About Versus: Monumental symphonic versions of Carl Craig?s? classic material, re-enforced and magnified by Les Siecles Orchestra. Iconic French conductor François-Xavier Roth is at the helm of the symphony whilst InFiné mainstay Francesco Tristano supports on piano. From an initial recording in 2010, the project evolved into a full album that has been tweaked further in the studio by Craig himself. The re-works reveal the timelessness of `At Les´ and `Darkness´ through tense yet fragile new arrangements, along with two original compositions by Tristano ? ?Barcelona Trist? and ?The Melody? Versus first took form as a captivating live concert on May 18th, 2008 at Paris? Cité de la Musique, featuring this very same line-up. The hedonism of club culture made a rare incursion into the hallowed grounds of more serious traditional music, merging the vocabularies and syntaxes of two genres that seem to be from their own faraway galaxies, but actually turned out to be more porous than expected as they collided into one another. A bemused Carl Craig recalls that the ?audience stopped just short of snapping their fingers to the rhythm. Everyone was literally on the verge of dancing, and François-Xavier was getting his first taste of that thrill that DJs get when they are playing for a room. We were like two kids rummaging through a candy shop ? I toured him through my universe and he showed me his.? The album?s release is also set to coincide with the launch of the Versus Synthesiser Ensemble, a back-to-basics live performance featuring six synthesisers and a piano, as directed by Craig. Detroit?s Movement Festival will be the tour?s launching pad, allowing for the possible grafting of a full symphonic orchestra as time progresses. The Versus universe is thus one that is predicated on transforming, remixing and reinterpreting, on creating of new forms of expression, but also on breaking down hierarchies to confront genres and worlds that seem further apart than they really are. An optimistic, if not idealistic project, with a title that was perfectly chosen to echo Carl?s mantra: ?the point is to change the audience?s perceptions, to surprise people, but also blow the dust off the conventional wisdom about music, its place in the world, and its audience ? without demagoguery and with fresh and new arguments.? This much awaited new studio album will be available worldwide on May 5th as a 2LP gatefold vinyl, a limited edition 3LP edition that incudes a bonus vinyl of stripped back versions (2000 copies only) and CD.

The Tronic Treatment remix starts slow but with careful and patient layering of melodies builds to an epic, peak time track which takes on an almost orchestral feel while the aptly titled Hypnotica Remix takes a slightly more aggressive, loopier and hypnotic take.

On the eve of the Carl Craig concert with the Chinake! From techno to classical, and back again - the Versus project continues to morph and evolve, with the release of four remixes from the eponymous album.
As InFiné Records' ten-year anniversary gift to itself Versus was conceived as a platform to continue the label's genre-bridging mission statement. After all, Carl Craig's canonical techno has always lent itself particularly well to hybridization with modern classical, jazz and classic rock forms - even muzak. From an initial 2010 recording, the project birthed a full-length containing two original Francesco Tristano compositions alongside symphonic versions of Carl Craig classics, reworked in the studio by the man himself.
Hot on the heels of a live synth-only tour that hit Sonar, Detroit's Movement and S4W Festival London in 2017; and celebrating the reprise in 2018 at more mythical venues (London's Barbican and Berlin's Funkhaus), we hand-picked a clutch of up-and-coming producers to push the project further into techno territory.
Known for classic remixes of everyone from Pat Thomas & Ebo Taylor to Mari Boine, his collaboration with Bugge Wesseltoft, jazzy-house renaissance man Henrik Schwarz brings his horn- and piano-heavy world music influence to The Melody, keeping everything as uplifting as it is banging.
Always kinetic and just a bit dark, French producer Antigone lightens it up a tad with his version of At Les, built on a vintage beat reminiscent of the early days of IDM, when the genre was still bridging "dance" and mind-melting ambient washes.
Fellow Red Bull Studios collaborator (and founder of Berlin-based label Love Pain Sunshine & Rain) Benedikt Frey brings his pastoral birdsong to a half-driving, half-ambient rendition of Dominas that retains enough strings to keep fans of Tri Repetae-era Autechre blissing throughout.
The EP is book-ended by The Melody, for the final track another version of in the form of a harder slice of functional, dancefloor-ready techno by Dutch producer Tom Trago. We're out of synonyms for "banger", but this one will definitely please the DJs - and crowds.

