Longevity is something we talk about a lot in dance music nowadays. But timelessness, however frequently mentioned, is in fact a rare and sadly lacking ingredient in much of today‘s music. Well, you can thank Steve Bug and the Poker Flat crew that this isn‘t the case here, as we present the second unavoidable installment in the ‚Raw Essentials‘ feature, reviving some classic moments from the Raw Elements catalogue. Re-borne for another chance to rock it, Russ Gabriel‘s intense tweaked out remix of Steve Bug‘s ‚Honeymoon‘ fi nds the coveted position of A1. British born Gabriel produced some of the fi nest moments of the late nineties, and this technoid groover still stands out above many as a bold and futuristic statement about the pure electronic soul that this music thrives off. Just what is it about a combination of sounds or rhythms that has the ability to hook us in so gracefully and so completely? The answer is of course not in words... In 1995 Steve Bug had a passion for a sound that simply wasn‘t being represented elsewhere in Electronic music at the time. As a reaction, he launched the infamous ‚Raw Elements‘ label which today stands on a pedestal amongst some of the most revered labels in House Music history. This defiant sound, stripped of all un-necessaries, had the power and foresight to influence far further than Bug had ever expected... And now we‘ve gone full circle, with the re-release of several classics from the Raw Elements back-catalogue. A digital-only compilation made up of 15 carefully chosen visions will accompany two very special vinyl releases, as we proudly introduce, ‚Raw Essentials‘! Who better to open the party but Steve Bug himself, with the robotic swagger of ‚Rhodes Flash‘ which bravely and irresistibly combines a driving, sci-fi warehouse groove with soft mellowed out Rhodes keyboard chords. This is a magical journey of a track, unashamedly influenced by New York House and jazz formations, but comes across ever-so relevant today, particularly during the tingling breakdown, where Vincenzo strips the track down to its bare essentials and then gloriously re-introduces the kick. Watch out for this one in the late mornings...! It‘s also with a certain sense of pride that we remind you that this track was part of his first ever solo EP, released on Raw Elements in 1997! ‚Essentials‘ Part 1 is concluded with the fittingly named ‚All Night‘, by Steve Bug under his ‘Superlova’ guise. And its a joyful track, which will undoubtedly be used and abused on dancefloors everywhere once again thanks to its strict use of sounds and constant club vibe. Cleverly working the arrangement, Bug takes influence from the more jacking edge of the spectrum, but refuses to overload the track with layer upon layer of sound. Joe Davies aka DJ Assam makes a welcome return to Smallville following his ‘Shields In Full Sunlight’ LP with the ‘Pardon My Late Response’ EP.
The past decade has seen DJ Assam releasing material for the likes of (his own imprint) Lehult, that he runs with a few friends, KANN Records, Super Tuff and Smallville Records sub-label Down by the Lake, as well as Djing regularly at hotspots across Europe and beyond.
Last year he made his debut on Smallville appearing under his own name- Joe Davies with a long player project. Here he returns with more of his distinctive deep and hypnotic style on a new EP for Smallville.
Up first on the package is ‘Errol Dub’, a six minute journey traversing through bouncy bass tones, airy chords, crisp shuffled percussion and modulating synth lines before ‘Unknown’ dives deeper via a reduced rhythm section, acid synth bleeps, soft bell tones and subtly naunced atmospherics. Opening the flip-side ‘1234 Love’ captures a more raw aesthetic with saturated drums at its core while an amalgamation of modulating synth licks and ethereal pads ebb and flow throughout. The Frankfurt Mix of ‘Hi Life’, known from Joe's mesmerizing Smallville album, rounds out the release, journeying into dub territory courtesy of spiralling echoes and slowly unfurling chords underpinned by a bumpy off-kilter drum groove.

The album - entitled 'Ghost Lights' - comes as a gatefold 2x vinyl LP, showcasing the latest epoch of Modell's signature soundscapes. Spread across four parts, 'Ghost Lights' draws out a wide, cinematic sound - with long arching contours, rippling textures and cavernous sound design.
Woven with layer upon layer of hidden fragments and supernal transmissions, each chapter takes the listener successively deeper into the twilight zone. Harking to dramatic off-world topographies and interstellar spaces, the work glistens with opulent sound treatment and monumental grandeur. Dense pulsations move with oceanic force, marked by washes of celestial light and subterranean drones. Exercising another side to Rod Modell's typically atmospheric productions, this album comes with an ambitious framework and a more assertive sound. Imagine a held-up-in-traffic Wayne Shorter arriving late to a Weather Report studio session and Joe Zawinul, Victor Bailey, and Omar Hakim filling in the time by jamming on a grooving house cut. Had that happened, it might have sounded a little bit like “It Never Stops,” one of two ultra-fresh tracks on Kaidi Tatham's Yore debut. Jazz and house are obviously distinct genres, yet as this irresistible cut makes clear swing is common to both. The other track, the cerebrally titled “One for the Brain,” locates itself closer to house music proper but is no less appealing for doing so.

“It Never Stops” rolls in on a wave of silky synthesizer textures and percolating precision with a tight, funky groove that instantly pulls you into its velvety world. Triangles, electric bass, and clavinet add collective radiance to the material as the tune struts its way into your psyche. As if to make the jazz connection even more explicit, Tatham works an acoustic piano solo into the cut's second half before shifting focus back to the groove for the coda. “One for the Brain,” by comparison, digs into its chugging house pulse with fervour whilst also sweetening the arrangement with painterly synth flourishes. This one charges with breathless determination and like “It Never Stops” nods in jazz's direction with the inclusion of a freewheeling piano solo. Every minute and second on this strictly limited 12“ release seem's meaningful.

Imagine a held-up-in-traffic Wayne Shorter arriving late to a Weather Report studio session and Joe Zawinul, Victor Bailey, and Omar Hakim filling in the time by jamming on a grooving house cut. Had that happened, it might have sounded a little bit like “It Never Stops,” one of two ultra-fresh tracks on Kaidi Tatham's Yore debut. Jazz and house are obviously distinct genres, yet as this irresistible cut makes clear swing is common to both. The other track, the cerebrally titled “One for the Brain,” locates itself closer to house music proper but is no less appealing for doing so.

In an unprecedented international collaboration, Energy Exchange Records presents 'The Napoli Exchange' - the brainchild of Energy Exchange Records co-founders, Lewis and Ziggy, joining forces with producer and label boss Federico Gallotti (Tartelet / La Scimmia), the project was inspired by numerous visits to Naples, allured by the mediterranean breeze and of course the underground disco and funk forged by labels such as Early Sounds and Periodica Records.
