Stefan Vincent - Yonghegong Lama Temple Exit F (Priori Remix)
Limited 12'' edition transparent crystal vinyl (150 copies) in a PVC sleeve with inner printed artwork.
Melancholy, the feeling, is often associated with darkness and deep depression. For
Dutch artist Stefan Vincent, within the experience of melancholy there’s beauty to be
found. “Decay and loneliness can serve a purpose. Depression can teach you things.
To feel deep sadness also means the ability to feel profound emotions.” he says.
For his debut on MUSAR Recordings, “Pre Melancholy” EP, Vincent channels these
notions of Melancholy into three tracks that draw on darker moods but also reflect
beauty in their intricacy and the atmospheres they create. This EP acts as a
precursor to his forthcoming album on MUSAR, “Post Melancholy” which is due in
September.
“Mono No Aware” and “Yonghegong Lama Temple Exit F” are both taken from the LP,
placed side by side with “Agent of Distraction”, an exclusive track from Vincent for
this EP only. We’re also pleased to have Montreal-based musician Priori on the remix
of “Yonghegong...”. His rework draws further emotion from that of Vincent’s by
slowing the pace and bringing delicate melodies to the forefront; it’s one for
introspection.

Stefan Vincent - 8AM On The Train To Work You Ask Me To Send You Something That Makes Me Happy (F
For Dutch artist Stefan Vincent, the feeling of melancholy also offers the opportunity for beauty to be found.
“Decay and loneliness can serve a purpose. Depression can teach you things. To feel deep sadness also means the ability to feel profound emotions.” he says. With this in mind, his debut album on MUSAR Recordings, “Post- Melancholy”, unpacks the twists and turns of grappling with this emotion, drawing from breaks, electro and IDM to make his most intricate work to date, after previous releases on Token, Dynamic Reflection, Symbolism, and Non-Series.
Throughout “Post-Melancholy” Vincent traces the wave of melancholy and how it moves through the body, which allows for lighter moments alongside darker moods. Perhaps the lightest track on the album is its acidic-breaks opener, “Eyes Unclouded”, with its soaring acid lines and dazzling synths, which acts as a false pretense for the rest of the album. Tracks like “Poise”, “Arpeggino” and the meditative “Yonghegong Lama Temple Exit F” also break up the intensity. However, nestled between the more pacey, bass-weighted tracks on the album, these lighter openings still feel like tear-jerkers.
The more common associations of melancholy show up on tracks like “Another Skin To Wear” and “You Know This Isn’t Going To End Well”, which all create a more ominous feel via IDM and the polyrhythmic structures of drum’n’bass. Particularly on “Another Skin To Wear”, which borrows its name from a Radiohead lyric, the track's swooping motion feels realistic to melancholy’s chaotic and often unpredictable path. But, like all great storytellers, Vincent leaves the most poignant moment of the album for last with the rolling “8AM on the Train… (For Maarten)” devoted to his dear friend, Maarten, who sadly passed away at the young age of 36.
This LP is dedicated to Maarten de Vries (1986-2022)

Stefan Vincent, - Conflate Four
We have got a stunning debut lined up for magical number 10. Amsterdam’s Stefan Vincent will release his first BALANS twelve by the end of April and we are really extremely excited to unleash these 4 gems into the world. Both Conflate Four and Five are about as trippy as it gets, reminding us of the golden 90’s era of psychedelic Detroit and Berlin techno. But with a distinct Dutch flavour off course, think Steve Rachmad under his Ignacio monniker. Washes of synth arps are getting all the room they need to breath, expand and contract thanks to the ultra minimalistic grooves of both tunes. Stefan showcases a different side of himself on ‘Fool Me Again’ and ‘Welder’. Two downtempo, electronic, ambient cuts. ‘Welder’ embraces futuristic synths and abstract, alienating sounddesign, while ‘Fool Me Again’ is Detroit melancholy at it’s best: try and not get goosebumps.

