Global pointing Brazilian jazz trio releases their new album Agôra, that sparkles with electric funk and Herbie-esque eclecticism. It features a myriad of guest vocalists and musicians including Brazilians Xênia França and Zé Leônidas, Jembaa Groove's Ghanaian singer Eric Owusu and South African artists Bongani Givethanks & Mpho Nkuzo Re-wiring the concept of 'fusion' for 2023, Agôra is Brazilian trio Caixa Cubo's resurgent new record with the title referring to 'now', based upon the intuitive and fluid nature of the trio's method, and this inspired recording. With shoots to black music culture, from Brazil to Brooklyn, Ghana and South Africa, Agôra is the group's ninth album yet is their first where they've invited guests, mainly singers, onto each track and follows their last, Angela from 2020, released on Heavenly Records, which won a BBC 6 Music Album of the Year (Huey Morgan's selection) granting them much deserved international recognition.

This colorful debut-album draws a blueprint of an urban ambient club record of a parallel universe. A collage of beautifully improvised pieces, strictly recorded in "one takes". A gripping fusion that brings together the warm analog textures of classic vintage synthesizers and electronic urban ambiences. Trying to appreciate the recent times of silence and deceleration, Daniel Helmer aka ifsonever has quickly developed a tonal language as a solo artist. With a non-compromising approach he would visit his studio, a cozy garden shed, to record one new track a day in strictly analog fashion as "one takes". His aim for this project was to capture the innocence and instinctive creative energy of the present moment. These 9 timeless pieces invite the listener to explore hypnotic and meditative atmospheres such as on the opener "transpose" or on "jonesy dreams of birds", as well as gloomy and almost mystical sounding tracks such as "total global" or "an unexpected error has occurred". ifsonever is a wonderful amalgamation of organic, laid-back sounds and electronic, club oriented elements. 2020 sees Jazz & Milk celebrating its 15th anniversary! Since 2005 the label, founded by Dusty, offers an experimental playground for international artists that share a passion for organic and soulful dance music. Many legendary club nights and over 30 releases later, Jazz & Milk has become a household name amongst the eclectic music imprints. The dreamteam of the highly successful first installment (JAMS001) teamed up again to share their love for raw and sample-based house music tunes produced on the MPC. Label artist Sam Irl and the man behind Jazz & Milk, Dusty never fail when it comes to layering colorful sample fragments and enriching them with raw beats and deep synthesizer chords.
"Broken Spell" starts off with a super moody atmosphere that slowly opens up until it reaches its energetic peak with bright synth stabs and a smooth bassline before colorful arpeggios are drifting the track into other spheres. "Love Prelude" has a rather dreamy vibe but its deep chord progressions and rough bass drums and claps create a truly unique contrast and a hypnotic atmosphere on top of it, while a later incoming bouncy bassline and dubby sample parts eventually pull you in cosmic dimensions!

Yet another solid gold modern reimagining of the mighty Loleatta Holloway, this time her infamous 1977 smash 'Hit & Run' goes under the knife and is tweaked to devastating effect by 2 of Chicago's finest modern day editors - Jamie 326 & Cratebug. Having edited and remixed numerous cuts in their own original ways, they take this all-time Salsoul classic and strip it right back to the essence, to the very basics, and in the process create a total dancefloor weapon. Well. Where do we start with 'Deep Inside'? Originally released in the golden NYC House era of 1993, this 5 tracker literally smashed everything in sight. And still does now! The epitome of an evergreen, all-time classic release. Masters At Work Louie Vega and Kenny Dope were on a major roll in this era, producing, remixing, dj-ing and everything in-between, these guys put in ridiculous work. They are joined on this EP by a roll-call of names and collaborators, Erick Morillo engineering the title track? Check. Maurice Joshua on co-production duties? You got it. Vocals by Ms. Barbara tucker? They're there. Killer, rock hard drums? Stacks of Soul? Masterfully chopped up Disco samples? All present. Serious stuff. Sometimes a record just manages to capture and distill the true essence of what this is all about and 'Deep Inside' is one such record, it bears all the hallmarks of golden era MAW, all the signposts of what was happening in NYC's clubs in the early to mid 90's were there within it's grooves. You know a record is good when it's still being, quite literally, hammered nearly 25 years later! Now, remastered, and reissued with the full involvement of Strictly Rhythm this seminal piece of NYC House history is made available again with all original, full sleeve artwork intact as per the 1993 original. The brand new WEST GRAND label has been set up to lovingly mine the tape vaults of Motown. And their debut single - under licence from Universal/ Motown - is simply superlative. It’s hard to imagine a better flrst release than MARVIN GAYE & TAMMI TERRELL’S much demand TEARS AT THE END OF A LOVE AFFAIR. Up until now the track has only been available via a limited download some years ago done by Universal to retain the right to the copyright in the master recording. It has eluded compilers of Motown CD compilation albums, and this is its’ worldwide debut release on vinyl. Tammi Terrell originally recorded her much loved solo version which was released on her only album. It became a must have for Motown and Northern Soul aficionados and the emergence of the duet with Marvin caused consternation. Nobody knew if it’s’ existence! It was even better than Tammi’s solo!! IT’S MARVIN GAYE AND TAMMI TERRELL!!! Why it did was not released when recorded is a question only Motown’s famed Quality Control department can answer. They certainly slipped up. Worldwide interest from the Soul community in this track is huge and the single is guaranteed to be an instant prized collectors item. The flip by Marvin Gaye and Kim Weston was unreleased for decades and is very much a “lost and found” gem. Normally it would be good enough to make it as an A side but the mighty “Tears At The End Of A Love Affair” inevitably claims that honour.

