An old friend returns to Pets. Three years after his ‘Polyphonic’ EP, Catz ‘n Dogz bring the legend that is Mathias
Kaden back on the label and the results speak for themselves…
Following his recent barnstormers on Avotre and Rekids, both ‘Square’ and ‘Distant Horizon’ deliver in that
unhurried, cosmic journey-like way Kaden has made his signature over the years: gentle layering, subtle moment,
palpable atmospheres but the drive and underbelly of a bulldozer.
‘Square’ kicks off the show with an eight-minute adventure into deep, warm undulating acid. Heavy subs, fluid
drums and a persistent spoken vocal texture, this one wraps you up like a cloak. ‘Distant Horizon’, meanwhile,
whips that cloak off so quickly it will send you spinning deeper and deeper into the celestial rabbit hole. A
10-minute Mathias epic, it warms up with a progressive rolling feel for a good few minutes before we’re suddenly
derailed into a trippy, hazy brew of weird bass bubbles and some rather outlandish spoken word. Poetry in high
grade technoid motion.
And the motion doesn’t stop there… Ever ones to get involved, Catz ‘n Dogz get their paws on ‘Distant Horizon’
and give it their own gritty, grainy, trippy twist. Two parts tribal, one part bass, all parts peak time, this doesn’t just
stare out at the horizon but flies you right over it.

return to Pets with this almighty four-piece that runs their entire groove gamut.
The long-awaited follow-up to their evergreen ‘For The Lovers’ EP in 2017, once again they not only
tick every box but tickle every inch of your music-addicted soul. Easing us in gently with a little cosmic
UKG, ‘Gwei Lo’ is a two-step teaser with all the magic we’ve come to know and love Black Loops for.
Deeper again we rifle through the styles like 12”s in a dusty crate… ‘Unity’ keeps the garage theme
but with much more of New York or New Jersey style vibe, especially in those epically thudding kicks.
‘Keep A Secret’ is just beautiful deepness with shades of Europe and the West Coast. Somewhere

Last but not least, we hit ‘Born In The 80s’. Don’t be fooled by the title, this ain’t no nostalgic

With friendship as one of the main precursors to their success, they present a warming and emotional album channeling the intricacies of ‘Friendship’ and relationships. Escaping to a wooden cabin in the Spanish countryside village, Cercedilla , which also shares the name of the opening album track, Greg and Voitek came together to create an album that re-wrote the Catz ‘n Dogz history book. Appearances also come from WhoMadeWho on the cool and breezy ‘Never Go Down’ , before later delving deeper into the ethereal voice of Jono McCleery in ‘Would You Believe’ and the eerie folk-esque vocals Egle Sirvydyte on

Sharing the same name as their countryside escape, introductory interlude ‘Cercedilla’ , eases the listener in with warm notes and raw samples of running water taken from the cottage that became their home. ‘New Love’ celebrates new possibilities and challenges that come throughout life; narrated with rumbling break-beat and euphoric synth lines. Big kicks and funky melodies in ‘This Feels Real’ , build anticipation for what is set to follow in the acidic elements of ‘Questions’ ; denoting the rollercoaster of emotion one can experience throughout the relationships we make.

‘Pioneers’ kicks things off. Bawrut’s personal homage to the foundation setters; laced with a syrupy spoken word, this is all about the physical and emotional reactions from a raw house groove. It’s followed by ‘Desert Island’, a dynamic acid attack that’s riddled with rich levels of 303 funk and a healthy dose of Trevor Jackson.
Elsewhere ‘Piano&Piano’ brings us back to dry land with crunchy loops that somehow manage to ooze funk, soul and staccato synth stabbed drama in equal measure… A fusion that’s accelerated insanely when the breaks kick in. The one and only Roman Flügel takes the lead with a wonked-out trip down ‘Basic Colour Theory’ lane. With a sly switch on the kicks and full emphasis on the alien encounter feels, his trippy take on ‘Don’t’ sets the perfect creative benchmark for what’s to follow.
Dig deeper for a bumping, stripped back warm and jacking twist of ‘It’s Happening’ by the currently unavoidable Rutilance founder DJ Steaw while Counter Records’ Pional breaks down their recent jolt of euphoria ‘Rave History’ and rebuilds it into a slinkier, house affair, repurposing every spine-tingle and skin-ripple Greg and Voitek coded into the original.