J.Wiltshire - Rush Point 9
J.Wiltshire returns to MUSAR with Sunflower At Day EP — a deep, atmospheric excursion across four tightly woven dance-floor tracks.
Marking MUSAR’s 20th release, this EP showcases some of Wiltshire’s most club- ready work yet, blending outsider house, ambient trance, and Cornish electronic influences.
The title track ‘Sunflower At Day’ is a shoegaze-infused chugger that nods to the ethereal haze of My Bloody Valentine and has a rave energy reminiscent of Future Sound of London. Track two, ‘Cosmic Slap’, takes over with its deep, dub- heavy sounds and off-kilter rhythms, playing to Wiltshire's more experimental side under a techno beat.
On the B side, we dive deeper into Wiltshire's intricate melodic world.
‘Traversing’ unfolds with enveloping, pastoral harmonic patterns, balancing surging intensity with an organic flow.
Finally, the EP closes with the cinematic ‘Rush Point 9’, a late-night noir groove that offers a perfect, reflective finale to this sonic journey.
With Sunflower At Day, Wiltshire fuses intricate textures and melodies with dance- floor intensity, offering another great soundscape from the artist for both club and home listeners.

Hoshina Anniversary - Usagi
Genre: House / Techno
In Japanese, the word “Guru-Guru” refers to the state of spinning, whirling.?
This state is captured in the work of Japanese artist Hoshina Anniversary, who makes his third appearance on MUSAR with his EP Guru Guru and marks the return of the label after an extended break.
Hoshina’s self-titled brand of ‘Watechno’ has appeared on well-loved dance music labels like ESP Institute, Volvox’s Jack Dept and Young Marco’s Safe Trip,
alongside MUSAR where he also appeared as Shifting Gears back in 2022; an electronic-jazz-centered moniker.
His Guru Guru EP captures the latest snapshot of Hoshina’s sound and sees him draw from Japanese language as a through-line.
The title track is the clearest representation of his ‘Watechno’, where he uses Japanese instrumentation on top of a menacing EBM-style march. The track's slowly whirling momentum is the “Guru-Guru”.
On tracks like “Banri”, which means far away in Japanese, we see new shades to Hoshina’s work as he mixes a Japanese Wadaiko drum groove with acidic elements and piano melodies to make a track of contradictions which pairs roughness with elegance. Whereas on “Usagi”, Japanese for rabbit, Hoshina fires up the BPM.
Piano melodies remain here but their effect is more drifting and emotive than on “Banri”.
“Kaga” is named after a place in the southernmost part of Ishikawa Prefecture, between Kanazawa City and Fukui City.
On this track, Hoshina’s love for jazz comes through and even mirrors the work we heard from him under Shifting Gears.

Ricardo Tobar - Mineral
Genre: House / Techno
We commence with a warm and bouncy UK acid house vibe. We conclude with a beguiling 'Boards of Canada' style electronic bubble bath. We're treated to an array of flavors and an outstanding S.O.N.S remix in between. It can only be MUSAR and another compelling collection from Ricardo Tobar.
With a discography that started on Border Community and includes the likes of Co-coon and ESP Institute as well as MUSAR, Chilean Ricardo's credentials speak for themselves.
His music does, too. Constantly playing with themes of displacement, disorientation and delight in his fusions, 'Our Violence' was inspired by the ongoing discussions of cultural appropriation. At its heaviest, on tracks like the Isolee-esque 'Our Vio-lence' and S.O.N.S's SYO rolling breakbeat remix of 'La Femme Aux Masques', we're thrust deep into the most hypnotic of dances. At its most esoteric and experi-mental, tracks like 'Mineral' and 'La Femme Aux Masques', we're taken to places we didn't even know existed. Places that refuse to accept current formulas or standards and take us outside the box - where MUSAR always loves to be.