2014 remastered version of this 1997 Carl Craig classic on Planet E. Essential!! "Revolutionary art is determined...by how much it revolutionizes our thinking and imagination; overturning our preconceptions, bias and prejudice and inspiring us to change ourselves and the world." After a short introduction, "Televised Green Smoke" floats in on a haze, working through the classic blueprint of dance music -- the gradual addition of layered, complementary elements -- until it reaches a soft peak. "Red Lights" works a slow-grind breakbeat, cycling through the Paperclip People oscillator with strings in the background and an atmosphere reminiscent of The Godfather. "Dreamland" and "Butterfly" are closer to "traditional" Detroit productions, sharp and focused but rather melancholy; the former is a reach-out to the British-Detroit axis (As One, Black Dog, B12), while the latter evokes the classic late-'80s productions of Craig's friend Derrick May (who co-produced a later track, "Frustration"). The Maurizio dub "Dominas" is nocturnal and unhurried, even despite the insistent beat and a female vocal sample repeating the title one word after another. Another classic, "At Les," balances a few gently cascading chords with a rhythm program that keeps pushing the track forward and faster.

The album spans seven tracks of bass, techno, and experimental music, with Abdelwahed consulting with masterminds like Tunisian composer and multi-instrumentalist Khalil Hentati, aka Khalil Epi, and Iraqi-British multi-instrumentalist, composer, and researcher Khyam Allami, as well as Egyptian mastering engineer Heba Kadry, to help realise her vision.
Jbal Rrsas starts with the seductively apocalyptic opener, The Key to the Exit, a deconstructed sha’bi production. With tracks like Six as Oil and the delightfully intense Violence for Free, Abdelwahed leads users to a desert rave, where industrial rhythms are left unbridled. Abdelwahed’s vocals on Complain and Pre-Island are powerful and exposed, confidently placed on dizzying avant-garde productions. The Wire previously said “[Khonnar is] an assured debut that sits on the edge of a whole swathe of possibilities, not only sonic but also geographical, social and political.” With Jbal Rrsas finds Abdelwahed deftly navigating through those possibilities, frequently pushing against genres, labels, and social identifiers, while elevating club music to otherworldly heights.

Madíbá brings together twelve songs in the form of fables, dedicated to the theme of water, in which his high and angelic voice dominates, carried by delicate guitar, synthesizer melodies, and sober brass arrangements. The cuts are diaphanous and nevertheless modernist songs, which testify to a contemporary and poetic Africanity at the crossroads of soul, folk, and electro.
Blick Bassy’s albums have a humanist and universal dimension. His fifth and new solo album, titled Madíbá, which means water in the Douala language of Cameroon, comes in the form of songs close to the fable, in which Bassy explores "a theme shared by all” of water, the source of life. The fables of the album, all born in the imagination of Blick, explore in a more concrete way different themes related to water, its rarity, its necessity, its energy or its vital power. The twelve songs all bring together a series of figures, animals, or various characters, embodied in turn by Blick Bassy. "I have fun stepping into the shoes of a bird, a cat conversing with an elephant, a flower worrying about its declining beauty, a monkey looking for a spring or a storyteller with his grandchildren. In these texts, water can even take on a human appearance.”
Beyond the tale, the texts of the album also refer to our climate crisis, or to the problems of access to water, a way for the artist to approach serious subjects through a poetic form which avoids didactic or moralizing speeches.

On Al Hadr, Sabrina Bellaouel taps into myriad influences: from spirituality, astrology to club culture, romance, the body and self-love. Creating a balance between places, identities and sounds is a huge part of the charm of Al Hadr. As a true Libra, she’s finding a balance between honoring her roots and carving out her future.
Following two solo EPs, also on InFiné — 2020’s We Don’t Need To Be Enemies and 2021’s Libra — the French-Algerian producer and vocalist’s unique style of electronic R&B blossoms with Al Hadr, a 13-track album featuring collaborations with dance producer Basile3, experimental club DJ and writer Crystallmess, jazz musician Monomite and pop singer Bonnie Banane, among others.
Born, raised and based in Bagneux, outside the southern périphérique of Paris, Bellaouel lives between worlds. At home, her Algerian heritage and Muslim faith have fused tight familial bonds and a keen sense of history and culture; as “Berbers”, she speaks French and Arabic. In her headphones, she finds comfort in the sparse experimentalism of Radiohead and romantic tales of Jill Scott. On the hot club dance floors of Paris, driving house beats connect her to her body.
In swirling these private and public passions together on Al Hadr — which translates from Arabic as “the present time” — Bellaouel is the most vulnerable she’s ever been on record. Classic neo-soul and silken R&B blend with club electronics. Tender harmonies are sung and rhymes are spoken in English, French and Arabic, exploring love, faith and identity. Samples of drum machines are the backbone for wisps of woodwind, strings, keys and environmental ‘found sounds’, including Bellaouel’s own live recordings.

