It takes time for a series of seperate ideas to evolve into a fully concepteptualized album if it wants to have a place in history for Ali and Basti Schwarz, better known as Tiefschwarz. Since 1998 the duo, as both DJ's and producers, have perfected the art of dominating the moments only experienced on a dance floor, deeply immersed in sound. Their music is unique as it is creative. Among the countless extended players and remixes, the three landmark Tiefschwarz albums: "RAL 9005", "Eat Books" and "Chocolate" all have a common thread weaving them together; a historic vision uniting the musical crossroads of past and future. As with the previous albums, Tiefschwarz pause briefly on the subjective localization of artists in the (music) world to create an album which unfolds like a story told by master story tellers. Igniting the dance floor while at the same time giving the listener the opportunity to look beyond themselves and into the journey that is "Left".
With "Left", Tiefschwarz were able to radicalize the album-specific approach and focus more intently on combining grooves with an introspective perspective. They refrained to bring in an outside co-producer for the album and made sure to forego the cliche variety of guest musicians, concentrating instead on one congenial companion: Khan, who both Ali and Basti have been close friends with since the 90's. Khan, a Frankfurt native of Turkish and Finnish decent, is one of the most prominent and exhilarating German Techno pioneers. Since the early 90's, Khan has been looking to the future with his Bizz O.D. moniker or his demimonde project Captain Comatose in the 2000's when he blew up the club world with his brand of fierce theatrics, trash and outrageous hits. He has published on Harvest, accompanied Gus Gus on tour and held residencies from Mexico to New York to Berlin. His residencies also highlight his choice of musical programming: devilish eroticism, glamour, and a "do it yourself' approach as well as combining three distinctly amusing personalities: the classic crooner, the diva, and the cabaret star. Between Tiefschwarz and Khan, the project emotes an entirely new undertone of glamour weaving beats through a Hollywood of broken dreams.
While the music industry today seems to be in a state of upheaval, certainties crumble and the album
threatens to fall the way of the dinosaur, the view of twenty years of club and musical experience see Ali, Basti and Khan taking the opportunity to seize what they see is a wake-up call to experiment. A chance to express their vision, which stands alone and unparalleled. Through a chance encounter in Mexico, Ali and Basti found that Khan was a perfect addition to the duo. As the experiment begins Khan writes, sings and instantly expresses himself as the third tastemaker while sounds meander from one machine to another and the three eat, drink and discuss how the vision will reveal itself as a tangible artifact. Before long the result is clear. Tiefschwarz have created soulful, yearning music that goes beyond the club doors and covers the whole world in a blue satin blanket. A dance written to be as sexy as it is pensive. It can be heard throughout the album as it highlights recurring historical moments in music as it comes of age. The ability to look back on times like when the Motown King, Marvin Gaye unveiled his classic "What's Going On" in the 60's or when the Black Dog's "Bytes" changed perceptions in the 90's.
Although Tiefschwarz have become masters of cryptic dance floor seduction, they are constantly paying homage to the Chicago House anthems as heard in their track "Free Falling" where happiness and horror are captured in a single line: "We transform from men to seaweed". Through Khan's words and voice, the ambivalence of Tiefschwarz's music is never more clear than before. In "Do Me", Khan takes on a clownish vocoder character with an alienated melody singing "Do you wanna dance, I'm on a crawl, I'm just behind, in aching heat, I'll be your shadow forever". Even though they are deeply rooted in club music, it's also important to always stay looking to broaden the spectrum of what would be expected from them. This moment became clear while in a session with guest musician Sven Regener from Element Of Crime. It was this moment when Tiefschwarz romantically professed to have found a soul mate. With the sound of Miles Davis' echoing trumpet coming from the lips of Sven Regener in "Morgen Abend", the three have produced an exit from an impending post-industrial gloom. Between just these two compositions from the album, there is a clear statement. Seduction and threat: the two eternal themes of "Left". And, with this, the finished album has brought Tiefschwarz to a mellow euphoria. "I could go on and on forever, in this light of bliss. I would not change a single thing. I just love it the way it is".

