Following his recent studio album with Afrobeat Academy, ’Love And Death’, his first international release, Ghanaian highlife guitar legend Ebo Taylor teams up again with Strut for a long overdue definitive compilation of his seminal 1970s recordings, ‘Life Stories’. During Ghana’s highlife explosion during the 1950s and ‘60s following wartime highlife pioneers like E.T. Mensah, Ebo Taylor made his name as a prolific composer, arranger and frontman leading two of Ghana’s greatest big bands - Stargazers and Broadway Dance Band. Moving to London to study music in 1962 alongside West African luminaries like Fela Kuti and Peter King, Taylor formed the Black Star Highlife Band and began incorporating
jazz elements into traditional highlife forms. Returning to Ghana, Taylor became an in-house arranger and producer for Dick Essilfie-Bondzie’s Essiebons label, working with other major Ghanaian stars like C.K. Mann and Pat Thomas. Through the ’70s, he then recorded a number of solo projects, exploring unique fusions and borrowing elements from regional Ghanaian folk music, Afrobeat, jazz, soul and funk.

Originally released in 1977, Ebo Taylor's self-titled album is a rarity that truly exposes the genius of the Ghanaian producer and arranger. Having spent most of the 1970s involved in Ghana's afro-funk output, working with different bands and musicians alike, Taylor put forward his own unique blend of Ghanaian highlife and afro-beat with this self-titled release.
The six songs that make up the album exemplify Taylor's desire to experiment and move beyond the constraints of colonial influences on Highlife and African musical traditions. Saana combines highlife guitars and jazz horns with a funked up rhythm and the sweetest chants, a vibe carried over on Ntsir A with its funky horns and Ghanaian singing. Throughout the album Taylor injects elements of funk, jazz and afrobeat into his compositions without being obvious, instead channelling the experimentation he once referred to as ?a way to develop our African music to enable us to get global attention.' Heaven is perhaps the album's highlight and widely recognised as one of the finest examples of Ghanaian afrobeat from the late 70s. Its popularity has endured through the decades and the song even found a new lease of life after Usher sampled it.

Strut link up with one of the true greats of Ghanaian music, Ebo Taylor, for his first internationally released new studio album in over 20 years. Following the wartime big band highlife pioneers like E.T. Mensah, Taylor became a major figure in Ghanaian highlife during the 1950s and ‚60s as highlife exploded. Cutting his teeth with leading big bands like Stargazers and Broadway Dance Band, Ebo Taylor quickly rose through the ranks and became a prolific composer and frontman. “There weren’t many composers in those days for the big bands,“ remembers Taylor. “The composers were in demand – the bands were large and the scores were very involved.“ Taylor moved to London in 1962. “Those were the days we were all into jazz, me and Nigerians like Peter King and Fela Kuti – we wanted to play like Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell. I had the Black Star Highlife Band sponsored by the Ghanaian High Commission, mainly comprising music students. We tried to incorporate jazz into highlife and progressed through talking and through jam sessions, trying to
develop our skills and ideas. We’d sing about politics and situations – like how cold London’s weather was!“ Interest in Ebo Taylor’s music has grown in recent years with a series of
Ghanaian compilations on Soundway Records and Analog Africa and an unexpected sample as Usher lifted a riff from ‚Heaven’ for his hit ‚She Don’t Know’. A new Ebo Taylor album was a natural progression. “For new album, I wanted to advance the cause of Afrobeat music. Fela started it and we shouldn’t just abandon it. Strut present a new single vinyl reissue of Vambe"s sought-after privately pressed album from 1982, Drumland Dreamland. A self-taught drummer, inventor, and sonic experimentalist, Vambe holds a unique place in British music. The creator of his own instrument, the drumgita (pronounced "drumguitar") or string-drum, he aimed to create music that had never been previously made to pursue access to the fourth dimension and forge a radical new musical language - intuitive, polyrhythmic and metaphysical. Drumland Dreamland is deep and haunting; a dense tapestry of layered percussion, time-warped tape loops, and spiralling drumgita figures, all underpinned by hypnotic improvisations from Brazilian pianist Rafael Dos Santos. It is both ecstatic and unsettling, a landmark recording in black British experimental music.

The album plays with time, mixing hypnotic, trance-like drumgita pieces with the same segments played backwards. You can hear echoes of African drumming traditions, minimalist repetition, and tape-manipulated musique concrète - but ultimately, the album defies genre. It is a solitary voyage, spiritual and futuristic.

