Aladdin is an atypical project at Versatile, even for Versatile's standards. In the base, the group consisted of Nicolas Ker — singer, chaotic poet (known from Poni Hoax, Paris, and his solo project yet to emerge) — and Gilbert Cohen, boss of the label. The two met in the studio after breaking up with their then-girlfriends, resulting in an album filled with inner pressure. “We were strong so we got lost”, released only on cd in June 2011, selling only 400 copies. And since then... nothing. But thanks to a one-week studio session offered by a brand of energy drink, they met again, attracting Syd Barrett-influenced guitarist Eat Gas as a new member, to record new material. Besides Eat Gas and his haunted guitars, other musicians were lured to the studio to contribute to the latest Aladdin EP: “Girls in Uniform”. Long jam sessions took place, featuring motorik drummer Mark Kerr, bass player Juan de Guillebon, and percussionist Francesco Lopez playing Brazilian percussions like the berimbau, and — hold your breath — the mouth harp. With a cast alike, you’ll understand the listening experience will be a hybrid one; in between rock, dub, kraut, interrupted by a break in the form of a strange fairy tale... Trevor Jackson has been a staunch supporter of the previous album, so asking him for a remix was an obvious choice. Glorified by the success of his compilation on the On-U Sound label, he swings in a remix dark as hell but with an unstoppable heavy groove. At last, Gilb’R delivers a smoky dub, one of the first recordings to roll out of his new Amsterdam studio.

Flip it over, and California Sunshine Boy Rocky delivers debut number two with Aquatic Maneuvers. Flowing pads and bubbling percussion weave together a lush, evolving soundscape. Organic and intricate, it shifts like underwater currents, with each layer wrapping around you like the warm embrace of an after-hours vibe you never want to end!

Back in 1988, disco rap aficionado and collector Dave Lee put together a compilation titled 'Back To The Old School', showcasing some of the best of the genre, most of which had never been issued before in the UK . Fast forward to 2025 and Dave's label Z Records has managed to procure the rights to a few choice old school cuts for a (sort of) follow up. The difference is this time Mr Lee has remixed and re-worked the songs for today's dancefloors while preserving their original flavour and integrity. In this first part of the series we have TJ Swann's 1981 jam 'Get Fly', re-tracked and taken into lo-slung yacht rock funk territory with a sizzling synth solo for good measure, a perfect compliment to TJ's smooth NYC flow. Terry Lewis & Wild Flower are up next on the A-side, with a boogie rich, mid-tempo stomper with a heavy funk bottom end and a message that still rings true in this day and age. Mike T's 'Do It Anyway You Wanna' finishes things up with a compulsive dose of jazz-tinged disco rap that goes straight for the jugular, super charged slap bass underpinning sharp sax and flute motifs while the rich tones of Mike T slide over the top. Dave Lee yet again providing a masterclass in production.

This Various Artists 12" opens with James Curd's funky, loopy remix of Saison's 'Feel This', which is a subtle good time groove. Saison then steps up with a remix of Yuichi Inoue's 'Night In The Room', which is a jazzy and expressive sound that rides a fat bassline. Flip it over for Saison & Piem's 'Fall On Me', which is a timeless and driving deep house gem with fleshy chords and seriously weighty dub kicks, then Local Options' 'Catch Hell' is gritty and punchy but seriously hot.

GAMM is proud to welcome New Zealand born, but these days based in Berlin, Philippa to our camp.
Over the last years, Philippa has been releasing amazing, warm, soulful, and highly distinctive dance music on labels like Slothboogie and Freerange as well as building her DJ roster. For her premier GAMM release,'Cloud Walking EP', Philippa has three amazing tracks that all mix up samples, live musicality, and vocals. If you put Moodymann and Henrik Schwarz in a blender somewhere in the Balearic Islands, you're kinda close. Either way, it's deep, organic, and almost kinda orchestral at some points. If you ask us, we would simply call it dance MUSIC.
Opening the EP is the title track 'Cloud Walking' which is a deep Fender Rhodes affair with vocals inspired by Aretha's Day Dreaming classic. Moving on, on 'Hear Me' Philippa shows off her musical piano skills with a lush and atmospheric deep house jam. On 'Return To The Red Kite' we follow a similar theme but with big warm orchestral strings, spoken words, and live guitars. Again, very Balearic yet very soulful and incredibly pleasant to your ears :)