Khan's voice joined with a continually climbing bassline, lush percussive melodies and infectious drums result in a cut that is perfect for, and will shine, any time. Going a different direction by barely using the vocal, but staying very true to the original is Roman Flügel. Taking the original bassline and shortening the loop to 3/4 time, Flügel has devised a hypnotic tail chase that continues from beginning to end only to be accompanied by the whip of a big hi hat and wild 909 claps.
Finally, it's the Frank Wiedemann Orchestra Remix, and it's pretty safe to say that this will be one of the anthems of the year. Aptly titled, the remix is a magnum opus conducted by a master. An enormous ensemble of rich strings and delicate melodies that build and swell from start to finish.

2010 has been a very intense year for Tiefschwarz! Having released their new album Chocolate on their own label imprint Souvenir in May, they played a heavy schedule of DJ and LIVE gigs all over the world and released "More Chocolate" and "Melted Chocolate": a fine series of productions and remixes inspired by the original album release. "Melted Chocolate 3" completes the series and brings the "Chocolate year 2010" to a beautiful ending with remixes by: Reboot, Bruno Pronsato and Marcus Meinhardt. One of the secret weapons of DJs such as Sven Väth, Dubfire and Loco Dice in 2010 has been "The Whistler". To honour this very special tune, Souvenir included "The Whistler" into the digital version of "Melted Chocolate 3" with remixes by Nic Fanciulli and &Me + Rampa. The 29th EP release on their own Souvenir imprint compiled a first set of those extra gifts: one TIEFSCHWARZ REWORK version of "STONES", two remixes by Guido Schneider and SIS of "FIND ME" featuring CASSY and one remix by RUEDE HAGELSTEIN of "LEGENDS". In other words: four more opportunities to play "Chocolate" over the months to come. Tiefschwarz's "STONES REWORK" has the rhythmical obedience and intricacies of a fully automated machine. It is easy to get lost in the plethora of alternate beats that merge in and out of each other. The night sky is a shade of "Tiefschwarz" (deep black). Or at least it has been in Germany, Europe and the rest of the world since sometime around 1997 when brothers Ali and Basti Schwarz joined rhythmic forces. Their first venture was '24seven', which firmly put the then sleepy Stuttgart on the map as a top nightlife destination. The deep house duo then debuted with their pertinently titled single 'Music' in 1998 and by 2001 the pair were expanding the parameters of modern dance music with their album 'RAL9005'. Tiefschwarz quickly became a mainstay on the club scene. With the licensing of the album by Classic Recordings Tiefschwarz captured the attention of London, paving the way for their rise to international notoriety. Through high profile remixes they have also made a name for themselves as masters of reworking other people's tunes. Depeche Mode ('John The Revelator'), Madonna ('Get Together') and Spektrum ('Kinda New') are just three of the many artists who have had the Tiefschwarz treatment. So that's the background story. But the days of setting up their decks in the evening sun at the now legendary club ON-U in Stuttgart are now a distant memory for Tiefschwarz - you're now more likely to find them in their studio in Berlin. And as it gets dark and the deep black of the night sets in, Tiefschwarz come to life - clubbing being their biggest vice, yet also their biggest strength. Now they're back with their third album 'Chocolate', and a major leap forward for the duo: things are different now for Tiefschwarz, as this is the first release on their own label, Souvenir. Ali and Basti now have the world at their feet and are revelling in the artistic freedom that comes with their independence, as you can hear in their latest work; the tracks reflect their musical development over the last few years. Techno and house still form the foundations, yet Tiefschwarz push themselves beyond their previous limits. They've found a new, intrinsic sound of their own that oscillates between numerous genres - at once both clear-cut and immensely intricate. One minute the steady bass drives a dancing rhythm, the next it would have you believe that four to the floor is actually a beat based on a prime number. 'Chocolate' is everything: subtle, bitter, and sweet, without milk and sugar, it is hand crafted from only the finest ingredients. The tracks work perfectly on the dance floor, yet at the same time, the album as a whole is great to listen to outside of the club setting, due to its fantastic depth, enduring vocal tracks and subtle production methods. The first single 'Find Me' is the perfect example of striking the right balance between music to dance to and music to listen to - resident at Berlin's Panorama Bar, Cassy can be heard on this track, who has made a name for herself through working with the likes of Steve Bug and Ricardo Villalobos. Alongside Cassy, guest features include Seth Troxler, Dave Aju and a talented new singer with an incredible voice, whose identity is yet to be revealed... Ali and Basti worked with Philipp Maier, alias Santé to produce the tracks, and the new dynamic that has emerged from the collaborative production process has manifested itself in a distinct live quality. So much so that Tiefschwarz will now be performing as a live act for the first time, with Santé joining Ali and Basti to complete the live Tiefschwarz line up. Preparations for this summer's Chocolate tour are well under way, with big ideas in the pipeline. Tiefschwarz aren't just perfecting the art of creating their tracks live, but are also entering new territory with their plans for the use of visuals. Without wanting to give too much away, it's safe to say that light and shadow will play a role in creating new depths within a charged and penetrating live performance. And the focus is not on two, ahem, three men with their laptops, but rather on the music itself.

