Mark Thibideau - The Fading Future
Placid aka Paul Wise is the chief operator at ‘We’re Going Deep’ – an online community and record label, born out of a lifelong affair with the many shades of electronic rhythm and obsession for collecting records since 1988. On a mission to share and release new music via his We’re Going Deep imprint: you’ll find only the best in Acid, Electro, IDM, Techno and Deep House for the dance floor, front room or even just your headphones.
Bringing the sounds of another highly experienced underground House and Techno fusionist to the next WGD solo series edition, Mark Thibideau is an enduring force. Hailing from Wallaceburg (Ontario) alongside his twin Brother Matt, he has been conjuring his own brand of sonic sorcery as far back as the 90s via various aliases and projects. Renown for his deeply soaked sound design that straddles the depths of Basic Channel’s aesthetic with a more altogether velours finish. Thibideau has graced the likes of Joule and Berg Audio in recent times, releasing some much sought after EPs.
Offering up 4 equally silk edged yet powerfully crafted dub infused grooves, going against convention and heading straight for the B side, the EP kicks off with the refreshing roll of B1 “Overcome Gravity” – a breezy flight through the upper reaches of the atmosphere. Combining tightly swung percussion with shimmering synthesis, all wrapped in undulating elements that basque in the warm glow of a mid summers evening. It’s a much welcome invitation. Accompanied with the slightly more introspective tones of B2 “The Fading Future” – minor chords lead to metronomic beats, leaving the bassline follow their path as the track twists and turns to take hold. An equally masterful trip to other worldly territory, you can’t help but admire his poise.
On the flip side, A1 “Circulate” ramps up the energy factor a notch as Thibideau unleashes a slice of pure understated, bass rumbling, heady workout all shot through a slow filter. The type of hypnotic cut that’s designed to do maximum damage at HIGH volume. Seriously restrained magic! It conjures up the magic of Mike Huckaby’s (RIP) Mix of “The Final Step”. Ending on the upward trajectory of A2 “Rotation”, here he continues his mission in the same vein but with more open frequencies – propelling to the outer reaches and leaving you wanting a whole lot more. Placid aka Paul Wise is the chief in command at ‘We’re Going Deep’ – an online community and record label, born out of a lifelong affair with the many shades of electronic rhythm and obsession for collecting records since 1988. On a mission to share and release new music via his We’re Going Deep imprint: you’ll find only the best in Acid, Electro, IDM, Techno and Deep House for the dance floor, front room or even just your headphones.
Bringing the sounds of a true pioneer of Electro and Techno fusion to the next WGD solo series edition, Carl Finlow is renown for seamlessly blending the rhythmic intricacies of Electro with the hypnotic allure of Techno: creating a unique sonic identity that resonates deep down to this day.
As a founding member of the iconic 20/20 Vision label, there is no doubting his pivotal role or pedigree in shaping the sounds of the Electronic music landscape, having released timeless music that has transcended genres over the past decades.
A master of the sonic journey that blends futuristic textures with a timeless essence, he sets out his stall with the creeping drawl of ‘Equi’ on A1, leading with heavyweight bass that’s set to cycle as metronomic snares pop to sci-fi synthesis that can’t help but make your body twitch. It is however the lush shimmer of ‘Aether’ A2 that really captures the heart and soul. A tour de force in emotive Electronics that arise from the depths of Atlantis to sweep you into a whole other moment of existential bliss. A superlatively crafted composition fuelled by the power of the DX-100, awash with melancolic strings and whispy melodies that are combined to perfection – ANTHEM alert!
Over on the reverse, the menacing rumble of ‘Affinity’ takes hold on B1 as Finlow exercises a certain prowess balancing airy textures with the visceral, creeping to the finish line with nothing but gold on his mind. Lastly, the 80s spectrum tinged tones of ‘Septagon’ B2 lead us on to another level as you’re lured in by downright gnarly bottom end, as glassy arps and atmospheric touches complete his vision. More

