The by-now seminal Is It Balearic label welcomes long-time Balearic boss Max Essa for another superbly horizontal offering that will take you to the beach no matter where you are. He is a regular on this label who has been serving up top tunes and compiling superb collections like 2016's 10-Year Anniversary comp for ages, and the quality levels never dip. This fresh four-tracker traverses gently breaking synth waves, undulating dubby undercurrents and gloriously sun-kissed synth work all in a soothing and meditative style.

Brand new Barcelona i mprint Balearic Ensemble hit the ground running with their premier plastic disc drop,

First up i s ‘ Matinee’, which takes that l aid-back 80s sound and washes i t through reverb racks and cascading

the waves, or a brush stroke on a canvas i n the afternoon sun.
‘Tempo Babadoh’ i s another massive balearic number, promenading and pirouetting i ts way across a vista of
club congas, wah guitar and deluxe synth sounds. Sliding nylon strings evoke memories of a l ate-night Mandy

virtuosic affair that’s sure to be a staple when the good times come.
On the flip we have Joe Morris’s ‘ Paraiso’ version of Tempo Badaboh. It’s a(n) NY hymn, a dusty psalm, a
stellar reimagining of the original which brings an 80s Chicago feel with all the savoir faire and finesse that the
Clandestino man has come to be revered for. Sizzling b l ines, crickets at dusk and time-tested balearic motifs

A year after his debut outing on the label, Max Essa makes a welcome return to Hell Yeah with the Han zon Roc EP, which is another of his impossibly laidback offerings.
Essa is of course the long time UK talent who has become a part of the Balearic mafia thanks to releases on labels like Aficionado, Music for Dreams, and his own Jansen Jardin. This is the second coming together of artist and label and is another timeless excursion far out to sea.
Opener 'Han zon Roc (Midori Coup)' is an epic 12 minute adventure that slowly awakens your spirit with new age guitar plucks and heavenly ambience before organic drums slowly being to drift into earshot. They grow ever larger as synths start to spray about the mix, hand drums pitter patter and big chords bring the soul-shine. It's like the soundtrack to an afternoon boat party all condensed into one brilliant cut.
How You Showed Me Everything' then gets super chill with lazy drum tumbles, bendy guitar lines and scattered hits. Withering cosmic chords colour the airwaves and its a track that will slow your heartbeat to nothing.
Last of all, 'Rain Bird's Alfalfa Jam' is a analogue drum work out with early 90s hip hop influences and diving basslines. It's light and airy, nimble and playful and of course filled with the sort of tropical rays that make all of Essa works so brilliantly escapist.

IIB reach their 40th release with label stalwart Max Essa's latest EP. Feel The Machine is a proto-house groove with touches of italo-disco. Chugging bassline and cowbells making it a real dancer. Panapolean Dreamer is a more downtempo beat driven affair with eastern strings on a mellow new beat vibe. The second side starts with Tall Shadows Walking Home. Again max explores the proto house sound all smothered in lovely electronic melodies. Twenty Types Of Dusk relaxes the tempo again. Trademark Max Essa Balearic. A killer ep. to celebrate 40 12 inch releases.

This is some of his very best work to date and demonstrates a producer at home at the controls and a real musician with a vision. Your carnival sounds like this...

Max Essa returns to Is It Balearic..? Home to some of his more Balearic moments most notably the epic Panorama Suite. The A side is Dovodah! which begins with some Nu-Med atmospheres and acoustic guitar conjuring up 80's Italian beach parties. The loose percussion and a heartfelt vocal (calling the unmistakable sound of Dovodah!) carry you along before dropping into an early 90's italian progressive vibe. Genuinely a real post sunset bomb. Doug Lee turns Dovodah into a more moody basement soundsystem banger -heavy bassline and distorted synths. This needs to be played Loud!
The B side Burning Palms is a moment of sexy strummed acoustic guitar and percussion. Sounding like A Mountain of One on a dusty desert vacation. Summers surely round the corner.
Hardway Bros Sean Johnston brings this tune back inside for some heads down dancefloor vibes while retaining alot of the original feel. Like a gypsy acid mid tempo house party. I want to go. IIB back with a bang

We are back with another panoramic journey. Max Essa needs little introduction, in our circles he is the shining light when it comes to the newer Balearic flavours we enjoy. M.O.D.F.D.M.V stands for 'Musica Originale Del Film Della Mia Vita' - Italian for 'Original music from the film of my life', and if this is what Max’s life sounds like then he is one lucky guy. 'Pow Wow' was described as 'Young American Primitive meets Mood II Swing by Dr Rob on his Test Pressing review which we thought summed it up quite nicely! 'Cloud Chasing' Early '90s Italo House and 'Zosimos on the Shore' sounds like Max jamming with Yellow Magic Orchestra. One word “Essential”

