The irrepressible Plant43 spent a bunch of time over the winter of 2022 and 2023 writing some red hot new music. This is the first drop of what we're told is going to be a limited edition series showcasing what he made and it comes on lovely orange vinyl. 'Fierce Machines' races out of the blocks with edgy hits and celestial chords over a dynamic electro rhyth. 'Silent Core' then dials things back to a more empty and atmospheric sound with zippy leads and rueful chord work. 'Dark Veneer' is a busy mix of tightly sequenced melodic patterns over a jittery groove and 'Life In The Pod' is a clean, crisp, shiny metallic trip.

Plant43 is the alias of Emile Facey, one of electro's most tireless innovators. He has a vast discography that never fails to prove he can speak through his machines more ably than just about anyone in the game, and certainly within the genre. Luminous Machines comes on his own label and is an album, his eighth in all, of cinematic and futuristic jams written before a gig at Tresor in April this year. 'Haunting The Depths' has an icy minimalism to it, with crisp drums and snappy hits all underpinned by textured bass. The title cut is a restless affair that pings about the stereo field with squiggling lines and loopy breaks and 'Fixed Point Rotation' has a more dark and menacing feel. These are just some of the highlights of another standout collection. More

Plant43 wrote a trio of EPs over the winter season at the end of 2022 and the start of 23 and has been putting them out on his own Plant43 Recordings label. This third part from the man born Emile Facey is another emotional rollercoaster that conveys the wintry scenes in which they were written while also taking you on to the more warm and optimistic light of spring. Lithe electro rhythms and icy synths open up on 'Tidal Flexing' while 'Reflective Waves' gets a little darker and more intense. 'System's Edge' is a celestial cruise with quick, slick drums and masterful leads then 'Mind Drift' channels Drexcyian cyborg funk to close. The final part of the story comes on coloured vinyl but only in limited quantities.

Four more lively, lovely electro offerings from Plant 43, the second in a limited edition series of EPs focussed on tracks written over the course of the winter of 2022/23. Opener 'Submolecular Shifting' is bright and bubbly, joining the dots between Kraftwerk and Model 500, while 'Eccentric Elliptical Orbit' follows on slower and more grandiose, echoing early New Order's icy cool synth sounds. 'Encased' has a more otherworldly Aphex-like feel, although the juddering, on-off bass keeps it plugged into the dancefloor. 'The Forgotten Storm' closes proceedings, more low key again and graced with ethereal, adding angelic choirs. Energised enough and streamlined enough to be good dancefloor gear, but expertly executed and, as ever, brimming with enough personality to be a decent home listen as well.

Over 52 minutes and nine tracks the album whisks the listener effortlessly from fast-paced dancefloor electro through the slowmotion cloud-soaring of Concrete Breakers, the intricate experimental synths of Perfect Ruin to the lilting, songlike tones of the emotional album closer 'Tides Align'.

Plant43 is releasing his next album, Scars Of Intransigence, on Shipwrec in autumn 2014. An associate of labels like CPU, Semantica, the late Ai Records and Frustrated Funk, Plant43 has been producing since 2006 and has released more than 70 tracks, equally inspired by the 80's electro of his youth and the Drexcyian sounds of the 90's. He has a strong artistic vision and that plays out in this carefully crafted album, which has been written as a coherent story that unfolds from start-to-finish. Rather than being purely a collection of DJ tools, Scars Of Intransigence has also been made with the home listening experience in mind so that the album works in both contexts equally well. Kicking off with 'Dormant Technology', a liquid electro funk is set in motion immediately. From there the tempo drops into the doleful and sombre 'Unnamed Resistance' before 'Cavernous Bones' explores deeply emotive electro, 'Fire Burning Inside' demonstrates Emile's ability to programme a hugely resonant synth line and 'The Coldest Rule' then comes on like a dystopian vision of an unsettled underwater world. Now that the UK has left the EU and musicians try to navigate the impact on electronic music, a culture that thrives on being completely 'interlinked' he felt it was time to release this track that expresses that sadness but also conveys some hope for a future in which music can connect us all again. The B side starts with the driving urgency of 'Ancient Voice', future electro designed to move dance floors when they return. On June 16th, 2023, Steven Julien and Kyle Hall return with their first EP together in ten years, CROWN. The record follows earlier EPs the duo created under their former alias Funkinevil, 2013's Ignorant and 2012's Night/Dusk. The record once again brings together two artists from opposite sides of the pond—Julien hailing from London and Hall representing Detroit—with a shared love for soul in its purest essence.
Opening "Page 1", a pitched-down vocal by James Massiah pronounces, "My plan—won't let you take it from hand." That alone could be considered the nut graph of a record about taking ownership, created by two vanguards in the electronic music scene that, a decade ago, insisted on infusing their music with soul in a commercial club circuit lacking in it.
Assembled from a few years-worth of studio jams in Julien's studio, Crown dials up the staticky warmth present on earlier Funkinevil tracks like "Dusk" and "In The Grid." Across seven songs, Funkinevil shaves off some of their tougher elements, instead shooting for pastoral melodies and funky basslines, like on "Page 2", where Vicky Flint's flute flutters sleepily over breaks and a groovy Korg synthesizer. But the atmosphere on the EP is also grander than ever—on "Page 5," Cloud's wistful melisma soars over Flint's bleating saxophone and wandering sci-fi synths.
With all this attention to funky musicality, it's only fitting that two legends specializing in the craft would land on the B-side—Däm Funk revs up "Page 3" with a slamming kick and his unmistakable coolness, and Reggie B turns "Page 5" into a sludgy, jazzy dance party.

massive ode to passive-aggressive income remixed by Héctor Oaks, Der Zyklus, and
Decius.
“No one wants to work their body anymore,” says the Montreal merrymaker from atop
a throne in the exact shape of a digital wallet. “I get it. Who wants their surplus sweat
equity vacuumed up off the dance floor by corporate parasites when the real future’s
in decentralized skanking? But that’s why people in my position - the top one-percent
in terms of nightlife and hospitality take-home pay - have to offer real benefits to risking it all in the clubs. I’m talking dance-move insurance, competitive drink ticket
packages, and - most of all - the kind of brick-and-mortar bangers Rhythm Nation
was founded upon back in 1814.”
While gratingly content with the original version, Tiga has nonetheless chosen to
flood the Marketplace of Ideas with a plurality (3) of voices he feels will optimally position this release in today’s unforgiving Neo-Centrist landscape. This stunning grassfed vinyl 12” opens with a remix by Berlin-based vinyl-only DJ Héctor Oaks, who has
been described as “operating at the absolute vanguard of rave.” Please remember
that describing people this way is basically injecting them with Imposter Syndrome.
The release also features a remix by Der Zyklus, an alias of Gerald Donald, the
epochal genius from Drexciya, Dopplereffekt, Japanese Telecom, Abstract Thought,
Zerkalo, Zwischenwelt, and many other fantastic projects. Finally, Decius closes out
the EP with all the British Mischief you might expect from UK luminaries from Trashmouth Records, Fat White Family, and Paranoid London.
"I’ve designed my entire life around the concept of ease,” adds Tiga. "I never wanted
to work for a law firm. I wanted to make beats for a law firm. I’ve always been selfemployed, and that why my street cred’s off the street charts. And I’ve let as much of
that freedom trickle down to the audience as I can. Because when it comes to music,
there’s no such thing as an acceptable minimum wage. You gotta know that you gotta
give it all you got or you’re gonna get got.”
