Not all music can cope with physical reality. Instruments can be pushed until they lose grip. Eventually, they will slip so far that their untethered voice is all that remains. Panoram follows up on his Pianosequenza series engaging in seventeen excursions into playing the part of the piano that doesn't exist, coaxing out inarticulate feelings in lieu of familiar characteristics. Sounds and rhythms resulting from thoughts that can't be put into quite the right words.

Panoram makes soundtracks for daydreams gone sideways. Picture the scene: an afternoon nap with the television on, quietly, in the corner; snatches of conversation drift in through the open window. Wandering, half-formed thoughts take unexpected detours; before you know it, there’s a movie playing out against closed lids, the colors bright, the characters unfamiliar. Accidental rhythms, incidental melodies, imitations of life, messages in code.
Across 17 fragmentary, sketch-like tracks, Panoram carves a labyrinthine path in which nothing is what it seems: a fantasy world of breathy vox pads, faux guitar, detuned synths, bursts of flute and orchestral percussion, and even the occasional cheeky cartoon sample. It’s chillout music with a chilly edge, ambient with a darkly ironic undertone. Panoram has been making music under his principal alias for more than a decade now, releasing albums on labels like Firecracker, Running Back, and his own Wandering Eye. (He has also performed and recorded with Amen Dunes, and has co-production credits on Amen Dunes’ forthcoming Sub Pop album Death Jokes.) Panoram’s output has ranged widely, taking in abstract pop, classical composition, twisted takes on library music, and cyborg funk. One record of “bio-acoustic transmissions” came with a cannabis leaf pressed in clear wax; his 2021 album Pianosequenza Vol. 1 gathers his experiments on the Yamaha Disklavier. But Great Times offers the truest picture yet of a project that has never been easy to pin down.

Following up last year’s Acrobatic Thoughts album, Panoram delves even deeper into his own musical universe with Keep Looking Where The Light Comes From. We find the producer in confident form, exploring the fuzzy fringes of beauty and chaos. The result is an album that sounds even more like himself and yet surprising at each turn.
Opening track Feathers sounds like only Panoram can, buzzy arpeggiated distortion takes flight somewhere in the direction of a distant multiverse where Animal Collective and Boards of Canada soundtracked Koyaanisqatsi. But the psychedelic drift is all Panoram’s own, conjuring a stark sense of the uncanny with the repeated phrases. The digital guitar and vocal loops of I Can Only Repeat Your Love are practically on the brink of collapsing in on themselves, to the point where the structure begins to shift like a collapsing monument. Flat Stones nods towards ASMR, as flute and woodwind tones caress the ears and a whispered voice teases out an altered state.
It’s this dreamlike mood that pervades the whole album, a maximal effect that’s wrung from minimalist compositions. The Wide House picks up the baton from Laurie Anderson to trip gently through different states of awareness, while the piano patterns of Blank Sheep float through the synth ambience like ideas entering an empty dream. There Is A Hole Here is another mutant loop that unravels as it proceeds - the rhythms turn into a pulse, and despite what the lyrics say, it does indeed mess around with your brain.
Panoram balances dance tropes, classical composition, ambient drones and a washed out, fuzzy twist on avant garde pop, and manages to transform it all into a uniform whole that fits all those puzzle pieces together. Yet such is the assuredness of Panoram’s production that it sounds effortless. At this point, the music is more like a midwife, manifesting your future self‘s enlightened consciousness with surreal effect.

Panoram’s „vivid and eccentric new album“ (based on Philip Sherburne via Pitchfork) gets the remix treatment by Quiet Village and Luca Lozano. A cornucopia of possibilities, aural delicacies and pulsating sounds, Acrobatic Thoughts would be a rewarding task for any remixer and is a real gift for the relevant guests.
Matt Edwards’ and Joel Martin’s Quiet Village project can’t be beat when it comes to meandering, prolix and cinemascope-styled tracks and remixes (see their Allez Allez African Queen one for further notice). Thus, their version of „Seabrain“ is a 11 minute long interpretation. Propelled by ocean travel transmissions, deep sea fantasies, sonar tones and a bubbling bass line, it’s the finest piece of submarine house and feels like a long lost cousin to Link’s Amenity (we take a bow). Addictive and refreshing.
Wandering Frames follows a similar path on the desk of Luca Lozano. But instead of the abyssal-benthic zone, he takes it higher up in the air. Sitting comfortably on little fluffy clouds, reinforcing the UK bleep continuum and adding skippy beats, Lozanos remix appeals to hypno house collectors, slow-motion b-boys-girls and ecstatic dance fans alike. Peak time can have many hours.