Placid aka Paul Wise is the chief in command at ‘We’re Going Deep’ – an online community and record label, born out of a lifelong affair with the many shades of electronic rhythm and obsession for collecting records since 1988.
For the latest solo series edition, Paul reaches out across the Mediterranean straights to the island nation of Malta to the formidable Owen Jay & Melchior Sultana – two of Europe’s finest purveyors of heads-down House and sultry deep grooves. Having both worked on solo projects and together for well over a decade now, their joint projects have graced the likes of Underground Quality, Moods & Grooves, Deep Explorer alongside their own imprint Batti Batti: a perfect match.
Laying down 4 cuts of impeccable late night fuel, the EP opens with A1 ‘Going Deep’ a subtle yet expansive 4/4 mover that holds the floor with a trance inducing lead and dubby effects. Sweeping in with sun kissed melodics and spacious percussion – A2 ‘Dub Setting’ is an ode to the Maltese morning haze if there ever was one.
On the flip, B1 ‘Chi-Town Love’ steps up a notch with tight drums and rolling bassline, as layered chords fizz away and build into their rhythm. Last but not least, B2 ‘The Beginning’ brings things home as punchy 909 percussion and stringed melodics tease for several minutes. Before heavy Juno bass action drops and leaves you jackin’ the freak to close out in style. More

Placid aka Paul Wise is chief in command at ‘We’re Going Deep’ – an online community and record label, born out of a lifelong affair with the many shades of electronic rhythm and obsession for collecting records since 1988. He’s spent the last 3 decades moving heads and feet at select venues, parties and fields across the UK and beyond.
On a mission to share and release new music via his label, you’ll only find the best selections in Acid, Electro, IDM, Techno and Deep House for the dance floor, front room or your headphones making the cut. For the next (and penultimate) edition of his various artist series, he turns to the talents of 4 superlative UK based producers. All of whom make equally excellent contributions to this latest missive.
Synonymous with the legendary Smallfish imprint, Bristol based artist Remote_ opens with ‘Ionic Shuffle’ - a fresh slice of 4/4 machine-funk swing. Invoking the motorcity spirit through a tightly programmed mix of Roland drum machines and crisp evolving lead, a hefty 303 bassline burrows it’s way to lead us to the outer limits. Following on with the graceful ‘Acid 13’, a delicate space aged cut from relative newcomer Steven Simpson. Airy stabs and star-shot sonics interweave to perfection as sawtooth waves find their place amongst the dubbed out ether.
Mancunian maestro J.S.Zeiter returns on the flips with the foreboding ‘Entropy’, a dense acidic chugger that revels in cyclical note action and a simple kick. Fusing minimal elements for maximal output, you can only marvel at the outcome. Rounding off with the eerie electroid infusion of ‘Flight to Mars’ from Suddi Raval, off-kilter synths hang in the air and deep bass shakes the foundations. More

Sticking to the format of 4 superlative cuts from equally talented producers, the quality remains unquestionably consistent on Volume 8 of his various artist series. Kicking off A1 in style with a family affair from Acid House aficionado Affie Yusef and his daughter Leila, ‘Dublovr’ is a Class A slice of pure late night chug that rides clockwork rhythms to a rolling bassline. As dubbed out synths ring out to lift you skywards – eerie sweeping undertones add another dimension. Not to be outdone, Bristol based Electro emissary Zobol delivers a pure slice of machinist joy on A2 ‘Sense The Consesus’, showing his ability to finesse and balance uplifting melodies with warm synthesis on this finest of jams.
Over on the flipside, Maltese producer Acidulant takes up the reins with the hushed tones of ‘The View of Her Shade’ on B1 – a thoughtful excursion into electro hinterland that’s a textbook lesson in making more with less. Last but not least, mysterious I Love Acid affiliate Type-303 turns out an exquisite IDM inflected serving of woozy broken Electronica on the mysterious ‘Knowhere’. Steeped in rippling melodies and aquatic atmosphere, the depth of focus resonates with a singular clarity that enchants on repeated listening. More

Dircsen - Imminent Flow
Placid aka Paul Wise is the leading light behind ‘We’re Going Deep’ – an online community and record label, born out of a lifelong affair with the many shades of electronic rhythm and obsession for collecting records since 1988.
Known to many in underground House and Techno circles, he’s spent the last few decades moving heads and feet at select venues, parties and fields across the UK and beyond. On a mission to share and release new music via his imprint: only the best in Acid, Electro, Techno and Deep House for the dance floor, front room or even just your headphones makes the cut.
For the latest We’re Going Deep solo series edition, Paul welcomes the mysterious talent and touch of Dircsen. Whilst little is known about this impressive producer hailing from Germany, his superbly rounded set of releases for the Hague’s Soundtravels and Croatian outfit Beef Records have certainly captured the ear and the imagination. With a penchant for the purest sounding waves of TB-303, soaring synths and punchy percussion – there’s nothing but magic when it comes to his work.
Kicking off with the hypnotic, dubby tinged tones of ‘Nothing Remains’ on A1 – the stripped back shuffle of percussion and shimmering stabs evolve in ghostly fashion as an evocative mood prevails: a purist exercise in restraint and calm. Balanced with gnarly intent of ‘Artificial Mind’ on A2, he lands the cutting SAW of his trusty synth to an unfaltering 808 groove. That simply grows in intensity and growl – burying itself in your psyche in the process.
B1 ‘Nervous Disorder’ drives on even further into twilight zone, unleashing a soaring lead to the punch of a swinging 909 that’s designed for pure pleasure – an ode to Chicago’s finest. Ending out on the mellower, house inflected tones of ‘Imminent Flow’ on B2. The cyclical roll of the melody and gentle sub compliment each other perfectly as airy pads lift the atmosphere and bring the EP to a dreamy conclusion. More

