After 47 years together, the iconic Danish duo Laid Back continue to defy expectations, entering a new and remarkably productive creative phase.
Their upcoming album, Born to Fly, captures their unmistakable sound while showcasing a renewed sense of energy and inspiration
“We feel like we are meant to make music. And when we play music, it feels like we’re flying,” says John Guldberg, reflecting on the album’s title and spirit.
Long known for their unhurried approach to releasing music, Laid Back now find themselves in unfamiliar territory. Guldberg describes a surge in creativity that has
turned their process on its head.
“It’s kind of funny — Laid Back has always taken its time making records. We’ve been behind schedule for most of our career. Now it’s the opposite:
I’m actually starting to worry about whether I’ll have time to release everything I’ve got in me,” he says.
Their current workflow reflects this momentum. Guldberg develops initial ideas,which he shares with Tim Stahl, who then brings them to life with vocals and instrumentation.
“When he sends me something and I start singing and playing on it, that’s when it really becomes Laid Back,” says Stahl.
The duo’s creative output has accelerated to such an extent that even ahead of the release of Born to Fly, they already have enough material prepared for more than a double album for their next project.
“It’s about making the most of the time you have left. I used to feel there was plenty of time and no need to rush. Now time feels much more valuable,” Guldberg adds
.
Alongside their creative resurgence, Laid Back are also seeing a shift in their audience demographics. Streaming data and live performances indicate a growing younger fanbase — a development that has taken the duo by surprise.
“I’m really looking forward to getting back out on stage. We still have the urge to perform, and we love making people happy. That’s what our music is for,” says Stahl.

Laid Back gained their first international major break through in the 80's with Sunshine Reggae and White Horse. The dualism and originality of the two songs has left a worldwide and everlasting reputation of their music. The 3rd evergreen from their hand was made in 1990 named Bakerman altogether with a music video by Lars Von Trier.
More recently, the two members has co-founded their own record company, Brother Music, which has released Laid Back singles such as Cocaine Cool, remixes from Soul Clap, and latest the mini-album Cosyland and the chill out album, Cosmic Vibes.
In 2013 they released the double album Uptimistic Music.
2019 was the 40th anniversary and release of the album Healing Feeling.
2023 marks the year of a new 21track studio album "Road To Fame"

Remastered by the Band from the Original 4 Track Audio Tapes.
Includes the Timeless early Hit "Bolivia" and Classic "Roger" which was covered by MGMT.
In the beginning Laid Back studio was a 4 track studio. Many of the songs from the 1st album were recorded on 4 track, also Bolivia. However, in the process we upgraded to 8 track and re-recorded Bolivia, the version on the album. Listening back to the 4 track version, it has got the groove that we lost on the 8 track version. We were then going for the best sound. We have learned a lot. All our big hits are first takes. That's where the magic is. Much time and efforts spend, to restore the 4 track version, without changing or adding anything. Just editing and improvement of sound. Thanks to engineer Bjørn Winnem. Included as bonus track on the remastered album. Enjoy

