Hawaii-born, San Francisco-seasoned, and NYC-based musician, DJ and vocalist Kim Ann Foxman returns with a warm and emotional EP ‘We Are Rhythm’ on her SELF:TIMER label that she runs alongside DC rave veteran Andrew Potter. The EP also includes a remix by Irish progressive house/trance master Spray. This release is the first of the many exciting releases on SELF:TIMER this year including the debut album of her band project Pleasure Planet.
Foxman explains: “We Are Rhythm was inspired by my latest DJ gigs where I found complete synergy with the dance floor. It’s magic whenever this happens, and I really wanted to make a dance EP that captured this feeling somehow with catchy vocals and prime time energy. I’m really thrilled to have Spray on this release! His remix of We Are Rhythm is fire!”

This time she takes the lead with ‘My Dog Has Fleas’. Don’t reach for the vet hotline quite yet; it’s actually based on a ukulele tuning technique popular in her Hawaiian stomping ground, but you’d never tell... A juicy, slinky, 80s-informed jam, it carries all the hallmarks we’ve long since come to expect from Foxman. As is the Pleasure Planet remix by herself and longstanding friends Andrew Potter and Brian Hersey as they bring on their atomic energy with fresh vocal samples, guitar, and cosmic flare you’d expect from such a hedonistic NYC gang. Deeper into the shoot we strut: ‘Shake The Bones’ is the dog-walking equivalent of a run on an unfettered, unpeopled, unlimited coastline. The elements. The energy. The space and fresh air; this doesn’t just shake your bones, it’ll shake your whole soul. As for Marc Piñol and Hugo Capablanca’s acid-wrenched C.P.I rework... The title track spins an intoxicating groove over Kim Ann’s vocals full of desire and lust, while '?Give It All You Got' ?fuses raw energy and dextrous percussion through h?er confident, evoca?tive words. Close ally and regular cohort Maya Jane Coles seamlessly remixes ‘I?t's You That Drives Me Wild’?w?ith her signature sound. The mood suddenly becomes much tougher during ‘ Magic Window ’ ? wrapping up the latest offering from New York’s finest lady of electronic music. Now getting a rerelease and rework for her unstoppable Firehouse imprint, complete with fiery remixes from a/jus/ted, Nick Simoncino and Richy Ahmed. Originally released on Andy Butler’s Mr International, Foxman’s liquid gold vocals on ‘?Creature’ w?ere her first endeavour since their time together in Hercules & Love Affair and a beautiful example of her adept technique to craft unique, synthinspired dance music. Undeniably her most recognised record, championed on Radio 1 and the like, it was never given the attention it deserved, leading to this special reinvention for her new label. “Creature is a jam that I hold very close to my heart,’ e?xplains Kim,”?so I'm really excited to be releasing it, along with brand new remixes, on my own label Firehouse. Sicilian musician Luigi Orofino delivers his debut single Amsterdam for Life and Death records, due for release on 19th May. The song features regular Erlend Øye collaborators La Comitiva, and comes together with a dancefloor friendly remix by DJ Tennis.
Amsterdam might sound effortless, but the laid-back groove and easy atmosphere that Luigi has conjured up isn’t something you can just pluck out of thin air. It’s taken everyone involved several years of playing together to get just the right marinade of Brazilian rhythm and Mediterranean musicianship. It’s a flavor they’ve mastered while on the road with Erlend Øye as La Comitiva, and their touring schedule has become a way of life. When the travel ban was finally lifted, Luigi headed straight to his friends in Amsterdam, and that freedom to travel once more inspired this song. That trip put the color back into life, and the result was this timeless slice of sunny samba rock.
The song has many collaborators, all operating under the gentle guidance of Luigi. Players from La Comitiva and I Calafatari gelled in the studio, also accompanied by Lucio Aquilina (NuGenea) and Luigi Scialdone (Fitness Forever), while the lyrics were written together with Alberto Locatelli. A breezy piece of Brazilian-tinged funk and easy soul, Amsterdam is more than the sum of its parts - it’s the sound of friends playing together and simply enjoying life.
The single is topped off with a remix by Life and Death chief Manfredi Romano aka DJ Tennis, who boosts the kicks while keeping the loose samba magic. The pair met in Mexico, and the kindred spirits immediately hit it off. After bouncing versions back and forth between Siracusa and also a studio in Paris, the final version was realized, full of floaty Rhodes chords and cavaquinho thrills that will lighten any dance.
It’s a testament to Amsterdam’s catchiness that many of Luigi’s friends are involved - the song is reflected in the people it brings together, and in this sense, it’s as much about the art of encounters as it is about the city.
