Seth Troxler’s Slacker 85 imprint prepares to expand its repertoire of ne’er do wells and inspired outsiders, with two new singles shining a flashlight on talent at the characteristically esoteric producers on the fringes of Troxler’s always increasing circles. American-Ecuadorian sound engineer and musician Andre Salmon has already left his fingerprints on underground dance music’s global scene, developing the current iteration of Inner City with Kevin Saunderson, as well as collaborating with house icons Paul Johnson and K’Alexi Shelby. Having already made a fixture of his supremely effective ‘Heartless’ mashup of Saint Etienne’s classic ‘Only Love Can Break Your Heart’, Slacker now welcomes Salmon to the family to exercise his studio technique and ‘sacred resonance’ deepness. The result is ‘La Mano de Dios’, a voluminous dance on the edge of house and techno, as smooth and impressive as the jets descending above the Terrace at DC10. From Detroit to the East Coast, TB-203 delivers a contrasting energy on ‘Movin’. A fresh alias of NYC DJ, producer & label owner Tommy Bones, this bubbling, raw acid workout finds fresh heat at the intersection of jackin’ hip house and latin freestyle, driven by loose and lively vocals from DannyP. Underscoring Slacker 85’s commitment to party over posture, ‘Movin’ has been tried and tested to deliver on its old-school promise.

Emerging producer Très Mortimer dishes out eight huge heaters on the highly-anticipated ‘M1 City’ release, a dedication to the mighty Korg M1, coming to Seth Troxler’s Slacker 85 on 25th October. Kicking off ‘M1 City’ is the simplistic, but refined and booth-rattling ‘Work That Body’. A crisp M1 stab is the main character in this, amplified by thunderous and high energy drums. Then there’s ‘Secrets’, a house jam inspired by the likes of MK that utilises TR-909 drums, a subtle rolling bassline, intimately whispered and soulfully sung vocal shots, and, of course, classic Korg M1 synth stabs. Together with dramatic contemporary builds, a highly danceable house smasher is formed. ‘No More’ is pure gasoline for the dancefloor. Très pairs another barrage of clean M1 stabs with a rousing vocal sample that leads into, with the help of a rolling snare, another highly effective house drop. Following the extremely saucy ‘Big Daddy’ skit, we’re dropped straight into ‘One Of Those Nights’, a show-stopping track complete with cutting, sharp stabs, a bulging bassy synth and a West Coast-esque synth sound. ‘Bitch I’m From Chicago’ feat. Gleebz is, as the title suggests, a dedication to the city where house music found its name. Batting off all the poser cities like LA and Miami in the sassy lyrics, it embodies the spirit of Chicago with hefty kick drums and weighty chord stabs. At the tail end of the release, ‘Let Me Go’ and ‘Love’ (featuring vocalist 7000 (7K)), bring things to a rousing emotive close. Both tracks see Très put clean vocals over piano riffs, giving off differing moods – the former is euphoric, the latter melancholic. Synths bubble beneath, and each track funnels their own respective house grooves, resulting in two tracks fit for both the dancefloor and headphones.

