Detroit native Javonntte Garrett, better known simply as Javonntte.
Javonntte has been producing music and DJing since the early ’90s. Having had a love for music since he was a child growing up, he turned himself into an independent singer, songwriter, producer and even a dancer, where he once toured with Aretha Franklin’s troupe.
Having collaborated with legendary producers Blake Baxter, Amp Fiddler and Andres in his formative years, Garrett has since spread his wings as a solo producer, with a steady string of releases on such labels as Traxx Underground, Quintessentials and Kai Alce’s NDATL.
This fresh four tracker, has been hand selected by us and each track brings something different to the dance floor, from the soulful vibes of WHAT? to the the bouncier and more melodic sounds of Good Vibration and Chicago.

Continuing to fly the flag for worldwide soulful dance-floor sounds, Jitwam’s globe-hopping label The Jazz Diaries unveil their latest signing, Detroit-based veteran producer Brian 'Javonntte' Garrett. Supplying body moving frequencies since the late nineties, Javonntte began playing piano at age 15 and honed his craft on tour with Aretha Franklin. A collaborator of Amp Fiddler and Luke Solomon, he has previously released on labels such as Eglo Records, Lumberjacks In Hell, Traxx Underground, Defected and Waella’s Choice. His debut on The Jazz Diaries see’s Garrett turn in five hazy, funk-drenched, party-moving jams. From the crunchy midi fanfare of the record’s opener “Reggietune”, through to the blissed-out sweeping synths of “Outerbound”, the EP packs a punch, keeping it’s rock solid, groove-laden sensibilities throughout. Javonntte even throws in a jacked up, Detroit-style reinterpretation of Christopher Cross’s classic track “Ride Link The Wind” (the EP’s first single, due for release April 9th). Trust, this one won’t leave your record bag.

The title track has the same instant magnetism as Hanna’s ‘Stranger’, which helped inaugurate Waella’s Choice in 2017. ‘Jazzpianodance’ takes a more broken approach, incorporating Javonntte’s love for jazz fusion. Something that would have felt right at home in the old Co-Op dances at plastic people.

A side is concluded with ‘Journey’, a proper soulful house track which keeps all of its energy in spite of a slightly more subtle approach.

Makin’ Moves bring this archived studio gem to the fore as it was just too damn good to be left sitting on the drive! Rewind back to 2005 and a chance studio meeting in London between Bugz in the Attic producer Afronaught aka Orin Walters and Justin Chapman aka Kemeticjust who decided to work on some tracks. It was a time in London where there was a huge melting pot of new sounds in the broken beat era / scene and that sound was at the forefront of London’s club scene including night’s like Co-op at Plastic People in Shoreditch. However, these sounds still have stayed the test of time and very prominent still in clubland today.
Justin’s classy vocal tells a political story about our modern times in American and feeling of oppression with in the Black race.
Phil Asher (RIP) at the time loved the track and decided to do his own “Restless Soul Dub” remix version, adding his characteristic drums and stripping the vocal back while also keeping the soulfulness of Kemetic’s original.

He collaborated with 2 good friends and Detroit legends, John "Jammin" Collins and Al Ester to create two unique edits that best suit their personal DJ style. He is no stranger to both jazz heads and techno innovators. He's played with UR's Timeline with Mad Mike, Carl Craig to jazz great Marcus Belgrave. "I wanted to make something that could be the theme song for a Detroit summer regardless of where you're going or coming from," Jon said. "I wanted to create a song that was perfect for cruising down Jefferson heading to Belle Isle, or being stuck in downtown traffic after a game." Jon Dixon took something so familiar to the people of Detroit and transformed it into a piece the world can dance to.
