“Black Halo” is down-the-line and perhaps one of the catchiest tracks by Gregor Tresher.
The wobbling driving bassline builds up a rising tension that increases through the vast, detuned, and powerful string parts appearing to extend out to light years, reaching far beyond. Zaps drive the rhythm forward while rushing cymbals push the groove and weld everything together to absolute unity. For Gregor, techno and club culture have certain transcendental qualities, “Black Halo” is concerned with these sentiments and tells an ambivalent story. Dreaming of summer sun, dancefloor euphoria, Gregor Tresher‘s new “Trident“ release on Cocoon Recordings gives us a time, taking us on an epic voyage into the light. There are three contrasting cuts on offer here, each carrying his distinctive sound signature but each designed to accompany a different part of the journey.

“Trident“ opens the set with a real sense of urgency, employing the kind of intro that draws party people to the dancefloor, like bees to honey. Smooth, seductive and hypnotic, it pulls at the heart strings as the tech house groove shifts effortlessly through the gears. The scattered melody at its heart rains down on us, drenching us in love and happiness - the perfect antidote for the travails of 2020.

“Pariah“ takes it deeper and faster as rave signals sound the arrival of a techno behemoth. The arrangement gradually expands into an intricate sonic tapestry through a perceptive use of fades and drops that expertly control the dance floor, while inducing a state of trance through its dervish-like intensity. Once again, additional layers of percussion appear at exactly the right moment to elevate proceedings to the next level.

Finally, Gregor works his magic on “Witchcraft“. Fluctuating between snaking rhythms and blissed-out breakdowns that repeatedly wash over us. The retro, arp-driven synth melodies entwine with the bassline to simulate a sense of weightlessness as the sounds expand and contract to great effect. Like “Trident“, “Witchcraft“ is a track where you can lose yourself and then suddenly find yourself again, in a crowd of like-minded, smiling faces. Hearing any cut from this EP on a thumping system will definitely be worth the wait.

Gregor Tresher and Cocoon are linked by a long-time relationship which starts all the way back in 2004, when Sven Väth played Gregor's productions in heavy rotation. "Neon", "Full Range Madness", "The Now People" or "Still", just to name a few, can be considered as Techno classics of the Noughties. Almost ten years later, Gregor has established his position and is one of Germany's top notch techno producers. With "About A Good Place", he delivers his long overdue EP debut for Cocoon Recordings. He plays his favourite game straight to the point, with massive analogue synth lines, fat kick drums and hi hats that force you to move: This is adrenaline for the big floors on this planet, those with the real fat PAs!
The title tune "About A Good Place" is one of Sven's secret weapons in his recent sets and breathes Tresher-air XXL! It's all about that crazy, detuned synth line that grows bigger and bigger and results in pure harmony at the great breakdown in the middle of the track. The massive kick drum adds what you need to let the sun shine and wave your hands up in the air!
"Lifecycles" follows that vibe, but digs a bit deeper and adds more sensitivity to Tresher's Techno formula, with all the elements that we already know from "About A Good Place". Crazy arpeggio lines, filter moves and the mandatory dark bass line: hypnotic techno with no chance to escape!
Last but not least, there is "The Sun Sequencer" - the dignified answer to the preliminary techno bangers. More relaxed, with slight touches of House and Trance, "The Sun Sequencer" should be the right choice for fans of Chymera and Slam. Its been a full 12 months since Gregor Tresher releases his "As Days Go By" ep on Ovum and a year that has seen him preparing, releasing and touring his excellent artist album "Lights From The Inside." His previous Ovum double-header was a secret weapon for those that received it in time for last years Miami week and what better a way to prepare for this years than to drop the latest brace from our great friend.
"I see Ovum as a home for my music (besides Break New Soil of course) and it´s a great thing to be able to release on the label, as I´ve been a fan for many years. I kind of feel at home there, because the label isn´t bound to a particular style of electronic music but has a wide range and that´s something I strive for as an artist as well" says Gregor.
This latest release also marks the third and possibly final in his 'Days' series, with "For Many Days To Come" following 2010's "95 Days" and of course last years "As Days Go By." The lead cut here is a teasing little jitterbug with a skittish groove and delicate piano riff, whilst on the flip "Throwing Faces" is tasty little firecracker.
"The crowd you hear on "Throwing Faces" is not a random sample, but the actual Berghain crowd. I recorded them when I played live there last summer. It was one of the best gigs in my career so I thought it might be nice to immortalise it in this way."
Gregor has delivered yet another heavyweight release for us here at Ovum and following up Luca Bacchetti's sun-soaked "On The Moon" ep, we are now set and ready for the Florida sunshine... Lets roll!

