Samuli Kemppi may have begun in warm house climes as the duo Sam & Gigi, but he has since found his niche and fame sound tracking the deep and icy black recesses of space. 2009's Komisch debut, 'Deep Space Helsinki EP', birthed the galactic signature that would come to define his solo techno output for labels like Prologue, Mote-Evolver and Perc Trax, meanwhile cementing his stylistic meanderings to a single, albeit flexible, narrative. 'Parallax Of One Second EP' is Samuli Kemppi's third outing on M_Rec Ltd, after the full 'Cyclic Model EP' and remix inclusion on Ben Gibson's 'More Than Milk', and sees the Fin plundering the astronomic theme once again with stellar sci-fi precision.
On the A-side: 'Extragalactic' opens with swirling technoid vistas, on a wonky robo-dance floor in a future imaged long ago. Warbling chimes and tweeting astro-creatures continue to plague 'Astrometric Precision', bleating at one another on our serene shuttle through the cosmos. The B-side then takes a decided plunge with tougher piston sounds and grittier textures on 'More Than Parsec' as our journey becomes more wild-eyed, concluding in the keyed radio-distress signals and itchy hats of 'Less Than Planck'. I guess we're never getting home wherever that may be, but this new universe isn't so bad after all. More

With a techno career stretching nearly a decade, Finland’s Samuli Kemppi is a natural choice for the fourth edition of THEMA’s continuing Chronicle series. His intensely rhythmic, futuristic style has been making its mark across Europe since 2004, but it was really four years later, when he was picked up by Ostgut Ton, Prologue, and Kosmisch, that the world found out the true impact of his sound. Since then he’s enjoyed his strongest support from the last of these imprints and, even more importantly, from Luke Slater’s powerhouse Mote-Evolver, a go-to since its inception in 2006 for the freshest sounds techno has to offer. Following the summer launch of his own Deep Space Helsinki label, we are proud to announce Kemppi’s Chronicle debut with Voyager, an EP of deep, science fiction sounds backed by intense beats. Characteristically for the producer, there’s no waiting to unleash the barrage of elastic basslines and layered percussion we receive in Transmission. The steadily-thickening synthesizer textures grow throughout its length, but so does the density of the drum patterning; it makes for an unstoppable catapult launch into alien territory to start the EP. A2 Horizon is more grim and heads-down, an exploration of the cosmic void between galaxies which gradually falls into accelerating orbit around a distant body. B1’s Beacon may move similarly, but it starts with a clearer trajectory and a more hopeful end point in keeping with its title. His signature busy drum machines are at their most linear and smooth here, and rather than disorient the listener they provide propulsion for the mission. The unforgiving rhythmic jack of Echoes has strong gravity, and an optimistic melody gradually swells from uneasier beginnings to finish the voyage. To ease down listeners from the depths of this dense EP, we’ve included an ambient interlude as the closer; starting off with sci-fi themes, it disintegrates into a haze of woozy echoes and rhythmic bursts of static before simply fading into the ether. Taken together, these five pieces clearly chart the continuing outbound path of Chronicle and Kemppi to the interstellar regions of techno’s growing universe.

Finnish techno producer Samuli Kemppi returns to Komisch for his third release. Leading the charge against malfunctioning computer systems and faceless corporations on this killer three-track EP is ‘Escape’. A surging, rippling bassline and heavy claps provide the basis for insistent bleeps and a surging, enveloping chord sequence that dispells even the most malevolent enemy. Next up is ‘Hostile’, which follows a similar approach. Clipped drums and hissing percussion are mixed with an acid-spiked bassline and a sinister synth riff. It’s a more sinister take on Samuli’s big room techno and is sure to appeal to those who like it darker and deeper. The EP ends with ‘System’. Kemppi’s razor sharp percussion and tough beats are audible once again as he juggles bubbling acid bass licks with frequency-shifting tones and eerie synth riffs. Let ‘Quadrant’ help you escape the mundane realities of every day life!

Komisch goes back in time for the story behind its fifteenth release. Alpha Code is the project of a Milanese producer who was inspired by the emerging techno scene in Italy during the early 90s. Seeking to translate the mind-bending sounds of Lory D, ACV and Sandro Galli, he bought some basic equipment and started to experiment. But just as he was about to start releasing techno records in 1996, he was offered the chance to script a small film in Hollywood. That job saw him moving to LA, where he now works full-time as a soundtrack writer and producer. By chance, on a recent visit back to Milan to see his parents, he was going through some belongings and found some dust-covered demos from early 1996.
Inspired by the raw techno sounds on the demo, he returned to his studio and created 'Brave New World' and 'Kazohinia', two driving tracks that resonate with insistent analogue bleeps, firing percussion, swirling synths and brooding bass pulses. This is the first time that Alpha Code's music has been available on vinyl and Komisch is proud to put out tracks by one of Italy's past masters.

SP-X, - The Escape
Following his release on Peter Van Hoesen’s Time To Express late last year, SP-X drops his third EP for Komisch. Fans of ‘Signal Path Experiments’ and ‘Field Lines Never End’ will not be disappointed as the Brussels-based producer serves up three more slices of uncompromising warehouse techno. Lead track ‘The Escape’ has all the SP-X hallmarks - rock hard beats, thundering claps and a swinging groove that underpins eerie riffs and clanking metallic drums‘Stalker’ reveals a more musical slant to SP-X’s sound. It starts off with unsettling riffs, but soon the rolling drum-led arrangement changes tact and provides the backdrop for a growling chord climax. There is a similar concession on ‘Attack Pattern’; bruising doubled-up drums and that unmistakably snappy SP-X percussion combine with subtle snare rolls to create a peak time arrangement. But once again an insistent chord sequence gives it the edge over functional techno. Make sure to hunt this killer release down !
