Kléo s second release Acid Coolada’ is a meticulous blend of deep, groove-heavy acid house elements with a spontaneous flair and live instrumentation, striking the perfect balance of fiery heat and warm groove.

2023 saw the birth of Kléo’s label Call 4 Rhythm, brought into the world with her much-lauded debut EP 'Agogo'. Now, exactly a year later, hotlines have opened once again as the next call for rhythm is upon us. ‘Acid Coolada’ retains Kléo's direct and honest attitude, but this second offering also unveils a bold new live approach. Carefully layering compelling house elements with live keys by Dion Groebe the two tracks diverge into vigorous, alternative directions like contrasting sides of the same coin. The result is another essential offering for discerning dancers, ready to be put on speed dial.

Opener ‘Acid Coolada’ starts off unapologetically and pulls us straight to the dancefloor. In case you were wondering whether the title is referring to a brisk after sun ritual or a spicy party cocktail, it’s definitely the latter. Located somewhere in the middle of a jackin’ pit we’re greeted with acid house, jazzy progressions and unmistakable live twists and turns. Be prepared to get stuck—though in the best way, as Dion Groebe guides us with a reckless Rhodes solo in full live mode throughout the whole track. The frenzy swallows you up in a relentless, euphoric ride that seems to have no end, and perhaps no begining— being present is what matters most here.

The flip side takes a trippy turn, ascending to a moodier realm of the galaxy. With ‘Sand Waves’ Kléo reveals a deeper side of herself. The jackin’ touch is undeniably there, but this side lifts off more gently, slowly immersing into a spacey synth journey, highlighted by Groebe’s playful live keys wandering like a lizard eagerly exploring a rocky surface. As ‘Sand Waves’ unfolds into another dance floor igniter, the blazing heat of 'Acid Coolada' cools down beneath a sweeping breeze reminding us that we’re getting that ‘feel good’ after-sun ritual after all. Over the summer of 2024 Adam F has been releasing a series of reboots on 181 Recordings - the label founded with vocalist and partner Kirsty Hawkshaw. As a precursor to his forthcoming album he follows up 'Brand New Funk Revisited Reboots' and 'Music In My Mind Revisited / Reboots' with painstakingly re-recorded and rebooted versions of his seminal track 'Circles', with a Reboot by Adam F, as well as the first official release of the Pola & Bryson & Adam F reboot - which has been causing a storm on DnB dancefloors worldwide.

"'Circles' is one of the first tracks where I could express my influences with no boundaries. The music became known as Drum n' Bass but started off as hard core Rave and Jungle. One of the greatest things about it for me was that I could express myself through that medium using all my influences; funk, soul, reggae and jazz - freely and unrestricted." says Adam F on the release.

"Circles has evolved over time with very solid and rich roots. Behind the hooks, basslines and such there are great textures. Saxophone, trumpet, Keyboards and synthesisers contributing to a free flowing arrangement drawing on my love of jazz musicians indulging my own personal imaginative dreamscape of sound. Ultimately I want it to be crafted into something of a listener's story and journey that people can hang their hats on as well as their hearts."

