As always, the return of Ruede Hagelstein is inevitable and with each return he ups the ante tenfold showcasing his ever growing prowess behind the studio door. It seems as if, with each Ruede EP, the amount of elements utilized shrinks while at the same time the sound grows in power and dominance and that could not be better exemplified than here.

Consisting of two originals and a remix from the one and only Martin Buttrich, the EP is a gross display of well thought out, mature dance floor jewels. Opening the short player is Hagelstein's 'Dematerialize feat. Justin Evans' where a sinister yet soothing vocal sets the tone for the entire track, laying the groundwork for a gorgeous bass drum and shimmers of distant percussion carry us into celestial spaces. 'Forward Vision' is up next and follows suit by relying on a brooding minimal groove to drive the shimmers of glistening atmospherics and sparkling sonics optimal for dizzy and delirious club moments.

Up first is The Drifter and he turns out what may be his best remix to date with a swelling, emotional ride that will most definitely be an anthem for the coming summer. Taking a different approach, yet just as engaging, Ruede reworks his original into a dark, looping psychedelic odyssey perfect for late nights or early mornings. Can Love Be Synth rounds out the remixes with a gorgeous Pop-esque twist on the original choosing to focus on live instrumentation and retro synthesis resulting in a cross-over favorite. And finally, for all the times you want the vibe without the vocal, a dub version of the original gem.

Not only is Ruede one of the longest running residents at the club, but he's also the man behind some of the label's most acclaimed music and the curator responsible for lucky number 13 in the illustrious Watergate mix series. With this, it seemed obvious to put Ruede up to his next task: an album. It is with great anticipation and excitement that we bring you the first LP for both Ruede and Watergate Records, Apophenia. Apophenia is the experience of seeing patterns or connections in random or meaningless data, and for Ruede, this is the perfect interpretation to describe his writing process, in which ideas appear from the empty, chaotic darkness. A random chord progression or percussion arrangement opens the door to the imagination where structures appear and begin to take shape. Unlike most of his previous work, Apophenia is not strictly attached to the dance floor, but created to fit just as seamless while listening at home as it is in the club. For over a year, Ruede collected ideas and visualized his plan. It was important not to mimic his earlier work, but to focus on a certain sound. While staying minimalistic yet extremely organic and melodic he has created a timeless long player. While the LP spans a range of emotions, it is always grounded in Ruede's unparalleled, singular sound. Pair that with some notable features from artists like PillowTalk, Hollis P. Monroe & Overnite, Justin Evans and C.A.R. and you have a plethora of dazzling music. With tracks like "Moon Rabbit", "Life Is A Beach" and "Found A Place" Ruede displays the sound of a night at the club while "Already Undone feat. With the build up to the highly anticipated debut album for both Ruede Hagelstein and Watergate Records nearing it's release date, we have put together an advanced release of the original Ruede track 'Soul Dynamic' including some stunning remixes to get you ready. With the original, Ruede does what he does best and administers a big melodic club hit ripe with canorous shimmers and a warm rolling sub bass bolstered by crisp percussion grooves and a vocal persistently muttering 'Soul Dynamic'. This alone should be enough, but we didn't stop there. Up first on remix duties, and without any introduction is the legendary Kenny Larkin. Coming off his massive remix of La Fleur on Watergate last year, he takes the same approach and lays out a long,
tracky version of the original, building tension over the twelve minutes with ghostly rhodes riffs and eerie strings. Possibly the heaviest of the all the remixes is from Fur Coat as they provide us with a dark, strobe light infused adaptation packed with huge bass stabs and spectral tones. Finally, we have another whose name needs no introduction, Douglas Greed. With his version of 'Soul Dynamic' he takes the most playful approach of the three remixes by creating a hypnotic, looping lead laid over earthy percussive lines and a sweltering wash of keys. No matter what you're looking for, one of these will do the trick. It's not so much which one to play, but which one to play first.

