Ultrasone, - Here And So Far

Ultrasone, - Meetin' Again

Ultrasone, - Motus
Ultrasone is the abundantly talented duo from Belgium currently lighting up some of the most influential labels on the planet. This time bringing their own particular brand of techy underground ethereal grooves to Supplement Facts, ‘Here And So Far EP’ is a mad trip that veers from delicate percussive minimalism to full on dancefloor demolition. Opening track ‘Here And So Far’ builds into a fizzing, chugging framework of metallic beats and swirling euphoric melodies as momentum ebbs and flows until the intricately laced textures intensify and the track results in a deep and heady thrill ride for the dancefloor, as driving as it is melodic. On a similar sonic chameleon streak - ‘Meetin’ Again’ spirals from a stripped back, brooding bassline with a hypnotic grip to a rise of warping synth patterns that eventually descend into a bouncing funk filled groove. Already getting rinsed by Seth Troxler and Bill Patrick, ‘Meetin Again’ is the creeper waiting to explode. Third up, ‘Motus’ is another meandering mood setter. Whispering winds create misty atmospherics while a pattering of light-footed percussion drives this rhythmic groove as the weird chiming melodies add a psychedelic dimension. Belgium born Igor Vicente and Vernon Bara were early party friends in their hometown of Mons and after a string of solo projects, have since developed a potent musical partnership in Ultrasone. Bara has already stacked up over 200 productions and remixes on labels such as OM, OFF, Robsoul and Toys For Boys and Igor Vicente runs one of Belgium’s most successful underground parties ‘Wildfamily’. Now having notched up releases on two of the most high-profile labels in the business – Hot Creations (‘Breath N Pop’) and earlier a track on the
Visionquest Spring/Summer Collection (‘Don’t Feel No Way’), it’s no wonder that master of modern house imprint Supplement Facts wants a slice of the action.

Real house master Phil Weeks makes his debut on Guy Gerber’s Supplement Facts imprint with a trio of dancefloor bombs packed with his signature bump, funk and bass. Title track ‘Sharks Looking For Fishes’ is a fuzzy, warm affair with warping pads and shimmering cow-bells building with dusty samples combined with a jacking bassline. On the B-side ‘Bees Assault’ is pure heads down techy business, unhinged and driving it’s the peak time banger of the release and an assault on the senses. Lastly, ‘Hold Onto The Memories’ brings back the French deep touch with another solid jacking groove and faded vox. Parisian DJ/Producer Phil Weeks is a purist plain and simple and has channelled his unwavering passion for unadulterated house almost exclusively through his own label Robsoul Recordings, established in 1999 and now one of the most consistent and respected labels in the business. Weeks released his highly acclaimed debut album ‘Love Affair LP’ in 2011 on Robsoul and the label is also home to releases from house royalty such as Derrick Carter, DJ Sneak, David Duriez and Chris Carrier. Weeks has also collaborated on a number of productions with Chicago hero DJ Sneak as well as fellow French innovators Chris Carrier and Dan Ghenacia. Phil Weeks will be a guest at Guy Gerber’s Wisdom Of The Glove party on 28th August at Pacha, Ibiza and it’s an honour to have him on the Supplement Facts imprint for this killer release. Bringing a mix of old-school Chicago with nu-school French flair, Phil Weeks has and always will be dedicated to delivering proper house music through his DJing, productions, label Robsoul and now through his Crate Diggin’ project that started in 2013 and further proves Weeks as a master of selection.

As Guy Gerber’s new season ‘Wisdom Of The Glove’ party at Pacha Ibiza proceeds with unstoppable momentum, it would appear that the man of the moment still finds time to discover high quality, arresting releases for his Supplement Facts label. The latest EP, ‘Paint It Black’, comes courtesy of an electric collaboration that recently proved its worth on a remix for Alland Byallo’s ‘Bygones’ release for Thoughtless Music. USA based duo H-Foundation and Switzerland’s David Durango join forces on this tech house two tracker, which see’s the artists explore the more dissident edges of the genre. As ‘Surface’ opens, it’s the beautifully textured, hollow sounding percussion that immediately sets out to sculpt a sophisticated groove. While the bass note grunts with a sultry force, sporadic minor chords smatter the top end to disorienting effect and its vocal is reduced to a distant, impersonal articulation. ‘Canvas’ eases you in with a maraca-esque hi-hat swing, but don’t be fooled into thinking that this is simply a frivolous club track. As the production unfolds, the bass stabs get darker, dissonant twangs become more frequent and breathy, uncomfortable inhalations make for a real sense of foreboding. It’s this perfectly balanced layering, organic structure and an intuition that never loses sight of the dance floor that really demonstrates the production power at work within this collaboration.