Scaphandre' is the story of an image found in a lost time on the internet a few years ago. It inspired two sound pieces conceived so that one can dive into it as into the sea.
Once their composition was finished, I looked for the origin of this image. It is one of the very first submarine pictures in history, taken by Louis Boutan in 1893 in the bay of Banyuls-sur-Mer... my home town. The original photo as well as a fantastic series of archives documenting this event can be found at the Arago Laboratory, where I often went as a child, after school, amazed by what the researchers were showing me. They just had never told me this story.
This is how this record found its scenery.

The two pieces Gaspar Claus brought together on Scaphandre form an abstract and mysterious B-side of Tancade, released in the fall of 2021. Both composed during the long, initial period of his first album's conception, this mini album's two episodes, each tinged with minimal and noisy abstractions, unfold more than 10 minutes of total immersion into the abyss of experimental music on the first, and drone for the second.
In their own way, these tracks are a form of raw, unadorned escape, a film negative of the cellist's surface creations, which we know are bathed in sunshine and fresh air.
'Inside' is a moment of distraction while Gaspar worked on a film soundtrack. The title took time to mature in the musician's head, abandoned then picked up again and modified until it found its signature progression of strings where time seems suspended. The reverberations dress its fourteen-minute sound canvas in a way that is reminiscent of endless, sub-marine darkness.
'Beyond' was recorded in three takes during a writing session for his first album with David Chalmin in the Basque Country. The post-production phase required a long process of refinement to obtain this invasive sound material that cuts the listener off from their real environment and films them with a hypnotic feeling of depths and apnea.

Frieder Nagel invites his listeners to get lost in a universe that spans from euphoric to devastating excitement. He is known for managing projects in venues ranging from theatres to clubs, for concerts to audio-visual experiments - working with artists like David August, La Boum Fatale and Daniel Brandt (Brandt Brauer Frick). The first time he appeared on stage, in 2016 at Berlin's infamous Radialsystem V, armed with several synthesizers, effects, drum machines, one grand piano; and backed by the German Symphony Orchestra (DSO). This critically acclaimed debut was streamed by Boiler Room later and led to further collaborations with Philharmonie Essen or his ensemble show at Reeperbahn Festival.
Now finally Nagel ´s first solo work “Distract Robots” will be released by French label InFine´. This 12" has become an album in miniature with a final polish by mastering guru Zino Mikorey – known for his work for Nils Frahm ´s All Melody. This EP offers up a mystical world, full of warm synths and detailed sound clusters morphing into each other to form utterly dark and dystopian ballads. Nagel gets lost in obsessively endless sessions with his instruments. He isolates himself and spends night after night drifting away from reality. The result is that his tracks carry moments of utterly deep relief and deliverance, as well as despairing sadness and stoical escapism.
Having grown up in the music scene of Southern Germany, Nagel spent his childhood mainly backstage - sleeping in cars while his father played in jazz clubs, or bored out of his mind during the endless orchestra rehearsals of his mother. While he never took proper classes to learn an instrument, the young autodidact could always count on his hearing. After moving to Berlin at 17, Nagel soon started working in the music business - at first with small student-jobs and later as a producer. He created his studio Resonant Workshop, a self-built wooden room-in-room construction to craft music and sound design.
After years of being in charge, controlling the process of artistic creation for others, it was not always easy for Nagel to focus on his own music. No sooner had he started to press record - he had to leave his studio due a serious water leak from ceiling causing him to be displaced to create. Trying to turn this throwback into an advantage, Nagel focussed mainly on improving his improvisational skills and started to work in different locations, and musicians he found in many directions. As a result, Distract Robots creates its dense atmosphere out of all kind of musical sources like field recordings, jam sessions, and analog machinery.
Despite its melodic complexity, improvisational skills and vivid drums, Distract Robots is rooted with one foot in the basement of an underground club featuring loops building up with unescapable pressure, majestic voice samples, and analog sawtooth wavefronts – while still reminding listeners of an electrified music combo playing live. This EP has become Nagel ´s long-awaited step away from behind the studio desk to finally addressing the audience directly. Lining up with the exquisite cast of euphoric-melancholic artists from InFine´ - like Rone, Apparat, Arandel or Murcof - inevitably feeding his hunger for acoustic sessions and electronic gear, the audience can be sure to hear more from Frieder Nagel.