In 1975, the late DJ / producer and jazz distributor Jimmy Gray and James "Plunky" Branch joined a musical revolution, founding Black Fire Records and releasing the label"s debut album, the classic African Rhythms by Oneness of Juju. This July, Plunky brings this important musical relationship full circle with Made Through Ritual, produced by Plunky"s son Jamiah "Fire" Branch and Jimmy"s son Jamal Gray. The resulting album is a fascinating listen. Opening with the meditative soul chant "Share This Love" voiced by regular Oneness vocalist Charlayne "Chyp" Green, the album opens out into a series of jazz vignettes including the title track, "In Due Time" and "Free Spirit". The powerful album closer, "Children Of The Drum" celebrates black culture and legacy through the poetry of Roscoe Burnem.

Unquestionably one of the most important Japanese jazz albums ever recorded, Scenery reveals Ryo Fukui as a miraculously brilliant self-taught pianist fusing modal, bop, and cool jazz influences for a very personal, dexterous and game-changing take on classic standards made famous by Bing Crosby and John Coltrane among others. From "It Could Happen To You" and its serene and calm intro which magically flows into a jubilant and upbeat piece, to the out-of-this-world piano solo of "Early Summer", or the incredible teamwork of "Autumn Leaves" where Fukui leads Satoshi Denpo (bass) and Yoshinori Fukui (drums) into groove heaven, every single note on the album oozes precision, confidence and flair and every single section slides seamlessly into one another, creating a supreme and elegant blend of jazz. Often compared to McCoy Tyner or Bill Evans, Ryo Fukui was a genius in his own right, a true master of his craft whose perfectionism gave birth to some of the greatest music ever recorded. Scenery is his magnum opus and an absolute must-have.
The Hokkaido wizard-pianist followed Scenery with the soulful gem Mellow Dream (also available on We Release Jazz) in 1977. He then focused on improving his live skills, often performing at Sapporo's Slowboat Jazz Club (which he co-founded with his wife Yasuko Fukui) and releasing 2 live albums. Ryo Fukui sadly passed away in March 2016, leaving behind a legacy of works that is sure to captivate jazz lovers for generations to come.

This latest release finds members Rudolf Klorzeiger and To-Nhan in deep inquiry in sound, contemplating structure and pattern in physics and nature resulting in a harmonious audio tessellation.
Metasymmetry itself relates to a kind of second-order reality found not in the structures of life but in the rules that govern these structures; that order exists not only in things but in the relationships among systems of order. It is a structure of structures, a logic of laws, an abstract unity embedded in the act of transformation itself.
Accordingly, the four-track EP reflects this duality. Each side opens with a piece of electronic music at its most precise and immovable: defined, kinetic, architectural. This is followed by a second composition that dissolves into a weightless, atmospheric counter-form.
The shift evokes a higher symmetry: an alignment not of parts, but of principles; a sonic model of the universe’s hidden invariance.

Dallas Native Lance Desardi arrived in Los Angeles alongside his roommate JT Donaldson sometime around 1999. At that time I was the head buyer & managing L.A’s largest independent dance music shop in the heart of Hollywood “Beatnonstop” on Melrose Avenue. We had just put out a double pack vinyl on Beatnonstop and a single on PCH feat. Myself & Cpen on both.
Lance & J.T were introduced to me by Chris Penny aka CPen who was also a Dallas transplant to L.A and as chance would have it they were both looking for jobs. The two had been sojourning in Chicago for about two years under the tutelage of Spencer Kincy aka Gemini and the House Mayor of Chicago Derrick Carter.
I hired them both and we soon became fast friends. I would lend them pieces of gear and keyboards etc to work on projects and suddenly we had this little community of producers and artist’s working on beats, bringing them into the shop for “show & tell.”
This created a healthy atmosphere of us all pushing each other to make songs for the labels. This is one of the reasons Seductive, Pacific Coast House & Pacific Traxx etc were started to house the different projects and alias’s of us at that time.
One day Lance showed up to work at the shop beaming from ear to ear a some pep in his step. Him and another co-worker Jaime G had gone into the studio that week and banged out “Jazz Salad.”
As soon as Lance slipped in the DAT tape and the track came thundering through the speakers with Jaime’s deep Latin intro I knew it was going to be a big tune in the underground. Such a groove and so infectious it is undeniable even today 20 odd years
later.
So nice to see it back out on wax and not at the hefty discogs price tag of over a hundred quid! The flip side “Boing” is a deep late night groover that fits nicely into a Mark Farina style set with bonus beats to boot. Not to be missed. Classic.