It’s a French and Dutch invasion coming up next on Supplement Facts as Parisian Julien Chaptal and Amsterdam’s Lauhaus deliver ‘Jujuman’ featuring a remix from French house royalty Franck Roger. ‘Jujuman’ is a midsummer night’s dream of percussive grooves and hints of the wilderness. Franck’s remix adds inflections of psychedelia and a dose of wiggly acid while B-side ‘Watching You’ is pure heads down hypnotic rolling. Julien Chaptal moved to Amsterdam around 2000 to keep pursuing his career in music. First shooting to fame as part of the Dutch outfit Le Clic whilst sound engineering for local bands and DJs, Julien built a solid reputation from local hero to international DJ/producer. Snapped up by Remote Area (breakthrough album ‘Tokens’ came in 2008 on the label) subsequent releases have graced labels such as Intacto, 20:20 Vision, Cityfox, Saved and most recently, Defected. Chaptal is known as one of Holland’s most agile techno artists – solo as well as together with like minded musicians Kabale und Liebe, Quazar, Boris Werner, David Labeij and Lauhaus under the Amsterdam 661 moniker. Also a Remote Area staple artist, Lauhaus has been on the Dutch techno scene for over ten years, starting the live project Polder in 2004 with David Labeji. As well as touring with Polder or Amsterdam 661, Lauhaus is at the helm of Amsterdam parties Mono, Traffic and Mr.Stubnitz. Franck Roger is a pioneer on the French house scene and runs the consistently impressive Real Tone Records. Second studio album ‘Extensions Of Yesterday’ has just been released via Circus Company.

A-side ‘We Are’ feat. Meital Derazone will immediately hook the crowd with a moody bass riff and dark echoing vox, slowly building into a hypnotic synth driven peak time voyage with an epic feel. Flip over to the B-side and ‘Orion Skies’ is a more understated affair lifted with floaty atmospherics as disembodied vocals whisper over the analogue groove and fluid pads and creeping chords permeate the spacey arpeggiated synths. Final track ‘Social Assassin’ has a more unhinged edge with deranged vocal clips, a tough percussive groove, trippy echoing FX and propulsive bass. Ascending organ chords lead to a dramatic bassline drop sure to destroy the dancefloor.

Guy Gerber welcomes the wonderfully talented Sonodab to his Supplement Facts imprint with his ‘Nowhere EP’ - four original tracks, taking you on a journey through deep, dubby house and techno. First up ‘Acid Rhythm’ is carried by a strong groove, flowing along on a deep hypnotic wave with warbling synths subtly rising and falling back into the deep dubby atmosphere. Holding onto the fluid movement and fuzzy warmth, ‘Ars Geotia’ takes a techno turn with warm stabbing keys and prominent hi hats that carry the track through a solid, groovy pace until the end. Next up ‘Freak’ is tighter, driving and techy with an array of intricate percussions and a precisely formulated loop, boasting plenty of swing and groove while later, warm pads envelop the rippling synth structures. Rounding off the EP and creating a cohesive whole, ‘Bon Voyage’ delivers a smooth dose of techno, beautifully textured with eerie haunts followed by dark waves and minimal clicks and bleeps.