Adana Twins return to Watergate Records with a magnificent three-tracker that begs for a summer
dancefloor (but the tracks are that good, they’ll be played for a while to come).
Since their label debut in 2017 with ‘Flower of Cane’, Adana Twins have become firm favourites of the
Oberbaumbrücke crew. From handling mix duties on ‘Watergate 25’ to holding down regular gigs at the
club prior to 2020, the Hamburg duo always deliver.
‘The Curve’ is their first release on WG since 2019’s cracking remixes of Josh Wink’s ‘Higher State of
Consciousness’. The title track is a big bouncy electro cut packed with plenty of groove. A super fun
production sure to bring a smile to your face. ‘Cyrus’ belongs in a motion picture and is epic in
composition. It traverses cyborg breaks before moving into a retro key-laden riff, all the while driven by a
powerful ‘Silence / Violence’ vocal. This was made for a big festival moment. ‘Alone’ is the emotional final.
At first propelled by an ‘80s synth and airy pads before a shimmering lead takes control and pushes the

The opener ‘Altitude’ is a dreamy bass-driven heater that unfolds beautifully over an eight-minute period
and is highlighted by a key driven melody that’s both playful and emotive. ‘Astro World’ is an eclectic slice
of organic house that captivates with a string-laden break before dropping down into a rhythmic second
half. The EP’s title track is a silky sunset cut resplendent with twinkling pads that has enough groove to
seduce a dusty dancefloor. ‘Vida’ begins life as a slinky percussive jam, before the dam breaks and a

A collaborative rich EP, 8Kays links with Italian pair Glowal for the punchy ‘Matemática’, that brings plenty of eerie minor key vibes to the dancefloor thanks to the vocal contribution from Brasilian singer Abrão. ‘Falling Down’ sees 8Kays team up with the Buenos Aires-based producer and live act Juan Hansen for a captivating slice of electronic prog lit up by Hansen’s memorable vox and delicate strings. One for those special end-of-night moments.
Dutch pair Colyn & Beswerda suit up ‘Falling Down’ for a different occasion, adding a tougher backbone, while teasing out all the melodic flourishes to craft a remix that’s functional and stunning in equal doses. Man-of-the moment Chris Avantgarde then ramps up the intensity to eleven adding his own re-rub that’s everything we’ve come to love about the producer: bold, powerful and memorable. cut before a stirring folky melody rises to the fore with beautiful intent. With its unique sonic signature,
‘Samum’ will stand out in any set. Woo York show a new side of their outstanding musical talent “For this
release we wanted to push boundaries of the melodic techno sound. For Samum we have worked with a
bag pipe, one of the oldest instruments to give the track an almost „housy" note.”
The accompanier is ‘Prophet’, an emotional slice of dance music, hopeful and melancholic in equal doses,
this is custom made for big dancefloor moments.