More Berlin, less Monacco. That's the ethos of the new Max Essa project, Jan Ken Po: Less sun, less sea, yachts and money; more twilight hour, basement clubs, up-tempo rhythms and dance floor politics. Hailing from the UK but currently residing in Japan, Max Essa's aptly name Jan Ken Po side-project is a welcome new addition to Essa's quiver of music and sounds. The primarily instrumental cuts focus on clean house-centric lines, irresistible deep-rooted grooves and Essa' flair at capturing that special something. 'NYC Set Me Free' kicks off the record in fine style; all tight cowbell rhythms and piano riffs over a walking bass synths and a catchy lead. Title track 'Unlimited Man' follows, with it's icy cool persona and infectious double-clap rhythm holding together the call-and-response keys. 'Civilised Gangbang' goes in swinging, bouncing groove and rising synths aplenty. 'Palm Beach boy Trees' brings the tempo down a notch and introduces the first sniff of a human voice with the vocoded phrase 'beach boys' looped over crunching synths and other sublime artifacts. An 80's phaser bass is actioned to perfection in 'Horny Diplomat,' followed neatly by the synth rock-disco / xylophone throwdowns of 'First Touch.' 'Metropolitan Scene' oozes class and restraint, and could be the backing track to a 80's vocal house classic. Finishing things off 'Rhapsody in Leather' allows Essa's trusty rhythm guitar to lead the limelight with some super-lean riffage. Essa's touched a new base with this record, and we're happy to be finally sharing it with you.

Max Essa, - How Do You Feel? feat D.C Mathias
Max Essa is a producer who has been shipping over his extremely coveted brand of disco and balearica from the land of the Rising Sun for some time now. Having had a long running string of sought after releases on labels such as Bear Funk, Nang, to Is It Balearic, Max is now making his Needwant debut with ‘How Do You Feel?’ which includes an awesome remix from Kim Ann Foxman. ‘How Do You Feel?’ starts off with bassy plods and gentle keyboard strokes that steer us longingly towards the smooth soulful vocals of DC Mathias. Topped off with light high-hats and the occasional flute twirl this release has summery feeling of lounging by a pool embedded deep within it. On the remix we have Kim Ann Foxman of Hercules and Love Affair fame who injects the track with a hypnotic deep house vibe. Taking the melancholic vocals from the original and setting them off subtly against a darker deeper bass line that takes its listener back in time. Hard to believe from the quality of the remix but this is Kim Ann Foxman’s first ever remix! Already getting plays way upfront on Beats In Space, this is sure to get you shoulder shrugging on the dancefloor in the early mornings! This is the fifteenth release from London based Needwant records. They have already built up an impressive catalogue from the likes of The Revenge, Mario Basanov, Soul Clap, Massimiliano Paglaria and more, but with this release they may have just raised the bar again.

Max Essa returns to Feel Music!!!! Its almost impossible to convey the scope of "Iberia Sequences" in a 45 second clip, so you gotta take our word for it, 10 minutes of pure bliss, the definition of a musical journey. On the flip side "Islands" mixes 80's club sounds with a touch of classic house and of course that by now classic Max Essa feel, while Mr. Fabrizio Mammarella on remix duties takes the A side up a notch with some acid disco dancefloor action.

Latest IIB release features the North Easts version of CSN Last Waltz. A double header, The first track Just Hold On is a collaboration between Last Waltz & Smoove. Heartfelt vocals over a pastoral rolling chugger, deep bassline folky guitar strumming making this a favourite at IIB HQ. On the remix Ess O Ess raise the tempo a little bring out the electric guitars and increasing the chug to almost Krautrock levels. On the Flip side Last waltz give us Tribute. A deep atmospheric acid affair. Mellow electric keys and percussion lull you into a false sense of security before the heavy kick and acid bassline drop with dark cello notes. Machete Savane take on the remix. Replacing acid for guitar and adding some machine groove this slowly builds and builds into a top bubbler.

Japans 9dw release their first track for Is It Balearic..? Right On is a super chilled loopy slo mo disco gem. Touches of soft acid and boogie bassline make this a certain for the more discerning dancefloor. The Mushrooms Project remix creates an ever growing tribal dubby trip with what sounds like a jews harp thrown in for good measure. Mesmerising. The B side features a track that has been an IIB favourite for a couple of years since it was heard live in Loop Tokyo. This slowave almost out of sync techy chugger is not like anything else. Evolving with analogue synths and stabs to become a heads downs stomper. International man of mystery Man Power adds man power to the track and creates a slightly darker journey into synth land.

This latest 12 comes courtesy of Phil Mison & Pete Herbert's much lauded REVERSO 68 project. BAA BOO is exactly the kind of blissfully dreamy groove we've come to expect from this accomplished production duo, musical, melodic and tailormade for sunnier climes. On the flip we have PIANO 89, pretty self explanatory really , but for the benefit of those not pushing 40, it's an old school house jam, drenched in the kind of Italo Piano hook that used to ignite late 80's dancefloors and is destined to do the same some 20 years on - magical

Somewhere between Center Parcs in Nottingham and the white sandy perfection of Formentera reside two men dedicated to the art of horizontal dancing. Their mums call them Ampo and Timm (funny names, those Notts lads), though we know them by their collective name of Coyote. In their minds eye, it is 1986 and there are leathery looking Germans with alarming posing pouches dancing to Simply Red records on the shimmering terrace at Ku club while down the road Alfredo is building his legendary reputation at Amnesia. Apart from the clued-up few, most of the Brits are billeted in San Antonio where the beers are cheap and the sunburn is plentiful. Coyote’s music, despite being produced in the east Midlands conjures up a world of sun, sea and ’80s glamour, while still sounding very much like today.