Guy Gerber's Supplement Facts mark the next episode for the label with a enduring collection of their best-loved and future classic releases on .Heartbeats'. Featuring label stalwarts dOP, Lee Curtiss, Ryan Crosson & Guti and Guy Gerber himself, .Heartbeats' weaves through the intricacies of Supplement Fact's diverse sound. An embodiment of the ethereal yet always consistent and steadfast this special collection illustrates how label has shaped its character around a string of timeless creations. “For a long time we have worked the label on a feeling, and that feeling has served us and our artists well and led us to believe that we can help careers, even make them,” explains Israeli label head Guy Gerber of the ethos of his Supplement Facts label. “I would say we try to be as original and diverse as possible, sometimes focusing on the artistic side of electronic music and sometimes releasing strictly dance floor tracks.” Opening .Heartbeats' are the Brooklyn based musical partnership, No Regular Play, and their forthcoming synth led creature, .Fall Up To The Sky' featuring the vocals of Maya Hatch. The label's 20th release from Til Von Sein ensues, a melodic tapestry of house, before Visionquest man of the moment Lee Curtiss presents his illustrious style in .I Can Hear You Arthur', a sumptuous number that tows the line between the light and darkness of contemporary dancefloor music. Curtiss alongside fellow Visionquest member Ryan Crosstown have both released much original music on Supplement Facts and heralded key releases on the imprint. The broody nature of Supplement Facts rumbles in Michel Cleis' .Dark Glasses', presenting a driving track echoing with chimes echoes and tribal calls and smoothed down with sweet saxophone solos. Crosson collaborates with South American creative, Guti on .You've Got Me', a tantalizing affair teasing its flavours out slowly. Its skipping beats and sassy vocal licks culminate in an encompassing bass and a swirling breakdown to get lost in. The enigmatic French trio and Supplement Facts label staples, dOP unleash a unique sonic assault of deep and visceral house music in .The Genius Of The Crowd' and .Half Naked'. In typical style, dOP flirt with whispered vocals and massage the energies of the body with a playful and soothing approach. Seuil's .Ultravision' brought the talented Parisien to Supplement Facts for the first time earlier this year. The mesmeric progression of liquid bleeps and deep rhythms is heightened by the poignant and husky drawl of Jaw bleeding through this enveloping crisp record. Guy Gerber rounds of the compilation with two of his own releases, the new ominous siren filled .Nothing Can Be True', taken from sessions with P Diddy and closes with the radiant .Hate Love', remixed by Chicago's finest lady, Kate Simko. Gerber has reinvented his own strain of house music and taken the underground music scene by storm in his short career. The Israeli beholds a dream like fluid vision of contemporary dance music that resonates through his label's own sound, imprinting itself into the wider consciousness. Gerber started Supplement Facts in 2006 to explore the outer realms of his imagination, since which he has embedded it deeply within the world of electronic music. One of the only labels to emerge from Israel, its innovative and original approach has not gone unnoticed by the broader community. .Heartbeats' marks a new chapter as Supplement Facts embark on an expansion through a string of pioneering album projects. Much of this year has seen Gerber locked in the studio working on his own collaboration with P Diddy. However Supplement Facts remains his priority, reflected in the continued evolution of its music and ethos. “We are stepping up our game. We want to make albums, we want to A&R artists to produce with, even write. We want to take the label on the road and do parties that reflect the diversity of not just our artists, but our taste. More importantly, we want to have fun. The music industry is not an easy place in 2011, people don't really make money like they used to, so for us it is important to entertain not just our audience but also ourselves.” Guy Gerber 2011.

The enigmatic French trio dOP unleash another sonic assault of deep and visceral house music on Guy Gerber's Supplement facts imprint with three bold and organic cuts for 'Your Sex'. A dark broody and characteristically cheeky affair, 'Your Sex' opens up this dOP creation with a stripped back beat and looped vocal. Low-end bass build up the title track to a crescendo that engulfs the senses in deep acid frequencies. This is a nod to the techno elite but fusing a new depth and sensuality to the genre, in true dOP style. Skipping into subtle and kinetic territory, 'Half Naked' flirts with reverberating whispered vocals and crisp percussive beats. A lethargic and almost yearning record, it massages the energies of the body with a playful and soothing approach. Last up Paul Ritchtackles a remix of the title track, elevating those throbbing bass elements to new levels with a fluttering and-high energy weapon made to hypnotise the feet, body and mind. dOPis the musical summation of a 20 year long friendship between members Clement Aichelbaum, Damien Vandesande and Jonathan Illel, Their musical relationship beginning in 1994 as the result of a rock & roll cover band formed for the French National Day of Music, experimenting in hip-hop, jazz, and reggae followed by various musical incarnations. In 2005 they made the transition into electronic music and last year delivered a highly regarded debut artist album on Circus Company, noted in The Guardian newspaper as 'steeped not in orthodox 4/4 house and techno, but in jazz, classical, hip-hop and world music".

Sierra Sam, Marcus Vector, - Flagboy feat. Rockey Washington
Supplement Facts Records takes us to that Detroit sound, with their next release featuring Sierra Sam & Marcus Vector... the auteurs of industrial techno. The man made jobs E.P. is an eager little package of tracks with a nod to the past, but with its sight set straight to the future. The opener "Gangsta Pimp Style" echoes Techno's birth-city, driving beats and metallic stabs of synths merging with the spoken word rhetoric, intermittently making itself known throughout the pieces sprawling 7-minute runtime. "Things You Do" moves things to a bit lighter frame, but don't let that description lull you into thinking it as throwaway. This tracks dominates with the ever-present high stringnote that made so many hits in the past. This classic sensibility and a vocal hook which you will be humming for days later...make this track memorable. Taking us straight to the 90's, "Flagboy" is the final track to round up this powerhouse of a release. Featuring vocals from Rockey Wahington, this track encompasses the likeability & flavor needed for a classic house record unlikely to leave your bag. Its all there - the piano stabs, the cowbells, the soulful vocal; all these elements mixing together to create a track so euphoric that you can finally delete your "Pusher-man" contact from your blackberry because this is the newest legal high!
