Canadian artist Jay Tripwire delivers his new three-track EP ‘Gone Insane’ via Jamie Clarke’s Either imprint this February. Vancouver, Canada’s Jay Tripwire has long been a beloved producer in the world of stripped back house and techno with releases dating back to the turn of the millennium on the likes of Steve Bug’s Pokerflat, D’Julz’ Bass Culture, Roger Gerressen’s Irenic and of course his own Witching Hour among many others. Here though, we see him joining the roster of Irish artist Jamie Clarke’s Either imprint which has played host to numerous releases from the label boss himself and featured remixes from Silverlining, Ryan Crosson, Barac and more. Title track ‘Gone Insane’ opens the release and perfectly sets the tone with Tripwire’s signature murky atmospheric style, crisp driving rhythm, gritty bass and intricately programmed effects. ‘Workhorse’ follows next and diverges into haunting minimal realms with swirling synth textures, glitched out bass flutters and crunchy low-slung drums. ‘Still A Raver’ then rounds out the EP, shifting things back up a gear with bouncy, twitchy synth melodies, twisted vocal murmurs and pulsating subs all underpinned by heavily shuffled, raw percussion.

Where the dystopian aqua-tronics of previous Drexciya were often jet-black, cold, brittle and abrasive this is a yearning soul music, played out down rain soaked streets, the buzzing lights of industry flickering in the darkness, the warm blue of a new day ready to break. This is a record where techno reached its raw, most emotive peak... Sustained pads paint minor-key melodies while electroid-vocals are buried deep in the hydrothermal mass of squelching bass-clusters and funky-filtered bleeps. At its skittering percussion core, a stripped back 808 tapestry, sequenced into myriad jazz-inflected shapes, a pulsing kick drum the snapping heartbeat, ticking hi-hats bursting from every angle.
All this tingles with the ghosts of records past, of Kraftwerkian humanoids, of first-wave Detroit, of refracted Hancock and Ayres, but as Stinson intones on the fifth track, ‘let me be what I wanna be’, Lifestyles is a creation all of its own special making, a sound that would inspire the latter day deep-house machinations of Omar S, Jus-Ed, Moodymann and influence –however indirectly- a wealth of current UK/US bass operators including Actress and Kyle Hall. Clone Classic Cuts continues to dig in the crates to bring back forgotten or obscure records from the past! This is 3 tracks by Da Posse (produced by Hula... one of the Outthere Brothers... and with Maurice Joshua, K Fingers & Martell). Strings & Its My Life are Chicago's take on Detroit techno... a rare release that sounds like a early Derrick May record (think 'The Dance') but maybe slightly more straight forward (as one might expect from Chicago). A rare piece in house and techno history since this is one of the rare examples of a record that doesn't show the clear difference between Chicago and Detroit in the late 80's. This record most likely got produced within 1 year after Rhythm = Rhythms legendary Nude Photo and Strings of Life releases (both '87 and this came out in '88). As extra bonus track we have The Groove. A phat bass driven chicago acid track that still rocks it. Another fine piece of powerful dance music history back in the spot light!

For his next trick, Danny Krivit serves up a fitting musical tribute to what he refers to as "the royal family of soul" aka The Jacksons. This double A-side brings two classics to 7" for the first time having been pulled from the golden era of 90s house. Both original Michael and Janet remixes have long been staples in Krivit's sets and here he refines E-Smoove's Late Nite remix of 'Remember The Time' into a mix-friendly gem that keeps the essence and bumps up the beats. On the flip, Janet's 'Any Time, Any Place' appears as the beloved D&D remix, which is uplifting, funky and timeless.