3
J.Wiltshire - The Number Counters
4
J.Wiltshire - Trails
12’’ Transparent EP Vinyl (limited edition to 150 copies) with insert printed artwork.
Three deep excursions from the superb J.Wiltshire and a remix from Konx-om-
Pax to back them up.
UK-born, Berlin-based, J.Wiltshire (Hypercolour/Super Hexagon) returns to MUSAR for
a deep excursion with Planet Mu's Konx-om-Pax on remix duties.
The tracks came to fruition in Berlin during a time in society when everything was closed
and there was a huge layer of uncertainty across the globe. "I was channelling my
interest in the introspective side of trance and finding comfort in what I was creating. It
was sort of like going back to using processes from when I first started making dance
music."
With three original tracks on the EP, 'Luv 44' opens the EP with a pulsating boom-bap
groove and atmospheric synth work via acidic licks from the SH-101. 'The Number
Counters' boasts sporadic analogue delay with white-noise snare drums and haunting
ostinatos. 'Trails' is a welcoming, sluggish roller that chugs into oblivion, making for an
idyllic warm-up excerpt for the club.
On remix duties, special guest Konx-om-Pax is summoned to bring his own
interpretation of 'The Number Counters'. As an artist, you may recognise Konx-om-Pax’s
visuals for Warp, Mogwai, Underground Resistance, Oneohtrix Point Never, Hyperdub,
Advanced Beauty and LuckyMe. Oftentimes when turning his hand to production, the
Planet Mu signee develops the original elements and pushes them into new territory via
a host of analogue effects chains. Among the mix is a hypnotic and continual breakbeat
that dips in and out dynamically, plus a host of improvised effects that sporadically paint
over the mix like a beautiful and chaotic tapestry.

interest in the introspective side of trance and finding comfort in what I was creating. It
was sort of like going back to using processes from when I first started making dance

Pera Sta Ori - BOUNCING/LASSITUDE
Transparent EP Vinyl (limited edition to 150 copies) with insert printed artwork
Pera Sta Ori is the pseudonym of greek sound artist and producer,
George Kontogiannidis. Professing a futuristic style, his music blends
senses from DnB, IDM and bleep. Bursting into the general
consciousness back in 2017, time has only seen this promising artist
grow with releases on brokntoys, Furthur Electronix and Yellow
Machines. He now readies his next EP with us at MUSAR, titled
‘IMMI’.
Short for ‘Immigrant’, ‘IMMI’ EP is dedicated to uprooted people.
Within, Pera Sta Ori explores an imaginary world in which misery is
erased from memory. Projecting into vast expanses, each track
forms an echo chamber. From the urgent and frenetic vocals of ´SCATTER 0^’, layered with crunching percussion and swarming
bass, to the ambience of ‘Bouncing/Lassitude’ and downtempo
quirks of ‘CIN1’, Pera Sta Ori provides a variance of headscapes to
slip into.
Chilean celestial spark Kamila Govorèin creates her own world on
the remix of ‘CIN1’. Jagged percussion ripple and ricochet with nearindustrial
inflections. Peppered with openings of etherealism, the
samples of the original glide whilst Govorèin keeps things driving
with four-to-the- floor punches.

Annie Hall - Santolina
After more than a decade of deep, expansive productions on labels such as Detroit Underground and CPU, Annie Hall
arrives on MUSAR for a record typically rich in tex- ture andunderstated grooves.
Opening track ‘Linium’ immediately seduces listeners with a complex drum pattern that somehow feels spacious, subtly
twisting and turning it’s way around Hall’s analogue world.
Dutch artist Mattheis maintains this understated feel but adds a soft, compelling kick in response on his suspenseful remix of
‘Lavandula’. The original, moodier version of this cut the follows to open the B side, gradually erupting around a killer distorted bassline.
The EP continues to hit a more urgent note with the tense machinations of ‘Silene’, where dense layers of stuttering,
frenetic drums interweave with Hall’s trademark, melancholy keys. The record concludes on a weightless, transcendent note
with ‘San- tolina’, taking each visceral element featured thus far and slowing each down, with af- fecting results.
Indebted to vintage electro and IDM, Hall’s music is no throwback, always looking for- ward and moving dancefloors in the most unexpected ways.

