After previously exhibiting his remixing dexterity on two other occasions, Myles Sergé returns to „made of CONCRETE“ to showcase his production chops in a four track EP revealing three originals and one rework. Firmly rooted in his hometown of Grand Rapids, a city along the legendary Detroit-Chicago axis, Sergé stays true to the musical hallmarks that made history in the scene, sketching up a contemporary soundscape with haunting old school influences. The EP unfolds as a real treasure trove, with each track digging deeper into the realms of dubbed out electronica, while masterfully blurring the lines between house and techno. Centered around an electric resounding motif, „Rules of Engagement“ kicks in with a triangulating synth kept afloat with subtle elements and variations, anchored in a complementing yet discrete bassline. „Everything In Darkness Comes To Light„ revolves around a funky chord progression, making for an unusual house exploration filled with whimpered vocals and eerie rustles. Aubrey steps in on the remix, offering up a cavernous take on „Rules Of Engagement“ by inserting major distortion in the initial synth lead. An array of glitches paired with metallic synths wind up a dynamic countermelody that ultimately takes over the entire groove. The eponymous „Walking Through Concrete“ bounces in with blunt percussion stabs paired with distant claves and clangs, gradually building up the main melodic loop. The entire release stands as evidence of Sergé’s ability to carve melodies into cold and dark concrete-like ambiances, doling out solid slices of groove-infused techno. More

Keeping up the urgent pace set by the Strength In Numbers collection, Thema now turns to a modern master of the JakBeat, D’Marc Cantu. Hailing from Ann Arbor on the fringes of Detroit, Cantu has worked for more than a decade developing a sound that carries the torch from the box jam originators of techno and house music. His first appearances were alongside the mighty Tadd Mullinix (better known as James T. Cotton) with their 2 AM/FM project, before bringing Traxx into the fold for the X2 venture. As a solo artist Cantu has shored up on labels as highly regarded as Crème Organization, M>O>S, Nation and Desire, bringing a rich, full-bodied sound laden with powerful synth hooks, crafty drum programming and a live, jammed-out delivery that overflows with imagination. Given his adventurous tendencies and punchy Midwestern finish, Cantu is a perfect fit on Thema and the six tracks that make up this record show a great deal of the diversity the man is capable of, from dancefloor burners to atmospheric introspections.

He describes himself as a reclusive perfectionist', whose haunting production sound reflects influences from early Detroit and Chicago electronic music. But Myles has a style of his own that blurs the lines between techno and house. With his first introduction to techno back in the late 80's he has continued to nurture his love for electronic music by DJing and producing, while more recently he also teamed up with long time friend and mentor Donnell Knox (D-Knox from Sonic Mind) to create Såure Music Distribution. Myles also delivers a more stripped-down uptempo techno track that we love him for, “TransMilenio”: its full on repetitive bassline should for sure inflict some dancefloor damage.

We would like to welcome Gonzalo Medina to the Knotweed family. Gonzalo MD is a young producer coming straight from Buenos Aires, Argentina. He likes to qualify his music as hypnotic dub techno with a touch of darkness & Detroit and we think that suits his sound very well. He tests his own productions regularly in Buenos Aires at Cocoliche, where he DJs often with all the usual suspects. “For our second release, I am very glad to welcome on board Myk Derill! Myk comes from Berlin, Germany. He already has several releases under his belt.
He creates a very dark techno, without any concessions, influenced by the current sounds of the techno underground I love. Myk Derill is a dj/ producer from Berlin , already well immersed in the german techno scene. As a big techno activist, he is the label owner of Glare records and regularly plays in several clubs and parties in Berlin. From the beginning , Myk Derill has developed a passion for the Detroit techno sound, particularly for the dub style of this sound. His inspiring influences are Mike Dehnert, Jeff Mills or even Ben klock. He started mixing in 1995 and nine years later began production. In 2006, he released his first EP "Meileinweit" on 2 sides records, which was a real success. Since then, he has worked with national and international artists as a remixer and producer and has also released many EP’s on several labels.”

Knotweed Records is a new label launched out of Chamonix, France, by Belgian DJ and producer Philippe Petit. Philippe Petit has been around the dance music scene for a good 20 years. When he was not playing in his thrash metal bands, he was going out but did not like the music he was hearing. That is when he started DJing. Very eclectic in the beginning, he quickly veered towards funk, hip hop and acid jazz in the early nineties, playing for Guru, Ronnie Jordan, Galliano, the Goats, Palm Skin Productions etc. In 1995, he moved to London. Having to stop his sweaty metal activities, he needed to find another way to release all his extra energy, this time on his own. That is the reason why slowly but surely he started to incorporate more and more techno into his DJ sets. By 1997, it was only techno that was coming out of his needles. Having no time to start producing tracks, he focused mainly on playing gigs across London, as well as the one-off gigs in Belgium, France, Italy and Spain, mixing deep house and techno, always with a funk twist. By 2000, he was sharing his time between Chamonix and London, where he became a regular at Cantina Club and at Soulfood. Two years ago he moved permanently to Chamonix where he now spends 100% of his time focusing on making music. After one year of trial, he comes with this first release. As Philippe is composing music mainly when the weather grounds him at home, the dark atmosphere of the steep-sided mountain environment can be felt in all tracks of this release. The sound is techno at its best, Detroit influenced, hypnotic, dubby, but always with a funk element incorporated in the tracks. The key here is energy and groove
