As Pugilist, Alex Dickson has a rich history of fusing multiple genres to produce unique soundscapes that occupy the collapsing space between techno, house, breakbeat, and jungle. Melbourne producer Pugilist hitting hard with a four track EP for these dark days.. As you may be used to by now on 3024, the artist showcases his wide ranging pallette of styles and flavors, and "Blue Planet" is no different. The title track is a slinky UKG informed dub roller reminiscent of early Shed. Acid Flange is a menacing 8am (or later) track for the deeper dancefloor or headphones. Pugilist's collab with Tamen is on a uplifting dnb tip and as a digi only extra we have "Quick Fix", a slinky Detroit electro piece.

Part of the reason for the inception of this label was to platform not only my own productions, but also to have a vehicle for collaborators / friends and music I hold dear to my heart.

After the success of 001 I am very proud to present Ruff Kutz 002 - Pugilist & Tamen - Source.

Me & Luke immediately connected shortly after both moving to Melbourne around a similar time around 8 or 9 years ago. We immediately found a good working flow together and I can confidently say that we have both been massively influential to each other creatively. Source is our 5th collaborative EP and 10th record together as a production duo and I feel this EP is some of our best work yet!

The title track 'Source' is an ode to the more atmospheric Jungle anthems of innovators Source Direct - with a slightly dubbed out feel, retro aesthetics and nostalgic sampling. It culminates in a euphoric and hypnotic track, which whilst heavily referencing it's inspirations manages to be somewhat modern sounding.

In true Ruff Kutz fashion, the 2nd track on the A side 'Fuchsia' comes with an unexpected tempo drop - whilst continuing with the theme of the deep & melancholic tone of Source, but slightly more introspective and still within a jungle framework. The 2-step rhythm and melodic 808 bass underpins the carefully considered dubbing and melodic elements resulting in a unique track which could be compatible in many DJ sets across different genres.

'Limerick' on the B1 is affectionately named in the honour of Luke's great Uncle who sadly passed away around the time of writing this piece. It is a deeply personal atmospheric jungle track and might be one of our favorite pieces of music we have done together - it felt essential to have this on a home label and I'm really glad to have this on Ruff Kutz.

B2 'Miel' is a 160 Jungle track with 90s Hardcore leanings, a bit more playful in its approach with its fun drum edits and feel good pads and chords. This track elevates the EP with a welcome uplifting energy - nostalgic yet hopeful and whimsical and not taking itself too seriously.

We wanted to go a bit deeper with this EP and create something unique and more musical than we have previously released. In essence - delicate and dubbed out atmospheric groovers for those special moments on the dancefloor.

The newly remastered Terminator EP by Goldie's Rufige Kru alias is here. Originally released in 1992, Terminator is widely regarded as one of the most influential tracks in jungle and drum and bass history. Sitting at a pivotal moment in the genre's evolution, the EP marked the beginning of a journey for both Goldie and Metalheadz that is still going strong today. Meticulously restored from the original DAT tapes, this remastered edition brings renewed clarity and low-end weight to a seminal release. The EP's groundbreaking experiments in timestretching and cinematic atmospheres remain as impactful as ever, a reminder of why it inspired an entire generation of producers. Releasing on 2x 12" 180g vinyl with a full artwork sleeve on 1st August.

Nothing marks the mid-1990s more than this track "i9". Not because it was very popular, but mainly because of why the track was created in the first place. In 1995, Techno Music was still growing. Still introducing itself to new listeners around the World. It was just beginning to shake away its maternal connection to Rave Culture which began about 10 years earlier to have its own distinct characteristics. But as Rave had mainly entrenched itself in certain countries around Europe like the UK, Belgium and Holland, by 1995, all of Europe and now the Americas was blazing hot for this style of Techno Music. It was intense, we were intense. And the music we were making to be played was relentless.

By that time, the fluffy, happy go-lucky 4/4 beats of the mid 1980s were transformedinto noise-bleeding jack-hammers. Specially designed to infiltrate brains and to leave to prisoners alive. It was the dark matter we all were waiting for. The substance we needed to have. And with this special substance came incredible parties and events. DJs would strategically filled their heavy vinyl record boxes like they're going on a African Safari, with ammunition that would test any sound system. For that night at the Liquid Room in Tokyo, I knew I needed to have something that would end any question of whether Techno Music had arrived. I wanted to have something that marked the end and the beginning of something else. A new way to think about dance music.

That something else was called "i9".

This limited-edition unreleased version of "i9' is a new 2025 remix by Jeff Mills of the original tracks that marks the beginning of the 30-year anniversary of "Jeff Mills: Live At Liquid Room" Mix CD, where the first time"i9" was ever played. Not even pressed to vinyl yet, Mills played by the way of a 10" reel-to-reel tape player during his set. This release is the first element from a forthcoming re-release of the Mix CD as well as more anniversary facets.

It was only in 2018 that New York techno mainstay Joey Beltram revealed that he was the man behind 'SW37', a record which had been an underground classic since it first started doing the rounds in 1998. It remains an evergreen favourite almost 30 years on, which is why Damon Wild's Synewave is reissuing it here. The A-side is gloppy, dubby techno with impish percussion darting about the mix and drunken hits bring an off-kilter edge. On the flip, 'SW37B' is stripped back to pure deep techno serenity with deft ambient pads and a sense of unrelenting meditation that locks you in the here and now.

Pain Management welcomes London cult favourite DJ ojo, who arrives on the label with a hazy three tracker of trademark nether zone system music. On his most dubbed out full length to date, ojo span’s the full emotive spectrum of dub sonics with a range of both the eerie and more tender expansions of low end atmospherics, the resulting 12” equally suited for the club and the journey home alike.

‘Tongue Tied’ opens the record, a lysergic offering from the darker edges of dub music. A slippery fugue-state hit of narco-ambience built around a crooning, intelligible vocal refrain and chest shot sub weight. A real nightfall system pusher built to simmer in the early hours. It kicks off the EP on an amorphous, hypnotic note that sustains throughout.‘Oil Dub’ sinks deeper into the fog, melodic kinesis and expansive delays upholding an underworld of feedbacked percussion and tongue in cheek sub motion; a seven minute sound bath of ambiguous dub ASMR.

The B-side balances out the darker strains found on its counterpart with an overtly tender digidub closer. Clocking in at almost ten minutes long ‘Cloud Suck’ is a nebulous bliss of perpetually ascending late-summer warmth. The kind of liminal dream-state embrace that you wish would never end. True to the name, it evokes tender, dusk and dawn hued moments, a quiet ride-home flash of introspection on the way to or from some pursuit of meaning. Pain Management essential right here.