Longtime underground star Francesca Lombardo steps up to Ovum with a trio of superb new signature sounds. Italian Lombardo has been crisscrossing the globe and headlining all its most tasteful clubs and festivals for many years. Her powerful, heartfelt grooves have come on the most influential labels of the day and her critically acclaimed debut album 'Life of Leaf' showed that she can do all sounds and styles from downtempo to pop with equal skills. Her mix of innovation and compelling grooves continues on this latest EP. The vocals on the opener 'Magic Moment' are a poem Francesca's friend Victoria sent to her. She kept them for four years before ?nding the special inspiration that encouraged her to use them in these writing sessions. They lend the tune an intimate feel and draw you in deep to the elegant house drums and warming synths. It's an uplifting and classy tune with a standout Moog bassline that will lock in the floor. Josh Wink is as iconic as it gets in electronic music. The Philly artist crafted several of the genre's most enduring hits early in his career and has continued to remain at the forefront of the scene ever since. His Ovum label is part of the reason for that, as are superb new tunes like this one. Truncate is one of the new techno dons, known for his funky signature style of jackin’ tracks, along with crafting vast, all-consuming grooves that dominate dance floors. He has done so mostly on his own label and together the pair cook up some real magic on this new release. ‘Be Aware’ came about during a multi-day studio session at Truncate’s LA studio and is the first of two EPs that will be released from that same creative collaboration.Josh has been a fan of Truncate’s for years and had him remix his 2016 single 'Shoelaces' and 2017 single 'Resist', while in return Josh remixed Truncate’s 2017 tune 'Concentrate'. The timeless 'Be Aware' is a ghoulish techno track with freaky vocals that keep you looking over your shoulder. A sparse lead synth rises and falls to edgy effect, slick drums roll deep and unique tweaked effects flesh out this most well-crafted of tracks. Philly-born DJ, legendary producer and the man behind many of techno's most iconic cuts, Josh Wink remains as prominent now as he did a quarter of a century ago. That is because of the constant sense of innovation in all he does, as well as his rare understanding of dance floor dynamics and mastery of his studio. Says Josh of his latest track, “Every time I play this people rush over asking 'what is this track that says “get your balls back”?' Its reaction after playing has been amazing and reassuring that it hits hard, works on the floor, and sticks in people's heads.“ He's not wrong: the powerful 'Balls Back' is a spatial, acid-tinged techno stormer that builds and builds until it ultimately explodes in signature Josh Wink fashion. So… I said 'Wow. Okay.' I went into the studio the next day and added the vocal, switching the two as it had a better rhythmic flow."

A bucket-list EP for the Gera-based artist whose followed and collected from Winks label since inception, Nova is both a personal showcase and a homage to a label thats inspired his tension-heavy signature. Adding to a discography that boasts some of most respected techno labels possible (Vakant, Mule Musiq, Watergate, Desolat, Freude Am Tanzen), the Nova EP flexs Kadens darkest and deepest tendencies and includes certain signatures that many of the best Ovum releases share: acid, a direct and effective single word sample, versions and a DJ tool that will blow your dancefloors heads off.