Here he delivers a masterclass in emotionally charged contemporary house with his signature depth and musicality.
Spanish producer Nacho Marco makes a very long overdue return to Freerange with a sublime of classic feel-good
rolling deepness entitled The Flying Fox. His Sweetest EP dropped almost 20 years ago (and still gets played by
Jane Fitz) and he’s recently released on Chiwax, Phonogramme and his own Loudeast. Fans of his sound will know
what to expect - sun-streaked, hypnotic grooves with a melancholic undercurrent perfect for the heads down 4am
moments.
Ending on a blissed out, chilled vibe we have a very special track from Lovebirds entitled Janet Nice. The perfect
closing track for this landmark release, Lovebirds goes heavy on the emotive pads and reverb-soaked stabs all

Laurie Torres is a Canadian musician and composer raised in Montréal, Québec by Haitian parents. Since 2008, she has been a trusted stage and studio performer for Julia Jacklin, Pomme, and Land of Talk, as well as being a founding member of Folly & The Hunter, with whom she recorded four studio albums and toured Canada, Europe and the UK.
Centering around piano, drums and synthesizer with interweaving field recordings, 'Après coup' follows the precursor ep 'Correspondances' in the form of a sprawling 11-track album. Translating directly from French - afterwards, after the event - its title subliminally points at something deeper between the lines. Recorded in 2023 between tours in a small window of time where 'normal' life hadn't quite recommenced, Torres meticulously crafted her debut solo material in view of surrounding nature, all providing the perfect nourishment for long streams of improvisation. Built right up to the edge of a lake, Studio Wild in St-Zénon, Québec offered an unparalleled location and set up for her freeform creativity.
Instrumental music seemed like a natural response and evolution for Torres who had long basked in the world of "pop music" as she elaborates: "I had an urge to use creativity as a sort of resting place, a place where things can unfold slowly and take time to reveal themselves. In other worlds words, I felt the need to make something slower, more elusive"
The immediacy of Torres' recorded takes doubled with minimal overdubs create a fiercely direct, intimate and unpolished lo-fi beauty. 'Après coup' then is self-reflective, open and inclusive with Torres allowing herself to be fully seen. An album to be felt at close distance with unrivalled authenticity. This album stands as a testament to Laurie's artistic evolution and serves as a beacon, inspiring her to continue nurturing her own creative pursuits and finding exhilarating freedom.

Since 2008, she has been a trusted stage and studio performer for Julia Jacklin, Pomme, and Land of Talk, as well as being a founding member of Folly & The Hunter, with whom she recorded four studio albums and toured Canada, Europe and the UK.
Centering around piano, drums and synthesizer with interweaving field recordings, 'Après coup' follows the precursor ep 'Correspondances' in the form of a sprawling 11-track album. Translating directly from French - afterwards, after the event - its title subliminally points at something deeper between the lines. Recorded in 2023 between tours in a small window of time where 'normal' life hadn't quite recommenced, Torres meticulously crafted her debut solo material in view of surrounding nature, all providing the perfect nourishment for long streams of improvisation. Built right up to the edge of a lake, Studio Wild in St-Zénon, Québec offered an unparalleled location and set up for her freeform creativity.
Instrumental music seemed like a natural response and evolution for Torres who had long basked in the world of "pop music" as she elaborates: "I had an urge to use creativity as a sort of resting place, a place where things can unfold slowly and take time to reveal themselves. In other worlds words, I felt the need to make something slower, more elusive"
The immediacy of Torres' recorded takes doubled with minimal overdubs create a fiercely direct, intimate and unpolished lo-fi beauty. 'Après coup' then is self-reflective, open and inclusive with Torres allowing herself to be fully seen. An album to be felt at close distance with unrivalled authenticity. Born in 1952 in Dabola, Guinea, Ousmane was heir to the tradition of the Griots, the storytellers, poets and musicians who had served for centuries as the guardians of West African cultural heritage. He picked up the guitar and balafon in his early years and formed a youth band in his teens, but it was while studying agriculture at Kankan University that he decided to devote his life to music.
He moved to Bamako where he soon fell in with Mory Kanté and Les Ambassadeurs du Motel de Bamako, who were busy forging a modern Mandingue sound. He performed occasionally with the band and, when they finally broke up in 1977, he was asked to join guitarist Kanté Manfila and singer Salif Keita in a new venture. The newly-formed Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux relocated to Abidjan, where they came to the attention of legendary Beninese producer Badmos. Their electrifying first album, released in 1978, made them stars throughout West Africa.
After a few years of touring, Ousmane decided to focus on his own compositions and went to the esteemed JBZ Recording Studio in Abidjan. Accompanied by his fellow musicians from Les Ambassadeurs, Ousmane recorded “Kefimba” – named after the all-black bull from his childhood with whom he had shared his Manioc meals – and “N’Ny”; both were released initially on cassette before making their way to vinyl in 1982 and 1983.
Ousmane left Les Ambassadeurs shortly before their split in the mid-1980s, but he continued to work with Salif Keita, serving as his guitarist for more than three decades. After bringing their music to audiences throughout the world, the two friends eventually settled in France – for Ousmane it was the fulfilment of a lifelong aspiration.

Now the album takes an unexpected twist in the form of “The Harp of Boom” which at first glance appears to be a classic-sounding Boom-Bap banger. Yes, It’s loud, raw, and gritty, yet it gradually evolves into something delicately-touching and deeply-soulful thanks to a memorable flute melody and lush string arrangement. Definitely recorded with tongue in cheek.
Next is “Feel The Moment” a remarkable collaboration with one of the most recognisable and distinctive Russian artists, singer, trumpeter and cultural icon Antoha MC. It’s a feel-good song, hopeful, life-affirming and bittersweet. A stylish excursion into Brit-Funk and Soviet Jazz-Fusion sound, drawing inspiration from the likes of Atmosfear, Light Of The World or Soviet Jazz bands like Allegro and Arsenal, but reimagining the influences through the modern West London broken beat lens.