Dennis Cruz delivers the landmark 300th release on Damian Lazarus’ iconic Crosstown Rebels imprint with ‘The Snake Charmer’ EP, featuring collaborations with Ian Ludvig and the label boss himself. An artist at the height of his powers, arriving o? the back of his busiest Ibiza season to date, it’s safe to say that Dennis Cruz is a man in extremely high demand within the global electronic landscape. Accomplished UK mainstay J1Mi launches the long awaited Beyonders label with a fantastic first EP that captures the eclectic nature of his sound. J1mi aka James Hadfield has been making all manner of sounds for years - both solo and as one half of Lizards - from house to disco, Balearic to techno, and always on revered labels like MeMeMe, Not An Animal, Leng, Futureboogie and Phonica. He is part of the Beyonders collective that was started by Jason and Mark Goodings of 90’s pioneering breaks and drum and bass duo Hidden Agenda. The collective is now back after a hiatus following Mark's tragic passing in 2016 and is as fruitful as ever with members including James as well as Mal Sharp and Nick Grimes and now a new label.The brilliant 'Sixes Now' has a menacing synth screwing about the mix before percussive grooves and elastic bass arrive to lock you into a dark disco groove full of menace and suspense. The thumping 'Modern Maze' is another hugely inventive sound with rickety rhythms, erotic vocal coos and wiry synths. A bewitching breakdown brings acoustic guitars and places the vocal front and centre before the punchy house kicks come back once more. 'Desire' featuring Crazy P vocalist Danielle Moore is an indie disco cut with jazzy chords and playful funk riffs that lift the spirits and cruise on smooth grooves. Closer 'Japanese Kipling' is a prickly brew with off-grid hots and vocal sounds, distant hits of melody and dubby rhythms that are wonderfully intoxicating. Anané’s Take A Ride EP was produced by Two Soul Fusion, aka Louie Vega and Josh Milan, all with live string arrangements courtesy of the Apple Hill String Quartet and conducted by Leroy Burgess. The recording dives from the effortless heights of Punk Disco (Let Me Be Your Fantasy, High) into the swirling eddies of Jazz Funk (Coffy Is The Color) before climbing back out into the languorous arms of Italo-Disco (Tutto Previsto). Strings across the production were The EP is held together in its entirety by the dreamy, sumptuous vocal of its creator Anané, who considers her top line one vital part of the instrumental whole. “I am art,” Anané reflects carefully, “for I am the music as much as I am the singer. Creation means to crawl into the unseen of my own dreams and becoming the beast of my vision, singing to the world as I go by.”

Unstoppable Chicago house tour de force Boo Williams has one of the most recognisable sounds in the scene but always manages to say new things with it. This time out he takes care of a 50th release on the Boo Moonman label. It kicks off with some tech-leaning grooves that swing back and forth underneath cosmic pad work. 'Limited Time' is a more percussive and laid-back vibe, with deep house chords and jazzy feelings. 'Emergency Teck' then comes in two further versions - one acid one, and one beat tool for layering up your sets. It makes for another timeless outing from this vital house voice.

The latest release from "Matasuna Records" is the result of a transatlantic connection between the USA and Germany, whose common denominator is the love for Brazilian music. The journey started 17 years ago when the German musical duo "Dubben" got in touch with the late American musician "Victor Meshkovsky". Almost two decades later, the Dubben interpretations of two songs that he once released with his band "Made in Brasil" on his own "Nucleus" label are now available! The second Dubben 7-inch on Matasuna features their great versions of the songs "Grilos Cantam Para Anamaria" and "One Two-Two" with a captivating vocal contribution by singer "María del Rosario". The 7-inch includes an inlay with detailed liner notes by Dubben about the background of this release. When Victor heard about Dubben's intention to reinterpret his version of the "Marcos Valle" classic Grilos Cantam Para Anamaria, he immediately loved the idea. This version is raw and funky, according to the original plan, with "Christina Joy's" original vocals isolated from the 1975 album. Bassist "MC Scholze" lifts the down-to-earth chord changes up into souljazz territories, while the typical ingredients of the Dubben sound – brass and percussion feeding tape delays and spring reverb chambers – happily groove along. Originally a psyched-out proggy-ish Brasil track, Dubben takes Victor's composition "One Two-Two", puts it in a box and sends it to Colombia. Of course, the parcel gets stuck on its way, much to the delight of the audience. A slow Cumbia burner with 100% organic ingredients: straight bass drum, fender bass, springy guitars, a detuned Italian organ and tons of improvised percussion, performed and recorded by the band themselves. Finally, "María del Rosario's" vocal contribution, in both English and Spanish, is more than just the icing on the cake - it's the Latin soul of the track. ¡Un dos-dos!