Mariko Katsuragi - Jasmine Dream
Surfing on the wave of 1980’s Nippon’s bubble of electronics and economics, fashion and the femme fatale, explosion of its pop culture and computerized technopop, and the world’s sudden fascination with everything Japan, a group of young studio musicians stemming from Tokyo’s downtown of Akihabara and Kanda came together for ad hoc recording sessions between 1982-1986. Their goal… produce the next domestic hit album, a travelogue of city pop inspired by the urban yet lonely sprawl of now globally admired Asia. Yet their vision of the concept album under the City Heights moniker never came to see the light due to the group’s sudden disbandment after the tragic loss of love.
Led by the guitarist come arranger-producer HASEGAWA Joe (Jô) and keyboardist KATSURAG Mariko, the City Heights sessions drew form Tokyo’s musical melting pot of early 1980s with a distinct blend of jazz, funk, boogie, spiced with a local touch of Nippon’s finest electronic instruments.
Now, restored, remastered and occasionally redubbed by Japanese music connoisseur Sten Saluveer aka MILDHANS, this second, highly anticipated volume will take you on a journey through the love-longing nights of Aoyama, to the festive matsuri bustle of Jô’s hometown of Kanda, the Jasmine dreaming of Taipei, and a quirky nod to a then legendary musical superhero. Repress!
With unprecedented prosperity and growing worldwide fame in broadcast, game, and synthesizers, the 1980s Japan entered a golden decade. New genre splashes from technopop, Pacifica, and AOR/City pop merged local sensibilities with jazz-funk and Latin influences. Spiced in sugary US West coast sparkle and boasting naive lyrics with opulent arrangements and cover designs, it beamed millions of listeners on the cosmic journeys of Japan and its connections with Asia.
Looking to bet on the city pop phenomenon, a group of young, just out-of-school in-house studio players gathered for ad hoc recording sessions between 1982-1986. Spearheaded by up-and-coming associate producer and arranger HASEGAWA Joe and keyboardist KATSURAGI Mariko their goal was to produce a hit album concept with a musical journey from Japan to Asia and beyond.
Just short of wrapping a handful of test-pressings for studio and radio executives and a few tapes of demo recordings, the sessions came to an abrupt halt in 1986 with a striking personal loss. With the band's consequent disbanding and members embarking on their decades-long sessions careers, the original tapes were archived and lost in the Akihabara district for decades…
…until Japanese pop culture *connoisseur extraordinaire* and producer Sten SALUVEER aka MILDHANS discovered a rare demo of the original recordings in one of Tokyo's Ebisu district's revered vinyl bars. After a lengthy period of digging and tracings for the original tapes, the lush soundscapes of KATSURAGI Mariko and HASEGAWA Jo are finally here to take you on a jazzy journey to City Heights of Asia.

Tokyo Riddim Band - Denshi Dub
Dubbed out new version of a Japanese reggae classic from 1982 by UK-based Tokyo Riddim Band. Recorded and mixed by the legendary Prince Fatty in South London, it's a fusion of past and present, East and West.
Three generations of female musicians from Japan come together, blending reggae drums, funky bass, and the smooth City Pop guitar, all magically dubbed-out live on stage. Tokyo Riddim Band is a culture clash phenomenon unlike anything else.
Championed by Gilles Peterson, and featured on NTS, Pitchfork and Bandcamp Daily, the group was born out of Time Capsule’s wildly popular compilation “Tokyo Riddim 1976-1985”. In just a matter of months they have sold out headline shows across London and supported Kyoto Jazz Massive at Jazz Cafe, conjuring a raucous, dubby dancefloor that brings the classic Japanese reggae sound of the ‘70s and ‘80s to life for a new generation.
Led by the inimitable pianist and composer Izumi ‘Mimi’ Kobayashi who featured on the original compilation, Tokyo Riddim Band are set to release a series of 7” singles in the coming months with more live shows planned throughout the summer 2024.
The first single, 'Denshi Lenzi', reinvents the Natural Mystic riddim of the original Japanese production, infusing it with dubbed-out vocals, sirens, and electrifying e-tom sounds, delivering an authentic reggae/dub experience with a distinct UK flair. More