You’re NEXUS 21, central to the dizzy zeitgeist of the 1991 adrenaline rammed UK House Music juggernaut, and you have just recorded a masterpiece of an album MIND MACHINES. DON’T DO IT LIKE THAT - somehow even though your record label love the album it does not get released. DO IT LIKE THIS - it finally gets issued now. When Mark Archer and Chris Peat flew back from a seminal recording session at Kevin Saunderson’s KMS Studio in Detroit there was a palpable feel of excitement. Instead of merely paying homage to their Techno forerunners, they were now creating their own just as innovative waveforms. In the can was a gem - DON’T DO IT LIKE THIS, DO IT LIKE THAT. Motor City songstress Donna Black had unconsciously seemed to add Ma to the start of her name and her recorded in the dark vocals helped conjure up an almost Madonna and a drum machine meets Techno hybrid. This it was agreed could be a huge breakthrough single which - preceded by strategically released set up tracks - would build up Nexus 21’s surely inevitable rise to glory. And the release of the MIND MACHINES album. But it never happened. Instead one day Mark and Chris burst into Network’s Birmingham office excitedly brandishing no less than 8 new recordings infused with a propulsive Rave energy flash compared to their more cerebral Nexus 21 work. The label agreed that the new tracks should be released under a new artist name and an initial suggestion. Alien 8 replaced by Altern 8. What was planned as temporary dalliance became a long term relationship. You all know the score - Altern 8 became surf riders supreme on the rave tsunami, not just music makers but myth creators. The plan has been to run Nexus 21 and Altern 8 parallel, a kind of schizophrenic experiment by two men, a drum machine and a mad for it record company. History shows that Altern 8 became too DOMIN 8 and the lovingly recorded Nexus 21 album was left on the proverbial shelf (actually a box in Birmingham) So now MIND MACHINES finally meets the World. First thing that screams out that it hasn’t half aged well. Obviously it is a wet dream for the anoraks of electronica, that goes without saying. But above and beyond the history lesson of how 2 young UK techno mad kids got the dots from Detroit and deconstructed them to create something very British the music they created, sometimes naive but frequently knowledgeable, sounds .. well just great. The four Detroit recordings - NEXODUS, TOGETHER, DON’T DO IT LIKE THAT, DO IT LIKE THIS and EVERYTHING (NO STATUES) - variously feature contributions from Motor City luminaries Marc Kinchen and Anthony Shakir. Only two of the twelve recordings were properly released in 1990/1991 with two more making it on a withdrawn white label 12 inch at the time. Three of the tracks, including a live recording at London’s Brain Club that has been retrieved from a DAT that was thought to have disappeared, are previously unreleased. And as well as two previously unreleased much altered versions of Nexus 21 gems there is the legendary much tougher mix of the duo’s signature techno treasure Self Hypnosis. More

Is anyone in France keyed into the sound of UK funky as sharply as Kaval? Sneaker sets out a strong case with this four-tracker of cool and deadly shufflers which take that insistent groove and give it a different lick.

Kaval has got plenty going on in Toulouse, where he’s riding the online airwaves with the Egregore Collective and got his name all over the Riddim Supplies series 12”s. Those with their sticky fingers on all the best bits of wax the past few years might have stumbled across those records in the racks. Elsewhere, he’s also locked in with the Ruff Club crew who are bringing the DIY free party vibe to Toulouse under railway lines, in abandoned buildings and anywhere they can sneak a genny, a system, some lights and a vibe. All this is to say Kaval is the real deal, doing things the proper way, and it shows in his tunes.

The cuts on this record are absolutely built for the dance, functional like a DJ record should be but not at the expense of the flair. ‘Combo II’ has fun slipping snatches of MCs around utopian synth licks, while ‘Pistolaser’ is spilling over with crafty micro edits and snappy samples that bring the limber groove to life. The crooked beat and rounded square wave bass is a given, and Kaval wields the rhythm section with poise, but it’s the playful energy he brings to the top end which really lifts his gear. It’s no wonder his tracks have been bumped by the likes of Nick Léon, perfectly bridging the gap from funky into the deft Latin-tinged zones explored by the Miami heavyweight.

It’s records like this that prove exploration of UK funky, like so many club genres, has so much more to give to the dance. More

Staying true to the original ideology of his imprint, SP:MC once again aims to fuse & contort his influences from the Drum & Bass & Dubstep scenes into the 2-step / UKG framework. The A side ‘XL Bully’ is definitely the more up front & hard hitting of the two tracks - drawing inspiration from the palette of Digital & Spirit, Total Science & Rufige Kru’s previous works. The flipside ‘Core Memories’ is a deeper cut leaning towards a more Detroit feel - you can undoubtably hear a nod to the late great Marcus Intalex & ST Files here.