Earlier this year, Danish electronic pioneers Laid Back released 'Uptimistic Music Vol 1.', their first studio album since 2004. The duo's long-awaited comeback was followed by critical acclaim and a series of live performances.
While playing festivals in Ibiza, Georgia, Denmark and the Faroe Islands last summer, John Guldberg and Tim Stahl took the time to put the finishing touches on their upcoming release: 'Uptimistic Music,' a double album featuring Vol.1 and a second record of unreleased material.
'Brother', the first single out of the double album, was released on Monday 23 September. "The track originates from the mid-eighties and it talks about the brotherly feeling in us," explained Stahl. "Its lyrics are even more relevant today: 'Brother, time is running out.' We are well-aware of the fact that we are some old music industry geezers," said Guldberg jokingly. "Uptimistic Music is a combination of some old songs we had lying around - that are still alive and kicking! - and new songs we composed since our last album 'Happy Dreamer.' Anything less than a double album wouldn't have been enough! The positive and timeless message that pervades our music is deeply-rooted in the way we think and express ourselves. A song should be judged on its longevity rather than its novelty," agreed the two musicians, who have been friends for over 40 years.
'Uptimistic Music' will be released digitally on 14 October and physically in early November. A few days after the album release, the band will embark on an extensive Danish tour that will kick off in Viborg and will include dates in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, Vejle and Randers. Earlier this year, Danish electronic pioneers Laid Back released 'Uptimistic Music Vol 1.', their first studio album since 2004. The duo's long-awaited comeback was followed by critical acclaim and a series of live performances. While playing festivals in Ibiza, Georgia, Denmark and the Faroe Islands last summer, John Guldberg and Tim Stahl took the time to put the finishing touches on their upcoming release: 'Uptimistic Music,' a double album featuring Vol.1 and a second record of unreleased material. 'Brother', the first single out of the double album, was released on Monday 23 September. "The track originates from the mid-eighties and it talks about the brotherly feeling in us," explained Stahl. "Its lyrics are even more relevant today: 'Brother, time is running out.' We are well-aware of the fact that we are some old music industry geezers," said Guldberg jokingly. "Uptimistic Music is a combination of some old songs we had lying around - that are still alive and kicking! - and new songs we composed since our last album 'Happy Dreamer.' Anything less than a double album wouldn't have been enough! The positive and timeless message that pervades our music is deeply-rooted in the way we think and express ourselves. A song should be judged on its longevity rather than its novelty," agreed the two musicians, who have been friends for over 40 years. 'Uptimistic Music' will be released physically in early November.
A few days after the album release, the band will embark on an extensive Danish tour that will kick off in Viborg and will include dates in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, Vejle and Randers. For more details please visit: www.laidback.dk

These tracks were recorded when the term chill-out music was coming into being. Our record company back then thought the music too different from our well-known style, but we found it perfect for relaxing and painting. Actually we had begun painting pictures as a part of making music. But also as an excuse to get away from a music business giving us a hard time. We found this music to be healing us and giving us pleasure. Even though we got quite a positive feedback when it was the soundtrack for our painting exhibition at Galleri Projekt, Copenhagen 2001, these tracks went back on the shelf. At the time, Laid Back was working on the album "Happy Dreamer", where "Slow Friday" and "Blue Lagoon" appears in different versions.
Recently we listened to the music again, and, like good wine, we believe it has only got better from being stored on a shelf for 14 years before being released. We hope that you will enjoy listening to it.

Laid Back in Top Form: New Music Flowing After 47 Years
After 47 years together, the iconic Danish duo Laid Back continue to defy expectations, entering a new and remarkably productive creative phase.
Their upcoming album, Born to Fly, captures their unmistakable sound while showcasing a renewed sense of energy and inspiration
“We feel like we are meant to make music. And when we play music, it feels like we’re flying,” says John Guldberg, reflecting on the album’s title and spirit.
Long known for their unhurried approach to releasing music, Laid Back now find themselves in unfamiliar territory. Guldberg describes a surge in creativity that has
turned their process on its head.
“It’s kind of funny — Laid Back has always taken its time making records. We’ve been behind schedule for most of our career. Now it’s the opposite:
I’m actually starting to worry about whether I’ll have time to release everything I’ve got in me,” he says.
Their current workflow reflects this momentum. Guldberg develops initial ideas,which he shares with Tim Stahl, who then brings them to life with vocals and instrumentation.
“When he sends me something and I start singing and playing on it, that’s when it really becomes Laid Back,” says Stahl.
The duo’s creative output has accelerated to such an extent that even ahead of the release of Born to Fly, they already have enough material prepared for more than a double album for their next project.
“It’s about making the most of the time you have left. I used to feel there was plenty of time and no need to rush. Now time feels much more valuable,” Guldberg adds
.
Alongside their creative resurgence, Laid Back are also seeing a shift in their audience demographics. Streaming data and live performances indicate a growing younger fanbase — a development that has taken the duo by surprise.
“I’m really looking forward to getting back out on stage. We still have the urge to perform, and we love making people happy. That’s what our music is for,” says Stahl.
Born to Fly is set for release across CD, vinyl, and digital formats. Laid Back will also perform in selected cities across Europe later this year 2026.
“We hope people can hear that we’ve grown — and that it still makes sense for us to make new music,” says Guldberg.