The slat blinds in Berlin's Panorama Bar are part of the VJ's equipment, and when the mood is right (usually around Sunday afternoon), he opens them up to allow slices of sunshine to penetrate the smoky club air. It doesn't happen all too often, remaining something special amongst hours of darkness. But as Ruede played the first version of "Shades" in his last P-Bar set, it seemed to happen just for him, as if he had written this track's distinct break especially for this moment: everyone was mesmerized. Re.You & Rampa with a RMX for "Shades" are also no strangers to such euphoria, and as Ruede recently lent them his voice, they return the favor by building a robust, custom-made bass mobile for the A2. Then, on the B-side, Ruede's fellow band members from The Noblettes make an appearance. As with "Shades", the focal point is also the big break, only this one has nothing to do with techno - it's more of an indie-house ballad with dance ambition. More

Who am I ? That's what Ruede Hagelstein asks himself when he looks at the reflection in the mirror every morning when he gets up. Then the image goes into the studio and produces tracks for Upon You for him. The first one sings " give a little slap to your soul" darkly and romanticly at a relaxed 120 bpm into the mike and has taken up lodgings on A1 of our UY 047. The second plays piano, even if just paraphrased. The B1 beat requires a slightly faster dancer that A1. Well 20 catalogue numbers and three "The Cheapers" releases later, our Ruede Hagelstein dares to perform a solo dance on Upon You. In this case- a chair dance. The name "Reise nach Jerusalem" stands for the game moving chairs that Ruede still remembers from his east German child hood.The principles of the track will be recognized by those who know the game. To all others the A1 side will appear to be a mean techno pusher. "Aron Habrit" also surprises the inclined listener with unexpected curves of tension but still remains on the house ground of reality and digs like "Levithan" towards the thick underbrush of pre-christian mythology that Ruede seemed to in any way have heard of in one of those Brandenburg Kibbuzes. It's a turbulent time for underground dance music. While many DJs and labels obsess over repeating an old skool house sound, Souvenir #9 replies with a provocative glimpse of the future. Ruede Hagelstein has been making a name for himself as Berliner to watch out for since his first EP in 2004. Since then he's been attracting praise from DJs like Claude Von Stroke and Laurent Garnier and catching the ears of Souvenir bosses Ali and Basti from Tiefschwarz with records like his acclaimed Ghostdriver EP in 2007. 'The Modest Theme' is slice of epic and chilling tech house. Its opening track, builds shimmering string instruments around a sonic jungle of machine noise. From this soup of futuristic rhythms a colossal horn hook beams out from the track like a lighthouse in the distance on a black as hell, gale whipped night. House or techno rarely comes as dramatic as this and its accompanying tracks add fuel to these insistent, urgent themes. Ruede's remix of Dillon's 'C Unseen Sea' gathers ghostly surging wind noises and the eerie effects-soaked sounds of a child together with foreboding percussion. Perfect for orchestrating that point in a night when the music locks a crowd into a tense, dramatic groove, it's carried along at the midway of the track by an off kilter synth that bounces in and out of key taking the sanity of any discerning dancefloor with it. The final track 'It's On' picks up the pace of the EP for a bustling finale. A 303 style bassline opens and filters closed throughout the track raising the tension and releasing the pressure while unsettling synths and reverb soaked percussion continue the mysterious, surreal vibe of the EP. The future it seems has never looked so Ruede.

For the next release on Souvenir, the label dips into the past of almost 30 years ago to retrieve this forgotten souvenir of the times, dusting off and rejuvenating Section 25's classic, 'Desert', taken from the album, 'From the Hip' on Manchester's infamous Factory Records. This reappropriation of the 1984 track is the perfect choice for two very seasoned producers whose own musical history dates back to those days: Mahk (Mahk Rumbae) and DJ Morpheus (Samy Birnbach). As a vocalist, A&R, label manager, DJ, producer, musician and more, DJ Morpheus has been involved in music from the late 80s. He formed part of cult act Minimal Compact during the mid-80s then went onto producing as the Gruesome Twosome (releasing their biggest hit 'Hallucination Generation' in 1989), and then later, in 1994, worked as A&R for SSR/ Crammed Discs, taking the helm of their much loved Freezone Compilations, exposing the world to artists as varied and cutting edge as DJ Cam, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Photek, Abacus, T-Power, The Mighty Bop aka Bob Sinclar, Howie B, Coldcut, Carl Craig, Basement Jaxx, 4 Hero, Josh Wink, Plaid, Alex Gopher and more. Working in electronic music since the late 1980s too, Mahk has spent much of his time working in the experimental field, both as part of long running industrial/ experimental band Konstruktivists as well as on a number of solo projects. He also produced dance and techno in the early 90s, then in the late 90s in the UK drum and bass scene, releasing tracks on Mickey Finn and Aphrodite's label Urban Takeover. Mahk continues to work on new music, recently returning to the techno scene with his new dark techno project Codex Empire.
The A-side sees the pair reinterpret the much loved Factory Records track, twisting it into a slow driving, bloody curdling, arpeggiated late night anthem for the freaks. Complimenting this reworking is a remix from prolific French electronic producer, Danton Eeprom who injects a little more funk with a chopped and slapped bass with piqued guitar hooks, all cloaked in dubbed out reverb ambience. For the B-side, industrial and analogue noodlers Juju & Jordash turn in what can only be described as a tripped out journey through the stems of the original which perfectly rounds out this fascinating update of a once loved classic.