The acid mix of Nova sets the scene. Acid through Kadens perception; its warm, its subtle, it strips right back to a naked groove before thundering back into a head-shoeing finale with devastating effect. Its complemented by Mathiass alternative version; an atmospheric mix where the acid is switched out for rippling, dubby synths and a relentless drive that has just a touch of a French kiss to it. Introducing Amberoom: a brand new name from three old friends… Manuel Tur, Adrian Hoffmann and Ramin Nouyan.
Operating in a similar mindset to Manuel's Ribn project a few years ago, Amberoom is a celebration of the freestyle spirit. Three mates and a bunch of machines jamming the day away with no intention but creating beautiful moments, dynamics and tones.
The spirit is evident from the off on 'Rhit': The mid tempo funk in the percussion, the breath-taking organ blasts, the casually late piano line… The track has a life of its own that could only come about through jamming and open minds. At points heads-down and tribal, at others epic, this really is powerful stuff.
The power continues on 'Hover'. The staggered woodblock beat that ignites the track gives no hint at what's about to come… Suddenly a dense fog of synths heave into the mix, harmonically weaving with a yearning cosmic far-away feel that's just as much physical as it is emotional. Genuinely majestic.
We close with 'Machine' which sums up the beauty of the project; a homage to the hardware being pumped and massaged to create these fusions, it's an awe-striking 11 minute episode of brilliantly drawn out deep, dubby funk. The guitar twangs and synth ripples creating a strong Balearic feel, the whirling, grainy FX and textures have a trippy appeal while the crunchy kicks keep everything real… This really does take you away to special places.

With over 25 years in the game, André Galluzzi can respectfully be awarded the veteran badge of honour. A mark of experience and longevity for an artist who has, as they say, been there and done it all. Today howeversees the German take on a new adventure, with his debut release for Josh Winks Ovum Recordings. As a DJ, André has held residencies at three of Germany and the worlds most influential Clubs - Tresor, Ostgutand Berghain. Been the driving force behind his own We Play Vinyl party. Managed his own Taksi (along side Paul Brtschitsch) and Aras Record labels and featured his own music on such highly acclaimed imprints as Cocoon, Cadenza, Ostgut Ton and Highgrade. Back in 2001, having released his seminal mix compilation, 'Im Garten', André embarked on a new series of events that regularly saw him play intoxicating sets of up to 10-hours. The parties went by the name of Submerge and those infamous Dj sets have inspired his beautiful brace for Ovum today. The metronomic kick drum of the title track introduces us to its immersive groove, whilst bubbling and elasticated fx vie for our attention, adding a sublime swing to Submerge. On the flip, Bold, by name and nature, ups the swing ante with its fierce acidic melody, shimmering hats and rasping snare.

While it may be our starter; first dish Peven is definitely more of a main course. Heady and intoxicating with itspercussive, funky drums and undulating keys, its carries us on its woozy wave of rich analogue bass.

Our appetite is further satisfied by the deeper sophisticated tones of Lite Green. Its malleable, swinging groove is governed by its pulsating bassline and dense kick-drum as lazer synths sweep and claps fire on thisclassy cosmic jam.

BN300s dramatic and ghostly strings are at odds with its frenetic bouncing bass melody and yet together theywork in complete harmony to create our final musical indulgence from The Menu.

Gel's production career exploded with Ovum almost 10 years ago with the iconic aforementioned 'Underground Bullshit' EP. Since then he's established relationships with some of Ovum's most respected, progressive contemporaries - Defected, Mobilee, Get Physical, Be As One - but now the Israeli craftsman is back at his spiritual home with three of his biggest tracks in recent times. Get to know:
Lean, stark, iced-out; 'Raver' was tailored for Ovum. Every element plays a key role; from the oak-trunk kicks to the bellowing subs to the demonic downpitched spoken sermon by way of the life-support machine rhythmic texture... Everything comprised to create a subtle, restrained but wholly dark tech groove that refuses to quit.
With a refreshing sense of contrast, 'Optical' slaps hard from the off as a plucked riff springs from out of nowhere. A true drama-raiser that fluctuates back and forth, causing every other element from the kicks right the way up to the percussion to follow its tense pattern. Drop this and watch the panic unfold before your very eyes.
Finally we hit 'Akasa'. Ovum welcomes Leftbank Records co-boss Dudley Strangeways: a UK house and techno DJ rooted with serious residency stripes at the legendary Back To The Future Parties and appearances at the likes of Boiler Room. Hot off the back of releases on StarDub, Little Helpers and Made Of Concrete comes his Ovum debut; three tracks made constructed for one sole purpose… Melting minds in the darkest of rooms.
'Keep It Clean' is twistedly simple; a rump-busting roll in the drum department and paranormal pad leave space for a precision tuned tone that warps with the gravitas of a life support machine. Sinewy, cold and deliciously disconcerting, Dudley ensures funk and focus with delicately placed rhythmic elements and constant fluctuations.

