The hip house boom was in full effect, thanks to Tyree Cooper's efforts, and Trax responded with this double-header. 'Power Move' is straight up hip hop, but it's the flip, producer by Trax regular Lidell Townsell, 'I'll Make You Dance' that does the business here. Kool Rock Steady, also known as Edward Rudolph, had serious credentials for an MC, being cousin of one Africa Bambaataa. This release is also notable for yet another misspelling of Lidell Townsell's Christian name (Lydell, since you ask).

Originally a member of the California R&B group Club Nouveau, this was Irving's crowning glory as a member on the Chi-town house faternity. The song was written by Dwayne 'Willie Wonka' Grant and remixed by Frankie Knuckles and is quite unlike most of the vocals that came out of the house scene, with a beautiful clarity to his voice.

The first release on Trax naturally came from the Jesse Saunders stable. It was an agreement between pressing plant owner Sheerman and Saunders and Vince Lawrence that led to the formation of the label. Early pressings even had a Jes Say catalogue number etched in them, through subsequent editions bear the Trax cat. no. "Wanna Dance", unusually for Trax is not really house at all, bearing far more similarities with the experimental productions of On-U-Sound and the Doug Wimbish/Skip McDonald crew. Says Vince "This is built around the fact that we found out that could call the Linn drum people and order a chip and that said somethin' - we got our first sampler. When we learned that you could say shit and play it like an instrument that was a big deal then." Chaotic, acidic jack tracks are the order of the day here, Dancer aka Sidney Winters, dropped this obscure bomb on Trax in the peak year of 1987. Both sides are mixed by the late, great Frankie Knuckles and have all the trademarks of his touch; tough drum machines, Italo inspired melodies and thundering bass-lines. These monster tracks sound absolutely massive and will surely do damage when dropped today. "Am A Dog" is the A-side and is the more melodic of the two cuts, featuring triggered dog-like vocal stabs, epic, soaring synths and a repeated voice floating in and out of the mix, while on the B-side the descriptively titled "Boom Boom" does exactly that, a descending, aggressive acid line drives the track with some reverbed-out drums and a disjointed female voice repeating "Boom boom goes my heart", deep, dark and heavy! Both tracks have been re-mastered and re-pressed for the very first time since their original release in 1987 in conjunction with Trax Records, and have been made available again with original label artwork. Caribbean-Belgian composer, producer and musician Nala Sinephro announces her debut album Space 1.8 with lead track “Space 3”. Space 1.8 will be released on 3rd September via Warp Records.

The instrumental “Space 3” is a short clip from a 3 hour improvised session with drummer Eddie Hick (Sons of Kemet) and producer/multi-instrumentalist Dwayne Kilvington on synths bass (Wonky Logic, Steam Down) culminating in a synth driven, particle-splitting, rapture. Speaking about the track, Sinephro explains: “We recorded it in the start of spring, it was a magical day. The day after recording I collaged the drums, added fifteen synths, produced and mixed it at home and it was all done.”

Sinephro’s music fuses meditative sounds, jazz sensibilities, folk and field recordings. Her musical practice is rooted in the study of frequency and geometry and guided by the premise that sound moves matter. Her debut album Space 1.8 takes shape as a metaphysical structure, where each curative space is a womb-like cocoon created by Sinephro in service of relief and affirmative, ecstatic freedom. Space 1.8 was composed, produced, performed, engineered, recorded, mixed by Sinephro at age 22. On the album, she plays modular synths and pedal harp alongside her friends James Mollison, Shirley Tetteh, Nubya Garcia, Eddie Hick, Dwayne Kilvington, Jake Long, Lyle Barton, Rudi Creswick and more.

Following electrifying live performances across the London scene, word of Nala Sinephro’s playing quickly spread throughout the UK jazz scene, consequently landing her performances as part of the celebrated jazz night Steam Down, alongside playing with and supporting the likes of Demae, Eun, Coby Sey, Rosie Turton, Robert Ames, London Contemporary Orchestra, Touching Bass, Spitfire Audio, Nadeem Din-Gabisi. She was touted as one of The Guardian’s artists to watch in 2020, has garnered support from the likes of Gilles Peterson; and is a resident DJ on NTS sharing monthly selections of celestial sounds. In 2021, she joined the innovative Warp Records roster where she continues to weave her unique sound world.

Thankfully, Richard D. James has decided to finally release at least some of the output that he's been banging on about since mid-2000s. What we do know is that AFX is reborn after the string of acid 12"s released about 10 years ago on Rephlex, that saw the alias become one of the most popular of James' alter egos. Orphaned Deejay Selek is a collection of tunes that contain all of the Twin's magic and unpredictably, but that also cut straight to the point and head to the middle of the dance floor.