French producer David K is ready to announce his debut album, 'Out of Range,' an off-the-radar mixture of romantic melodies on drugs, rocking beats à la parisienne, and sounds to turn you on, released on Tiefschwarz's ever reliable imprint, Souvenir.
David K represents something that's all too rare in electronic music today: an artist who makes music first and club music second. For him, emotion is paramount, melody is important, the pop format has its perks and original material is always better than a sample. Late at night and early in the morning, he can be found tapping away on his keyboards and throwing together arrangements on the fly (a pianist by training, he can't bear to make music slouched over a mouse). His only goal is to make something that will keep himself dancing.
His roots are in Paris, where he lived his entire life until 2011. He started DJing in the late 80s on a makeshift set of gear, complete with a radio and tape deck, but once he hit his first rave in '91 he went straight for the Technics 1200s. He was making a living as a teacher and graphic designer, but like some invisible cosmic force, the life of the full-time artist kept drawing him in. Always involved in creating, composing, and mixing, he began his production career with the Boogabaloo EP on Sismic in 2002, a small Parisian house label. Not long after that he fell in with some key figures in the Paris' underground club scene, such as Dan Ghenacia, who brought him into the Freak n' Chic stable. "This album has been 10 years in the making. Well, almost." he points out. "I started to hold on to some of the tracks I was writing over the past decade or so. I suppose you could say that this album is a bit like a bedside-table book which transcends all of my influences, my musical history, and my idea of modern music." David has always worked conscientiously with the dance-floor in mind, though his sound has always dipped into the outer reaches of myriad genres; rock, funk and unashamedly straight-up pop, a confluence which draws on his honest inspirations. The range of influence can be heard right through the album Beyond drawing upon mere historical influence, he has also brought on board close friends including guest appearances which only help add to the album's rich makeup: dOP frontman Jaw appears on "How Beautiful You Are," frequent collaborator Opium (of La Boetie and Nouvelle Vague) sings on "Intro," whilst old friend and Italian producer, Francesco Farfa, shares writing credits on recent single, "Come Up From the Darkness," David's own voice comes through on on "Show Me The Deal." Like all of his records, the entire package is glazed in the quirky eccentricity, nonchalant percussion and irresistible hunk of sleazy and funk-fueled boogie that we've come to expect of his productions over the years.
In a world of increasingly short attention spans, 142-character, self-styled status updates, ubiquitous smartphones and Big Brother-esque governmental spying, David K shows that sometimes it's good to just take yourself 'Out of Range' for a while.

David K represents something that's all too rare in electronic music today: an artist who makes music first and club music second. For him, emotion is paramount, melody is important, the pop format has its perks and original material is always better than a sample. Late at night and early in the morning he dances alone in his studio, tapping away on his keyboards and throwing together arrangements on the fly (a pianist by training, he can't bear to make music slouched over a mouse). His only goal is to make something that will keep himself dancing. David K's roots are in Paris, where he lived his entire life until 2011. He started DJing in the late 80s on a makeshift set of gear, complete with a radio and tape deck, but once he hit his first rave in '91 he went straight for the Technics 1200s. He was making a living as a teacher and graphic designer, but like some invisible cosmic force, the life of the full-time artist kept drawing him in. His first record came out in 2002 on Sismic Music, a small Parisian house label, and not long after that he fell in with some key figures in the Paris' underground club scene, such as Dan Ghenacia, who brought him into the Freak n' Chic stable, and Phil Weeks, who put out one of his earliest 12-inches, Yo Chicago, on Robsoul Recordings. Cocoon, Guy Gerber's Supplement Facts, Tsuba Records, Visionquest, and, more recently, Tiefschwarz's carefully curated Sounvenir and sub-label NAU. His new single, alongside Italian-born house and techno producer Francesco Farfa for Souvenir sees the pair draw upon their unique, shared skillsets. Initially Farfa contacted David to enlist him for remix duties on one of his tracks. After listening to the remix, Farfa asked him to refurbish the original together. 'Come up from the darkness' marks another stellar collaboration between the pair. The release pulls together three quirky and eccentric dance-floor ready cuts, complete with a vocal tool for DJs. Live percussion, nonchalant bass bumps and pitched down vocals come together in unison to create an irresistible slice of sleazy, funk-fueled boogie that brings light to anyone who listens. Coming just a short time after the release of his collated singles collection, Retrospective, the first track on this new 12" from Chris Wood & Meat comes courtesy of deep house don, Mr. G. His remix provides a sparse take on the original 'Cock Robin,' jacking straight ahead into a hard-hitting house rhythm, complete with finger-clicks and vocal stabs. A definite dance-floor roller. On the flip, the duo have provided a brand new cut, 'Tony's Pipe,' which rattles with drilling percussion and soaks itself in a modulating, acid-tinged synth line, all built around emerging, muffled vocal samples.