A vital collective member and resident, JAMIIE steps up for her long-awaited debut EP on Watergate Records.
The artist has been a regular at the club stretching back to 2016, when she joined RISE, the Afro House collective that
runs monthly residencies at Watergate. Despite this, JAMIIE has always gone her own way sonically, exploring deeper
house and melodic tones, alongside the Afro influences.
A constant at Oberbaumbrücke spot during the 2020/2021, she, along with Kristin Velvet were the beating hearts of the
club, hosting the Watergate Worldwide streams every week. This year has been a standout for her playing
Tomorrowland, Exit Festival and supporting Solomun at Watergate, among many other highlights.
Following up label contributions which include ‘Suwedi’, with Niko Schwind that featured on Hyenah’s ‘Watergate 27’
compilation and the fantastic ‘Echoes’ on ‘Watergate 20’ due out November 2020, we’re treated to a generous five-track
package for her maiden EP outing on Watergate Records.
Beginning life during a summer-time sketch session in bed (her favourite spot to start new creative ideas), ‘Voices’ is an
emotive weapon, driven by a captivating synth lead, and chunky Afro-infused bottom end. "’Voices’" is mysterious and is
inspired by our thoughts, our inner voice,” JAMIIE shares. “There’s something truly mysterious and remarkable about our
inner voice, the means by which we make ourselves aware of who we are and what we think and even feel. Our inner
voice is very powerful. It can lift us up and weigh us down. It also makes decisions for us, even when sometimes we
don’t want to listen to it.”
‘Unfold Me’ is a glorious end-of-night future classic, as grandiose synths rub shoulders with beautiful bass melodies,
before a delicate key interlude gives JAMIIE the opportunity to build the energy right back up again. “This has a personal
meaning and again, has to do with the journey inwards to discovered ourselves. Like many other people I am an
extroverted introvert. I think we can be quite confusing and peculiar to others. On the one hand, social and outgoing; on
the other, very guarded, selective and hard to get to know. So, it needs time to unfold the layers to understand an
extrovert introvert person, if they should let you in,” she explains.
The originals are complemented by a trio of tight remixes chosen by JAMIIE, from three artists close to her heart:
Portuguese Afro Tech producer DJEFF delivers a blissfully silky re-work of ‘Voices’; Italian artist Malandra Jr., whose

unreleased tracks exclusive to the compilation. From Sasha to Anja Schneider, Henrik Schwarz and

Biesmans, the compilation is an exhilarating snapshot of some of the artists who have shaped Watergate’s
sound; both via the label and through laying down unforgettable sets at the club over a two-decade period.
The highlight heavy compilation charts a course throughout all the deep, dark, euphoric, tech and even
pop-laden corners of house music. Henrik Schwarz navigates a classic course via the vibey ‘You Need
Attitude’, while JOPLYN brings soaring melodies and arresting vox with ‘Lima’. Biesmans is in
characteristic sleek form with the sparkling nostalgic-soaked business of ‘Basic Bro’, before emerging stars
Mia Mendi contribute a driving electro jam ‘Astromech’.

Records and share another ace ‘Genki’, a shimmering, drama-laden piece that morphs into a tougher psyladen finish. New Watergate Agency signing DJEFF crafts an uplifting string-laden ace with ‘Cloud 7,
showing off his impressive musicianship along the way, while Hyenah make an essential contribution with

pop-laden corners of house music. Henrik Schwarz navigates a classic course via the vibey ‘You Need
Attitude’, while JOPLYN brings soaring melodies and arresting vox with ‘Lima’. Biesmans is in
characteristic sleek form with the sparkling nostalgic-soaked business of ‘Basic Bro’, before emerging stars
Mia Mendi contribute a driving electro jam ‘Astromech’.
The iconic Anja Schneider is an essential addition. The Berlin icon brings her A-Game with the big piano
chords and gospel vocals of ‘Can’t You See Me No More’ before handing the baton to Extrawelt who
comes strong with a delicious micro house serenade ‘Rover’. Sasha weaves a trademark masterful beast

Records and share another ace ‘Genki’, a shimmering, drama-laden piece that morphs into a tougher psyladen finish. New Watergate Agency signing DJEFF crafts an uplifting string-laden ace with ‘Cloud 7,
showing off his impressive musicianship along the way, while Hyenah make an essential contribution with
the funky key-driven houser ‘Going in Circles’. Club resident JAMIIE shares the wicked ‘Echoes’, which is