MANASYt - Orthodox Spanking
MUSAR is honoured to welcome Bulgaria's electro-synth pioneer
MANASYt with a new five- track EP, the first in a three-part series.
'Reality Defense Department' will be the Bulgarian's first new material
since 2012.
Petar Tassev aka MANASYt, hails from the twilight zone. Growing up
with the blacks swans in the forest of communist Bulgaria, listening to
metal and hardcore music then interpreting the moody, roughness
together with inspirations from electronic new-wave music to a raw,
pure and dark adventure bubbling with madness.
'Reality Defense Department' is a future horror movie soundtrack.
The first track 'Memory Imprints' is a pure psychedelic-trip into the
mental clinic for clockwork orange droogs, while the second track
'Mobile Pharmacy' evokes an apocalyptic alien attack. 'Orthodox
Spanking' is a dark, wayward fetish party electro track full of postpunk
elements, fit- ting for an artist given to performing live in a
rubber 'gimp' mask.
A pair of remixes are supplied by Brooklyn's wonder girl 'Via App' with
a deep, dark and gothic techno rework for the late dazed hours of the
morning and Norwich's kept secret, Wax Stag (an occasional
collaborator with Bibio and Clark) that delivers a dreamy, cosmic twist
that will linger in your consciousness for a long, long time to come.

J.Wiltshire - Summon Them
Following 12"s from Ricardo Tobar and MANASYt, the third
release on Tel Aviv's MUSAR welcomes rising UK star and
Super Hexagon label boss, J.Wiltshire.
The Laghan Pux EP finds Wiltshire sharing his psychedelic
electronic side and brings his versatile skills together, serving
up four completely different soundtracks.
The gleaming sci-fi gem 'DESklep' opens the EP as a pure
melodic IDM track loaded with Cornwall style while the bassheavy
title track 'Laghan Pux' is pumping as a dark & sharp
peak-time trippy beast.
Next up, the mysterious Roy of The Ravers, gives you an interpretation of what proper acid sounds like, whereas
'Chained Releases' takes you on a deep and hypnotic
adventure into space, full of warm guitar melodies and trancey
synths.
'Summon Them' closes the EP, an ambient magic piece for a
hazy, orange morning where the birds just woke up and the
trees singing for the first time to break the day.

Ricardo Tobar - The Structures Of Summer Are Within Us
Genre: House / Techno
Following celebrated releases from Annie Hall, J.Wiltshire, MANASYt and Mental
Overdrive, Amsterdam based label MUSAR returns to Ricardo Tobar for ‘Nadivi’, two
earthy electronic trips, accompanied by a bewitching remix from Legowelt.
On this exciting release, Chilean-born Tobar continues his knack of blending the live
tones of krautrock and electronica with a house and techno pulse, in a style not
dissimilar to Luke Abbot or James Holden (Tobar has previously released on the
latter’s imprint, Border Community.)
Title track ‘Navidi’ finds him at his offbeat best, a genuinely progressive and
psychedelic rolling house number that blossoms into something surprisingly epic
while utilising only weirdo textures, askew basslines and otherworldly samples.
Legowelt, meanwhile, flips the energy of the original into an acid bath, blending his
typical grit with a halcyon and dare we say, surprisingly funky bassline!
Retaining the weirdo spirit of its source material. Finally, on the memorably titled ‘The
Structures Of Summer Are Within Us’, Tobar rolls out a wistful, cathartic live jam that
blossoms into something curious and perhaps unexpected, reminiscent of Silver
Apples or Animal Collective.
Staking further claim as one of the most naturally innovative and feeling producers in
the electronic music landscape, ‘Navidi’ is that rare sort of dance release;
propulsive, intriguing and refreshingly lovely.

Nightwave - The Journey (Violet Remix)
Genre: House / Techno
12" EP Vinyl (Limited edition to 150 copies) in a PVC sleeve with paper inner + MP3 Code.
MUSAR continues to explore the healthy landscape of underground and alternative
electronic music with the debut release on the label from Nightwave. ‘The Journey’
is a fitting title for the Glaswegian producer, DJ and promoter, who has been a
lynchpin for the city’s vibrant music scene since her first release in 2010. In the time
since, Nightwave has a developed a punchy and highly original sound that blends
potent influences of acid, techno and forward-thinking bass music, with releases on
DABJ, UTTU, Fool’s Gold, DEXT and her own imprint Heka Trax.
For her MUSAR debut, Nightwave celebrates, in her own words, “joy, dance,
exploring inner worlds, the celebration of nature and life and how it all
interconnects”. On a delicate tip, opening and title track ‘The Journey’ establishes
the EP’s “rainforest rave” aesthetic, spiralling upwards with weightless energy. It’s
underlying percussion steps forward on ‘Jiboia Groove’, which blossoms thrillingly
into wave upon wave of ethereal, breakbeat-led rave.

