Last year’s ‘The Age Of Compassion’ by Chicago underground house don Tevo Howard was one of the standout tracks for Buzzin’ Fly in 2011with widespread DJ and media support. It joined his burgeoning body of work on other acclaimed labels such as Rush Hour and his own Beautiful Granville. Now Tevo returns with his follow-up for Buzzin’ Fly. If ‘The Age Of Compassion’ was a simple and elegant dancefloor bump wrapped in warm analogue melancholia, then the ‘Monument EP’ is its nemesis - a stark future-retro reinterpretation of the origins of house music build from the bare components of machines: raw drums, sub bass, sine waves, square waves and oscillators. And yet there is still a burnished beauty to this EP. All three tracks seems to find echoes of each other in their arrangements and brittle harmony. Machine music for the modern age edged with passion and feeling, and another fresh step for its producer.

For Tevo Howard's first CD release we've married his two EP releases for HHYR: Crystal Republic from 2010 and the brand new Pandora's Box. Next to that two more tracks are added, 'Move' from 2009 as well as 'I Won't Lay Back', from Rick Poppa Howard's s/t EP of the same year. This makes up for a comprehensive compilation showing some of the best output from his recent catalogue. Though his tracks are heavily inspired on the early days, his productions sound very crisp and ‘today’. The 'Crystal Republic' tracks show his emotional and raw warehouse side, whereas on the 'Pandora's Box' tracks Tevo experiments with different rhythms and textures, which results in a varied set of tracks, from classic Chicago acid house to more Italo leanings. The A-side features two mixes of “Moda”; the “High Fashion pop mix” is the kind of masterful key-drenched vintage house we’ve come to expect from the producer, while the “Underground Fashion house mix” opts for a more raw approach. The flip sees a turn into deep and hypnotic 2am techno territory, featuring “Obsessions (Plastic mix)” with its twisting, pulsing bass and syncopated beats, and “Relationship” with its stacked analogue arpeggios and defined 4/4 pulse. Lionel Melgar and Tevo Howard first met via independent circles of friends in 1988. They began a friendship anchored by their passion for skateboarding and DJing. Recalling the first encounter at Lionel's childhood home, the turntables and music (new wave and Chicago house) were an absolute mutual attraction. Growing up in Chicago during the 80's helped form Ruby's palette, rich with electronic influences of disco, italo, house, post-punk, and industrial. They made many DJ appearances in Chicago's underground. In 1992, the two retired from the turntables turning to instrumentalism and incorporated another cohort, Gustavo Guerra, who played guitar in the Chicago alt-rock scene and finally connected with Lionel and Tevo through music projects that started and ended in the living room of Lionel's apartment. Ruby's debuts were limited to freshly cooked CD's and car stereos until now. Ruby is a collaboration of friendships sharing a musical bond and electronic soundscape interfaced through Lionel Melgar's electronic wizardry and seamless production, Tevo Howard's House expertise and analog hardware, and Gustavo Guerra's instrumentals.
