Hit Parade is not, as the title suggests, a solo retrospective but rather a brand-new album produced not by regular collaborator Crooked Man, but rather another masterful maverick, DJ Koze. The pair has worked together before, so Murphy is in safe hands. Musically, it's a genre-straddling, style-bending affair whose strong songs - rich in sing-along choruses, thoughtful lyrics and musical hooks aplenty - are presented in vivid colour (with plenty of sparkling organic instrumentation). Recent singles 'Cuckoo' and 'The Universe', both instant classics, offer a neat summary of the album's many qualities.

Roisin Murphy delivers a solo sonic bomb for Crosstown Rebels. 'Jealousy' is recorded especially for Crosstown Rebels and additional to Roisin's forthcoming album. This is an unashamed slice of dance-floor hedonism from the acclaimed singer, featuring Roisin's compelling vocals in both a house and disco workout. Co-written and produced by the great-unsung modern day house hero, The Crooked Man AKA DJ Parrot, formally ofSweet Exorcist (Warp) and All Seeing I amongst many other aliases, he has been a bastion of the Sheffield sound since the late '80's. The single is also mixed by the legendary Eric Kupper, who was a production partner with Frankie Knucklesand Dave Morales and whose K-Scope releases were a staple of 90's American NY House. "Parrot understands dancing music and he understands me. This is fast and furious; he says it's roller-disco music. The backing track sounded so frantic, the lyric wasn't long coming to me, all I had to do was try to create a vocal as demented as the music!" Roisin Murphy Murphy has become one of the most competent, enduring and influential figures in the pop, disco and electronic music worlds. The Irish singer-songwriter originally broke into the charts as the front woman for Moloko, delivering music that was leftfield electronic and pop-orientated. That's Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release. The ADSR envelope is just one type of envelope, but it's a popular one that's been used in electronic music for decades. Attack is the period of time after the initial release, it's typically the loudest part of the sound Decay is the phase while you're going from the attack to the sustain – you're "decaying" Êthe volume from this sharp initial phase to the normal volume phase Sustain is the normal phase of the sound. ÊIt is typically less volume than the attack, and go on for an indefinite period of time, or for a specific amount of time Release is the draw down from the sustain period to no sound. A fade out.