Toyko’s Hoshina Anniversary has risen to particular prominence in recent
years with his self-titled brand of ‘Wa- techno’. Stylistically fusing traditional
Japanese instrumentation with Chicago and Detroit sensibilities, his works
have found homes on ESP Institute, Young Marco’s Safe Trip and
Amsterdam-based MUSAR Recordings.

Ricardo Tobar - Parques
Genre: House / Techno
Releasing his first ever vinyl release ‘El Sunset’ on James Holden’s, Border Community back in
2007, Chilean producer Ricardo Tobar has since been held in high regard by the seminal UK
producer. Intricately constructing his way around the parameters of emotionally-lead, highly
atmospheric electronic music, Ricardo has brought his sound forward to grace the rosters of
Jennifer Cardini’s, Correspondant, ESP Institute and MUSAR Recordings. Continuing to
extend his already significant discography, he now returns to MUSAR Recordings for a third time
with the ‘After The Movie’ EP.
Ricardo’s ‘After The Movie’ EP forms a selection of cuts that have been held in his locker for quite
some time. Uncovered by MUSAR Recordings label head, Dweedo on a podcast from way back, it
seemed only natural that this unreleased music from Ricardo would find its home on the
Amsterdam-Tel-Aviv label.
“This EP is quite special to me because it reflects a long timeline in my work.
The ‘After The Movie’ track had been in the vault for ages until David from MUSAR found it
in an old podcast; it really takes me back to those first steps in recording music.”

Soundway Records delivers an exciting new compilation, diving ever deeper into South-East Asia. Ayo Ke Disco celebrates the musical identities emerging during the 1970s and 80s from the newly independent countries nestled around the South China Sea.
This time, Soundway’s long-time general manager Alice Whittington (aka DJ Norsicaa) steps into the limelight, embracing her Malaysian heritage and selecting music from her heavy collection of Asian records. Aside from steering the label, she is often found on international stages and radio stations playing an eclectic array of music.
For Ayo Ke Disco (meaning ‘Let’s go to the disco’ in Indonesian), 10 rare tracks of disco-funk, psychedelic funk, synth, city pop, and Hindustani-Arabic rhythms were painstakingly licensed from local labels – forming a snapshot of the vibrant discotheques and live scenes across Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong and the Philippines.
The vinyl release is also accompanied by the Ayo Ke Disco zine from Norsicaa, with extensive research on the history of music in South-East Asia, archival photos and exclusive interviews with some of the region’s most respected collectors. More

Release Notes:
For the first time since its inception 36 years ago, Steve Hiett’s elusive Down On The Road By The Beach is finally made available outside of Japan. Most recognized in the fashion sphere as an English photographer and graphic designer, Hiett‘s transportive audio portraits amplify his serpentine guitar to the infinite blue, recorded across Paris, Tokyo and New York with no coastline in sight. Now widely celebrated as a desert island disc, very little is actually known of its unfathomable genesis.
A career devotee of Brian Wilson’s ground breaking harmonies, Hiett shot The Beach Boys for Rolling Stone - as well as The Doors, Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix (in one of his final performances at the 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival) - while establishing himself as a fashion photographer. Decamping to Paris in 1972, he began what would become 20-year collaborations with Vogue Paris and Marie Claire, printing his signature warm, saturated and vibrantly hued snapshots.
In 1982, representatives from Tokyo’s Galerie Watari visited him to propose a solo exhibition. Asking if he could insert a 7” of original music into the back of the exhibition catalogue, Hiett laid down ‘Blue Beach - Welcome To Your Beach’ in a Parisian radio station, playing all of the instruments himself, and two more cuts in New York with Yoko Ono, The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan hired-gun Elliot Randall. Once dispatched, the phone began ringing off the hook with requests for him to fly to Tokyo. Assuming these long-distance callers were wanting him to check proofs for the book, it wasn’t until he arrived that he discovered CBS/Sony had facilitated an entire album. Heitt hastily gripped some petty cash, bought a guitar and retreated to his hotel room to start writing.
Entering the studio the following day, he was further surprised by a waiting room of session players known as Moonriders - one of Japan’s most acclaimed rock bands of the 1980s. Intimidated by their indecipherable sheet music, Hiett suggested Randall join them and with money being no object for major labels at the time, his wingman was on the next plane out of New York to finalise the high production indulgence. Near-ambient arrangements that float in a space between The Durutti Column, Steve Cropper and Ashra, Down On The Road By The Beach also crowns Hiett the master of recontextualization with his zero-gravity blues visions of Roll Over Beethoven, Santo & Johnny’s Sleep Walk and the 1967 Eddie Floyd soul hit Never Found A Girl.
Produced in coordination between Be With, Efficient Space and the artist, this definitive reissue is restored from original masters with vivid reproductions of the Down On The Road By The Beach exhibition catalogue, intended to accompany its original release, and extensive liner notes penned by fellow Steve Hiett obsessive Mikey IQ Jones.

