After previously exhibiting his remixing dexterity on two other occasions, Myles Sergé returns to „made of CONCRETE“ to showcase his production chops in a four track EP revealing three originals and one rework. Firmly rooted in his hometown of Grand Rapids, a city along the legendary Detroit-Chicago axis, Sergé stays true to the musical hallmarks that made history in the scene, sketching up a contemporary soundscape with haunting old school influences. The EP unfolds as a real treasure trove, with each track digging deeper into the realms of dubbed out electronica, while masterfully blurring the lines between house and techno. Centered around an electric resounding motif, „Rules of Engagement“ kicks in with a triangulating synth kept afloat with subtle elements and variations, anchored in a complementing yet discrete bassline. „Everything In Darkness Comes To Light„ revolves around a funky chord progression, making for an unusual house exploration filled with whimpered vocals and eerie rustles. Aubrey steps in on the remix, offering up a cavernous take on „Rules Of Engagement“ by inserting major distortion in the initial synth lead. An array of glitches paired with metallic synths wind up a dynamic countermelody that ultimately takes over the entire groove. The eponymous „Walking Through Concrete“ bounces in with blunt percussion stabs paired with distant claves and clangs, gradually building up the main melodic loop. Keeping up the urgent pace set by the Strength In Numbers collection, Thema now turns to a modern master of the JakBeat, D’Marc Cantu. Hailing from Ann Arbor on the fringes of Detroit, Cantu has worked for more than a decade developing a sound that carries the torch from the box jam originators of techno and house music. His first appearances were alongside the mighty Tadd Mullinix (better known as James T. Cotton) with their 2 AM/FM project, before bringing Traxx into the fold for the X2 venture. As a solo artist Cantu has shored up on labels as highly regarded as Crème Organization, M>O>S, Nation and Desire, bringing a rich, full-bodied sound laden with powerful synth hooks, crafty drum programming and a live, jammed-out delivery that overflows with imagination. Given his adventurous tendencies and punchy Midwestern finish, Cantu is a perfect fit on Thema and the six tracks that make up this record show a great deal of the diversity the man is capable of, from dancefloor burners to atmospheric introspections.

Myles Serg. is a DJ, musician and recording artist who has released on a vast swathe of labels that as well as Metamorphic, also includes FEROX, Caduceus, Knotweed, Ilian Tape, Sweatshop, Night Drive Music, Thema, Pushmaster Disc and his own imprints (MS), RE(FORM), Space, (MS), and Dosed Recordings. He describes himself as a reclusive perfectionist', whose haunting production sound reflects influences from early Detroit and Chicago electronic music. But Myles has a style of his own that blurs the lines between techno and house. With his first introduction to techno back in the late 80's he has continued to nurture his love for electronic music by DJing and producing, while more recently he also teamed up with long time friend and mentor Donnell Knox (D-Knox from Sonic Mind) to create Såure Music Distribution. Deep, moody, yet powerful techno from the Reclusive Perfectionist. Myles come up with two deeper, slower, moodier minimalistic tracks, venturing in more house territory: “Red Eye to Bogota” and “When I Meet God”. Both tracks go over 10 minutes during which Myles slowly tweaks the rhythmic elements, basslines and chords for your aural pleasure. Myles also delivers a more stripped-down uptempo techno track that we love him for, “TransMilenio”: its full on repetitive bassline should for sure inflict some dancefloor damage.