Laid Back gained their first international major break through in the 80's with Sunshine Reggae and White Horse. The dualism and originality of the two songs has left a worldwide and everlasting reputation of their music. The 3rd evergreen from their hand was made in 1990 named Bakerman altogether with a music video by Lars Von Trier.
More recently, the two members has co-founded their own record company, Brother Music, which has released Laid Back singles such as Cocaine Cool, remixes from Soul Clap, and latest the mini-album Cosyland and the chill out album, Cosmic Vibes.
In 2013 they released the double album Uptimistic Music.
2019 was the 40th anniversary and release of the album Healing Feeling.
2023 marks the year of a new 21track studio album "Road To Fame"

Remastered by the Band from the Original 4 Track Audio Tapes.
Includes the Timeless early Hit "Bolivia" and Classic "Roger" which was covered by MGMT.
In the beginning Laid Back studio was a 4 track studio. Many of the songs from the 1st album were recorded on 4 track, also Bolivia. However, in the process we upgraded to 8 track and re-recorded Bolivia, the version on the album. Listening back to the 4 track version, it has got the groove that we lost on the 8 track version. We were then going for the best sound. We have learned a lot. All our big hits are first takes. That's where the magic is. Much time and efforts spend, to restore the 4 track version, without changing or adding anything. Just editing and improvement of sound. Thanks to engineer Bjørn Winnem. Included as bonus track on the remastered album. Enjoy

Earlier this year, Danish electronic pioneers Laid Back released 'Uptimistic Music Vol 1.', their first studio album since 2004. The duo's long-awaited comeback was followed by critical acclaim and a series of live performances.
While playing festivals in Ibiza, Georgia, Denmark and the Faroe Islands last summer, John Guldberg and Tim Stahl took the time to put the finishing touches on their upcoming release: 'Uptimistic Music,' a double album featuring Vol.1 and a second record of unreleased material.
'Brother', the first single out of the double album, was released on Monday 23 September. "The track originates from the mid-eighties and it talks about the brotherly feeling in us," explained Stahl. "Its lyrics are even more relevant today: 'Brother, time is running out.' We are well-aware of the fact that we are some old music industry geezers," said Guldberg jokingly. "Uptimistic Music is a combination of some old songs we had lying around - that are still alive and kicking! - and new songs we composed since our last album 'Happy Dreamer.' Anything less than a double album wouldn't have been enough! The positive and timeless message that pervades our music is deeply-rooted in the way we think and express ourselves. A song should be judged on its longevity rather than its novelty," agreed the two musicians, who have been friends for over 40 years.
'Uptimistic Music' will be released digitally on 14 October and physically in early November. A few days after the album release, the band will embark on an extensive Danish tour that will kick off in Viborg and will include dates in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, Vejle and Randers. Earlier this year, Danish electronic pioneers Laid Back released 'Uptimistic Music Vol 1.', their first studio album since 2004. The duo's long-awaited comeback was followed by critical acclaim and a series of live performances. While playing festivals in Ibiza, Georgia, Denmark and the Faroe Islands last summer, John Guldberg and Tim Stahl took the time to put the finishing touches on their upcoming release: 'Uptimistic Music,' a double album featuring Vol.1 and a second record of unreleased material. 'Brother', the first single out of the double album, was released on Monday 23 September. "The track originates from the mid-eighties and it talks about the brotherly feeling in us," explained Stahl. "Its lyrics are even more relevant today: 'Brother, time is running out.' We are well-aware of the fact that we are some old music industry geezers," said Guldberg jokingly. "Uptimistic Music is a combination of some old songs we had lying around - that are still alive and kicking! - and new songs we composed since our last album 'Happy Dreamer.' Anything less than a double album wouldn't have been enough! The positive and timeless message that pervades our music is deeply-rooted in the way we think and express ourselves. A song should be judged on its longevity rather than its novelty," agreed the two musicians, who have been friends for over 40 years. 'Uptimistic Music' will be released physically in early November.

These tracks were recorded when the term chill-out music was coming into being. Our record company back then thought the music too different from our well-known style, but we found it perfect for relaxing and painting. Actually we had begun painting pictures as a part of making music. But also as an excuse to get away from a music business giving us a hard time. We found this music to be healing us and giving us pleasure. Even though we got quite a positive feedback when it was the soundtrack for our painting exhibition at Galleri Projekt, Copenhagen 2001, these tracks went back on the shelf. At the time, Laid Back was working on the album "Happy Dreamer", where "Slow Friday" and "Blue Lagoon" appears in different versions.
Recently we listened to the music again, and, like good wine, we believe it has only got better from being stored on a shelf for 14 years before being released. We hope that you will enjoy listening to it.