Next we find ourselves breaking into an early 90s warehouse as 'Transition' whisks us on an acid trip with flurries of jack and a lean lead line that slithers through the ever-mutating drums and occasional FX hailstorms. Devilishly futuristic and tailored for those deep long blends, the stripped back extensive nature of this guarantees mixing bliss.

Truly, tracks built by a DJ, for DJs. Don't let this one slip…

Nacho Marco's 'Warm Trax Vol. 1' was an Ovum highlight in 2015 and a much welcomed return to the label for the Spanish producer. Vol. 1 with its rich analogue textures and acidic flair, picked up a wealth of support. Today Nacho returns with Vol. 2 and a new trio of Trax for our trip.

One of the most acclaimed DJ's and producers from Spain, Nacho Marco's rich musical history is evident in all of his productions. As comfortable creating a peak time acid number as he is rolling the depths of house, Nacho is clearly influenced by the early sounds of Chicago and acid house and always delivers a modern twist on what is a timeless sound. It's one thing to take influence from the past, but its quite another to ensure that you keep on pushing forward.

Hypnotic and sparse, Afterlife opens the Ep with its bubbling acid line and stripped, raw beats that bring you back to the Warehouse.

Let's Play continues with the acid theme as it ripples away under a drowsy bassline, broken by tight snare and shining hats that build to peak time bliss.

Finally we're treated to the smooth balearic vibes of Tell Me Something, with its hooky piano riff and smooth synth chords. Sunset/rise anyone?

The precision-tuned tech machine that is Rob Hes continues to scale up the gears with his highly anticipated debut on Josh Wink's Ovum.
A key weapon in Rob's full-shade arsenal, 'Main Sounds' follows a solid stream of steam-powered grooves on the likes of Tronic, SCI+TEC, Elevate, KD Music and, just this month, Gregor Tresher's Breaking New Soil. It's already become the subject of ardent 'ID' theorists and demanding fan queries thanks to his recent Asia tour video... Now he's finally able to unleash it, along with two other equally dynamic grooves.
'Main Sounds' is the type of track that catches you unaware. A stately 4/4 suddenly goes into overdrive as a cathedral-shaking arpeggio penetrates to the forefront. Creepy, consistent and chilling, it will have your floor hypnotised from start to finish.
'On The Move' ups the physical sensation factor with its steam-powered drum arrangement. Each percussive element perfectly positioned to heighten the drama, the rhythm is complemented every step of the way as an icy hook entwines itself amid the lolloping energy.
Finally we hit "Perfect Illusion" where dense layers of atmospheres shroud the spectrum and chunkier brick-like kicks plough through the mists driving a shimmering hook and its acidic tendrils to the centre with restrained suspense. A fitting way to conclude his debut Ovum EP, something tells us this won't be a one-off...

Fresh from launching his 909 Til Infinity with Option 4 and storming BPM so hard he was identified by Pulse Radio as one of the key breakthrough acts of the Mexican festival, MANIK returns to Ovum with more visceral, physical slabs of straight-up tech funk.
'Recourse' is special. Teaming up with LA word-painter Cari Golden, his fluctuating, body-popping groove is peppered with barbed purring poetry that's part existential, part party, all unique: Cari matching MANIK's every bobbing bass texture, MANIK matching Cari's every observation, everything about 'Recourse' is distinctive, exciting and full of fresh energy.
Momentum maintained throughout; things take an unexpected dubby twist as the 'VHS' shimmers and ripples with synth insistency. Rolling hi-hats, hip-snapping clap attacks and a timeless vocal shot build around each other, occasionally revealing a fully-juiced bassline swinging and rolling with total consistency. 'Los Angeles Dub' is straight up jack, no chaser: a grainy, analogue moment of total unabashed machine-melting funk. Don't be fooled by the title's locale; we could be in any party city at any period of time in the last 30 years and this will cause the same frenzied moves.
MANIK's been delivering the goods for several years, but even by his standards this is another level. Something tells us BPM isn't the only thing he'll be breaking through this year...