With her debut album Self Fulfilling Prophecy, released by InFiné last June, the French producer closed the
loop on the first sequence of her life. A sequence filled with transformations, encounters and
collaborations: her successive moves to Montréal and Berlin (where she was closely involved with feminist
activism), and her foundational residency at Detroit’s Underground Resistance, among others, informed
her authentic, global-minded techno aesthetic. The aptly-named Self Fulfilling Prophecy is thus the honest
expression of a artist who has found herself at the center of techno activism, an eloquent testimonial to
“how today’s electronic is made.” With the necessary hindsight and application, La Fraicheur has created
an opus that blends raging techno with more atmospheric moments. An opus that is now being reviewed in
light of the electronic scene’s main pillar: the dancefloor.

On the A-side, an activist of the Polish scene, VTSS is a leading figure in the protest against conservatism,
racism and ambient homophobia and one of the founders of the Brutaz parties in Warsaw. She rocks “Eau
Troubles” in an "industrial" soundscape, as disturbing as fascinating. Noncompliant (also known as Dj
Shiva), an icon of US techno rave scene of the 80s, today widely supported by the demanding international
Technosphere (with releases on Dark entries or Fidel Two) is animated by the same fury instilled by worldly
injustices. Her remix for “Renegade” is propelled by an unstoppable steamroller of offensive analogic
sounds and a weird hi-hat.
On the flipside, Serbian producer Scalameriya (Genesa Records, Perc Trax) takes over “The Movements” in
a chokehold that evokes techno’s struggle against space and bodies. In conclusion, Fritz Windish & Nayan
Soukie divert the metronomic kick of “The New is Not Born Yet”, with a good dose of insouciance tinged
with psychedelism, classic ingredients of the Berlin set deejays at sunrise.

The flamboyant and off-kilter title track from Rone's latest album, "Mirapolis" is one of the last
solo tracks that the producer composed in the spring of 2017: "it's one of the rare tracks on the
album for which I thought about the live performance. While putting the final touches to it in the
studio, I imagined myself at festivals via memories of previous tours. I wanted to record a festive
track, which completely stands by its ‘funfair’ vibe.” With this new four-track EP (including three
remixes), combined with a new video by Aurélie Castex, Rone extends the carnival of electronic
cultures of his latest musical citadel to the dancefloor – and our screens.
Johannes Brecht, shadow craftsman of the Hamburg label Diyanamic's studios, offers a refined
reading throbbing with cerebral pulsations. Appropriating the main theme in a subtle way, coated
with multiple harmonic layers, his textures alternate white noise with organic basses that builds up
to a delightfully classical cello outro.
German-based figurehead of the South American scene, Comeme label boss and founding
member of the late Closer Music project, Matias Aguayo, has never ceased throughout his career
to set off little revolutions on the planet of demanding dancefloors. Playful and wild, Aguayo
sweeps in with a ritornello of chiptune sounds and orchestral arrangements, washing it over with a

