliara display their love for bassline-driven dance music. And the Tuff City Kids outfit (a.k.a. Producer Mark E hails from the West Midlands, an area of the UK that was at the heart of the industrial revolution and was also hit hardest by the decline of UK industry in the 1970s, and again by the economic crisis of our own time. It's an area with a distinct sound and atmosphere, one that manifests in the music of artists as diverse as Black Sabbath and The Specials, and one that plays into many of the ideas behind Mark E's new record Product of Industry. The album's title is a subtle nod to the producer's past and heritage. He explains, "The name lies in the manufacturing past of the area I grew up, [and] the manufacturing past of my family. [It references] how the decline of industry in the Midlands UK changed the landscape physically and socially — I'm now a music producer and DJ, and this is totally different to my grandparents who were truck drivers and sheet metal workers. [The title discusses] how things have changed, and it's also about how I came to be in this position, due to the current global financial situation. I lost my job due to it, [which led to me] trying out music — and here I am, a product of industry, both currently and historically." As befitting its genesis, there's something distinctly mechanistic to the music on Product of Industry — as Mark E says, "The music is grinding, continuous, heavy, relentless." You can hear this idea in the industrial clatter that underpins "Kultra Kafe," the grinding rhythm of "Bog Dance," the pounding beat of "Eganix." Part of this sound is generated by the album's reliance on classic machinery of a musical kind: "My approach was very different on Product of Industry compared to Stonebreaker," Mark E explains. "I approached it with an album in mind. The technique is [also] different — this is majority analogue, whereas Stonebreaker was 100% digital." But just as importantly, this reliance on classic analogue synths also means that the sound of Product of Industry is shot through with a certain warmth, a reminder that there's humanity at the heart of this industrial environment and this industrial sound.. The music, explains the producer, was designed to be "soulful and delicate," and in many ways its abiding warmth is a throwback to the classic sounds of Chicago house. They're firmly located on the other side of the Atlantic, though, and several tracks incorporate "vocal snippets of the language and accent of the West Midlands." The result is an album that's steeped in history — both musical and social — but also sounds utterly contemporary. It's a testament to the way the creative spirit can flourish even in the most adverse of circumstances, and also an album-long evocation of the idea that the machines we build are ultimately expressions and extensions of ourselves.
