The St. David Jam trilogy is complete! Once again, the Italian producer plunges into the depths of his music mine, chisels out a few rough gems, and polishes them off until the glinting diamonds beneath are exposed. As advertised, this EP is disco through and through. “Sexy Funk '98” is a slinky shuffler that gets the engine running and “I Got the Music” is a schmaltzy twirler that settles the party squarely under the mirror ball. The reverse is both more feisty and laid back. It starts with “Where U Move,” a lighter number with a hint of tropical rhythms and beachy sunniness. With “The Connection,” the 12-inch comes to a joyous conclusion; the sampled crowd cheers and jeers sound like a dance floor begging for an encore at the end of a long night.

Andy Vaz's Straight Vacationing, his first full-length artist album, since the 2006 release of Repetitive Moments Last Forever..., registers as less a straight-up collection of dance-floor burners and more of a variety pack that mixes club tracks and full-fledged house songs. Listeners hungry for just ordinary 4/4 throw-downs will not entirely get their share of those, but they'll also get a whole lot more on this dynamic and well-rounded set of eight album tracks and that is exploring House Music not just as a simple one way street, but give you a very personal view of the music we call House. Straight Vacationing dives into the genre in all it's rich variety: From deep melodic, early Chicago influenced Acid House, Jacking-Jedi Mind Tricks to Disco-type grooves and last but not least excursions into Bizzaro World, with a vaz typical almost psychedelic experimental-edged Sound, it's all there. The album perks up the moment the first track, "Detroit In Me," appears and when its acidy bass line percolates so determinedly alongside a female vocal motif ("I just need to put a little Detroit in Me), leaving little doubt as to the style in question, but Vaz polishes the track's Detroit surfaces to a mirror-like sheen. A little bit similar to what Maceo Parker might sound like soloing over a funky Detroit-styled base, saxophonist Andreas Pasternack spreads his creamy playing all over "Stubnitz" and in so doing bolsters the album's already soulful character. The album's poppiest moment arrives in "Just Another Round," whose hooks Vaz powers with a lead bass line and sweetens with a chirping female vocal. The funky-as-hell bass playing and the music's cold sweat, not to mention the honk of Pasternack's sax, might remind listeners of a certain age of the J.B.'s, James Brown's '70s band. On the experimental tip there's "Fukuoka Liquid," a bubbly, acid-techno shape-shifter featuring a hammering groove overlaid with synth smears, and "Worlds Collide," an exercise in jacking acid-house - old school all the way. The Album features occasional guest players contributing to the house-driven sun-showers of for example "The Other Place" to a, well, whole other place - So what are you waiting for? Meet us there! Emitting his first material for Pampa, it's &ME - craftsman of all things deep and sturdy, at the same time connoisseur of emotive touch and virtuoso of sure instincts, one of the scene's central characters for a good amount of years now and one of the main figures of Berlin's Keinemusik-crew. The man has been hitting the bulls eye of public perception several times in the past, meeting everything it takes to get a crowd going with an intent on the detail when it comes to his arrangements and sound. These new two cuts seem nothing less than the essence of his abilities.
There is "In Your Eyes", the name lending A side to this EP, showcasing a rather pensive mood. It's just a few bars for the compound of kickdrum, tuned hi-hat tambourine and shimmering background noise until the first chords of an improvised piano-piece are tenderly laid upon the beat. Add a synth-motive coming back and forth and you'll have the main ingredients to this - in every sense of the word - floor-moving tune. Accordingly, the arrangement won't aim for an all too obvious sensationalism and rather opts for a flowing and intertwining call and response of its elements, ultimately resulting in a staggering impact anyway.
In comparison, "As Above So Below" on the flipside is adding a fair amount of emphasis. It unfolds in a dry and dense sounding beat-architecture that's suspense-packed with shaker sounds and subtextual field recordings. Most certainly, a slip-proof ground for this tune's centre-piece, a scale-riding synthbass sparking an almost anthemic trigger for floor-ecstasy. While details like subtle reverberating tapping and sparkling ambient textures sound like recorded deep down in a dripstone cave, the overall energetic layout pushes relentlessly to the heights of peaktime-grandeur. There you have it: "As Above So Below" - this tune works on every level.

Tradition is a big part of the ReKaB sound. Classic timbres run through all the tracks, but what James does so well is how he deploys and contrasts the elements. Piano chords layer late-night soul over syncopated bass. Comforting strings and ethereal pads upgrade your consciousness while your body remains rooted by Techno City square waves. With "House Warming" Andy Vaz returns with his 3rd full lenght album on his own Yore Imprint. Due to Andy's half Indian roots, he is lucky enough to owe a Beach House just outside of Mangaluru, South India in the State of Karnataka. - where most parts of the Album were written over a period of 6 months. In this totally isolated, entirely tourist free hidden spot, which had become Andy's second home over the past years, he found himself away from the usual routines of western life, to find himself in a position to simply sit down and create. The result is "House Warming".
As the Title suggest's - think of house, sure and no doubt- but here on this album, thought all the way thru from beginning to end. The result then is House Music in all it's aspects: The Soulful, the deep and the raw or if you want - Deep House, Acid House, Garage/Vocal House - the joints range from downtempo, elektro and even hip hop beats. Oldschool you may think? Maybe in spirit, as entirely produced with analogue synths & the roland series from 808, 909, 505, 606 to the original 303, but used in a modern studio environment. Andy Vaz is someone who has been around long enough to know how to programme his very personal idea's into the music - without denying influences such as Detroit, Chicago and New Jersey, to create something that goes further than a simple reflection of the past. The Label Boss returns to his own Yore Imprint with another stunning solo Release. These are Different Times indeed for Andy Vaz if the EP's three mighty jams are indicative of where his music's heading. The A-side's "Over Here (A Glance Over Prime Time Mix)" roars from the very first moment Vaz unleashes its steaming, Latin-tinged groove. A far cry from the techno the Yore label head once issued, the tune finds Vaz exploring straight up dancefloor territory with a dizzying house pulse that straight up rocks. Melodies and voices rise to the surface of the Dionysian broil and then just as quickly recede, leaving room for a driving bass line to gain the spotlight. The flip's "Hurry Hurry (Before It's Too Late Mix)" is classic deep house just as one expects on Yore. A jazz-inflected strut with Tilman Ehrhorn's sax playing, wailing over waves of rollicking piano playing and spirited vocal chants. The energy level doesn't flag for the disc's final track, "Bygone Times (Nostalgia Mix)," which stokes a fiery house swing with its locomotive pulse, futuristic synth patterning, and high-velocity bass lines. Vaz's music has never sounded more impassioned and energized than it does in these three tracks and consequently, just as one might predict, Different Times feels like it's over far too soon.