About Versus: Monumental symphonic versions of Carl Craig?s? classic material, re-enforced and magnified by Les Siecles Orchestra. Versus first took form as a captivating live concert on May 18th, 2008 at Paris? Cité de la Musique, featuring this very same line-up. The hedonism of club culture made a rare incursion into the hallowed grounds of more serious traditional music, merging the vocabularies and syntaxes of two genres that seem to be from their own faraway galaxies, but actually turned out to be more porous than expected as they collided into one another. Everyone was literally on the verge of dancing, and François-Xavier was getting his first taste of that thrill that DJs get when they are playing for a room. The album?s release is also set to coincide with the launch of the Versus Synthesiser Ensemble, a back-to-basics live performance featuring six synthesisers and a piano, as directed by Craig. The Versus universe is thus one that is predicated on transforming, remixing and reinterpreting, on creating of new forms of expression, but also on breaking down hierarchies to confront genres and worlds that seem further apart than they really are. An optimistic, if not idealistic project, with a title that was perfectly chosen to echo Carl?s mantra: ?the point is to change the audience?s perceptions, to surprise people, but also blow the dust off the conventional wisdom about music, its place in the world, and its audience ? without demagoguery and with fresh and new arguments.? We Release Jazz (WRWTFWW Records' new sister-label) is proud to present its first release, the official reissue of Ryo Fukui's highly sought-after masterpiece Scenery (1976), sourced from the original masters and available on limited edition 180g vinyl mastered at half speed for audiophile sound and on digipack CD.
Unquestionably one of the most important Japanese jazz albums ever recorded, Scenery reveals Ryo Fukui as a miraculously brilliant self-taught pianist fusing modal, bop, and cool jazz influences for a very personal, dexterous and game-changing take on classic standards made famous by Bing Crosby and John Coltrane among others. From "It Could Happen To You" and its serene and calm intro which magically flows into a jubilant and upbeat piece, to the out-of-this-world piano solo of "Early Summer", or the incredible teamwork of "Autumn Leaves" where Fukui leads Satoshi Denpo (bass) and Yoshinori Fukui (drums) into groove heaven, every single note on the album oozes precision, confidence and flair and every single section slides seamlessly into one another, creating a supreme and elegant blend of jazz. Often compared to McCoy Tyner or Bill Evans, Ryo Fukui was a genius in his own right, a true master of his craft whose perfectionism gave birth to some of the greatest music ever recorded. Scenery is his magnum opus and an absolute must-have.
The Hokkaido wizard-pianist followed Scenery with the soulful gem Mellow Dream (also available on We Release Jazz) in 1977. He then focused on improving his live skills, often performing at Sapporo's Slowboat Jazz Club (which he co-founded with his wife Yasuko Fukui) and releasing 2 live albums. Ryo Fukui sadly passed away in March 2016, leaving behind a legacy of works that is sure to captivate jazz lovers for generations to come.

We Release Jazz is ecstatic (purrrr!) to announce the official reissue of Hiroshi Suzuki's glorious jazz-fusion-funk Holy Grail Cat (originally released in 1976), sourced from the original masters and available on limited edition 180 gram vinyl mastered at half speed for full audiophile sound, as well as on digipack CD. Both versions come with liner notes by Teruo Isono.
Cat was recorded in October 1975 at at Nippon Columbia Studio, while Hiroshi Suzuki was visiting his home country of Japan after moving to Las Vegas in 1971 to play with Buddy Rich and perfect his craft. Back on his old stomping grounds, the man known as Neko (Cat) immediately reunited with his dear friends for an epic two day session of groove magic. The chemistry was still intact. The skills and style had grown.
The result, Cat, is a smooth masterpiece, a deep and soulful affair where stunning trombone solos by Hiroshi Suzuki flirt with Takeru Muraoka's heavenly saxophone and the sensual rhythm section of Hiromasa Suzuki (keyboards), Kunimitsu Inaba (bass), and Akira Ishikawa (drums).
Celebrated in jazz collectors circles, in the lofi beat scene, and among music diggers around the world, Cat has become one of the most sought-after Japanese jazz albums of all time and, much like Ryo Fukui's Scenery, has fascinated old and young generations alike.

Berlin's own Steffen Linck, a multi-instrumentalist known as Monolink, announces his debut album Amniotic, due April 20th via Embassy of Music subsidy Embassy One.
It is the experiential nature of Monolink's music that defies the muddy definition of modern live electronic music. Armed with a singular blend of Berlin underground culture with the pop-leaning sensibility of American electronica, Steffen transports listeners into his own realm of sonic exploration. The music is pillared by emotive guitar tones, analog synth stabs and, for the first time, his own vocals - acting as a singular point of departure for this budding talent.

Berlin's own Steffen Linck, a multi-instrumentalist known as Monolink, announces his debut album Amniotic, due April 20th via Embassy of Music subsidy Embassy One.
It is the experiential nature of Monolink's music that defies the muddy definition of modern live electronic music. Armed with a singular blend of Berlin underground culture with the pop-leaning sensibility of American electronica, Steffen transports listeners into his own realm of sonic exploration. The music is pillared by emotive guitar tones, analog synth stabs and, for the first time, his own vocals - acting as a singular point of departure for this budding talent.
Amniotic stands as Monolink's first complete body of work, following his 2017 EP 'Burning Sun' via Sol Selectas, and 'The End', a collaborative record with Acid Pauli in 2015.