Marco Freivogel's first solo release provides a fresh direction for this seasoned producer. Marco will already be known to those in the techno world for his live project Exercise One, with his partner of 10 years Ingo Gansera. As the full time producer of Exercise One, Marco has released records on Mobilee, Wagon Repair, Cocoon and their own Exone & Lan Muzic labels, as well as remixing everyone from Shackleton and Peter Van Hosen to Sian and Dapayk & Padberg. But in the last few years Marco has been producing behind the scenes on a number of new projects for artists including Tiefschwarz, Dave Vega, Mama and Elif Bicer, and collaborating with friends on new music, such as last years stunning EP as Exercise One vs Mathew Jonson 'Lost Forever In Happy Crowd'. This 12" for Souvenir in 2013 will be the first solo release, but marco also has plans later in the year to introduce his new live solo techno project that's inspired by his early musical days playing in industrial bands. The original '11am (before)' is a winding house track, featuring the vocal talents of Elif Bicer, who's previously known for her work with Ben Klock, Prosumer and Steffi. For '11am (after)' Marco strips back the melodies and toughens things up. The remix comes courtesy of Canadian friends The Mole & Hreno, who deliver a characteristic bouncing rework to get the dance floors pulsing. More

Hot on the heels of release 050 from Tiefschwarz with Argenis Brito on vocal duty, comes a neat remix package with contributions from David K, Strangers in Heaven and Re-UP.
French producer David K has released on all the major Parisian labels, Freak n' Chic, Rue De Plaisance, Jetaime amongst others. Here he serves up a double dose, his 'Allegro' rework anything but, the vocals twisted out of recognition into a muttering chorus of demonic gremlins, while the mutant drums steadily beat out an ominous tone. A distant marimba and the odd piano chord that's left hanging, a quizzical non sequitur, lift the melody. On the flip, David's 'Grand Piano' pairs a shuffling, almost jazzy beat with a shower of tinkling pianos, the vocals washed with melancholy from the keystrokes that slowly morph into plucked strings.
Souvenir's very own mysterious twosome, Strangers in Heaven, beef up the kick and make the bassline snake and swirl, turning up the groove factor. The vocals provide respite from the tension, while skittering synth sounds come up close against the hypnotic beat. Upon You stalwarts Re-UP take it deep, a throbbing bassline playing off the tightest of snare hits, a squelching synth hitting suddenly and a distended voice appearing too out of nowhere. It's a total transformation, none of the original parts distinguishable, as if seen through a prism of the unsettling.

We're still recovering from our big FIVE OH milestone, but the music never stops and this time we have something new from Souvenir wunderkind Re.You.
It's been a pretty wild year for Marius Maier AKA Re.You, his live with Rampa debuting at Fabric at our label take over, plus dropping a massive 12" on Gigolo, plus solo releases on Avotre, Mobilee and of course his home away from home, Souvenir. This time round he brings the funk on 'Insanity' with a trademark, treated vocal serving from LIA. The track brings it real close, close enough for breath to from little droplets of condensation against a cold window. A niggling percussive interplay sends the track reeling all over the dancefloor, various creaks and whistles playing off each other until a solid bassline swoops in meaning business. What's known in the industry as a straight weapon! 'Lonely' follows with a more frantic tempo, a small drum pattern loops, throwing you with its slightly skewed beat. Some techy snares build the tension while some off key chords supply the haunted melody. On the flip Re.You brings it down a notch, going straight deep house. Again, his masterful use of ethereal vocal samples build both mood and drive the beat. An unintelligible phrase phasing out of sync until what seems like a percussive denouement, the bassline returning with gusto for a serious second round. 'Closer' gets a much more upbeat rework from Southern French producers Amine Edge & DANCE. They keep the vocal sample as a skeleton, but build up the track in much bubblier fashion, a playful synth line earworms while a chunky, dancefloor-friendly bassline punctuates the whole thing.