Biesmans will mix the next volume of Watergate’s prestigious mix series, following in the
footsteps of Ellen Allien, Solomun, Jimi Jules and WhoMadeWho. Going above and beyond
the standard mix compilation brief, the Belgian artist has produced a work consisting
entirely of his own original productions. The project also features collaborations with a
diverse range of artists including Dusky, Mathew Jonson, Adana Twins and Kasper Bjørke,
alongside rising talent such as Shubostar and Mala Ika.
We got our most significant taste of what a special and unique artist Biesmans is last year, with
the release of ‘Trains, Planes & Automobiles’, his superb debut LP. This wasn’t any ordinary album
project, however. Rather, he set himself the task of completing three tracks per week, pairing theaudio with vintage ‘80s film and video clips, sharing the creations to his Instagram followers as he
went along.
Since this point, he’s gone on to develop a live PA, tour it to places including Exit Festival and
Fusion Festival and become a pivotal artist on the W-Agency roster, after already being a solid
member of the club’s crew having worked there as a technician for around 8 years.
His next impressive career stride is ‘Watergate 28’, a joyful neon dancefloor trip that takes in
synthwave, indie dance, nu disco and all manner of celestial tracks in the house spectrum. It’s
also the first Watergate compilation since dOP’s in 2012 to take on the mammoth challenge of
producing all original and exclusive material for the project. An unofficial album per se, with the
thrilling arc of soundtracking a hiplashing on Watergate’s iconic Main Floor.
The scene was set in Mexico in February 2022. The call came through from Watergate HQ and the
deadline was tight: deliver a volume of the club’s esteemed mix series within a three-month
window, the brief stipulating that the mix should have four originals and two collaborations.
Biesmans went sober for a three-month period so he could give everything he had to the project,
swapping the lunchtime beers for sport sessions. When he arrived back in Berlin in mid-February
ready to begin studio time, he was in the zone and immediately begun work completing a sketch
on ‘Smooth Monday’, the track that would go onto to be his luminescent collaboration with the
Permanent Vacation-backed Zombies In Miami. Two weeks into his studio time, it was clear there
was more than enough quality material to not only fulfill, but smash Watergate’s original brief.
What followed was no less than 17 original tracks and 13 collaborations – arguably the most
ambitious in Watergate’s compilation history.
Already in touch after releasing on their imprint 17 Steps in 2019, he sent three sketches to Dusky
and the nostalgia-soaked ‘Back in the Daze’ was the shimmering result. The vibes flowed like a
dream when he linked with Kid Simius for the funky nu disco gem ‘Me Gusta Acid’, even
recording Kid’s vocals in one-take. A visit to his hero Mathew Jonson’s studio for the day saw the
birth of the pumping piano-laden houser ‘Quantum Computing’, a project highlight. After bonding
over their shared love of cosmic synths in Tulum this year, Biesmans invited South Korean artist
Shubostar into his studio to create the wavy ‘80s inspired creation ‘Across the Universe’.
Biesmans likewise mined inspiration wherever he went, his track ‘March for Peace’ was created
off the back of attending a rally to support Ukraine.
Biesmans pieced together each track like a jigsaw puzzle, building up sonic moods throughout.
“Sometimes I would do three tracks in one day, or set specific moods. For example, if someone
sent me some powerful chords, then I decided to do an intro track with that. Then I started to put
some artists together like a puzzle, connecting the artist with the position in the mix.”
The resulting mix is an exhilarating technicolour journey. From the immense opener ‘Away’ with
one half of dOP’s Vandesande, to the woozy arpeggiated bliss of ‘Holiday’ with Kasper Bjørke and
the synth-drenched breakbeat euphoria of the Biesmans solo cut ‘All Day Every Day’, it’s a
highlight-heavy 78-minute ride.
“Even though this is (sort of) another album, the concept is definitely different. I've approached
this project as a DJ mix. When I record a podcast or mixtape, I like to take the listener on a
journey. Starting of beatless and moving slowly into the party/dancing mood. I also felt that I had
to step away from the album sound of last year. I don't want to keep on repeating myself, but I still
have a love for synth sounds so it was important to explore new territory with these elements. The
collaboration part made it also a super interesting project in which you already get inspired by
whoever you work with. I also think that speed played a big role in this project, the whole thing

