Booting off on a massive remix tip as the veteran producer reinterprets Mike Parker & Aric Rist’s Trybet project, but trust him to allow for a moment of dancefloor introspection. It’s prime early morning gear in a rousing juxtaposition of beatific string harmony and tough-as-nails deepness. Triumphant ‘window shutters open in the club at 5 AM’-type shit.
The other two are quintessential Edward: impressionistic, widescreen odysseys across lysergic terrain, but groove-forward where it counts. A pair of head-spinning explorations intended for the dancefloor, flush with shadowy flex, insectoid detail and tripped-out flourishes while keeping it funked-out in the tradition of Detroit.
The ‘Deep Sea Villain EP’ plumbs the depths of smudged abstraction, and as we’ve come to expect from Edward, it’s big on hallucinatory detail. It all oozes the multi-layered surrealism that typifies his best work. Proper transcendent biz.

Forged in the fertile acid house scene of the late 80s, A Trifle Too Far comprises childhood friends Simon Ward and Tony Grimley from Hornchurch, on London's outer fringes in Essex. Their insatiable thirst for seeking out new sounds led them to countless shindigs, parties and raves, eventually inspiring them to craft their own music based on their adventures on the dancefloor. Their studio collaboration culminated in the creation of the remarkable record you currently hold in your hands: 'Catch Your Ear / Meringueatang'. This two-track release, recorded in 1992, offers forward-thinking and fresh prog-house cuts, as rare as hen's teeth and as exhilarating as they were upon their original release over three decades ago. Catch Your Ear was expertly engineered by Evren Omer, boss of Essex-based techno bunker Strategy Records, while Meringueatang was helmed by Matt Clayden, one half of M&M and Acorn Arts and the proprietor of X-Gate Records, another stalwart in Essex's underground dance scene. 'Catch Your Ear / Meringueatang' remains the only musical collaboration between the duo. When Mint Condition approached them to reissue this highly sought-after EP, both Simon and Tony were surprised and delighted in equal measure by the proposition. Now, a few months down the line, we find ourselves with yet another top-tier addition to the MC reissue catalogue, fully licensed from the artists, mastered and cut by Keith Tenniswood at Curve Pusher, and available once again for purchase. Now we move from theshoreline to the ocean shelf, led on an underwater adventure by young Parisian Shelter. Where previousreleases have seen the synth-obsessed Frenchman take his inspiration from Caribbean rhythms orBalearic attitudes, this marine missive sees Shelter turn to the lavish world of the library, creating his analternate score to Jean Faurez’ 1960 documentary short.More submersible than snorkel, our journey begins in the very dark of the deep, mystical harp trillsechoing through the inky blackness, picking up the bioluminescent shimmer of an Abraliopsis Squid.Gradually we make our way into the light, cruising past shoals of silver scales and underwater forests.‚Immersion’ offers a placid, percolating rhythm and billowing pads, providing sonic symmetry for thedancing leaves, while the spheric soundscape of ‘La Vie A L’Ombre’ bubbles away like an underwatervolcano. The optimistic ambience of ‘Plenitude Azotee’, brimming with delicate melody and glisteningsequences, perfectly captures the wide-eyed wonder of a reef dive, before drifting into the serenity of‘Parade’, an aquatic acquaintance of A.R.T. Wilson’s ‘Overworld’. Last time we heard from the Growing Bin, Basso was sat at the water‘s edge, trousers rolled up, toes inthe tide, savouring a Falanghina while Eleventeen Eston went with the wave. Now we move from theshoreline to the ocean shelf, led on an underwater adventure by young Parisian Shelter. Where previousreleases have seen the synth-obsessed Frenchman take his inspiration from Caribbean rhythms orBalearic attitudes, this marine missive sees Shelter turn to the lavish world of the library, creating his analternate score to Jean Faurez’ 1960 documentary short.More submersible than snorkel, our journey begins in the very dark of the deep, mystical harp trillsechoing through the inky blackness, picking up the bioluminescent shimmer of an Abraliopsis Squid.Gradually we make our way into the light, cruising past shoals of silver scales and underwater forests.‚Immersion’ offers a placid, percolating rhythm and billowing pads, providing sonic symmetry for thedancing leaves, while the spheric soundscape of ‘La Vie A L’Ombre’ bubbles away like an underwatervolcano. The optimistic ambience of ‘Plenitude Azotee’, brimming with delicate melody and glisteningsequences, perfectly captures the wide-eyed wonder of a reef dive, before drifting into the serenity of‘Parade’, an aquatic acquaintance of A.R.T. Wilson’s ‘Overworld’. The compilation features 8 tracks handpicked by Rødhåd, each characterized by a vigorous commitment to the dancefloor while staying true to the label's signature - hard-to-resist sound with a pinch of mystery.
While every contribution has its distinct magnetic pull, marking the way to a nascent world, the crimson red thread running through this compilation is perpetuating, swirling techno with an acute fit for the dancefloor. As with previous releases Rødhåd crafted the artwork for the compilation, this time drenched in crimson hues echoing the energy of the music.

Is anyone in France keyed into the sound of UK funky as sharply as Kaval? Sneaker sets out a strong case with this four-tracker of cool and deadly shufflers which take that insistent groove and give it a different lick.
Kaval has got plenty going on in Toulouse, where he’s riding the online airwaves with the Egregore Collective and got his name all over the Riddim Supplies series 12”s. Those with their sticky fingers on all the best bits of wax the past few years might have stumbled across those records in the racks. Elsewhere, he’s also locked in with the Ruff Club crew who are bringing the DIY free party vibe to Toulouse under railway lines, in abandoned buildings and anywhere they can sneak a genny, a system, some lights and a vibe. All this is to say Kaval is the real deal, doing things the proper way, and it shows in his tunes.
The cuts on this record are absolutely built for the dance, functional like a DJ record should be but not at the expense of the flair. ‘Combo II’ has fun slipping snatches of MCs around utopian synth licks, while ‘Pistolaser’ is spilling over with crafty micro edits and snappy samples that bring the limber groove to life. The crooked beat and rounded square wave bass is a given, and Kaval wields the rhythm section with poise, but it’s the playful energy he brings to the top end which really lifts his gear. It’s no wonder his tracks have been bumped by the likes of Nick Léon, perfectly bridging the gap from funky into the deft Latin-tinged zones explored by the Miami heavyweight.
It’s records like this that prove exploration of UK funky, like so many club genres, has so much more to give to the dance.