What an unbelievable record. From the wild cover to the iconic breakbeats, Roots from Ian Carr’s Nucleus is one of the dopest albums we know. This is seriously thick, funky-prog jazz-rock heaven. Originally released on Vertigo in 1973, other than a couple of versions at the time for other territories, Roots was never re-pressed since so it’s gone on to become another one of those impossible to find records.
Maybe it was a little too out there for the time, but it’s aged very, very well indeed and this Be With re-issue, re-mastered from the original analogue tapes, shows off just why this deserves to be back in press.
Genius trumpeter and visionary composer Ian Carr was one of the most respected British musicians of his era. He was a true pioneer and saw the potential in fusing the worlds of jazz with rock, just as Miles Davis and The Tony Williams Lifetime did in the US. In late 1969, following the demise of the Rendell-Carr quintet, and tiring of British jazz, Carr assembled the legendary Nucleus. Regarding music as a continuous process, Nucleus refused to “recognise rigid boundaries” and worked on delivering what they saw as a “total musical experience”. We can get behind that.
Under bandleader Carr, Nucleus existed as a fluid line-up of inventive, skilled musicians. This constant evolution and revolution was all part of the continuous musical exploration and discovery that took jazz to new levels.
Working together with producer Fritz Fryer and engineer Roger Wake, the seven compositions by Carr, Brian Smith and Dave MacRae that make up Roots flirt with perfection, and Nucleus at that time made up of the cream of 1970s UK jazz with Brian Smith on tenor saxophones and flutes, Dave MacRae on piano and electric piano, Jocelyn Pitchen on guitar, Roger Sutton on bass, both Clive Thacker and Aureo De Souza on drums and percussion, Joy Yates delivering the vocals and of course Carr on trumpet.
The spellbinding title track immediately renders the album indispensable. Riding the illest of loping breakbeats, “Roots” is low-slung, doped-out heist-funk. An absolute monster. If it sounds familiar then that’s likely down to it being sampled by Madlib for Lootpack and Quasimoto’s “Loop Digga”, as well as by a whole host of beat manipulators. “Roots” conjures prime instrumental hip-hop / beat music, only 20 years ahead of its time. Truly, these are the roots. Through sinuous bass, twinkling keys and a hypnotic guitar riff, a smoky brass motif weaves its way into a gloriously deep haze around Carr’s solos. “Roots” is over 9 minutes long, but there’s not a single wasted second, not surprising given that this is a condensed version of an originally 40 minute long commissioned composition.
The soothing vocal fusion delight of “Images” follows. Meticulously constructed, with gorgeous flute work from Brian Smith, with Joy Yates’ silky vocals and Dave MacRae’s Rhodes never sounding better. The cool, driving “Caliban” closes out the first side. Originally the third movement in a four part commission to celebrate Shakespeare’s birthday it stands up on its own, all robust rhythms and blended brass. Keyboard colour and Carr’s trumpet are splashed across the funk drums and basslines (and there’s even some bamboo flute). This really is fusion: the elements of jazz and rock coming together in beautifully synthesis.
Side two opens in riotous fashion with the short, thrilling samba of “Wapatiti”. Next up, “Capricorn” forms a smoothed-out, jazzy constellation. Mellow and dreamy, its twinkling percussion and languid horns slowly build the vibe before head-nod drums and a killer bassline enter the fray. With a distinct heaviness that Black Sabbath would’ve envied, “Odokamona” is a venomous slice of riff-soaked jazz metal (yes, you read that right), elevated by Carr’s wah-wah horns.
The album closes with MacRae’s exceptionally cosmic “Southern Roots and Celebration”. Very much in conversation with Weather Report, it opens as a languorous, spiritual jazz of chiming keys and serene guitar that turns slowly, gorgeously into a mid-paced, brass-laced banger. It’s another sure-fire party starter and the sound of the band having a righteous blast, building an ecstatic chaos that ends with Yates screaming.
And of course we need to talk about Keith Davis’ cover for Roots. Perhaps the coolest record cover of all time? Certainly one of the most bonkers. Just your run-of-the-mill high-gloss, acid-tinged airbrush dystopian/utopian living-room party scene. Consider this your chemical flashback trigger warning.
Front-and-centre the hip-to-death green robot holds court with their giant ball of yellow barbwire wool, hooked up to… something(?) being teased out from under the stairs (probably best not to ask). A thoroughly zoned-out, long-legged Pop Art party-goer lounges half-plugged in to the painting behind her as a pair of legs flail into shot from the the top of the stairs opposite. We won’t even begin to guess what the chap’s up to in the middle, but the view out of the windows is rather nice, and someone’s already got the hoover out ready to tidy up. All of the Nucleus sleeves are something special, but this particular one? Crikey.
This Be With edition of Roots has been re-mastered from the original Vertigo master tapes, Simon Francis’ mastering working together with Pete Norman’s cut to weave their usual magic with these wonderful recordings. The crazy cover has been restored at Be With HQ as the finishing touch to this long overdue re-issue.

