Following up after the mental drop by Detroit’s Master of Repetition, Population One, we have a new signing hailing from the Land of the Rising Sun, helping us to set the standards for this new imprint— uncompromised techno funk! Japanese producer Imugem Orihasam has spent the past 3 years slowly evolving. His early work on Ilian Tape and Esperanza sounds like that of an already seasoned craftsman digesting Detroit bit by bit, with a focus on lush textures and swooning eerie melodies. This past year has seen a spike in activity for Imugem, with releases on Patrice Scott’s Sistrum Recordings, Berlin’s Nsyde, and Adam Marshall’s New Kanada—all showcasing a more focused and exuberant approach that has sharpened his reflective compositions. With GEM, Imugem steps away from the supple melodies and tranquil atmospheres for a trip deep into the power plant. Working far from his comfort zone, he has fired off five tracks of puristic, hypnotic techno. We don’t mean template-driven chunky white label Discogs bait either, but something fashioned out of raw sound that places the channeling of energy above composition and cleverness. Opener 521 embodies this aesthetic with driving, echoing percussion and undulating sine waves accompanied by twisted pitch bent tones for slowly evolving static laden acid rawness. A big Sound for Big rooms to say the least for this number. A-side outro, Dissolve does just that, with some of the left over LFO nastiness from the opener boiling off.
On the B side, meditative interlude, Stare eases us into Gemikunat. Here Imugem takes a more subdued textural approach, with layers desiccated pads and modular filigree draped over a low slung broken beat rhythm. Great for opening a set or simply just taking the audience onto a different path, something Imugem does well. The improbably titled closer, Ls-VCR #E0302 brings back some more cavernous acid over some classic metallic warehouse percussion for a full on dance floor crusher.

Fragil Musique reaches the 20th release mark, and offers us a very special debut EP from a newcomer to watch. Vidock lands on the label with an unusual three tracker, oscillating between intense breakbeat excursions and moody Techno hybrids. "Dub Attack" is the main club weapon here. Cycling around the drum loop, pads and samples build up to heavy tension moments, then fade away to fully unleash the force of the stripped down broken kick-bass groove. The pressure is strong and never stops rising, gradually bringing the dancer to a manic arms-shaking state, while sporadic laser synth shots and percussion hints sprinkle the track, smartly shaping its three-dimensional aspect. On the B Side, dance music UFO "Metamorph" is an epic journey through what feels like unexplored fringes of sample driven emotional dance music. Movie-esque haunting voices and disturbing sirens set the vibe, inviting one to drift along this dark and coloured ride. Fellow Nantes native Simo Cell goes trippy on the remix, taking apart the most heady bits of the original and extending them into a deep and breaky piece.

Jäfar make a rapid return to the label and are back to grace the A Side of Fragil 019, while one half of the duo (Elliot Sindall) also pairs up with Constantin Nakov as Seura on the flip. Black Mamba recalls certain aspects of Jäfar's previous work on the Label: the broken drum line, the subtle vocal samples and the global hypnotic aspect of the music. Yet it is also radically different from Marzsia. Black Mamba is a subtle but direct club track, aiming to get the dancers down through its heavy groove. The kick drum and low toms are strongly suggesting leg movement, joining forces with the snares and hats which call upon some serious head nodding.On the B side, White Chapel is another broken beat club piece, but this time feels crafted for the afterhours. The groove is lighter and the heady feel is strong, closing the dancer's eyes and inviting them to drift through the music. Once again, Fragil comes up with original, well produced and highly danceable content, highlighting unsung talents for every versatile DJ out there.

Shortly after his first EP on Dnuos Ytivil, sub-division of Bristol imprint Livity Sound, Simo Cell, neo-Parisian and Nantes native, puts his second release out on Fragil Musique.On this one, the young producer asserts his Bass-tainted Electro influences.Highly skilled and very technical DJ, but above all open to bridges between genres and eras, the record feels like he conceived it for his own club usage.On the A side, two subtle twin tracks, "Reading Rashid" and "Soko Ban". Cycling melodies and hypnotic pads sketch two Bass outlines, as simple as effective, that seem perfectly fit for switching from a stripped down Techno track to and old Jungle weapon.On the flip, hit track "Meteor Racer" is surprising. A rawer and more stripped down Electro piece that lifts the veil a bit more on the young producer's talent.Those four brilliantly crafted track definitely place Simo Cell among the French newcomers to watch closely.

Fragil musique showcase for their sixteenth release, Nummer, a London-based duo that have been close to the label since they started. Emmanuel Corre and Silvère Letellier produce a broad and varied mixture of electronic music, merging club music with electronica and ambient. The pair's high versatility has been widely revealed through their releases on going good, peur bleue as well as on their own nummer music imprint. The strong attention they pay to rhythms and drum machines is obvious on all four pieces of this ep. Stripped out and dripping with groove, “Life Path III" presents warm and rhythmical tracks, backed up with a maelstrom of cosmic soundscapes and misty melodies. If the depth of their composition is only mildly shown on "The 4th dimension", it bursts to sight on “Circulation", with a winding rhythmic signature, floating on watery pads. "Earth shift" and "Cosmic love" lean more towards the dancefloor, while maintaining, in a similar way to their label mate tite, a deep and fleshly aspect that suits fragil perfectly

Nicolas villebrun, half of society of silence and acid square dance, is putting out his first solo album on fragil musique, accurately titled « snare roll lp ». Villebrun only needed a couple of recording sessions during a short period of time, to put the whole thing out from a unique set up. Although an accomplished musician, tite seems to leave his technical skills aside when crafting his music, embracing all the spontaneity one would expect from a techno producer. Listening to the lp, the title starts to make sense. When the snares are not rolling, the smooth basslines take over, strongly dragging bodies towards the dance floor. Hungry man, move into hell, a white track, and the amazing the bell glides are among those. Basslines curved as a horse's behind, subtly swifting through the air, are playing around with smartly spread out rhythms and textures. Tite comes up with nine commonly grounded tracks, but with the necessary talent and sharpness to produce a resolutely fine, homogeneous, and yet diversified techno lp. More