The Legion of Boogie Down return for their second album inventively titled Powerdance II. It’s been 8 years since the critically acclaimed “The Lost Art of Getting Down,” was heralded by the Guardian of one of the albums of the year. This time the band of misfits add additional wonk to their future vision of music for night clubs and basements. During the 35 years of making music, Dave Lee has constantly been searching for new singers and writers to work with. A search that’s ended up with many fantastic collaborations and releases with the likes of Thelma Houston, Taka Boom, Dianne Charlemagne and Seal. More recently this quest led him to Maurissa Rose and the creation of their album ‘London / Detroit’. After hearing Maurissa's voice on a Theo Parrish record Dave reached out to her and after a few long phone conversations and mp3 swaps they both agreed a visit to London would be much more fun than trying to work together remotely. Maurissa made the journey from her home in Detroit to write and record an album with Dave at his studio in March 2022 - as they both feel that creating music together in the same room is always better. The fruits of their labour yielded 11 brand new songs (and 1 cover) tapping into their collective love of Soul, Disco and R&B, with a sprinkle of Soulful House. This album is a special one for Dave Lee as it’s the first time in his career he’s recorded an entire album with same singer on every track. In the album’s liner notes Dave talks of how Maurissa is a naturally creative person, full of ideas, warm & unpretentious which is reflected in her vocal performances throughout ‘London / Detroit’. Dave’s expertly crafted music is backed up with a deeply passionate yet effortless delivery from the Detroiter, a marker of someone who has honed and perfected their art. When it comes to the music side of this LP, Dave Lee is once again proving he’s still at the top of his game and shows no sign of relenting. Drawing from his encyclopaedic knowledge of all things Soul/Funk/Disco, we are treated to a range of styles, BPMs and influences from 95bpm street soul to more uptempo disco and boogie flavours. Be it the rippling synth voyage opener of ‘You Decide’, taking the Johnnie Taylor classic ‘What About My Love’ into a modern Boogie realm, upping the tempo on the soulful houser ‘I Feel the Sun” or bringing the tempo back down to the bassy acidic chug of ‘You’re Giving Me Life’. Mr Lee is truly adept at creating a modern disco soul sound without the usage of samples. London and Detroit might be two very different cities on opposite sides of the Atlantic but this album is proof that creative synergy knows no distance.

Every once in a while a record comes along which is a little bit special, a record which stands the test of time, bringing the same reaction to the dancefloor now as it did all those years ago, and ‘Don’t You Want My Love’ is one of those records. Almost four decades after its original release in 1979, the record has become a favourite with the Glitterbox crowds, creating a seminal moment at Ministry of Sound when David Morales dropped it at the party in March 2017. Now Debbie Jacob’s timeless classic lands on Glitterbox Recordings for a special vinyl package including a re-edit courtesy of disco veteran Dimitri From Paris. The spirit of disco lives on.

West Grand has been set up to mine the Motown tape vaults.Their second release - under licence from Universal / Motown - captures two previously unreleased mixes of a classic. Brenda Holloway’s “Think It Over (Before You Break My Heart)” was recorded in the 1960’s - the same decade she was selected by The Beatles to open their last ever live show - but not issued by Motown in that decade. It took until the 1990's for an acetate copy to turn up and start getting plays on the UK Northern Soul circuit. It became clear what a very special recording had been ignored. As befits the strange world of Northern Soul a lack of info on the much prized acetate meant the track was credited as “Reconsider” - the phrase Brenda uses mostly during her magnificent vocal virtuoso performance - which turned out to be incorrect. Nevertheless bootlegs were produced as “Reconsider” and it took a while before the correct info to emerge. Legimate copies have since been released and slowly but surely this gem of a Soul record that firstly nobody knew about and then got given the wrong name has become an iconic Northern Soul and Motown anthem. Demand has proved insatiable and West Grand add to the mystique by coming up with two previously unknown mixes releases for the first time ever worldwdide. the a side vocal highlights Brenda’s vocals as even more breathtaking than everyone first thought, while the fip shows just how amazing Earl Van Dyke and pals - Motown’s legendary Funk Brothers - really were.