Research Records indicate their inclination for cosmic instrumentation and kraut pervaded polyrhythms once again with an introduction to newcomer Glass Beams. Recorded at the beginning of 2020, Mirage is the first release from the artist, issuing four compositions that lend from a profusion of sounds and influences. The album's opener and title Mirage arrives with a coiling vocal mantra that conspires with a sliding bassline and transcendent synthwork, reminiscent of early 70's prog jams yet inverted and futuristic. Taurus is a brisk arrangement, steeped with spaghetti-western elements and space-jazz to pave the way for the agile Kong. Rife with psych-fusion guitar phrases and instrumentation, Kong unfolds like a forecast lysergic voyage. The finale Rattlesnake nudges the serpent with intergalactic scales and spellbinding riffs. We may not know much about the enigmatic Glass Beams but Mirage is one epic inauguration, leaving the listener with more questions than answers.

The 1970s. The Vietnam War is slowly coming to an end; the RAF thrives and prospers;
the first Achtundsechziger ('68 protestors) are actually
planning to march through the institutions; rock and roll is getting heavier;
and hardly noticed by the mainstream public, some West-Berlin musicians
develop a world of sound, which later eventually became labelled as
“Electronic Music”.
Indeed, there was nothing electronically generated initially,
let alone even digital. In the beginning they simply named these
sound-mixtures "electro-acoustic". These compositions of slowly evolving
soundscapes relating to the Minimal Music concept created a meditative
mood. This was new. This was the Berliner Schule (Berlin school).
Being responsible for popular music at a radio station in the 1970s
was an absolute dream job. At least that’s what it was like at RIAS Berlin
(Radio In the American Sector). There was no quota, no pressure,
no hit-terror, and we just invited the artists, bands and musicians we liked
to the studio. The artists from next door. That’s how I got to know Manuel.
He was living right on the Ku-Damm (Kurfürstendamm), right in the city
centre, but in the rear building, shielded from the noise.
Manu didn’t have a sequencer. Everything that sounded like a sequencer
was his highly focused guitar work. The slowly changing tone sequences
for example. This was a physical accomplishment in itself.
His minimalistic play is still part of his signature style.
The musicians from Berlin, who worked in the same genre, were either
friends, periodically played in Manuel’s ASH RA TEMPEL, or built up their
own careers.
The scene was small, but equipped with illustrious celebrities
- Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, Harald Grosskopf, Agitation Free.
And my RIAS colleague Walter Bachauer. He had called the Metamusik
Festival into life and brought the international avant-garde to Berlin.
The festival opened up new aesthetic continents to us when we were grateful to listen to chants of Tibetanian
monks or the Steve Reich Ensemble play “Drumming”.
Manuel was able to start his international career pretty quickly, focusing on England, France and Japan.
For the German middle-of-the-road-consciousness, these countries were as exotic as the winds on Jupiter,
especially Japan, where Göttsching still enjoys superstar status. Today it is not only these countries, which
consider him a cult figure. He has also made his mark as a film composer and has added his music to numerous
events and art happenings.
In November 1975 I had initiated a concert at the RIAS Studio 10, entitled “Futurum 3”, with ASH RA TEMPEL
performing. Apart from the guitars there was also an EMS Synthi A on stage. And an old Farfisa Compact Organ
that Manuel played and of which I was especially proud:
I was able to buy this instrument in 1964 after a summer job at a steel drill factory. This Farfisa was on stage
when I performed with my band the Team Beats Berlin, as support act for the Rolling Stones at their legendary
concert in September 1965 at the Berliner Waldbühne.
Somehow this instrument had survived the riot, and ten years later Manuel bought this organ from me. He had
played this Farfisa in many concerts and recordings in the following years, and it can be heard also prominently
here on “Dream and Desire”.
Originally, the two tracks “Dream” and “Desire” had been conceived for my one-hour radio feature at RIAS Berlin
in summer 1977. Then, although being broadcast only once in Berlin and Belgium, they soon became cult
amongst listeners, who taped, multiplied and distributed the tracks throughout Manuel's fan base.
But it was only in 1991, after 14 years, when Manuel decided to make it an “official” release on CD.
Something like that is unusual at times when only the new things count - until it is dismissed by the new and gets
dumped.
The revival of Dream & Desire is not nostalgia but an indication that the present will only be appreciated after
acknowledging the past. Applies also to art.
The bonus track “Despair” was not part of the original radio-feature, but was composed and recorded around the
same time in 1977, and the track fits perfectly in style and sound.
Manuel's music has been with me for now almost 50 years.
I own a superb LP and CD collection of him.
Dream & Desire is beautiful - what more can I say ...