Rising UK duo Mia Mendi returns for their second outing on Watergate Records with the retro-tinged
Robosynapse EP.
The label debut of Mia Mendi was a notable 2021 highlight for the Oberbaumbrücke imprint. Titled 'Ubi’, the
EP was a collaboration with Thomas Gandey and demonstrated their full-bodied dancefloor approach,
injecting their unique sound signature into a modern progressive house palette.
‘Robosynapse’ is no less exciting (or fun). The title track is a plump nu wave houser, driven by soaring retro
synths, a gutsy electro bassline and an 80s guitar solo. ‘Simulated Reality’ buzzes and hums, seven minutes
of emotional electro and crispy drumlines, before handing the baton to ‘Cyborg String’, which continues the
dreamy throwdown.
Alan Dixon makes his first contribution to Watergate Records and re-fashions ‘Robosynapse’ into a glistening
cosmic-tinged beast, amplifying the focus on the guitar lead. Fresh off her label debut with the excellent
‘Mind Control’ EP, Henri Bergmann makes a welcome return to re-work ‘Simulated Reality’ into a powerful
melodic gem, heightening the focus on the synths. An added bonus to the pack, Musumeci delivers a
supreme chugging re-work of ‘Ubi’. Game on!

Rising UK duo Mia Mendi returns for their second outing on Watergate Records with the retro-tinged
Robosynapse EP.
The label debut of Mia Mendi was a notable 2021 highlight for the Oberbaumbrücke imprint. Titled 'Ubi’, the
EP was a collaboration with Thomas Gandey and demonstrated their full-bodied dancefloor approach,
injecting their unique sound signature into a modern progressive house palette.
‘Robosynapse’ is no less exciting (or fun). The title track is a plump nu wave houser, driven by soaring retro
synths, a gutsy electro bassline and an 80s guitar solo. ‘Simulated Reality’ buzzes and hums, seven minutes
of emotional electro and crispy drumlines, before handing the baton to ‘Cyborg String’, which continues the
dreamy throwdown.
Alan Dixon makes his first contribution to Watergate Records and re-fashions ‘Robosynapse’ into a glistening
cosmic-tinged beast, amplifying the focus on the guitar lead. Fresh off her label debut with the excellent
‘Mind Control’ EP, Henri Bergmann makes a welcome return to re-work ‘Simulated Reality’ into a powerful
melodic gem, heightening the focus on the synths. An added bonus to the pack, Musumeci delivers a
supreme chugging re-work of ‘Ubi’. Game on!

Blazing newcomer Henri Bergmann makes her full EP debut on Watergate Records with the captivating ‘Mind Control’ EP.
Building a buzz via impressive releases on her label Automatik, the Londoner has picked up support from
everyone from Dixon, Solomun and Maceo Plex. Indeed, mention the Dodi Palese Remix remix of her track
‘Protection’ to any clued-up melodic house fan and you’re likely to be met with a blissed-out response, so
beloved was the cut, which also ended up in Tale of Clubs’ top 10 for 2021.
Her maiden voyage on the Oberbaumbrücke home label is a tour de force of chugging house that
encompasses new wave, electro and progressive elements, with a strong cast of collaborators and remixes
along the way.
Pushing herself creatively during the lockdown, this EP is the first time we’ve heard Henri utilise her voice on
her own productions, and the resulting work is a treat. The title track is a team-up with Biesmans who brings
his distinct retro sound signature to the track, while Henri’s vox elevates it to another level. ‘Our Time Has
Come’ is a punchy dancefloor gem propelled by her own vocals and a classy psychedelic synth line. ‘We
Just Keep On Going’ brings bags of robotic soul to the table, as Henri’s husband Wennink takes to the
vocoder, alongside a mystical lead melody. Stephan Jolk returns to the label following his excellent
‘Freedom’ EP in April, re-working ‘Mind Control’ into a muscular weapon. Meanwhile Echonomist, who is
notable for his appearance on WhoMadeWho’s Watergate 26 compilation, also takes his hand to the title
track, re-fashioning it into a tough bass-driven electro cut that’s beautiful and brain-scrambling in equal
doses.