A2 Momentum I (120 bpm) | 7:07 B2 Diurnal (122 bpm) | 8:17
A3 Nocturne (125 bpm) | 6:14
AND so the spotlight pans to Quantec. Having launched Neighbour Recordings with the
Life Is Rhythm EP from Base Pilot, the studio collaboration between label owners Birke
TM and Quantec, the imprint now turns to the latter for a solo follow-up with the muchexperienced
artist turning in the tasty Moments EP. A self-confessed lover of old-school
synths and their lo-fi beauty and emotion, this child of the Eighties naturally gravitates
towards deep, dubby, Detroit-esque vibes and much more besides. You can hear it again
in his latest work. The dramatic mesmerising synths of Inception are the most apposite
aural appetiser, setting the scene perfectly for the main event and dovetailing snuggly
with the dub-flecked deepness of Momentum I and the irresistible drive of the truly dope
Nocturne. The pulsating, near-menacing throb of Momentum II explores different
territory – that of techno – whilst the spacey, chilled groove of Diurnal is the perfect
comedown from the EP’s more heady business.

Textextext - (add your write up)
WE ARE definitely not afraid to switch things up here at Neighbour Recordings. In fact it's part of our blueprint, our mission statement, our philosophy. And here's the proof; the Court Vision EP, our latest release from label co-owner Birke TM. For this 'fresh as' four-tracker, Birke TM has penned a sonic love letter to the classic drum & bass that is dear to him and the originators who he has the deepest respect for. This is no pastiche though, rather a considered and meticulously-crafted take on and homage to D&B that is stamped with Birke TM's own deft touches, musical DNA and versatility. From the hypnotic and up-tempo opening cut I Dream Of Jeannie through to the emotions-tugging Eden, the distinctly-soulful tones of Sanctuary and winding down with the meditative Never Lose Touch, there is a deep sensibility running through the entire EP that is the perfect counterbalance to the pacy yet sublime breakbeat.

Repress!
In February 2021, Jan Jelinek's seminal album "Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records" turned 20. The anniversary repress, a double LP with two bonus tracks (B-sides from the Tendency EP, 2000), is a little late to the party.
What the press said about Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records:
“Don’t be misled by the title, though for there isn’t a finger-snapping rhythm c bebop lead anywhere on the album. Instead, Jelinek chooses to explore the visual effect moiré - two shifting patterns creating an implied third dimension - in the audio realm.” (Alternative Press)
“The title acts as explanation for the studio technique that provided the basis for this album, snippets of other people’s arrangements deconstructed through a sampler into loops and then splashed onto an audio canvas.” (ATM)
“Jelinek’s sound evolved out of his dislike for (and inability to play) keyboards.” (RPM)
“Jelinek has abstracted his sources beyond recognition, looping his millisecond samples into flickering patterns of sonic moiré laid atop a dub Techno framework. (...) Jelinek might as well have sampled a horn player’s hissing intake of breath – it would have been ‘jazz’ enough for his purposes.“ (The Wire)
“It’s a perfect inversion of conventional music, a sonic negative. Everything that would typically be foreground is moved back or pushed off the screen altogether, and the flecks of sonic debris that would normally be covered by other sounds are left to carry the melody and rhythm.” (Pitchfork)
“All you need to know is that these onomatopoeic non-specific songs (...) are warm, paradisical creations”. (NME)
“Listen carefully and you’ll hear textures slowly unfolding and mutating. Presuming you’ve not fallen asleep of course.” (iDJ)
“At times, it’s all a bit dripping tap Japanese water torture; so sedentary it drowns in its own motionlessness” (DJ)
“Loop Finding Jazz Records' is a genuine modern classic whose re-release is anything but a cynical mortgage repayment exercise. Consider this a second chance, then pretend you had it all along.” (Boomkat)
PS:
“I’ve been fortunate enough to see Jan Jelinek live once, at Tonic NYC (...). Wearing a black and white striped shirt, he looked like a nihilistic Charlie Brown.” (beachsloth) More