We'll jump at the chance to talk about anyone affiliated with the mysterious SAULT collective. One of their most prominent voices, Cleo Sol, has here teamed up with her longtime producer friend Inflo for her second album, 'Mother'. This 12-track LP spans neo-soul, jazz and folk, and chronicles Sol's turbulent transition into motherhood. Across solitary ballads like 'Sunshine' and radiant folk dirges like 'Know That You Are Loved' and 'Promises', this album sounds purer in contrast to her debut 'Rose In The Dark'

Alongside the widespread success of Sault, we've been able to bear witness to the continued rise of core member Cleo Sol as a standout voice in the vanguard of UK soul. Following her two previous albums Mother and Rose In The Dark, Sol stretches out once again with an arresting collection of neo soul, folk and more. Everything is cast in warm, rich tones, from the acoustic lilt of 'Airplane' to the dusky bump of 'Go Baby', but it's the strength of Sol's vocal presence which binds everything together so perfectly. Truly capturing the best of modern soul with wholly justified comparisons to Jill Scott, Erykah Badu and D'Angelo alike, this stunning album has future classic written all over it.

When she started her career just over a decade ago, Cleopatra Nikolic AKA Cleo Sol was considered a singer-for-hire within the international deep house community. Now, with the assistance of beat-maker Inflo, she's decided to strike out on her own via a quietly impressive solo debut that re-casts her as a genuinely fresh and exciting soul talent. Beginning with the layered acapella vocals and deep, jazzy grooves of stunning opener "One Love", the album sees her brilliantly deliver heartfelt and thoughtful lyrics over hazy backing tracks that brilliantly join the dots between jazz, neo-soul and R&B. While she's undoubtedly the star of the show, Inflo's stripped-back, partially acoustic and largely soft-focus production is also worthy of high praise.

Cleo Sol's arrival in the past few years has been one of the best things to happen to UK soul music in a long time, and she's gifted us two of her outstanding albums in the past 12 months. While ears are reeling from the wonder of Heaven, we're now treated to Gold and it's hard to fathom how so many incredible songs can spill out from one person. There's a dusky, understated quality to this album which makes it so easy to sink into and even in the most stripped down arrangements you can sense the guiding hand of dub giving the music a womb-like intimacy. The playing has a raw, in-the-room immediacy and it flows so naturally it wouldn't be a surprise to learn it was recorded in one take.

