Larry de Kat joins Alexis Raphael’s recently launched Paella Hair Sex imprint with his debut EP on the label entitled ‘Radio K-Nip 4.20 FM’. Utrecht-based DJ and producer Larry de Kat is a rising talent with releases on Slapfunk Records, Lazare Hoche, Ruff and his own Katnip imprint. The artist has built a diverse underground following with his eclectic but distinctive sound gaining support from the likes of Bicep, Mark Farina, Ben UFO and Subb-An. 'Radio K-Nip 4.20FM' explores Jazz, Hip-Hop, House and Funk, adding another impressive release to his growing catalogue. Alexis has established himself as a critical figure within the house scene since rising through the ranks in 2011. His illustrious career has seen his material land on prestigious labels like Hot Creations, Mad Tech, Moda Black, Get Physical and Nervous, whilst remixing Disciples, Kim English, Tiger Stripes and Miguel Campbell. The recently launched Paella Hair Sex imprint is the beginning of a new chapter in the long-standing Deep House artist’s musical story. A return to vinyl in 2016 sparked the inspiration behind the vinyl-only label, now welcoming a heavyweight release from Larry de Kat this coming March.
Brief ‘cut and paste’ opener 'Tune In Turn On' features immersive drum loops, spoken word vocals and a classic flute sample, laying the way for the rest of the package. The sensational ‘J’ provides a feel-good Deep House affair, as a slick bassline sequence fuses with rising synth lines and soulful vocals to guide listeners on a hypnotic journey. The charming vibe continues on interludes - ‘The Spoiler’, ‘LoPass’ and ‘Zoned Out’ which showcase another side to the artists’ unique style, providing three stripped-back modern jazz affairs. On the flip, Larry de Kat’s rework of Vanity 6’s ‘Nxsty Girl’ combines funk-infused melodies with taut bass guitar-riffs and loose percussion arrangements to keep the energy flowing. ‘Criminally Understated’ is a harmonic slice of old skool gospel and soul - sensual chords, soft keys and fluttering modulations rise through the cosmos, whilst the B-side interludes 'Lonnies Tune', 'Interloot' and Tribulations round out proceedings in style. Continuing to push that deep, raw house sound Chris Carrier’s Adult Only label presents a brand new EP from Slapfunk affiliate and all round funkateer, Larry De Kat. Larry keeps the grooves rolling in his native Holland, where he has close ties with the much respected Slapfunk Records, along with good friend Anil Aras. His back catalogue includes another French connection, with the young masters at Lazare Hoche Records. This time he links up with prolific producer Chris Carrier to give Adult Only a taste of his funky medicine. On side A we have ‘Diks On Gruds’, a gruff dance floor banger with a deadly bassline and ultra crisp hats, which inject a solid energy from start to finish. On the flip another French hero, Phil Weeks, add his stomping Chicago flavour into the mix reworking the track with panache. A2 is ‘Noodlez’, a quirky joint composed of odd sounds wriggling and whirring above a slinky bassline counterposed with choppy percussion. Finally, the EP closes out with ‘Um?’, a sombre affair which pumps and purrs with minimal composition – subtle effects in the arrangement bounce around the beats, while a mysterious voice creeps in and out of the background. At the tail end of the '90s, Gregory Darsa played around with a number of pseudonyms before finally settling on his now familiar DJ Gregory alias. One of those abandoned aliases was Headcore. It was used for a single EP back in 1998, released on Chateau Flight's label, Versatile (then in it's' infancy). Here, that EP gets a welcome reissue. It's aged rather well, with all four tracks - explorations of deep house themes with occasional nods to the dubby, African-influenced style Darsa would later explore on the Africanism project - sounding as fresh now as they did 16 years ago. Picking highlights is tricky, but we're particularly enjoyed the sparse, swinging dub-house of "Cage" (accompanied with a tasty drum dub) and the Chez Damier-influenced chug of "In & Out".

2014 continues in funky style with the latest release from one of Paris' finest purveyors of high quality underground electronic music. After January's powerful 'Width' EP, by Mandar, we 're proud to unveil the 'Minesis' EP from one of the French capital's most talented and diverse artists, S3A (Sampling As An Art) AKA Max Fader. S3A showcases his deep seated love for soul and house on this excellent five-track release, which as always is vinyl-only. Fader's appreciation of the traditions of electronic music are clear to hear throughout these smooth, organic productions. He's a man who values his 1210s just as much as his classic drum machines and this is clearly evident from the start with 'For Danilo' which blends diva-esque vocals with a rolling disco groove and nineties rave stabs to create an unforgettable vibe. 'Deep Into Amsterdam' takes us into jazzy deep house territory, with a slightly muted soulful vocal layered below smooth, bright keys and a solid set of percussion. On the flip 'Discofonk' continues to celebrate the era of funk and disco in supreme style, aiming straight for your hips and sending them into overdrive. S3A demonstrates his dexterity with the 2-minute hip hop beat on 'Piano Interlude' before we get more of that sleazy, blaxploitation atmosphere on 'Dirty Sampling Insomnia'.

Lazare Hoche Records push forward into 2014 with a brand new three-track EP from the collective known as Mandar. The three-man crew is made up of Lazare Hoche himself, along with his good friends Danish producer Samuel Andre Madsen and Dutchman Malin Genie. Those familiar with Lazare Hoche Records will recall that Mandar have already appeared on the label on I Don't Sync So Vol.II with 'Fouad' and 'St Eustache'. The 'Width' EP is the product of their continued working relationship; late-night studio sessions fueled by junk food, analogue gear and their combined passion for music that comes from the heart and soul. Across three tracks we witness the trio bear their souls on a collection of raw, uncomprimising music that refuses to subscribe to the latest trends. There is no bandwagon jumping here, just pure unadulterated club music. Take A-side 'Naughty Mandar' for instance, with its stripped down, barely there percussion and unrelenting bassline which trembles below softly swirling pads. In the background lurks the hushed whispers of a male vocal revealing his love for house music, it's dark and melancholy yet instilled with a feeling of hope. Title track 'Width' wastes no time in providing some bounce, kicking off with an energy which is maintained from start to finish. Sharp snares cut through celestial pads and jovial analogue stabs provide a bright juxtaposition to the morose bassline. Fresh from the release of their very first LP, here's an ultra rare repress coming from mid-nineties USA via one of the Paris finest new labels, Lazare Hoche Records. The bossman himself Lazare Hoche is an avid collector of rare house joints, and has a penchant for anything the truly epitomises the spirit of house music; raw, undiluted and full of funk. Unlike some collectors who never reveal their secrets, Lazare Hoche decided to share his knowledge of those hard-to-find tracks of the past with this new release, and so acquired the license for three tracks by the cult duo Nimbus Quartet grouping them all together in a special vinyl-only reissue. Nimbus Quartet was the short-lived partnership between Dave Stevens and acid legend Woody McBride. Between them they created gold dust, the kind of pure, unadulterated house music that sounds as fresh today as it did almost 20 years ago when it was first released. Although they only released two double 12inches on the legendary US based Sounds Records, those albums remain classics to this day. So it was only right that they be reissued for a whole new generation of house connoisseurs to enjoy. Strictly for the heads, we present the quirky "Later Lover", "Mouch Touch' with its classic guitar riff finish and the 12-minute masterpiece, "Your House Is Yours Part II&III".