From those sessions, only "White Horse" made it to a final treatment. The rest of the material was left behind, as our record company at the time found it too "different". After "White Horse" being a track indeed defining our sound, we thought it would be interesting to dig out left-overs to fulfill a documentation of that period - crucial for us at the time. We were still innocent

We all want to get high whatever we do in life, in all walks of life, in spirits, sports, politics, showbusiness, all kind of business, in school and education and not to forget love. Musically the groove is kept in the recognizable family of the horse, with an updated twist. Actually the song was born in key of major, as a more rock guitar riff kinda song included in the package. Also included is an ultra minimalistic version, mainly made on Ipad. Danish electronic musician and DJ Kasper Bjørke has done a really cool remix. Finally we made a space mix, mainly for our own pleasure and for those who like to get out there and more into it. A video is in the final editing stage, following the style of Beautiful Day and Cocaine Cool, with self made animation. Music is more than a trendy sound and a fancy look. Danish duo Laid Back made a most surprising comeback to the clubs in 2010 with "Cocaine cool". Not that they had ever been really forgotten: Their electro pop classic "white horse" remained a sure shot in clubs for the thirty years after it's release 30 years back and a constant inspiration to boatload of diverse artists from techno to hip-hop. "cocaine cool" was recorded at the same session but the ironic vocals ridiculing label executives blowing up their frail ego with the chemical substance were deemed to risquee at that time, so the recording collected dust in some box until last year. Bostons "Soul Clap" another duo hailed as one of the hotest things in clubland known for their eclectic funk-rooted taste. They opt for a cool sparser arrangement leaving out the "white horse"-like chords. A loose, dry electro funk beat, hpynotic one-note synth, few dub effects and additional vocoder vocals do the trick bravorously. Besides an instrumental version there's also a harder jacking dub take sounding like early chicago house edits. And while the boys are add it they also re-edited another huge one from Laid Back: "baker man" that managed the unlikely balancing act of not only hitting it bigtime in the charts but also in the emerging balearic scene. this 12" is cool in every which way!

Recorded in the Same Session, Remastered by the Band to full glory and released Worldwide Exclusively in a Cooperation by Laid Back and Yours Truly, Wordandsound. Few groups can match the continuity in career Laid Back can boast about, now more than 30 years after their debut.The new release is a controversial track recorded at the same session that yielded 'White Horse', but censored by their record company at the time. 'Cocaine Cool' has been resurrected A.D. 2010 and features a graphic animation video clip eminently produced by Laid Back themselves. "Way back in 1981, on the same night the 'White Horse' groove was born and jammed onto an 8-track tape recorder, we also did some other recordings. They were never completed and have stayed on the shelf ever since. Recently, in the process of transferring old analog master tapes to digital, we came across those vetust 8-track tapes, and when listening again, we found the unused material quite up-to-date. One of the unfinished grooves we consider musically being a brother to 'White Horse' has now been completed. The lyrics for this track, written by Arthur Stander, go back to the same period of time when during a trip to Los Angeles trying to shop some songs, the coolness of the A/R guys there gave us the inspiration!" Now reissued by Glossy Mistakes, the album receives its first official vinyl edition, remastered and available both in standard black and a limited burgundy pressing.
At the core of the record lies an unusual but striking element: the steady pulse of a human heartbeat. Rather than a conceptual gesture, it becomes the foundation of the music itself-treated as a deep, bass-like rhythm that anchors the entire album. Around it, Laswell builds his unmistakable sonic world, drawing from dub techniques where basslines expand, dissolve, and re-emerge, and where space becomes as important as sound.
Across its extended compositions, the album unfolds slowly and deliberately. Layers of electric sitar, guitar, keyboards and subtle percussion drift in and out, creating a fluid, almost tidal movement. The heartbeat remains present throughout, grounding even the most abstract passages in something physical and immediate.