My studio is my shelter, I feel comfortable there, surrounded by wonderful inspiring machines. A small cosy room where ideas emerge, mature, morph, and solidify into their final shape. 'Studio' is the result of spending time in that space. The album's intention is simple: Presenting a beautiful personal musical journey. The creative process in itself matters to me, the interaction with my instruments, the accidental discoveries, the successful execution of a vision and anything in between.
Most of the tracks on this album got revised countless times, and then even more, once I knew in which context and order I wanted to arrange them. I have been living with my music for months now, listening, thinking, changing, diving deeper and deeper into each piece.
I love albums, they are a beautiful long-form format where each part has its place, a journey from the start till the end. Each piece has its own story, its own flavour and history.
Some of them have been with me since a while already. There is material which I created years ago for installations and music derived from previous audiovisual works, all completely ripped apart and rearranged multiple times. During their creation my pieces often turn into something completely different, they repeatedly shift from one state to another until they become solid. What I consider a core element at the beginning might be later discarded completely, and a little detail in the background might become the essence.
Many explorations ended in the trash bin before the results had a chance to be part of 'Studio'. Things did not fall into place, did not feel right.
Other compositions had to fill the void instead, some created quickly in a rush of inspiration, some slowly, shy, questioning their significance. This album did not come into existence in a hurry, it took as long as it needed. I used the time to walk around my creations, to listen to them from the distance, physically, mentally, with friends, in all kinds of different contexts. I tried to understand what I just did. I started to see patterns, hidden motifs, things that were buried in between too many layers of sound. What is essential? What is ornament? I reduced, rearranged, added again.
The closer I got to the final state of 'Studio' the more clarity I found. The inherent doubts and the nagging voices from the inside got more quiet, and a sense of achievement started to manifest itself. More and more details just fell into place. And now it is done. After making electronic music since almost thirty years I don't care anymore about genres, about how to label things. It is music, my own personal music, and that's it. Call it electronica if you wish.
Process Notes
The music on this album has been constructed in Ableton Live. Most of the sounds have been created with my collection of beloved hardware synthesisers and effects, often further processed until something completely different did emerge. Sometimes I spend days in the studio just recording sounds or creating new presets, without already having a composition in mind. A few selected musical instruments contributed significantly to the palette of this album; a New England Digital Synclavier II, which also served as inspiration for the artwork, a Sequential Prophet VS, which is present on all Monolake albums since 1996, a Yamaha SY77, Linn Drum, and the Oberheim Xpander. And then there is Operator in Ableton Live, which I developed in 2004 and still love to use, and a lot of the other effects and instruments in the software. And of course my Granulator III instrument, and the PitchLoop89 audio effect. The final sonic world is often the result of radical processing of these elements, via filtering, pitch shifting, time stretching and other types of processing, both in Live and with my hardware. The good old Alesis Quadraverb deserves an honorary mention here, so does the AMS RMX 16.
Artwork
The cover combines a few complex elements. A composition of various lichen photographs, and a computational noise field that cuts rivers into the structure, where the inner artwork of the album shines through: The inside of the CD package and the gatefold vinyl cover shows a non-existing musical instrument, based on the user interface of the Synclavier II. I've always been fond of its futuristic button matrix with red LEDs, which conjures a sense of nostalgia for early computer systems. But I wanted more than just a photograph of it. Instead, I created a collage that not only consists of its existing controls but also integrated additional features it never possessed, though it might have in a subsequent iteration. In essence, I crafted a vision of a future that never materialized.
Geeky detail: When a Synclavier II is turned on, and the connected mainframe computer did not boot yet, the LEDs in the buttons light up in random patterns. The imaginary version of it does the same.

The ever-evolving beat maker and jazz aficionado Shatter Hands audibly took space to grow for his 5th album, amounting to his most versatile body of work yet. His all new approach of recording and sampling musicians around him results in a wild yet super coherent ride through ambient jazz, afro-influenced drum work and stinky basslines that will make you want to get sum. "A Show Of Hands Vol. 1" is packed with knowledge from years of digging and beat making, yet super open and fresh towards the future side of sound.

Past Moves III is the final instalment of the vinyl-only series served up by Berlin's ever-well-curated and cultured Sushitech label. It is another essential 12' that packs in plenty of heat from the long-time UK favourite. His records are hard to find and expensive when you do and this collection highlights some of his superbly blended acid, dub, tech and house grooves from back between 1997 and 2004. On this one, you will find a pair of weighty, warm, and dubbed out tech cuts with bounce in the drums and Detroit soul in the pads. Timeless stuff.

Dexter - I Move You (1997 Remastered)
The second part of Sushitech's three-part vinyl-only series looking at the work of Dexter is another 12" doozy. The UK underground mainstay has been behind many cult and much sought-after records over the years and they all fuse obscure dub and acid tech house in smart ways. They were recorded between 1997-2004 and if you can find any OGs then you will be paying upwards of 100 quid for them. This slab has three driving but deep sounds carefully detailed with wispy pads and filtered vocals for perfect backroom deployment.