Manu didn’t have a sequencer. Everything that sounded like a sequencer
was his highly focused guitar work. The slowly changing tone sequences
for example. This was a physical accomplishment in itself.
His minimalistic play is still part of his signature style.
The musicians from Berlin, who worked in the same genre, were either
friends, periodically played in Manuel’s ASH RA TEMPEL, or built up their
own careers.
The scene was small, but equipped with illustrious celebrities
- Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, Harald Grosskopf, Agitation Free.
And my RIAS colleague Walter Bachauer. He had called the Metamusik
Festival into life and brought the international avant-garde to Berlin.
The festival opened up new aesthetic continents to us when we were grateful to listen to chants of Tibetanian
monks or the Steve Reich Ensemble play “Drumming”.
Manuel was able to start his international career pretty quickly, focusing on England, France and Japan.
For the German middle-of-the-road-consciousness, these countries were as exotic as the winds on Jupiter,
especially Japan, where Göttsching still enjoys superstar status. Today it is not only these countries, which
consider him a cult figure. He has also made his mark as a film composer and has added his music to numerous
events and art happenings.
In November 1975 I had initiated a concert at the RIAS Studio 10, entitled “Futurum 3”, with ASH RA TEMPEL
performing. Apart from the guitars there was also an EMS Synthi A on stage. And an old Farfisa Compact Organ
that Manuel played and of which I was especially proud:
I was able to buy this instrument in 1964 after a summer job at a steel drill factory. This Farfisa was on stage
when I performed with my band the Team Beats Berlin, as support act for the Rolling Stones at their legendary
concert in September 1965 at the Berliner Waldbühne.
Somehow this instrument had survived the riot, and ten years later Manuel bought this organ from me. He had
played this Farfisa in many concerts and recordings in the following years, and it can be heard also prominently
here on “Dream and Desire”.
Originally, the two tracks “Dream” and “Desire” had been conceived for my one-hour radio feature at RIAS Berlin
in summer 1977. Then, although being broadcast only once in Berlin and Belgium, they soon became cult
amongst listeners, who taped, multiplied and distributed the tracks throughout Manuel's fan base.
But it was only in 1991, after 14 years, when Manuel decided to make it an “official” release on CD.
Something like that is unusual at times when only the new things count - until it is dismissed by the new and gets
dumped.
The revival of Dream & Desire is not nostalgia but an indication that the present will only be appreciated after
acknowledging the past. Applies also to art.
The bonus track “Despair” was not part of the original radio-feature, but was composed and recorded around the
same time in 1977, and the track fits perfectly in style and sound.
Manuel's music has been with me for now almost 50 years.
I own a superb LP and CD collection of him.
Dream & Desire is beautiful - what more can I say ...

For an aesthetic of (dis)obedience. The impressions Richard Siegal and his company Ballet of Difference gathered on a trip to Japan in September 2022 now find their way into a full-length dance evening. Siegal and his team had set off for Tokyo to learn the practice of Shuudan Koudou, also known as "Japanese Precision Walking". The strictly synchronised group choreographies are astonishing in their radical stringency and have become a secret YouTube hit, not least because of their peculiar subtle humour. Siegal recognises in the extreme disciplining of the bodies an analogy to the training practice of classical ballet. In the mutual exchange of these movement cultures, questions are raised about individual and collective thinking, about personal decision-making power and social responsibility. For this extraordinary project, Richard Siegal has invited a special guest: Nazareth Panadero, long-time companion of Pina Bausch, who has long since become an icon of Wuppertal dance theatre and will be on stage with the BoD ensemble.

On the other hand, hybrid 3 is inspired by Noh Play - Japanese performances and deals with the refusal of rules musically, hybrid three continues the two previous albums and weaves both rhythmic and beatless musical pieces into a holistic work.
The idea for me has always been that these albums are not only perceived as individual tracks, but as a whole piece, which is why I find the possibility of experiencing and listening to these albums in the right order and as a whole particularly important. For me, the pieces are not only closely related to the ballet that was created for them, but also function as individual pieces as pure, musical pieces and mark a new quality for me, which is very strongly focussed on producing electronic sounds and structures in such a way that they can develop a sculptural quality.