Rather than a conceptual gesture, it becomes the foundation of the music itself-treated as a deep, bass-like rhythm that anchors the entire album. Around it, Laswell builds his unmistakable sonic world, drawing from dub techniques where basslines expand, dissolve, and re-emerge, and where space becomes as important as sound.
Across its extended compositions, the album unfolds slowly and deliberately. Layers of electric sitar, guitar, keyboards and subtle percussion drift in and out, creating a fluid, almost tidal movement. The heartbeat remains present throughout, grounding even the most abstract passages in something physical and immediate.
At the center stands Sanders' saxophone-searching, expansive, and deeply spiritual. His playing moves freely across the structures, at times echoing the lineage of John Coltrane, while also reaching beyond it. Alongside him, Haynes adds a complementary voice, weaving through the shifting textures.

On his sixth album, The Arc of Tension, the Berlin based DJ, label owner and producer OLIVER KOLETZKI yet again presents his remarkable vision of contemporary electronic music, while he assumes the role of a storyteller. The Arc of Tension speaks to its listener as a singular, self contained work, which communicates by way of its natural flow and arc of suspense. The latter is mirrored not only in the multifarious narrative of the actual album, but can also be understood as evidence for its creator's long musical history.
While Koletzki focussed on a diverse range of vocal collaborations on his previous long players, he now moves on to a different form of storytelling, rooted in the quiet confidence of a veteran musician, as well as the hectic lifestyle of a globally in demand DJ. The Arc of Tension is the psychonautic journey through the various continents of Oliver's consciousness. The quiet chirps and warbles, which initially unfold on the opener 'A Tribe Called Kotori', thus act as a loose associative bridge to 'Der Mu?ckenschwarm', Oliver's big breakthrough hit of 2005. The first minutes of the album leave no room for doubt - we are immediately locked into an autobiographical world of sound that knows how to captivate from the get go. The dreamy, exotic timbres of the downbeat tracks 'By My Side', Tankwa Town' and 'Byron Bay' penetrate our minds in a subtle yet purposeful manner. But soon the tension tightens and organic sounds one by one evolve towards a sterner, electronic cadence. The bittersweet neon synths of 'Spiritual Not Religious' pave the way for the complex rhythm of 'A Star Called Akasha', an early highlight carried by melancholic cellos and contemplative piano chords. The ultimate turning point follows with 'Through the Darkness'. It’s rare that a certain sound is entirely an artist’s own. Although undeniably a stew of impeccable influences – from blues to folk to Latin to dusty funk, soul and hip-hop – one cannot hear a Tommy Guerrero song without immediately recognising it as his - and his only.
The cult skater from San Francisco is globally renowned as one of the original members of the legendary “Bones Brigade” team. And as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, his laid-back soul is beloved by all who’ve basked in its blissful glow.
There’s something elemental about this music that really stirs the soul. Strikingly beautiful and instantly addictive, it’s a kind of funk-fuelled, melody-driven, groove-based magic. There’s a serenity and heart in the playing that radiates warmth and splendour, as if crafted for endless sunsets. His albums that surfaced on Mo Wax at the turn of the century have been treasured since their release and it’s two of his most vital LPs that we’re honoured to reintroduce.
The originals were quietly pressed on to a single piece of vinyl so we’ve worked closely with Tommy this year to bring you these fresh, limited editions. They have been lovingly remastered, cut nice and loud on to heavyweight double vinyl and presented in deluxe gatefold jackets.
Soul Food Taqueria continued Guerrero’s guitar soul but represented a step forward with its polished production and greater complexity of instrumentation. Denied the promotion it deserved upon release, it flew under the radar. It is now the most wanted record of his wondrous back catalogue.
Guerrero’s atmospheric touch and subtle guitar provide lush, glimmering pieces of musical texture. Within his spacious compositions, uniquely arranged instruments flourish alongside each other to create a languid soundtrack for halcyon days.
As ever, the diversity on display is beguiling. From bossa nova, samba and cumbia rhythms to understated folk, funk and soul grooves, this is another exotic set of mellow gold; perfectly represented by ESPO’s memorable artwork. Furthermore, the title’s hybridity reflects the intoxicating sweep of stylistic flavours served up, reminding us that, however tricky it is to categorise Guerrero’s special blend, it’s always a pleasure to indulge in something so creative and adventurous.

Guerrero closes this flawless set with a moment of true beauty. Restrained and graceful, “Falling Awake” is a pared back piece containing meditative guitar melodies set against melancholic piano arrangements. It brings proceedings to the most peaceful close.
